The bivalve mollusc Arctica islandica can live for hundreds of years, and its shell has provided a valuable resource for sclerochronological studies and geochemical analyses for understanding palaeoenvironmental change. Shell specimens recovered from the seabed need to be dated in order to aid sample selection, but existing methods using radiocarbon dating or cross-dating are both costly and time-consuming. We have investigated amino acid geochronology (AAG) as a potential alternative means of providing a less costly and more efficient range-finding method. In order to do this, we have investigated the complex microstructure of the shells, as this may influence the application of AAG. Each of the three microstructural layers of A. islandica have been isolated and their protein degradation examined (amino acid concentration, composition, racemization, and peptide bond hydrolysis). The intra-crystalline protein fraction was successfully extracted following oxidation treatment for 48 h, and high-temperature experiments at 140 °C established coherent breakdown patterns in all three layers, but the inner portion of the outer shell layer (iOSL) was the most appropriate component due to practicalities. Sampling of the iOSL layer in Holocene shells from early and late ontogeny (over 100–400 years) showed that the resolution of AAG is too low in A. islandica for within-shell age resolution. However, analysis of 52 subfossil samples confirmed that this approach could be used to establish a relative geochronology for this biomineral throughout the whole of the Quaternary. In the late Holocene the temporal resolution is ∼1500 –2000 years. Relative dating of 160 dredged shells of unknown age was narrowed down using AAG as a range finder, showing that a collection of shells from Iceland and the North Sea covered the middle Holocene, late Holocene, later and post-medieval (1171–1713 CE), and modern day. Understanding the recruitment variability of the Atlantic herring North Sea stock remains a key objective of stock assessment and management. Although many efforts have been undertaken linking climatic and stock dynamic factors to herring recruitment, no major attempt has been made to estimate recruitment levels before the 20th century. Here, we present a novel annually resolved, absolutely dated herring recruitment reconstruction, derived from stable carbon isotope geochemistry (δ13C), from ocean quahog shells from the Fladen Ground (northern North Sea). Our age model is based on a growth increment chronology obtained from fourteen shells. Ten of these were micromilled at annual resolution for δ13C analysis. Our results indicate that the anthropogenically driven relative depletion of 13C, the oceanic Suess effect (oSE), became evident in the northern North Sea in the 1850s. We calculated a regression line between the oSE‐detrended δ13C results (δ13CṠ) and diatom abundance in the North Sea, the regression being mediated by the effect of phytoplankton on the δ13C of the ambient dissolved inorganic carbon. We used this regression to build an equation mediated by a nutritional link to reconstruct herring recruitment using δ13CṠ. The reconstruction suggests that there were five extended episodes of low‐recruitment levels before the 20th century. These results are supported by measured recruitment estimates and historical fish catch and export documentation. This work demonstrates that molluscan sclerochronological records can contribute to the investigation of ecological baselines and ecosystem functioning impacted by anthropogenic activity with implications for conservation and stock management. The scarcity of long instrumental series from the Southern Ocean limits our understanding of key climate and environmental feedbacks within the Antarctic system. We present an assessment for the Antarctic mollusc bivalve Yoldia eightsi as an Antarctic coastal climatological archive, based on annually-resolved growth pattern of 20 live-collected specimens in 1988 from Factory Cove, Signy Island (South Orkney Islands). Two detrending methods were applied to the growth increment series: negative exponential detrending and regional curve standardization (RCS) detrending. The RCSchronology showed consistent synchronous growth in the population for a 20 year period (1968-1988; expressed population signal ≥ 0.85), a negative correlation between the RCS-chronology and the fast-ice duration record (r= -0.41, N= 24, P≤ 0.05) and winter duration (r= -0.52, N=24, P≤ 0.01) and positive correlations with mean winter sea surface temperature (SST; r= 0.57, N= 24, P≤ 0.01), mean summer SST (r= 0.46, N= 24, P≤ 0.05) and mean annual SST (r= 0.48, N= 24, P≤ 0.05). The chronology appears to record the environmental conditions generated during the Weddell Polynya event (1973 -1976) as detectable abrupt changes in the annual growth patterns. Over eight years (1973-1980) a negative relationship between shell growth and suspended chlorophyll (i.e. a proxy for surface productivity) is apparent which is likely influenced by the seasonal deposition of organic phytodetritus on the seabed following surface water phytoplankton blooms. Our results form a basis for establishing Y. eightsi as an environmental archive for coastal Antarctic waters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
