Understanding how sea turtle species move through the environment and respond to environmental features is fundamental for sustainable ecosystem management and effective conservation. This study investigates the habitat suitability of the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) in the Adriatic and Northern Ionian Seas (Central-Eastern Mediterranean) by developing and validating a multidisciplinary framework that leverages machine learning to investigate movement patterns collected by satellite tags Argos satellite tags. Satellite tracking data, enriched with sixteen environmental variables from the Copernicus Marine Service and EMODnet-bathymetry, were analyzed using Random Forest models, obtaining an accuracy of 80.9% when classifying presence versus pseudo-absence of loggerhead sea turtles. As main findings, sea bottom depth, surface chlorophyll (chl-a), and mixed layer depth (MLD) were identified as the most influential features in the habitat suitability of these specimens. Moreover, statistically significant differences, evaluated using t-test statistics, were found between coastal and pelagic locations, for the different seasons, in mixed layer depth, chl-a, 3D-clorophyll, salinity and phosphate. Although based on a limited sample of tagged animals, this study demonstrates that the distribution patterns of loggerhead sea turtles in Mediterranean coastal and pelagic areas are primarily influenced by sea water features linked to productivity and, consequently, to potential prey abundance. Hyponatremia is a common complication in patients undergoing neurosurgery. If undiagnosed, it has a negative prognostic impact. The two dominant causes of refractory hyponatremia include syndrome of inappropriate ADH secretion (SIADH) and cerebral salt wasting syndrome (CSWS). Discrimination between the two types of disease is not always obvious. We present a case of undiagnosed chronic hyponatremia caused by CSWS after neurosurgery, which not only resulted in a longer hospital stay but also slowed the patient’s postoperative recovery. Meticulous clinical evaluation and the performance of appropriate laboratory tests are therefore essential not only for decisive treatment, but also for the establishment of comprehensive diagnostic algorithms that allow timely diagnosis and decisive therapy. more...

The Mediterranean Forecasting System produces operational analyses and reanalyses and 10 d forecasts for many essential ocean variables (EOVs), from currents, temperature, salinity, and sea level to wind waves and pelagic biogeochemistry. The products are available at a horizontal resolution of 1/24∘ (approximately 4 km) and with 141 unevenly spaced vertical levels. The core of the Mediterranean Forecasting System is constituted by the physical (PHY), the biogeochemical (BIO), and the wave (WAV) components, consisting of both numerical models and data assimilation modules. The three components together constitute the so-called Mediterranean Monitoring and Forecasting Center (Med-MFC) of the Copernicus Marine Service. Daily 10 d forecasts and analyses are produced by the PHY, BIO, and WAV operational systems, while reanalyses are produced every ∼ 3 years for the past 30 years and are extended (yearly). The modelling systems, their coupling strategy, and their evolutions are illustrated in detail. For the first time, the quality of the products is documented in terms of skill metrics evaluated over a common 3-year period (2018–2020), giving the first complete assessment of uncertainties for all the Mediterranean environmental variable analyses. more...

In the Mediterranean basin, coniferous reforestation mainly comprises forest stands highly susceptible to fires. When silvicultural treatments have not been performed for decades after plantation, these stands often exhibit high vertical and horizontal tree density, along with a significant occurrence of lying and standing deadwood, thereby increasing the fuel load. On average, these pine forests are characterized by high values of above-ground biomass, ranging from 175 to 254 Mg ha−1 for the younger and the older ones, respectively. The theoretical heat energy produced per surface unit, in the case of the total combustion of the above-ground biomass, is also high, varying from 300 to 450 MJ ha−1 depending on the stage of stand development. In this study, we demonstrated the importance of silvicultural interventions in reducing the pyrological potential in pine reforested stands located in southern Italy, also giving attention to the water savings needed during extinction phases. In detail, we applied a preliminary mathematical reaction-diffusion model aimed at predicting the development of forest fires. The model was applied using data obtained through the estimation of the pyrological potential in terms of heat energy produced per surface unit (1 hectare) and the variation in the critical surface intensity. We verified that, when silvicultural interventions are applied, they induce a reduction of heat energy ranging between 17 and 21%, while the extinguishing water saved ranges between 600 and 1000 Mg ha−1. Moreover, when the silvicultural interventions are implemented, the probability of the transition from surface fire to crown fire can be reduced by up to 31%. The most effective results on fire risk mitigation are mainly obtained when thinning aimed at reducing canopy and tree density is carried out in the younger phases of the reforested pine stands. more...

Se muestra una revisión de investigaciones sobre adicciones. Se consideró especialmente la producción de literatura latinoamericana, donde las adicciones son abordadas desde perspectivas teórico-metodológicas que incluyen análisis provenientes de: ciencias sociales de la religión; etnografías sobre drogas; antropología médica. Particularmente, se profundiza en los modelos de tratamiento de las adicciones que denomino neopentecostal y neochamánico. Estos modelos forman parte de un sistema de cuidados entendido en sentido amplio, donde las dimensiones religioso-espirituales se hacen expresamente presentes. Se muestran sus principales características según se desprende de la bibliografía revisada y se plantea una mirada al tema desde Uruguay. El estudio de las imbricaciones y convergencias de lo religioso y la salud en el caso de las adicciones es un campo fértil para el desarrollo de perspectivas teóricas y analíticas. Neurodevelopmental Disorders (NDDs) represent a significant healthcare and economic burden for families and society. Technology, including AI and digital technologies, offers potential solutions for the assessment, monitoring, and treatment of NDDs. However, further research is needed to determine the effectiveness, feasibility, and acceptability of these technologies in NDDs, and to address the challenges associated with their implementation. In this work, we present the application of social robotics using a Pepper robot connected to the OpenAI system (Chat-GPT) for real-time dialogue initiation with the robot. After describing the general architecture of the system, we present two possible simulated interaction scenarios of a subject with Autism Spectrum Disorder in two different situations. Limitations and future implementations are also provided to provide an overview of the potential developments of interconnected systems that could greatly contribute to technological advancements for Neurodevelopmental Disorders (NDD). more...

The second-largest oil pollution incident in the Eastern Mediterranean Levantine basin, following the oil pollution crisis in Lebanon in 2006, is considered to be the oil leakage from the Syrian Baniyas power plant (summer 2021), during which 12,000 tons of oil were released. At the operational phase, the everyday predictions of oil drift were provided using the MEDSLIK and MEDSLIK-II models in the framework of an agreement between the Mediterranean Operational Network for Global Ocean Observing System (MONGOOS) and the Regional Marine Pollution Emergency Response Centre for the Mediterranean (REMPEC). In this work, we present a novel post-operational comprehensive model-based analysis, conducting a SAR validation in two model outputs: the MEDSLIK and the OpenDrift models. Each simulation is initiated with the operationally acquired EMSA-CSN and ESA SAR images. Moreover, the high-resolution met-ocean fields (CYCOFOS, SKIRON) are used to force the oil drift and transformation in both models. The spill was developed under the calm-wind conditions that prevailed during the incident. We found that the boundary sea currents developed on the periphery of the Lattakia eddies (anticyclonic and cyclonic) were responsible for the fast westward spreading of the oil spill offshore in the NE Levantine, the north-south pathway bifurcation, and re-landing of oil in the extended coastal area of Lattakia. Model outputs were validated against Synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) images with appropriate performance metrics, used for the first time, to assess the capacity of a reliable representation of oil spill drift. The intercomparison between the two oil spill models indicated that both models produce almost similar results, while their validation against the satellite SAR observations illustrates moderate accuracy. more...

Abstract Understanding the relationship between brain architecture and brain function is a central issue in neuroscience. We modeled realistic spatio-temporal patterns of brain activity on a human connectome with a Boolean networks model with the aim of computationally replicating certain cognitive functions as they emerge from the standardization of many fMRI studies, identified as patterns of human brain activity. Results from the analysis of simulation data, carried out for different parameters and initial conditions identified many possible paths in the space of parameters of these network models, with normal (ordered asymptotically constant patterns), chaotic (oscillating or disordered) but also highly organized configurations, with countless spatial–temporal patterns. We interpreted these results as routes to chaos, permanence of the systems in regimes of complexity, and ordered stationary behavior, associating these dynamics to cognitive processes. The most important result of this work is the study of emergent neural circuits, i.e., configurations of areas that synchronize over time, both locally and globally, determining the emergence of computational analogues of cognitive processes, which may or may not be similar to the functioning of biological brain. Furthermore, results put in evidence the creation of how the brain creates structures of remote communication. These structures have hierarchical organization, where each level allows for the emergence of brain organizations which behave at the next superior level. Taken together these results allow the interplay of dynamical and topological roots of the multifaceted brain dynamics to be understood. more...

This article traces the trajectories of psilocybin and ayahuasca in the context of the psychedelic renaissance. The bibliometric analysis reveals that academic publications on psilocybin fall primarily into the medical and scientific areas, whereas those devoted to ayahuasca derive mainly from humanities and social sciences. Second, the article argues that psilocybin and ayahuasca use is undergoing a process of secularization, leading to psychedelic use that is increasingly removed from its traditional cultural roots. This secularization manifests itself differently in the two cases: Psilocybin exhibits a higher degree of secularization than ayahuasca. Ayahuasca maintains strong ties to religious institutions and indigenous organizations deeply involved in its global spread, and it has undergone less medicalization than psilocybin. While the careful attention to setting in psilocybin clinical trials is noteworthy, this doesn't necessarily imply an emphasis on traditional mushroom use settings. On the other hand, a form of 'ayahuasca guardianship' persists, manifested in individuals and groups actively maintaining and asserting their cultural authority over the plant's significance and associated practices. Composite structure is widely used in various technological fields because of its superior material properties. Composite structure detection technology has been exploring efficient and fast damage detection technology. In this paper, imagebased NDT technology is proposed to detect composite damage using deep learning. A data set was established through literature, which contained images of damaged and non-damaged composite material structures. Then, five convolutional neural network models Alexnet, VGG16, ResNet-34, ResNet-50, and GoogleNet were used to automatically classify the damage. Finally, the performance of five pre-trained network architectures is evaluated, and the results show that RESNET-50 technology can successfully detect damage in a reasonable computation time with the highest accuracy and low complexity using relatively small image datasets. Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms (DRESS) is characterised by skin rash together with visceral organ involvement, lymphadenopathy, eosinophilia and atypical lymphocytosis. INTRODUCTION: Platypnea-orthodeoxia syndrome (POS) is a rare syndrome characterized by dyspnea and arterial oxyhemoglobin desaturation induced by moving to the upright position and relieved by recumbency. Different pathogenic processes can lead to POS including cardiopulmonary and hepatopulmonary disorders. CASE PRESENTATION: We here present an unusual case of POS triggered by a previous severe SARSCoV-2 pneumonia in a 66-year-old man admitted to our Emergency Department with worsening dyspnea and chest pain. CONCLUSIONS: SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia should be considered an emerging cause of POS because of its pulmonary and cardiac/intravascular pathological implications. more...

An educational robotics lab has been planned for undergraduate students in an Electronic Engineering degree, using the Project Based Learning (PBL) approach and the NAO robot. Students worked in a research context, with the aim of making the functions of the NAO robot as social and autonomous as possible, adopting in the design process the Wolfram Language (WL), from the Mathematica software. Interfacing the programming environment of the NAO with Mathematica, they solved in part the problem of autonomy of the NAO, thus realizing enhanced functions of autonomous movement, recognition of human faces and speech for improving the system social interaction. An external repository was created to streamline processes and stow data that the robot can easily access. Self-assessment processes demonstrated that the course provided students with useful skills to cope with real life problems.
