ABSTRACT: Background: Successful treatments for intractable chronic low back pain (CLBP) in patients who are not eligible for surgical interventions are scarce. The superior efficacy of differential target multiplexed spinal cord stimulation (DTM SCS) to conventional SCS (Conv-SCS) on the treatment of CLBP in patients with persistent spinal pain syndrome (PSPS) who have failed surgical interventions (PSPS-T2) motivated the evaluation of DTM SCS versus Conv-SCS on PSPS patients who are non-surgical candidates (PSPS-T1). Methods: This is a prospective, open label, crossover, post-market randomized controlled trial in 20 centers across the United States. Eligible patients were randomized to either DTM SCS or Conv-SCS in a 1:1 ratio. Primary endpoint was CLBP responder rate (percentage of subjects with ≥50% CLBP relief) at 3-month in randomized subjects who completed trialing (modified intention-to-treat population). Patients were followed up to 12 months. Secondary endpoints included change of CLBP and leg pain, responder rates, changes in disability, quality of life, patient satisfaction and global impression of change, and safety profile. An optional crossover was available at 6-month to all patients. Results: About 121 PSPS-T1 subjects with CLBP and leg pain mostly associated with degenerative disc disease and radiculopathy and who were not eligible for spine surgery were randomized. CLBP responder rate with DTM SCS (93.5%) was superior to Conv-SCS (36.4%) at the primary endpoint. Superior CLBP responder rates (88.1%–90.5%) were obtained with DTM SCS at all other timepoints. Mean CLBP reduction with DTM SCS (6.52 cm) was superior to that with Conv-SCS (3.01 cm) at the primary endpoint. Similar CLBP reductions (6.23–6.43 cm) were obtained with DTM SCS at other timepoints. DTM SCS provided significantly better leg pain reduction and responder rate, improvement of disability and quality of life, and better patient satisfaction and global impression of change. 90.9% of Conv-SCS subjects who crossed over were CLBP responders at completion of the study. Similar safety profiles were observed between the two groups. Conclusion: DTM SCS for chronic CLBP in nonsurgical candidates is superior to Conv-SCS. Improvements were sustained and provided significant benefits on the management of these patients.

Abstract Background Identifying the molecular formula and fragmentation reactions of an unknown compound from its mass spectrum is crucial in areas such as natural product chemistry and metabolomics. We propose a method for identifying the correct candidate formula of an unidentified natural product from its mass spectrum. The method involves scoring the plausibility of parent candidate formulae based on a parent subformula graph (PSG), and two possible metrics relating to the number of edges in the PSG. This method is applicable to both electron-impact mass spectrometry (EI-MS) and tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) data. Additionally, this work introduces the two-dimensional fragmentation plot (2DFP) for visualizing PSGs. Results Our results suggest that incorporating information regarding the edges of the PSG results in enhanced performance in correctly identifying parent formulae, in comparison to the more well-accepted “MS/MS score”, on the 2016 Computational Assessment of Small Molecule Identification (CASMI 2016) data set (76.3 vs 58.9% correct formula identification) and the Research Centre for Toxic Compounds in the Environment (RECETOX) data set (66.2% vs 59.4% correct formula identification). In the extension of our method to identify the correct candidate formula from complex EI-MS data of semiochemicals, our method again performed better (correct formula appearing in the top 4 candidates in 20/23 vs 7/23 cases) than the MS/MS score, and enables the rapid identification of both the correct parent ion mass and the correct parent formula with minimal expert intervention. Conclusion Our method reliably identifies the correct parent formula even when the mass information is ambiguous. Furthermore, should parent formula identification be successful, the majority of associated fragment formulae can also be correctly identified. Our method can also identify the parent ion and its associated fragments in EI-MS spectra where the identity of the parent ion is unclear due to low quantities and overlapping compounds. Finally, our method does not inherently require empirical fitting of parameters or statistical learning, meaning it is easy to implement and extend upon. Scientific contribution Developed, implemented and tested new metrics for assessing plausibility of candidate molecular formulae obtained from HR-MS data.

LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterojunction field-effect transistors (HFETs) were fabricated. Using a combination of measured current–voltage (I–V) output curves and gate-source capacitance–voltage (C–V) characteristic curves for the fabricated LaAlO3/SrTiO3 HFETs, and considering scattering mechanisms for longitudinal optical phonon, interface rough, electron-electron (E-E), acoustic phonon, and polarized Coulomb field (PCF), the channel electron mobility of LaAlO3/SrTiO3 HFETs has been calculated and analyzed. The results showed that PCF scattering is a significant carrier scattering mechanism in LaAlO3/SrTiO3 HFETs. The heterostructure of the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 system has strong polarization characteristics. This paper is the first to demonstrate that PCF scattering is a significant carrier scattering mechanism in LaAlO3/SrTiO3 HFETs, following GaN HFETs, thus demonstrating that LaAlO3/SrTiO3 HFETs also have PCF scattering effect.

MoS2 with 2D structure shows efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance because undercoordinated Mo–S edges have ideal hydrogen adsorption free energy. MoS2 usually does not satisfy the bifunctional catalysts because of the poor intrinsic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalytic activity. Herein, it is proposed to construct heterostructure with OER active components to induce efficient bifunctional catalytic activity along with heteroatom doping to modify the electronic structure to optimize the adsorption and desorption capabilities of reaction intermediates. La‐doped Ni3S2/MoS2 grown on nickel foam (La‐NMS@NF) is synthesized as bifunctional catalyst taking advantage of the excellent OER performance of Ni3S2. La‐NMS@NF evolves into nanoflower‐like structures with the addition of La dopant, which provides abundant pore channels to facilitate mass transfer and exposure of active sites. Density functional calculations reveal that the La‐doped Ni3S2/MoS2 heterointerface can optimize the water adsorption and H* adsorption/desorption, improving the HER performance. The La‐NMS@NF exhibits an overpotential of 154 and 300 mV for HER and OER at 100 mA cm−2 in 1.0 m KOH. Herein, a heteroatom‐driven heterostructure activation strategy for electron rearrangement and structural evolution in electrocatalysts to decrease energy consumption in overall water splitting is demonstrated.

To date, it is controversial which metallic impurities play crucial role in the laser induced degradation and damage of fused silica at 355 nm. In this work, a First -principles study for the influences of impurities in fused silica are presented, which are usually contaminated during manufacture and post-processing processes. Our results show that Ca, K, Fe and Ce can lead to obvious optical absorption near 355 nm. Moreover, we find that, for K and Ca, the absorption intensity near 355 nm is highly sensitive to the concentration. Our results indicate that K and Ca can easily induce degradation and damage of fused silica at 355 nm. These two impurities should be concerned during manufacture and post-processing processes. The detailed theoretical study reveal that Ca and K can induce obvious impurity states in band gap and the optical absorption near 355 nm is originated from the transition between impurity states to conduction band. Our results also reveal that, for fused silica with Ca impurity, the exciton effect plays an important role for the optical absorptions near 355 nm, while it is not significant for K. Our work helps to explore laser damage mechanism and improve manufacture and post-processing techniques of fused silica.

Abstract With the development of flexible electronics, the demand for flexibility is gradually put forward for its energy supply device, i.e., battery, to fit complex curved surfaces with good fatigue resistance and safety. As an important component of flexible batteries, flexible electrodes play a key role in the energy density, power density, and mechanical flexibility of batteries. Their large‐scale commercial applications depend on the fulfillment of the commercial requirements and the fabrication methods of electrode materials. In this paper, the deformable electrode materials and structural design for flexible batteries are summarized, with the purpose of flexibility. The advantages and disadvantages of the application of various flexible materials (carbon nanotubes, graphene, MXene, carbon fiber/carbon fiber cloth, and conducting polymers) and flexible structures (buckling structure, helical structure, and kirigami structure) in flexible battery electrodes are discussed. In addition, the application scenarios of flexible batteries and the main challenges and future development of flexible electrode fabrication are also discussed, providing general guidance for the research of high‐performance flexible electrodes.

Abstract The current approach to achieving superior energy storage density in dielectrics is to increase their breakdown strength, which often incurs heat generation and unexpected insulation failures, greatly deteriorating the stability and lifetime of devices. Here, a strategy is proposed for enhancing recoverable energy storage density (Wr) while maintaining a high energy storage efficiency (η) in glassy ferroelectrics by creating super tetragonal (super‐T) nanostructures around morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) rather than exploiting the intensely strong electric fields. Accordingly, a giant Wr of ≈86 J cm−3 concomitant with a high η of ≈81% is acquired under a moderate electric field (1.7 MV cm−1) in thin films having MPB composition, namely, 0.94(Bi, Na)TiO3‐0.06BaTiO3 (BNBT), where the local super‐T polar clusters (tetragonality ≈1.25) are stabilized by interphase strain. To the knowledge of the authors, the Wr of the engineered BNBT thin films represents a new record among all the oxide perovskites under a similar strength of electric field to date. The phase field simulation results ascertain that the improved Wr is attributed to the local strain heterogeneity and the large spontaneous polarization primarily is originated from the super‐T polar clusters. The findings in this work present a genuine opportunity to develop ultrahigh‐energy‐density thin‐film capacitors for low‐electric‐field‐driven nano/microelectronics.

Abstract Band degeneracy is effective in optimizing the power factors of thermoelectric (TE) materials by enhancing the Seebeck coefficients. In this study, we demonstrate this effect in model systems of layered oxyselenide family by the density functional theory (DFT) combined with semi-classical Boltzmann transport theory. TE transport performance of layered LaCuOSe and BiCuOSe are fully compared. The results show that due to the larger electrical conductivities caused by longer electron relaxation times, the n-type systems show better TE performance than p-type systems for both LaCuOSe and BiCuOSe. Besides, the conduction band degeneracy of LaCuOSe leads to a larger Seebeck coefficient and a higher optimal carrier concentration than n-type BiCuOSe, and thus a higher power factor. The optimal figure of merit (ZT) value of 1.46 for n-type LaCuOSe is 22% larger than that of 1.2 for n-type BiCuOSe. This study highlights the potential of wide band gap material LaCuOSe for highly efficient TE applications, and demonstrates that inducing band degeneracy by cations substitution is an effective way to enhance the TE performance of layered oxyselenides.

For lithium–sulfur batteries, 3D cathodes might be of interest for containing the active material and trapping the polysulfides during cycling, owing to their binder-free and freestanding features. In this work, the MoS2 grown on the 3D structured Carbon Cloth (CC@MoS2) is firstly used to fabricate the Li–S battery and the sulfur loading can be freely tuned by adjusting thermal annealing time at 200 °C. A two-step melt-diffusion strategy is reported for fabrication of cathodes, which involves in melting and diffusion of sulfur covered by CC@MoS2 composites instead of dissolution of sulfur in the toxic organic solvents. Compared with the non-polar carbon cloth, the CC@MoS2 composites exhibit better adsorption capacity for polysulfides due to more edge active sites, which could effectively facilitate polysulfide redox kinetics. The SEM images of the CC@MoS2 cathode after 300 cycles show that MoS2 can still maintain the nanosheet morphology. After 300 cycles at 0.5 C, the CC@MoS2 cathodes loaded with 2 mg sulfur exhibit a better reversible capacity of 698 mA h g−1 compared with CC@MoS2 loaded with 1 mg sulfur (604 mA h g−1) and CC@MoS2 loaded with 4 mg sulfur (420 mA h g−1). This work proposes an environmentally friendly method to fabricate the lithium–sulfur battery cathode material and the sulfur loading can be freely adjusted.

Lightweight armor materials made from ceramics have become a great interest in the past decades. There have been many research efforts to develop the high-performance ceramics for this particular application. Boron carbide (B4C) is one of the promised candidates due to its extraordinary hardness, wear resistance, chemical inertness, ultra-lightweight, and its high resistance to radiation. However, the strong covalent bonding nature of B4C makes it hard to be sintered. Sintering at high temperatures and the presence of impurities can also result in grain coarsening. One of the methods being used to overcome the problems is to introduce Boron (B) as a sintering aid into raw materials of B4C. To evaluate the effects of B addition on the sinterability of B4C, B4C powders were ball-milled with B powders in different ratios and the mixtures of B4C and B were processed by spark plasma sintering technique. Density and toughness of the as-sintered materials were increased along with increasing B content in the range from 1 wt% to 7 wt% while hardness and strength of the samples were also increased when the percentage of B addition is up to 5 wt%.

Wild abalone (Family Haliotidae) populations have been severely affected by commercial fishing, poaching, anthropogenic pollution, environment and climate changes. These issues have stimulated an increase in aquaculture production; however production growth has been slow due to a lack of genetic knowledge and resources. We have sequenced a draft genome for the commercially important temperate Australian ‘greenlip’ abalone (Haliotis laevigata, Donovan 1808) and generated 11 tissue transcriptomes from a female adult abalone. Phylogenetic analysis of the greenlip abalone with reference to the Pacific abalone (Haliotis discus hannai) indicates that these abalone species diverged approximately 71 million years ago. This study presents an in-depth analysis into the features of reproductive dysfunction, where we provide the putative biochemical messenger components (neuropeptides) that may regulate reproduction including gonad maturation and spawning. Indeed, we isolate the egg-laying hormone neuropeptide and under trial conditions induce spawning at 80% efficiency. Altogether, we provide a solid platform for further studies aimed at stimulating advances in abalone aquaculture production. The H. laevigata genome and resources are made available to the public on the abalone ‘omics website, http://abalonedb.org.

Nickel-based selenides are believed to be promising non-precious metal electrocatalysts, and have been widely used for both oxygen evolution reactions (OER) and hydrogen evolution reactions (HER). Here, we control the aging time to prepare NixSey with different fractal structures as a bifunctional catalyst. An obtained sample with an aging time of 80 min shows outstanding electrocatalytic performance for hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) with an overpotential of 225 mV (η@10 mA/cm2) and for oxygen evolution reactions (OER) with an overpotential of 309 mV (η@50 mA/cm2). Moreover, to further improve catalytic activity, we doped Fe in NixSey to obtain the ternary nickel-based selenide, Fe0.2Ni0.8Se (FNSs). The HER activity of FNS increased two-fold at 10 mA/cm2, and the overpotential of OER decreased to 255 mV at 50 mA/cm2. The synthetic strategy and research results of this work have a certain reference value for other low-cost and high-efficiency transition metal catalysts for electrocatalytic water splitting.

Abstract Background The proportion of granule types in wheat starch is an important characteristic that can affect its functionality. It is widely accepted that granule types are either large, disc-shaped A-type granules or small, spherical B-type granules. Additionally, there are some reports of the tiny C-type granules. The differences between these granule types are due to its carbohydrate composition and crystallinity which is highly, but not perfectly, correlated with the granule size. A majority of the studies that have considered granule types analyse them based on a size threshold rather than chemical composition. This is understandable due to the expense of separating starch into different types. While the use of a size threshold to classify granule type is a low-cost measure, this results in misclassification. We present an alternative, statistical method to quantify the proportion of granule types by a fit of the mixture distribution, along with an R package, a web based app and a video tutorial for how to use the web app to enable its straightforward application. Results Our results show that the reliability of the genotypic effects increase approximately 60% using the proportions of the A-type and B-type granule estimated by the mixture distribution over the standard size-threshold measure. Although there was a marginal drop in reliability for C-type granules. The latter is likely due to the low observed genetic variance for C-type granules. Conclusions The determination of the proportion of granule types from size-distribution is better achieved by using the mixing probabilities from the fit of the mixture distribution rather than using a size-threshold.

High entropy alloys (HEAs) are composed of multiple main metal elements and have attracted wide attention in various fields. In this study, a novel Ti0.20Zr0.20Hf0.20Nb0.40 HEA was synthesized and its hydrogenation properties were studied, including sorption thermodynamics and hydrogen absorption/desorption kinetics. The maximum hydrogen absorption capacity was 1.5 H/atom at 573 K. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis indicated that the crystal structure of Ti0.20Zr0.20Hf0.20Nb0.40 HEA transformed from body-centered cubic (BCC) to body-centered tetragonal (BCT) with increasing hydrogen content, and to face-centered cubic (FCC) after hydrogen absorption to saturation. As a multi-principal element alloy, the Ti0.20Zr0.20Hf0.20Nb0.40 HEA possesses unique hydrogen absorption characteristics. The hydrogen absorption platform pressure rises gradually with the increase of the hydrogen absorption amount, which is caused by multiple kinds of BCT intermediate hydrides with consecutively increasing c/a. The full hydrogen absorption of the Ti0.20Zr0.20Hf0.20Nb0.40 HEA was completed in almost 50 s, which is faster than that of the reported hydrogen storage alloys in the literature. The experimental results demonstrate that the Ti0.20Zr0.20Hf0.20Nb0.40 HEA has excellent kinetic properties, unique thermodynamic hydrogen absorption performance, as well as a low plateau pressure at room temperature.

A highly conductive three-dimensional (3D) graphene network (GN) was fabricated by chemical vapor deposition on a 3D nickel fiber network and subsequent etching process. Then a lightweight and flexible polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)/GN composite was prepared by a vacuum infiltration method by using the graphene network as a template. The composite showed the superior electrical conductivity of 6100 S/m even at a very low loading level of graphene (1.2 wt %). As a result, an outstanding electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness (SE) of around 40 and 90 dB can be achieved in the X-band at thicknesses of 0.25 and 0.75 mm, respectively, which are much higher than most of the conductive polymers filled with carbon. The 3D graphene network can also act as a mechanical enhancer for PDMS. With a loading level of 1.2 wt %, the composite shows a significant increase by 256% in tensile strength.

The semiconductor industry has long been seeking a new kind of non-volatile memory technology with high-density, high-speed, and low-power consumption. This study demonstrated the electrochemical synthesis of ZnO films without adding any soft or hard templates. The effect of deposition temperatures on crystal structure, surface morphology and resistive switching characteristics were investigated. Our findings reveal that the crystallinity, surface morphology and resistive switching characteristics of ZnO thin films can be well tuned by controlling deposition temperature. A conducting filament based model is proposed to explain the switching mechanism in ZnO thin films.

Quantitative affine approximation for UMD targets, Discrete Analysis 2016:6, 48 pp. Let $Y$ be a Banach space. A _martingale difference sequence_ in $Y$ is a sequence of $Y$-valued random variables such that $\mathbb{E}[d_i|d_1,\dots,d_{i-1}]=0$ for every $i$ (and $\mathbb{E}(d_1)=0$). Given $10$, the aim is to find a sub-ball $B'\subset B$ of radius $\rho$, with $\rho$ as large as possible, and an affine function $\Lambda:B'\to Y$, such that $\|f(x)-\Lambda(x)\|\leq\epsilon\rho$ for every $x\in B'$. Importantly, the lower bound on $\rho$ must be independent of the function $f$. The paper obtains a lower bound of $\exp(-(1/\epsilon)^{cn})$ for a constant $c$ that depends on $Y$ only. This improves on the previously best known bound even when $Y$ is a Hilbert space. In the other direction, the best known upper bound (on how large $\rho$ is in the worst case) is singly exponential in $n$, so there is still a large and very interesting gap. There are several other attractive open problems in the paper. The proof of the main result of the paper is not easy, but it contains many new ideas in the geometry of Banach spaces and in harmonic analysis, some of which are interesting results in their own right.

Chemical and magnetic structures of substituent Co ions in ZnO:Co dilute magnetic oxides are investigated by using first-principles density functional calculations of isolated Co, clustered Co-O-Con (n>0) and chained -Co-O-Co-O-. It demonstrates that the substitutional Co ions in ZnO tend to form -Co-O-Co-O- chains or Co-O-Con clusters rather than stay isolated. The most stable structure was identified to be antiferromagnetic -Co-O-Co-O- chains via O on ab plane rather than Co-O-Con clusters. Furthermore, substituent Cu codoping in ZnO is disclosed to suppress the Co's tendency towards chain-like structures or clusters, thus enhancing its homogeneous distribution.
