Many people turn to social media for public health information, but such platforms often contain conflicting and inaccurate medical advice. To assess complex health claims online, people may consider the prevailing consensus; however, previous work suggests that people may not be very sensitive to important cues to consensus “quality”. To explore further, across two experiments we tested people’s sensitivity to the consensus-quality cues of source diversity and source expertise. Via a mock Twitter platform, participants rated their belief in a series of health claims both before and after reading various kinds of tweets about the claims. Experiment 1 showed that experts (both individual medical experts and health organisations) were more persuasive than non-experts. Additionally, stances that were supported by a diverse set of sources were more persuasive. Experiment 2 showed that participants continue to favour experts even when outnumbered in tweet quantity by non-experts. When experts were not present, however, participants favoured high tweet quantity. Both experiments suggest that cues to consensus quality (namely, expertise and source diversity) and consensus quantity (tweet quantity) are salient cues in belief revision. These findings are important in understanding how socially acquired health information (and misinformation) shifts opinion, and the role that experts can play.

11. The Effect of Expertise, Target Usefulness and Image Structure on Visual Search

- Abstract
Experts outperform novices on many cognitive and perceptual tasks. Extensive training has tuned experts to the most relevant information in their specific domain, allowing them to make decisions quickly and accurately. We compared a group of fingerprint examiners to a group of novices on their ability to search for information in fingerprints across two experiments--one where participants searched for target features within a single fingerprint and another where they searched for points of difference between two fingerprints. In both experiments, we also varied how useful the target feature was and whether participants searched for these targets in a typical fingerprint or one that had been scrambled. Experts more efficiently located targets when searching for them in intact but not scrambled fingerprints. In Experiment 1, we also found that experts more efficiently located target features classified as more useful compared to novices, but this expert-novice difference was not present when the target feature was classified as less useful. The usefulness of the target may therefore have influenced the search strategies that participants used, and the visual search advantages that experts display appear to depend on their vast experience with visual regularity in fingerprints. These results align with a domain-specific account of expertise and suggest that perceptual training ought to involve learning to attend to task-critical features.

12. Collective Intelligence in Fingerprint Analysis

- Abstract
When a fingerprint is located at a crime scene, a human examiner is counted upon to manually compare this print to those stored in a database. Several experiments have now shown that these professional analysts are highly accurate, but not infallible, much like other fields that involve high-stakes decision-making. One method to offset mistakes in these safety-critical domains is to distribute these important decisions to groups of raters who independently assess the same information. This redundancy in the system allows it to continue operating effectively even in the face of rare and random errors. Here, we extend this "wisdom of crowds" approach to fingerprint analysis by comparing the performance of individuals to crowds of professional analysts. We replicate the previous findings that individual experts greatly outperform individual novices, particularly in their false-positive rate, but they do make mistakes. When we pool the decisions of small groups of experts by selecting the decision of the majority, however, their false-positive rate decreases by up to 8% and their false-negative rate decreases by up to 12%. Pooling the decisions of novices results in a similar drop in false negatives, but increases their false-positive rate by up to 11%. Aggregating people's judgements by selecting the majority decision performs better than selecting the decision of the most confident or the most experienced rater. Our results show that combining independent judgements from small groups of fingerprint analysts can improve their performance and prevent these mistakes from entering courts.

13. An Expert-Novice Comparison of Feature Choice

- Abstract
Perceptual experts have learned to rapidly and accurately perceive the structural regularities that define categories and identities within a domain. They extract important features and their relations more efficiently than novices. We used fingerprint examination to investigate expert-novice differences in feature choice. On each fingerprint within our set, experts and novices selected one feature they thought was most useful for distinguishing a particular print and one feature they thought was least useful. We found that experts and novices often differed in the features they chose, and experts tended to agree more with each other. However, any such expert-novice difference appeared to depend on the image at hand typically emerging when salient or more conspicuous features of a fingerprint were unclear. We suggest that perceptual training ought to direct attention to useful features with the understanding that what is useful may change depending on the clarity of the stimuli.

Humans can see through the complexity of scenes, faces, and objects by quickly extracting their redundant low-spatial and low-dimensional global properties, or their style. It remains unclear, however, whether semantic coding is necessary, or whether visual stylistic information is sufficient, for people to recognize and discriminate complex images and categories. In two experiments, we systematically reduce the resolution of hundreds of unique paintings, birds, and faces, and test people's ability to discriminate and recognize them. We show that the stylistic information retained at extremely low image resolutions is sufficient for visual recognition of images and visual discrimination of categories. Averaging over the 3 domains, people were able to reliably recognize images reduced down to a single pixel, with large differences from chance discriminability across 8 different image resolutions. People were also able to discriminate categories substantially above chance with an image resolution as low as 2 × 2 pixels. We situate our findings in the context of contemporary computational accounts of visual recognition and contend that explicit encoding of the local features in the image, or knowledge of the semantic category, is not necessary for recognizing and distinguishing complex visual stimuli. The role of news media in the perpetuation of misinformation has faced increasing scrutiny. Concerns have been raised about news media's negative influence on mental health, increasing news avoidance, and decreasing trust in news. Constructive journalism is proposed to increase engagement with and trust in news media, reduce the mental health impact of news consumption, and provide a more accurate view of the world. However, constructive journalism studies primarily investigate the inclusion of solutions and positive emotions in news stories, to the exclusion of other techniques. Additionally, few studies have investigated constructive journalism's effects on trust and comprehension. We used a randomised-controlled repeated-measures experimental design to investigate the effects of a comprehensive set of constructive journalism techniques on mood, comprehension, and trust among 238 Australian participants. Participants who read constructive articles reported higher positive emotion, and lower negative emotion, compared to participants who read the same articles without constructive features. However, participants in the constructive condition demonstrated worse comprehension than participants in the control, an effect partially mediated by negative emotion but not effort. No significant differences in trust in journalism as an institution or in article content were present between groups. However, when accounting for interest, constructive journalism demonstrated a significant negative effect on trust in the information, though positive where it increased mood. Further research is needed to calibrate techniques which balance the positive effects of constructive journalism with its ability to convey information. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The proliferation of misinformation in contemporary information environments contributes to increasing polarization and decreasing trust in institutions and experts, both of which encourage further proliferation of misinformation. Increasing attention has been brought to the role of news media in the spread and uptake of misinformation, and to the role of journalists and news organizations in combatting this spread. Constructive journalism is a relatively new approach to reporting which, among other aims, looks to increase audience engagement, reduce polarization, and provide a more accurate view of events. In early 2020, we interviewed 16 journalism professionals from Europe (UK inclusive), Australia, Africa, and North America across a range formats to explore their perceptions of the use 'constructive' reporting strategies to address the spread of misinformation. We used thematic analysis to produce three themes and six subthemes in journalists' responses, 'apathy against the machine', with subthemes 'journalism as a moderator', and 'news and mental health'; 'standards as shared reality', with subthemes, 'pluralism not postmodernism', and 'this means information war'; and 'truth, trust, and the turn to transparency', with subthemes, 'facts necessary but not sufficient', and 'principles not particulars'. Constructive journalism was thought to address misinformation by increasing engagement with news and institutions, reducing polarization, providing a sense of shared reality amidst increasingly diverse perspectives, increasing trust, and reducing misperceptions encouraged by selection and reporting strategies. Constructive journalism may be a promising approach to addressing the spread and consequences of misinformation, however, empirical work is needed to evaluate the efficacy of the approach. This component contains our subset of 200 images for 48 similar female identities from the VGGFace2 dataset: http://www.robots.ox.ac.uk/~vgg/data/vgg_face2/meta_infor.html. The original dataset contains 8631 training identities and 500 identities test identities, with hundreds of ambient and varied images per identity (available to download for commercial/research purposes under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License). We constrained our subset to caucasian female identities as a convenience method of increasing similarity and the difficulty of the distractor trials in our experiment (i.e., similar mismatching identities are more challenging to tell apart). We further matched the identities in our subset on similarity by computing the distributional characteristics (mean, min, max of image) of each and comparing them side-by-side. The average, min, and max images of each identity (generated using MatLab 2018b) are included in distributional properties folder. We preserved the substantial natural variation across the images of each identity to generate dissimilar target trials (i.e., dissimilar matching identities are more challenging to tell together). All images in our subset have been reduced to 48x48 pixels and then enlarged to 400x400 pixels using smoothed bicubic resampling procedures. The set was then duplicated and inverted to create the inverted and upright sets. We do not have permission to share the fingerprints in a public repository. This component contains the full set of 24 pre-generated unique participant sequences (.txt) that are read into the open source experiment presentation software we developed for this project. The LiveCode source file (version 9.0.4) for presenting the sequences and materials to participants and collecting their responses is also included in the .zip files for each experiment, along with the instructional video participants view before completing each task. LiveCode’s Community Edition, is a free open source object-oriented, cross-platform, natural language rapid development environment that can be used for programming local (LiveCode) and web-based (HTML5) experiments. LiveCode is based on the Transcript programming language (a high-level xTalk scripting language like HyperCard’s HyperTalk), and is a great stepping stone to learning Javascript and Python. It is fit for developing experiments that require fine-grained control, complex sequencing, and heavy back-end processing. You can download LiveCode for PC, Linux or Mac at: https://downloads.livecode.com/livecode. You can run these experiments on your own computer (ours are running MacOS Mojave for this project) by installing the appropriate version of LiveCode Community, downloading the zip files, and loading the LC programs. The experiment folders can be stored anywhere on your machine but their file structure needs to be preserved for the experiments to run because the program is reading in the sequences, presenting the instructional videos, and showing and hiding the images on the fly.

49. Discriminating Scrambled Images with Covarying Domains and Seeds

- Abstract
Humans are highly sensitive to the structure or style of visual categories. We've shown previously that the global information retained at extremely low image resolutions is sufficient for people to detect the style of an image, and for discriminating the style of visual categories, with above chance accuracy. These findings suggest that explicit encoding of the local features in the image, or of the semantic category, is not necessary for recognising and distinguishing visual categories. In this study, we set out to determine whether people can discriminate large natural sets of images (referred to as "domains" for clarity) in which global, covariant information has been retained and where local information has been disrupted. We do this by systematically manipulating the relative location of the pixels within each image and across our three large sets of faces, birds, and paintings (https://osf.io/ncdkv). We use a discrimination task and signal detection methods to probe participants' perceptual sensitivity to the covariant structure that persists across our scrambled images.
