We show that there exists a strong connection between the generic formal neighborhood at a rational arc lying in the Nash set associated with a toric divisorial valuation on a toric variety and the formal neighborhood at the generic point of the same Nash set. This may be interpreted as the fact that, analytically along such a Nash set, the arc scheme of a toric variety is a product of a finite dimensional singularity and an infinite dimensional affine space., Comment: 24 pages

Let $k$ be a field of characteristic zero. This paper studies a problem proposed by Joseph F. Ritt in 1950. Precisely, we prove that (1) If $p\geq 2$ is an integer, for every integer $i\in\mathbb{N}$, the nilpotency index of the image of $T_i$ in the ring $k\{T\}/[T^p]$ equals $(i+1)p-i$. (2) For every pair of integers $(i,j)$, the nilpotency index of the image of $T_iU_j$ in the ring $k\{T\}/[TU]$ equals $i+j+1$.

Let X be a smooth projective complex variety, of dimension 3, whose Hodge numbers h^{3,0}(X), h^{1,0}(X) both vanish. Let f: X--> X be a birational map that induces an isomorphism on (dense) open subvarieties U,V of X. Then we show that the complex reduced varieties (X \ U), (X \ V) are piecewise isomorphic.

We introduce a quotient of the Grothendieck ring of varieties by identifying classes of universally homeomorphic varieties. We show that the standard realization morphisms factor through this quotient, and we argue that it is the correct value ring for the theory of motivic integration on formal schemes and rigid varieties in mixed characteristic. The present note is an excerpt of a detailed survey paper which will be published in the proceedings of the conference "Motivic integration and its interactions with model theory and non-archimedean geometry" (ICMS, 2008).

We study the differential properties of generalized arc schemes, and geometric versions of Kolchin's Irreducibility Theorem over arbitrary base fields. As an intermediate step, we prove an approximation result for arcs by algebraic curves.

We show how formal and rigid geometry can be used in the theory of complex singularities, and in particular in the study of the Milnor fibration and the motivic zeta function. We introduce the so-called analytic Milnor fiber associated to the germ of a morphism f from a smooth complex algebraic variety X to the affine line. This analytic Milnor fiber is a smooth rigid variety over the field of Laurent series C((t)). Its etale cohomology coincides with the singular cohomology of the classical topological Milnor fiber of f; the monodromy transformation is given by the Galois action. Moreover, the points on the analytic Milnor fiber are closely related to the motivic zeta function of f, and the arc space of X. We show how the motivic zeta function can be recovered as some kind of Weil zeta function of the formal completion of X along the special fiber of f, and we establish a corresponding Grothendieck trace formula, which relates, in particular, the rational points on the analytic Milnor fiber over finite extensions of C((t)), to the Galois action on its etale cohomology. The general observation is that the arithmetic properties of the analytic Milnor fiber reflect the structure of the singularity of the germ f., Comment: Some minor errors corrected.
