A ground-coupled heat pump (GCHP) system used to provide the space heating for an office room is a renewable, high performance technology. This paper discusses vapour compression-based HP systems, briefly describing the thermodynamic cycle calculations, as well as the coefficient of performance (COP) and CO2 emissions of a HP with an electro-compressor and compares different heating systems in terms of energy consumption, thermal comfort and environmental impact. It is focused on an experimental study performed to test the energy efficiency of the radiator or radiant floor heating system for an office room connected to a GCHP. The main performance parameters (COP and CO2 emissions) are obtained for one month of operation of the GCHP system, and a comparative analysis of these parameters is presented. Additionally, two numerical simulation models of useful thermal energy and the system COP in heating mode are developed using the Transient Systems Simulation (TRNSYS) software. Finally, the simulations obtained from TRNSYS software are analysed and compared to the experimental data, showing good agreement and thus validating the simulation models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The negative environmental impacts of burning fossil fuels have forced the energy research community seriously to consider renewable sources, such as naturally available solar energy. Thermally powered refrigeration technologies are classified into two categories: thermo-mechanical technology and sorption technology (open systems or closed systems). This paper provides a detailed review of the solar closed sorption (absorption and adsorption) refrigeration systems, which utilise working pairs (fluids). After an introduction of the basic principles of these systems, the history of development and recent advances in solar sorption refrigeration technologies are reported. The adsorption cooling typically has a lower heat source temperature requirement than the absorption cooling. Based on the coefficient of performance (COP), the absorption systems are preferred over the adsorption systems, and the higher temperature issues can be easily handled with solar adsorption systems. The thermodynamic properties of most common working fluids, as well as the use of ternary mixtures in solar-powered absorption systems, have been reviewed in this study. The paper also refers to new approaches to increase the efficiency and sustainability of the basic adsorption cycles, such as the development of hybrid or thermal energy storage adsorption systems. This research shows that solar-powered closed sorption refrigeration technologies can be attractive alternatives not only to serve the needs for air-conditioning, refrigeration, ice making, thermal energy storage or hybrid heating and cooling purposes but also to meet the demands for energy conservation and environmental protection. In Europe, high energy consumption in the building environment has raised the need for developing low-temperature heating systems both in new buildings and in retrofitting buildings. This paper addressed many different topics related to energy saving in central heating systems with reduced supply temperature and radiant panel heating including floor heating, ceiling heating and wall heating. The paper investigated the performance of these different types of low-temperature heating system using numerical modelling, simulation tools and also site measurements. Thus, energy performance of radiator and radiant floor heating systems connected to a ground-coupled heat pump (GCHP) is compared, as obtained with experimental measurements in an office room. Furthermore, the thermal comfort of these systems is compared and a mathematical model for numerical modelling of thermal emission from radiant floors is developed and experimentally validated. Additionally, a comparative analysis of the energy, environmental and economic performances of floor, wall, ceiling and floor-ceiling heating using numerical simulation is performed. Finally, the energy efficiency of a heat pump in conjunction with a radiator or radiant floor heating system is calculated for different supply, return, and air design temperatures. This study showed that floor-ceiling heating works better than other low-temperature heating systems regarding providing better thermal comfort, lower energy consumption, lower CO emission and lower operating cost. The ground-coupled heat pump (GCHP) system is a type of renewable energy technology providing space heating and cooling as well as domestic hot water. However, experimental studies on GCHP systems are still insufficient. This paper first presents an energy-operational optimisation device for a GCHP system involving insertion of a buffer tank between the heat pump unit and fan coil units and consumer supply using quantitative adjustment with a variable speed circulating pump. Then, the experimental measurements are used to test the performance of the GCHP system in different operating modes. The main performance parameters (energy efficiency and CO 2 emissions) are obtained for one month of operation using both classical and optimised adjustment of the GCHP system, and a comparative analysis of these performances is performed. In addition, using TRNSYS (Transient Systems Simulation) software, two simulation models of thermal energy consumption in heating, cooling and domestic hot-water operation are developed. Abstract: Energy consumption of buildings depends significantly on the criteria used for the indoor environment and building design and operation. The environmental factors that define the indoor environmental quality are: thermal comfort, indoor air quality, acoustic comfort and visual comfort. This paper approaches the numerical prediction of thermal comfort in closed spaces on the basis of PMV–PPD model, and its testing to asymmetric or nonuniform thermal radiation, as well as the indoor air quality simulation and control. The following are developed: a computation and testing model of thermal comfort in buildings, a computational model for indoor air quality numerical simulation, as well as a methodology to determine the outside airflow rate and to verify the indoor air quality in rooms, according to the European Standard CEN 1752. Also, the thermal comfort criteria for design of heating systems, the relationship between thermal environment and human performance, as well as the influence of carbon dioxide on human performance and productivity are presented. The performance of the developed computational models, implemented in two computer programs, is illustrated by using some numerical comparative applications for two building construction types. Ground-coupled heat pumps (GCHPs) are an efficient thermal energy production system that can satisfy the gap between heating and air-conditioning. Be that as it may, exploratory research on GCHPs is still lacking. The first objective of this article is to describe a utilitarian energy-efficiency improvement device for a vertical GCHP system that includes a buffer tank (BT) between the heat pump unit and the fan coil units and user supply, utilizing the quantitative regulation of water flow rate with a variable-speed circulation pump. At that point, the investigative estimations are utilized to test the performances of the GCHP system in various operating modes. Fundamental efficiency parameters (coefficient of performance (COP) and CO2 emission) are achieved for one month of running utilizing two control strategies of the GCHP—standard and optimized regulation of the water pump speed—and a benchmarking of these parameters is achieved. Exploratory research has indicated higher efficiency of the system for the flow regulation solution utilizing a BT and programmed control equipment for the circulation pump speed compared with the standard regulation solution (COPsys with 7–8% higher and CO2 emission level 7.5–8% lower). The second objective is to elaborate a simulation model of the necessary heat/cold in heating and air-conditioning periods, utilizing the Transient Systems Simulation (TRNSYS) program. Finally, the simulation, acquired utilizing the TRNSYS program, is analyzed and compared with experimental information, leading to a good agreement and, along these lines, the simulation model is approved.
