In this work, we investigate the influence of interlayer distance in a heterostructure containing both Kondo effects and short-range magnetic correlations. Our proposed heterostructure comprises three coupled square lattice layers. The first layer is governed by the Kondo-Heisenberg lattice model involving $f$- and $d$-electrons, which interact via Kondo and Heisenberg couplings, $J_{K}$ and $J_{H}$, respectively. The other two layers consist of non-interacting itinerant electrons, where coupling with the first layer is determined by two perpendicular hopping parameters. We find that varying the interlayer couplings induces electronic dynamics at the interface, altering the behavior of mean-field parameters describing the Kondo effect and short-range magnetic correlations. The system's temperature - interlayer hopping parameter phase diagram exhibits a sequence of discontinuous and continuous transitions. In the cases, $|J_{K}|<|J_{H}|$ and $|J_{K}|>|J_{H}|$ rich phase diagrams are found which include Kondo, ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic correlations. Due to technological needs, nanoscale heat management, energy conversion and quantum thermodynamics have become key areas of research, putting heat pumps and nanomotors center stage. The treatment of these particular systems often requires the use of adiabatic expansions in terms of the frequency of the external driving or the velocity of some classical degree of freedom. However, due to the difficulty of getting the expressions, most works have only explored first-order terms. Despite this, adiabatic expansions have allowed the study of intriguing phenomena such as adiabatic quantum pumps and motors, or electronic friction. Here, we use nonequilibrium Green's functions, within a Schwinger-Keldysh approach, to develop second-order expressions for the energy, heat, and charge currents. We illustrate, through two simple models, how the obtained formulas produce physically consistent results, and allow for the thermodynamic study of unexplored phenomena, such as second-order monoparametric pumping.

We investigate the growth of stellar discs in Milky Way-mass galaxies using the magnetohydrodynamical simulations of the Auriga Project in a full cosmological context. We focus on the gas accretion process along the discs, calculating the net, infall and outflow rates as a function of galactocentric distance, and investigate the relation between them and the star formation activity. The stellar distributions of around 70% of the simulated galaxies exhibit an ``inside-out'' pattern, with older (younger) stellar populations preferentially located in the inner (outer) disc regions. In all cases, we find a very tight correlation between the infall, outflow and net accretion rates, as well as between these three quantities and the star formation rate. This is because the amount of gas which is ultimately available for star formation in each radial ring depends not only on the infall rates, but also on the amount of gas leaving the disc in outflows, which directly relates to the local star formation level. Therefore, any of these rates can be used to identify galaxies with inside-out growth. For these galaxies, the correlation between the dominant times of accretion/star formation and disc radius is well fitted by a linear function. We also find that, when averaged over galaxies with formation histories similar to the Milky Way, the simulated accretion rates show a similar evolution (both temporally- and radially-integrated) to the usual accretion prescriptions used in chemical evolution models, although some major differences arise at early times and in the inner disc regions., Comment: 19 pages, 13 figures

Galaxy clusters are the largest gravitationally-bound structures in the Universe. As such, during merger events with similar systems, they release an enormous amount of energy that is dissipated through the formation of shock waves and turbulence in the intracluster medium (ICM), the hot ionised plasma permeating the cluster volume. These shock waves are believed to be ideal sites for electron acceleration that, in the presence of ubiquitous magnetic fields in the ICM, are capable of producing elongated non-thermal radio features typically observed in the outskirts of dynamically disturbed clusters, also known as radio relics. In this work, we analyse a hydrodynamical re-simulation of merging galaxy clusters, extracted from a large set of zoom-in cosmological simulations of The Three Hundred Project, to study the evolution and diversity of merger shocks and their associated diffuse radio emission within the framework of the diffusive shock acceleration scenario., Comment: 3 pages, 2 figures. Using cosmological simulations of galaxy cluster regions from The Three Hundred project we study the nature of gas in filaments feeding massive clusters. By stacking the diffuse material of filaments throughout the cluster sample, we measure average gas properties such as density, temperature, pressure, entropy and Mach number and construct one-dimensional profiles for a sample of larger, radially-oriented filaments to determine their characteristic features as cosmological objects. Despite the similarity in velocity space between the gas and dark matter accretion patterns onto filaments and their central clusters, we confirm some differences, especially concerning the more ordered radial velocity dispersion of dark matter around the cluster and the larger accretion velocity of gas relative to dark matter in filaments. We also study the distribution of shocked gas around filaments and galaxy clusters, showing that the surrounding shocks allow an efficient internal transport of material, suggesting a laminar infall. The stacked temperature profile of filaments is typically colder towards the spine, in line with the cosmological rarefaction of matter. Therefore, filaments are able to isolate their inner regions, maintaining lower gas temperatures and entropy. Finally, we study the evolution of the gas density-temperature phase diagram of our stacked filament, showing that filamentary gas does not behave fully adiabatically through time but it is subject to shocks during its evolution, establishing a characteristic z = 0, entropy-enhanced distribution at intermediate distances from the spine of about 1 - 2 $h^{-1}$ Mpc for a typical galaxy cluster in our sample., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures. Star formation, together with the associated chemical and energy feedback, is one of the most important processes in galaxy evolution. The star formation activity in galaxies defines and affects many of their fundamental properties, such as stellar mass, morphology and chemical enrichment levels. Simple models for star formation in cosmological hydrodynamical simulations have shown to be successful in reproducing the star formation rate (SFR) levels and shapes of different types of galaxies. However, with the advent of high-resolution simulations and more detailed observations, more sophisticated star formation models are needed; in particular, to better understand the relation between star formation and the amount of gas in the atomic and molecular phases. In this work, we apply a novel star formation model, recently developed to work in the context of hydrodynamical simulations, to the study of the SFR in Milky Way-mass galaxies. The new implementation describes the formation of molecular hydrogen from atomic material, considering also possible dependencies with the chemical abundance of the gas. This allows to implement various star formation models, where the SFR of a gas cloud is determined by the atomic and/or molecular gas phases, and to compare their predictions to recent observational results., Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures. The Local Group (LG) consists of two giant spiral galaxies, the Milky Way (MW) and Andromeda (M31), and several smaller galaxies. The MW and M31 are approaching each other at a radial velocity of about $-109\,$km\,s$^{-1}$. Observational evidence suggests that there is an overall infalling motion of gas and galaxies in the LG, dominated by the dynamics of its two main members. From our perspective, this flow imprints a velocity dipole pattern in the sky when Galactic rotation is removed. We investigate the kinematic properties of gas and galaxies in the LG using a suite of high-resolution simulations performed by the {\sc Hestia} (High-resolution Environmental Simulations of The Immediate Area) collaboration. Our simulations include the correct cosmography surrounding LG-like regions. We build sky maps from the local, Galactic and LG standard of rest reference frames. Our findings show that the establishment of a radial velocity dipole near the preferred barycentre direction is a natural outcome of simulation kinematics for material \textit{outside} the MW virial radius after removing galaxy rotation when the relative radial velocity of MW and M31 is similar to the observed value. These results favour a scenario where gas and galaxies stream towards the LG barycentre, producing the observed velocity dipole., Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures. Exploring the interplay between topological phases and photons opens new avenues for investigating novel quantum states. Here we show that superconducting resonators can serve as sensitive probes for properties of topological insulator nanowires (TINWs) embedded within them. By combining a static, controllable magnetic flux threading the TINW with an additional oscillating electromagnetic field applied perpendicularly, we show that orbital resonances can be generated and are reflected in periodic changes of the Q-factor of the resonator as a function of the flux. This response probes the confinement of the two-dimensional Dirac orbitals on the surface of the TINW, revealing their density of states and specific transition rules, as well as their dependence on the applied flux. Our approach represents a promising cross-disciplinary strategy for probing topological solid-state materials using state-of-the-art photonic cavities, which would avoid the need for attaching contacts, thereby enabling access to electronic properties closer to the pristine topological states.

Ruddelsden-Popper halide perovskites are highly versatile quasi-two-dimensional energy materials with a wide range of tunable optoelectronic properties. Here we use the all-inorganic Cs$_{n+1}$Pb$_n$X$_{3n+1}$ Ruddelsden-Popper perovskites with X=I, Br, and Cl to systematically model the effect of octahedral tilting distortions on the energy landscape, band gaps, macroscopic polarization, and the emergence of Rashba-/Dresselhaus splitting in these materials. We construct all unique $n=1$ and $n=2$ structures following from octahedral tilts and use first-principles density functional theory to calculate total energies, polarizations and band structures, backed up by band gap calculations using the $GW$ approach. Our results provide design rules for tailoring structural distortions and band-structure properties in all-inorganic Ruddelsden-Popper perovskites through the interplay of the amplitude, direction, and chemical character of the antiferrodistortive distortion modes contributing to each octahedral tilt pattern. Our work emphasizes that, in contrast to 3D perovskites, polar structures may arise from a combination of octahedral tilts, and Rashba-/Dresselhaus splitting in this class of materials is determined by the direction and Pb-I orbital contribution of the polar distortion mode.

We investigate the kinematic properties of gas and galaxies in the Local Group (LG) using high-resolution simulations performed by the {\sc Hestia} (High-resolution Environmental Simulations of The Immediate Area) collaboration. Our simulations include the correct cosmography surrounding LG-like regions consisting of two main spiral galaxies of $\sim 10^{12}$~M$_\odot$, their satellites and minor isolated galaxies, all sharing the same large-scale motion within a volume of a few Mpc. We characterise the gas and galaxy kinematics within the simulated LGs, from the perspective of the Sun, to compare with observed trends from recent HST/COS absorption-line observations and LG galaxy data. To analyse the velocity pattern of LG gas and galaxies seen in the observational data, we build sky maps from the local standard of rest, and the galactic and local group barycentre frames. Our findings show that the establishment of a radial velocity dipole at low/high latitudes, near the preferred barycentre direction, is a natural outcome of simulation kinematics for material {\it outside} the Milky Way virial radius after removing galaxy rotation when the two main LG galaxies are approaching. Our results favour a scenario where gas and galaxies stream towards the LG barycentre producing a velocity dipole resembling observations. While our study shows in a qualitative way the global matter kinematics in the LG as part of its on-going assembly, quantitative estimates of gas-flow rates and physical conditions of the LG gas have to await a more detailed modeling of the ionization conditions, which will be presented in a follow-up paper., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We use the 30 simulations of the Auriga Project to estimate the temporal dependency of the inflow, outflow and net accretion rates onto the discs of Milky Way-like galaxies. The net accretion rates are found to be similar for all galaxies at early times, increasing rapidly up to $\sim 10~\mathrm{M}_\odot \, \mathrm{yr}^{-1}$. After $\sim 6~\mathrm{Gyr}$ of evolution, however, the net accretion rates are diverse: in most galaxies, these exhibit an exponential-like decay, but some systems instead present increasing or approximately constant levels up to the present time. An exponential fit to the net accretion rates averaged over the MW analogues yields typical decay time-scale of $7.2~\mathrm{Gyr}$. The analysis of the time-evolution of the inflow and outflow rates, and their relation to the star formation rate (SFR) in the discs, confirms the close connection between these quantities. First, the inflow$/$outflow ratio stays approximately constant, with typical values of $\dot{M}_\mathrm{out}/ \dot{M}_\mathrm{in} \sim 0.75$, indicating that the gas mass involved in outflows is of the order of 25% lower compared to that involved in inflows. A similar behaviour is found for the SFR$/$inflow rate ratio, with typical values between 0.1 and 0.3, and for the outflow rate$/$SFR which varies in the range $3.5$--$5.5$. Our results show that continuous inflow is key to the SFR levels in disc galaxies, and that the star formation activity and the subsequent feedback in the discs is able to produce mass-loaded galaxy winds in the disc-halo interface., Comment: 21 pages, 15 figures

In recent years, several artificial molecular motors driven and controlled by electric currents have been proposed. Similar to Brownian machines, these systems work by turning random inelastic tunneling events into a directional rotation of the molecule. Despite their importance as the ultimate component of future molecular machines, their modeling has not been sufficiently studied. Here, we develop a dynamical model to describe these systems. We illustrate the validity and usefulness of our model by applying it to a well-known molecular motor, showing that the obtained results are consistent with the available experimental data. Moreover, we demonstrate how to use our model to extract some difficult-to-access microscopic parameters. Finally, we include an analysis of the expected effects of current-induced forces (CIFs). Our analysis suggests that, although nonconservative contributions of the CIFs can be important in some scenarios, they do not seem important in the analyzed case. Despite this, the conservative contributions of CIFs could be strong enough to significantly alter the system's dynamics.

We analyze the confinement of electronic surface states in a model of a topological insulator nanowire. Spin-momentum locking in the surface states reduces unwanted backscattering in the presence of non-magnetic disorder and is known to counteract localization for certain values of magnetic flux threading the wire. We show that intentional backscattering can be induced for a range of conditions in the presence of a nanowire constriction. We propose a geometry for a nanowire that involves two constrictions and show that these regions form effective barriers that allow for the formation of a quantum dot. We analyze the zero-temperature non-interacting electronic transport through the device using the Landauer-B\"{u}ttiker approach and show how externally applied magnetic flux parallel to the nanowire and electrostatic gates can be used to control the spectrum of the quantum dot and the electronic transport through the surface states of the model device.

Chang'e-3(CE-3) has been the first spacecraft to soft-land on the Moon since the Soviet Union's Luna 24 in 1976. The spacecraft arrived at Mare Imbrium on December 14, 2013 and the same day, Yutu lunar rover separated from lander to start its exploration of the surface and the subsurface around the landing site. The rover was equipped, among other instruments, with two Lunar Penetrating Radar systems (LPR) having a working frequency of 60 and 500 MHz. The radars acquired data for about two weeks while the rover was slowly moving along a path of about 114 m. At Navigation point N0209 the rover got stacked into the lunar soil and after that only data at fixed position could be collected. The low frequency radar data have been analyzed by different authors and published in two different papers, which reported totally controversial interpretations of the radar cross sections. The present study is devoted to resolve such controversy carefully analyzing and comparing the data collected on the Moon by Yutu rover and on Earth by a prototype of LRP mounted onboard a model of the CE-3 lunar rover. Such analysis demonstrates that the deep radar features previously ascribed to the lunar shallow stratigraphy are not real reflectors, rather they are signal artefacts probably generated by the system and its electromagnetic interaction with the metallic rover.

The quantification of visual aesthetics and complexity have a long history, the latter previously operationalized via the application of compression algorithms. Here we generalize and extend the compression approach beyond simple complexity measures to quantify algorithmic distance in historical and contemporary visual media. The proposed "ensemble" approach works by compressing a large number of transformed versions of a given input image, resulting in a vector of associated compression ratios. This approach is more efficient than other compression-based algorithmic distances, and is particularly suited for the quantitative analysis of visual artifacts, because human creative processes can be understood as algorithms in the broadest sense. Unlike comparable image embedding methods using machine learning, our approach is fully explainable through the transformations. We demonstrate that the method is cognitively plausible and fit for purpose by evaluating it against human complexity judgments, and on automated detection tasks of authorship and style. We show how the approach can be used to reveal and quantify trends in art historical data, both on the scale of centuries and in rapidly evolving contemporary NFT art markets. We further quantify temporal resemblance to disambiguate artists outside the documented mainstream from those who are deeply embedded in Zeitgeist. Finally, we note that compression ensembles constitute a quantitative representation of the concept of visual family resemblance, as distinct sets of dimensions correspond to shared visual characteristics otherwise hard to pin down. Our approach provides a new perspective for the study of visual art, algorithmic image analysis, and quantitative aesthetics more generally.

In this paper, we present for the first time comprehensive and detailed results on the correspondence between the extrapolated deep inelastic structure function $g_1$ of both the proton and the neutron with the same quantity measured in the nucleon resonance region. We use a QCD parameterization of the world data on DIS spin structure functions, extrapolated into the nucleon resonance region and averaged over various intervals in the scaling variable $x$. We compare the results with the large data set collected in the quark-hadron transition region by the CLAS collaboration, averaged over the same intervals. We present this comparison as a function of the momentum transfer $Q^2$. We find that, depending on the averaging interval and the minimum momentum transfer chosen, a clear transition to quark-hadron duality can be observed in both nucleon species. Furthermore, we show, for the first time, the scaling behavior of $g_1$ measured in the resonance region at sufficiently high momentum transfer. Our results can be used to quantify the deviations from the applicability of pQCD for data taken at moderate energies, and help with extraction of quark distribution functions from such data., Comment: Final version accepted by Phys. In this work, we propose a class of ferroelectrics (which we denote "double-path" ferroelectrics), characterized by two competing polarization switching paths for which the change in polarization is different and in fact of opposite sign. Depending on which path is favorable under given conditions, this leads to different identification of up- and down-polarized states. Since the sign of piezoelectric response depends on the assignment of up- or down-polarized state for a specific structure, this means that the material can exhibit different signs of the piezoelectric response under different conditions. We focus on HfO$_2$ as a key example. Our first-principles calculations show that there are two competing paths in HfO$_2$, resulting from different displacements of the atoms from the initial to the final structures, and the change in polarization along these two paths is of opposite sign. These results provide a natural explanation for the recently observed discrepancy in the signs of piezoelectric responses in HfO$_2$ between theoretical first-principles calculations and experimental observation. Further, this allows predictions of how to favor one path over another by changes in conditions and compositional tuning. This family of materials also includes other candidates, such as CuInP$_2$S$_6$ and theoretically proposed LaVO$_3$-SrVO$_3$ superlattice. Supply chain traceability systems have become central in many industries, however, traceability data is often commercially sensitive, and firms seek to keep it confidential to protect their competitive advantage. This is at odds with calls for greater transparency in supply chains for sustainability and efficiency. In this research paper, we develop a solution to this conflict. We demonstrate that sanitised data can be used to confirm the authenticity of products and anonymously verify the rights of an actor to access detailed traceability data. Using the data set of The Three Hundred project, i.e. a suite of 324 hydrodynamical resimulations of cluster-sized haloes, we study galaxy cluster mergers and their effect on colour and luminosity changes of their brightest cluster galaxies (BCG). We track the main progenitor of each halo at z=0 and search for merger situations based on its mass accretion history, defining mergers as very rapid increases in the halo mass. Based upon the evolution of the dynamical state of the cluster we define a pre- and post-merger phase. We create a list of all these events and statistically study their mass ratio and timescales, with the former verifying that all instances are in fact major mergers. By comparing to a control sample of clusters without mergers, we study the effect mergers have on the stellar component of the BCG. Analysing the mass, age and metallicity of the BCG stellar particles, we find that the stellar content of BCGs grows significantly during mergers and, even though the main growth mechanism is the accretion of older stars, there is even a burst in star formation induced by the merger. In our simulations, BCGs in mergers form in median around 70 per cent more stars than those normally growing, although this depends on the radius considered for defining the BCG. Regarding observable properties, we see an increase in SDSS-u luminosity of 20 per cent during mergers, accompanied by a slightly slower increase of the galaxy g-r colour as compared to the control sample., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures. Recent observations have revealed remarkable insights into the gas reservoir in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of galaxy haloes. In this paper, we characterise the gas in the vicinity of Milky Way and Andromeda analogues in the HESTIA (High resolution Environmental Simulations of The Immediate Area) suite of constrained Local Group (LG) simulations. The HESTIA suite comprise of a set of three high-resolution {\sc arepo}-based simulations of the LG, run using the Auriga galaxy formation model. For this paper, we focus only on the $z = 0$ simulation datasets and generate mock skymaps along with a power spectrum analysis to show that the distributions of ions tracing low-temperature gas (HI and SiIII) are more clumpy in comparison to warmer gas tracers (OVI, OVII and OVIII). We compare to the spectroscopic CGM observations of M31 and low-redshift galaxies. HESTIA under-produces the column densities of the M31 observations, but the simulations are consistent with the observations of low-redshift galaxies. A possible explanation for these findings is that the spectroscopic observations of M31 are contaminated by gas residing in the CGM of the Milky Way., Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures, revised version, Accepted in MNRAS

We present a new model to describe the star formation process in galaxies, which includes the description of the different gas phases -- molecular, atomic, and ionized -- together with its metal content. The model, which will be coupled to cosmological simulations of galaxy formation, will be used to investigate the relation between the star formation rate (SFR) and the formation of molecular hydrogen. The model follows the time evolution of the molecular, atomic and ionized phases in a gas cloud and estimates the amount of stellar mass formed, by solving a set of five coupled differential equations. As expected, we find a positive, strong correlation between the molecular fraction and the initial gas density, which manifests in a positive correlation between the initial gas density and the SFR of the cloud., Comment: 3 pages, 2 figures. Closely motivated by financial considerations, we develop an integration theory which is not classical i.e. it is not necessarily associated to a measure. The base space, denoted by $\mathcal{S}$ and called a trajectory space, substitutes the set $\Omega$ in probability theory and provides a fundamental structure via conditional subsets $\mathcal{S}_{(S,j)}$ that allows the definition of conditional integrals. The setting is a natural by-product of no arbitrage assumptions that are used to model financial markets and games of chance (in a discrete infinite time framework). The constructed conditional integrals can be interpreted as required investments, at the conditioning node, for hedging an integrable function, the latter characterized a.e. and in the limit as we increase the number of portfolios used. The integral is not classical due to the fact that the original vector space of portfolio payoffs is not a vector lattice. In contrast to a classical stochastic setting, where price processes are associated to conditional expectations (with respect to risk neutral measures), we uncover a theory where prices are naturally given by conditional non-lattice integrals. Crystalline materials with broken inversion symmetry can exhibit a spontaneous electric polarization, which originates from a microscopic electric dipole moment. Long-range polar or anti-polar order of such permanent dipoles gives rise to ferroelectricity or antiferroelectricity, respectively. However, the recently discovered antiferroelectrics of fluorite structure (HfO$_2$ and ZrO$_2$) are different: A non-polar phase transforms into a polar phase by spontaneous inversion symmetry breaking upon the application of an electric field. Here, we show that this structural transition in antiferroelectric ZrO$_2$ gives rise to a negative capacitance, which is promising for overcoming the fundamental limits of energy efficiency in electronics. Our findings provide insight into the thermodynamically 'forbidden' region of the antiferroelectric transition in ZrO$_2$ and extend the concept of negative capacitance beyond ferroelectricity. This shows that negative capacitance is a more general phenomenon than previously thought and can be expected in a much broader range of materials exhibiting structural phase transitions.

In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in nanoelectromechanical devices, current-driven quantum machines, and the mechanical effects of electric currents on nanoscale conductors. Here, we carry out a thorough study of the current-induced forces and the electronic friction of systems whose electronic effective Hamiltonian can be described by an archetypal model, a single energy level coupled to two reservoirs. Our results can help better understand the general conditions that maximize the performance of different devices modeled as a quantum dot coupled to two electronic reservoirs. Additionally, they can be useful to rationalize the role of current-induced forces in the mechanical deformation of one-dimensional conductors.

Network representations often cannot fully account for the structural richness of complex systems spanning multiple levels of organisation. Recently proposed high-order information-theoretic signals are well-suited to capture synergistic phenomena that transcend pairwise interactions; however, the exponential-growth of their cardinality severely hinders their applicability. In this work, we combine methods from harmonic analysis and combinatorial topology to construct efficient representations of high-order information-theoretic signals. The core of our method is the diagonalisation of a discrete version of the Laplace-de Rham operator, that geometrically encodes structural properties of the system. The integration of semiconductor Josephson junctions (JJs) in superconducting quantum circuits provides a versatile platform for hybrid qubits and offers a powerful way to probe exotic quasiparticle excitations. Recent proposals for using circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED) to detect topological superconductivity motivate the integration of novel topological materials in such circuits. Here, we report on the realization of superconducting transmon qubits implemented with $(Bi_{0.06}Sb_{0.94})_{2}Te_{3}$ topological insulator (TI) JJs using ultra-high vacuum fabrication techniques. Microwave losses on our substrates with monolithically integrated hardmask, used for selective area growth of TI nanostructures, imply microsecond limits to relaxation times and thus their compatibility with strong-coupling cQED. We use the cavity-qubit interaction to show that the Josephson energy of TI-based transmons scales with their JJ dimensions and demonstrate qubit control as well as temporal quantum coherence. Nanotechnology has not only provided us the possibility of developing quantum machines but also noncanonical power sources able to drive them. Here we focus on studying the performance of quantum machines driven by arbitrary combinations of equilibrium reservoirs and a form of engineered reservoirs consisting of noninteracting particles but whose distribution functions are nonthermal. We provide the expressions for calculating the maximum efficiency of those machines without needing any knowledge of how the nonequilibrium reservoirs were actually made. The formulas require the calculation of a quantity that we term entropy current, which we also derive. We illustrate our methodology through a solvable toy model where heat "spontaneously" flows against the temperature gradient.

Understanding how genotypes map onto phenotypes, fitness, and eventually organisms is arguably the next major missing piece in a fully predictive theory of evolution. We refer to this generally as the problem of the genotype-phenotype map. Though we are still far from achieving a complete picture of these relationships, our current understanding of simpler questions, such as the structure induced in the space of genotypes by sequences mapped to molecular structures, has revealed important facts that deeply affect the dynamical description of evolutionary processes. Empirical evidence supporting the fundamental relevance of features such as phenotypic bias is mounting as well, while the synthesis of conceptual and experimental progress leads to questioning current assumptions on the nature of evolutionary dynamics-cancer progression models or synthetic biology approaches being notable examples. This work delves into a critical and constructive attitude in our current knowledge of how genotypes map onto molecular phenotypes and organismal functions, and discusses theoretical and empirical avenues to broaden and improve this comprehension. We use first principles density functional theory calculations to investigate the effect of biaxial strain in the low-temperature structural and ferroelectric properties of [111]-oriented SrTiO$_3$. We find that [111] biaxial strain, achievable by coherent epitaxial growth along the [111] direction, induces structural distortions in SrTiO$_3$ that are not present in either bulk or [001]-oriented SrTiO$_3$. Under [111] biaxial strain, SrTiO$_3$ displays ferroelectricity at tensile strain, and paraelectricity at compressive strain. We compute the phonon spectrum and macroscopic polarization of SrTiO$_3$ as a function of [111] biaxial strain, and relate our results to the predictions of the free energy phenomenological model of Pertsev, Tagantsev and Setter [Phys. Rev. B 61, 825 (2000); Phys. Rev. B 65, 219901 (2002)].
