We propose a quantum model of spinning black holes with the integrable ring singularities. Exciting new fundamental scientific questions are currently being raised regarding nonequilibrium dynamics in spin systems, as this directly relates to low power and low loss energy transport for spintronics. Inelastic neutron scattering (INS) is an indispensable tool to study spin excitations in complex magnetic materials. However, conventional INS spectrometers currently only perform steady-state measurements and probe averaged properties over many collision events between spin excitations in thermodynamic equilibrium, while the exact picture of re-equilibration of these excitations remains unknown. In this work, we designed and implemented a time-resolved laser-neutron pump-probe capability at HYSPEC (Hybrid Spectrometer, beamline 14-B) at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. This capability allows us to excite out-of-equilibrium magnons with a nanosecond pulsed laser source and probe the resulting dynamics using INS. Here, we discussed technical aspects to implement such a capability in a neutron beamline, including choices of suitable neutron instrumentation and material systems, laser excitation scheme, experimental configurations, and relevant firmware and software development to allow for time-synchronized pump-probe measurements. We demonstrated that the laser-induced nonequilibrium structural factor is able to be resolved by INS in a quantum magnet. The method developed in this work will provide SNS with advanced capabilities for performing out-of-equilibrium measurements, opening up an entirely new research direction to study out-of-equilibrium phenomena using neutrons.

We predict the limit cycle solution for a ring-shape bosonic condensate of exciton-polaritons confined in an optically induced rotating trap. The limit cycle manifests itself with polarization oscillations on a characteristic timescale of tens of picoseconds. The effect arises due to the interplay between orbital motion and the polarization degree of freedom. It is specific to spinor bosonic condensates and would be absent in a scalar case, where a bi-stability of stationary solutions would be observed instead. This work offers a tool of initialisation and control of qubits based on superpositions of polariton condensates characterised by different topologic charges.

Within the Floquet theory of periodically driven quantum systems, we demonstrate that an off-resonant high-frequency electromagnetic field can induce the Lifshitz phase transition in periodical structures described by the one-dimensional repulsive Hubbard model with the nearest and next-nearest-neighbor hopping. The transition changes the topology of electron energy spectrum at the Fermi level, transforming it from the two Fermi points to the four Fermi points, which facilitates the emergence of the superconducting fluctuations in the structure. This work is inspired by recent experiments on the formation of vortices in exciton-polariton condensates placed in rotating optical traps. We study theoretically the dynamics of formation of such vortices and elucidate the fundamental role of the mode competition effect in determining the properties of stationary polariton states triggered by stimulated scattering of exciton-polaritons. The interplay between linear and non-linear effects is shown to result in a peculiar polariton dynamics. However, near the lasing threshold, the predominant contribution of the nonlinear effects is the saturation of the linear gain.

We take advantage of the polariton bistability in semiconductor microcavities to estimate the interaction strength between lower exciton-polariton and dark exciton states. We combine the quasiresonant excitation of polaritons and the nominally forbidden two-photon excitation (TPE) of dark excitons in a GaAs microcavity. To this end, we use an ultranarrow linewidth cw laser for the TPE process that allows us to determine the energy of dark excitons with high spectral resolution. Our results evidence a sharp drop in the polariton transmission intensity and width of the hysteresis cycle when the TPE process is resonant with the dark exciton energy, highly compromising the bistability of the polariton condensate. This behavior demonstrates the existence of a small symmetry breaking such as that produced by an effective in-plane magnetic field, allowing us to directly excite the dark reservoir. We numerically reproduce the collapse of the hysteresis cycle with the increasing dark exciton population, treating the evolution of a polariton condensate in a one-mode approximation, coupled to the exciton reservoir via polariton-exciton scattering processes., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

We study theoretically the polarization dynamics in a ring-shape bosonic condensate of exciton-polaritons confined in a rotating trap. The interplay between the rotating potential and TE-TM splitting of polariton modes offers a tool of control over the spin state and the angular momentum of the condensate. Specific selection rules describing the coupling of pseudospin and angular momentum are formulated. The resonant coupling between states having linear and circular polarizations leads to the polarization beats. The effect may be seen as a polariton analogy to the electronic magnetic resonance in the presence of constant and rotating magnetic fields. Remarkably, spin beats are induced by a purely mechanical rotation of the condensate.

Concentric ring exciton polariton condensates emerging under non-resonant laser pump in an annular trapping potential support persistent circular currents of polaritons. The trapping potential is formed by a cylindrical micropillar etched in a semiconductor microcavity with embedded quantum wells and a repulsive cloud of optically excited excitons under the pump spot. The symmetry of the potential is subject to external control via manipulation by its pump-induced component. In the manuscript, we demonstrate excitation of concentric ring polariton current states with predetermined vorticity which we trace using interferometry measurements with a spherical reference wave. We also observe the polariton condensate dynamically changing its vorticity during observation, which results in pairs of fork-like dislocations on the time-averaged interferogram coexisting with azimuthally homogeneous photoluminescence distribution in the micropillar.

We study formation of superfluid currents of exciton polaritons in annular polariton condensates in a cylindrical micropillar cavity under the spatially localised nonresonant optical pumping. Since polariton condensates are strongly nonequilibrium systems, the trapping potential for polaritons, formed by the pillar edge and the reservoir of optically induced incoherent excitons, is complex in general case. Its imaginary part includes the spatially distributed gain from the pump and losses of polaritons in the condensate. We show that engineering the gain-loss balance in the micropillar plane gives access to the excited states of the polariton condensate. We demonstrate both theoretically and experimentally formation of vortices in double concentric ring polariton condensates in the complex annular trap potential.

We keep track of the orbital degree of freedom of an exciton polariton condensate, confined in an optical trap, and reveal the stochastic switching of persistent annular polariton currents in the pulse-periodic excitation regime.In an elliptic trap, the low-lying in energy polariton current states are inherent in a two-petalled density distribution and swirling phase. In the stochastic regime, the averaged over multiple excitation pulses density distribution gets homogenised in the azimuthal direction, while the weighted phase extracted from interference experiments experiences two compensating each other jumps, when varying around the center of the trap. Breaking the reciprocity of the system with a supplemental control optical pulse makes it possible to switch the system from the stochastic regime to the deterministic regime of an arbitrary polariton circulation.

It is now routine to make Bose-Einstein condensates of polaritons with long enough lifetime and low enough disorder to travel ballistically for hundreds of microns in quasi-one-dimensional (1D) wires. We present observations of a polariton condensate injected at one point in a quasi-1D ring, with a well-defined initial velocity and direction. A clear precession of the circular polarization is seen, which arises from an effective spin-orbit coupling term in the Hamiltonian. Our theoretical model accurately predicts the experimentally observed behavior, and shows that "zitterbewegung" behavior plays a role in the motion of the polaritons., Comment: accepted by Phys. Rev. We consider a laterally confined two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG), placed inside a gyrotropic cavity. Splitting of the circularly polarized electromagnetic modes leads to the emergence of the ground state spontaneous magnetization, anomalous Hall effect and chiral edge currents in 2DEG. We examine the dependence of the magnetization and edge current density on the system size for two particular cases of the confining potential: infinite wall and parabolic potentials. We show that paramagnetic and diamagnetic contributions to the edge currents have qualitatively different dependence on the system size. These findings pave the route to the design quantum electrodynamic engineering of the material properties of the mesoscopic electron systems.
