We present integral field unit observations of the Phoenix Cluster with the JWST Mid-infrared Instrument's Medium Resolution Spectrometer (MIRI/MRS). We focus this study on the molecular gas, dust, and star formation in the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG). We use precise spectral modeling to produce maps of the silicate dust, molecular gas, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the inner $\sim$50 kpc of the cluster. We have developed a novel method for measuring the optical depth from silicates by comparing the observed H$_2$ line ratios to those predicted by excitation models. We provide updated measurements of the total molecular gas mass of $2.2^{+0.4}_{-0.1} \times 10^{10}$ ${\rm M}_\odot$, which agrees with CO-based estimates, providing an estimate of the CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor of $\alpha_{\rm CO} = 0.9 \pm 0.2\,{\rm M}_{\odot}\,{\rm pc}^{-2}\,({\rm K}\,{\rm km}\,{\rm s}^{-1})^{-1}$; an updated stellar mass of $M_* = 2.6 \pm 0.5 \times 10^{10}$ ${\rm M}_\odot$; and star formation rates averaged over 10 and 100 Myr of $\langle{\rm SFR}\rangle_{\rm 10} = 1340 \pm 100$ ${\rm M}_\odot\,{\rm yr}^{-1}$ and $\langle{\rm SFR}\rangle_{\rm 100} = 740 \pm 80$ ${\rm M}_\odot\,{\rm yr}^{-1}$, respectively. The H$_2$ emission seems to be powered predominantly by star formation within the central $\sim 20$ kpc, with no need for an extra particle heating component as is seen in other BCGs. Additionally, we find nearly an order of magnitude drop in the star formation rates estimated by PAH fluxes in cool core BCGs compared to field galaxies, suggesting that hot particles from the intracluster medium are destroying PAH grains even in the centralmost 10s of kpc., Comment: 21 pages, 13 figures, 2 tables. We present new James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) Medium-Resolution Spectrometer (MRS) observations of the nearby ultra-luminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG) F08572+3915 NW. These integral field spectroscopic (IFS) data reveal a kpc-scale warm-molecular rotating disk and biconical outflow traced by the H$_2$ $\nu$ = 0$-$0 S(1), S(2), S(3), and S(5) rotational transitions. The outflow maintains a relatively constant median (maximum) projected velocity of 1100 km s$^{-1}$ (3000 km s$^{-1}$) out to $\sim$ 1.4 kpc from the nucleus. The outflowing H$_2$ material is slightly warmer (640 $-$ 700 K) than the rotating disk material (460 $-$ 520 K), perhaps due to shock heating in the highly turbulent outflowing material. This outflow shares the same kinematics and orientation as the sub-kpc scale warm-H$_2$ outflow traced by the ro-vibrational H$_2$ lines in Keck AO near-infrared IFS data. However, this warm-H$_2$ outflow is significantly faster than the sub-kpc scale cold-molecular outflow derived from multi-transition far-infrared OH observations with Herschel and the $\gtrsim$ kpc-scale cold-molecular outflow mapped by mm-wave interferometric CO 1$-$0 observations with IRAM-PdBI and NOEMA. The new JWST data bolster the scenario where the buried quasar in this ULIRG is excavating the dust screen, accelerating perhaps as much as 60\% of the dusty warm-molecular material to velocities beyond the escape velocity, and thus influencing the evolution of the host galaxy., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

Fast accreting, extremely luminous quasars contribute heavily to the feedback process within galaxies. While these systems are most common at cosmic noon ($z\sim2$), here we choose to study PDS 456, an extremely luminous ($L_{bol}\sim 10^{47}$ erg s$^{-1}$) but nearby ($z\sim0.185$) quasar where the physics of feedback can be studied in greater detail. We present the results from our analysis of the JWST MIRI/MRS integral field spectroscopic (IFS) data of this object. The extreme brightness of PDS 456 makes it challenging to study the extended emission even in this nearby object. MIRI/MRS instrumental effects are mitigated by using complementary NIRSpec and MUSE IFS data cubes. We show clear evidence of a multiphase gas outflow extending up to 15 kpc from the central source. This includes emission from warm molecular (H$_2$ $\nu$ = 0 $-$ 0 and 1 $-$ 0) and ionized (e.g. Pa$\alpha$, [O III], [Ne III], [Ne VI]) gas with typical blueshifted velocities down to $-500$ km s$^{-1}$. We are also able to probe the nuclear dust emission in this source through silicate and PAH emission features but are unable to spatially resolve it. Our results are consistent with this powerful quasar driving a radiatively driven wind over a broad range of distances and altering the ionization structure of the host galaxy., Comment: 26 pages, 15 figures

We present a comprehensive analysis of the post-outburst evolution of the FU Ori object HBC 722 in optical/near-infrared (NIR) photometry and spectroscopy. Using a modified viscous accretion disk model, we fit the outburst epoch SED to determine the physical parameters of the disk, including $\dot{M}_\mathrm{acc} = 10^{-4.0} \ M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$, $R_\mathrm{inner} = 3.65 \ R_\odot$, $i = 79^\circ$, and a maximum disk temperature of $T_\mathrm{max} = 5700$ K. We then use a decade of optical/NIR spectra to demonstrate a changing accretion rate drives the visible-range photometric variation, while the NIR shows the outer radius of the active accretion disk expands outward as the outburst progresses. We also identify the major components of the disk system: a plane-parallel disk atmosphere in Keplerian rotation and a 2-part warm disk wind that is collimated near the star and wide-angle at larger radii. The wind is traced by classic wind lines, and appears as a narrow, low-velocity, deep absorption component in several atomic lines spanning the visible spectrum and in the CO 2.29$\mu$m band. We compare the wind lines to those computed from wind models for other FU Ori systems and rapidly accreting young stellar disks and find a 4000-6000 K wind can explain the observed line profiles. Fitting the progenitor spectrum, we find $M_* = 0.2 \ M_\odot$ and $\dot{M}_\mathrm{progenitor} = 7.8 \times 10^{-8} \ M_\odot \ \mathrm{yr}^{-1}$. We present JWST MIRI/NIRSpec observations of the extremely red quasar SDSS J165202.64+172852.3 at z~3, one of the most luminous quasars known to date, driving powerful outflows and hosting a clumpy starburst, amidst several interacting companions. We estimate the black hole (BH) mass of the system based on the broad H$\alpha$ and H$\beta$ lines, as well as the Pa$\beta$ emission in the IR and MgII in the UV. We recover a very broad range of mass estimates, with constraints ranging between log $M_{\rm BH}$=9 and 10.1, which is exacerbated if imposing a uniform BLR geometry at all wavelengths. Several factors may contribute to the large spread: measurement uncertainties (insufficient sensitivity to detect the broadest component of the faint Pa$\beta$ line, spectral blending, ambiguities in the broad/narrow component distinction), lack of virial equilibrium (in a system characterised by powerful outflows and rapid accretion), and uncertainties on the luminosity-inferred size of the broad line region, a.o. given central dust obscuration. We constrain the stellar mass via SED fitting, suggesting the host to be extremely massive at $10^{12.8\pm 0.5} M_\odot$ - ~2 dex above the characteristic mass of the Schechter fit to the z=3 stellar mass function. Notably, J1652's central BH might be interpreted as being either undermassive, overmassive, or in line with the BH mass-stellar mass relation, depending on the choice of assumptions. The recovered Eddington ratio varies accordingly, but exceeds 10% in any case. We put our results into context by providing an extensive overview and discussion of recent literature results and their associated assumptions. Our findings provide an important demonstration of the uncertainties inherent in virial BH mass estimates, which are of particular relevance in the JWST era given the growing number of studies on rapidly accreting quasars at high redshift., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, submitted to A&A, comments welcome

We follow up our photometric study of the post-outburst evolution of the FU Ori object V960 Mon with a complementary spectroscopic study at high dispersion that uses time series spectra from Keck/HIRES. Consistent with the photometric results reported in Carvalho et al. 2023, we find that the spectral evolution of V960 Mon corresponds to a decrease in the temperature of the inner disk, driven by a combination of decreasing accretion rate and increasing inner disk radius. We also find that although the majority of the absorption lines are well-matched by our accretion disk model spectrum, there are several strong absorption line families and a few emission lines that are not captured by the model. By subtracting the accretion disk model from the data at each epoch, we isolate the wind/outflow components of the system. The residuals show both broad and highly blueshifted profiles, as well as narrow and only slightly blueshifted profiles, with some lines displaying both types of features., Comment: 21 pages, 19 figures, accepted by ApJ

The objects that emit extragalatic fast radio bursts (FRBs) remain unidentified. Studies of the host galaxies and environments of accurately localised ($\lesssim1$ arcsec) FRBs promise to deliver critical insights into the nature of their progenitors. Here we demonstrate the effects of observational selection biases on analyses of the distributions of FRB host-galaxy properties (including star-formation rate, SFR, and stellar mass, $M_{*}$), and on the distributions of FRB offsets from the centres of their hosts. We consider the effects of "radio selection", wherein FRBs with larger dispersion measures and scattering timescales are less likely to be detected, and the effects of "optical selection", wherein FRBs with fainter host galaxies are more likely to have unidentified or mis-identified hosts. We develop a plausible, illustrative model for these effects in observations of FRBs and their host galaxies by combining the output catalogues of a semi-analytic galaxy formation model with a recently developed algorithm to associate FRBs with host galaxies (PATH). We find that optical selection biases are most important for the host-galaxy $M_{*}$ and SFR distributions, and that radio selection biases are most important for the distribution of FRB projected physical offsets. For our fiducial simulation of FRBs at $z<0.5$, the selection biases cause the median host-galaxy SFR to be increased by $\sim0.3$ dex, and the median $M_{*}$ by $\sim0.5$ dex. The median projected physical offset is increased by $\sim2$ kpc ($\sim0.25$ dex). These effects are sufficiently large so as to merit careful consideration in studies of localised FRBs, and our simulations provide a guide towards their mitigation., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

To improve the understanding of the relation between electrode curvature and energy storage mechanisms, a systematic investigation of the correlation between convex and concave electrode surfaces and the differential capacitance of an electrochemical double layer capacitor using molecular dynamics simulations is presented. Each electrode consists of three layers of curved graphene sheets with a convex and concave surface to which the constant potential method was applied. The differential capacitance shows a fluctuating behavior with respect to the curvature radius of the convex and concave areas of the electrode. The reasons identified for this are differences in the geometric arrangement and solvation of the adsorbed ions as well as a steric hindrance prohibiting further charge accumulation. Because the total differential capacitance is calculated as a weighted average of contributions from concave and convex surfaces, the influence of individual curvatures on the total capacitance is significantly reduced for the total electrode surface., Comment: To be published in the Journal of Physical Chemistry C

The time evolution of optically excited carriers in semiconductor quantum wells and quantum dots is analyzed for their interaction with LO-phonons. Both the full two-time Green's function formalism and the one-time approximation provided by the generalized Kadanoff-Baym ansatz are considered, in order to compare their description of relaxation processes. It is shown that the two-time quantum kinetics leads to thermalization in all the examined cases, which is not the case for the one-time approach in the intermediate-coupling regime, even though it provides convergence to a steady state. A microscopic theory for the interaction of carriers with LO phonons is used to study the ultrafast carrier dynamics in nitride-based semiconductor quantum dots. It is shown that the efficiency of scattering processes is directly linked to quasi-particle renormalizations. The electronic states of the interacting system are strongly modified by the combined influence of quantum confinement and polar coupling. A microscopic theory is used to study the optical properties of semiconductor quantum dots. The dephasing of a coherent excitation and line-shifts of the interband transitions due to carrier-carrier Coulomb interaction and carrier-phonon interaction are determined from a quantum kinetic treatment of correlation processes. We investigate the density dependence of both mechanisms and clarify the importance of various dephasing channels involving the localized and delocalized states of the system., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures

We study the carrier capture and relaxation due to Coulomb scattering in nitride-based quantum dots on the basis of population kinetics. For the states involved in the scattering processes the combined influence of the quantum-confined Stark effect and many-body renormalizations is taken into account. The charge separation induced by the built-in field has important consequences on the capture and relaxation rates. It is shown that its main effect comes through the renormalization of the energies of the states involved in the collisions, and leads to an increase in the scattering efficency., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

While time-dependent perturbation theory shows inefficient carrier-phonon scattering in semiconductor quantum dots, we demonstrate that a quantum kinetic description of carrier-phonon interaction predicts fast carrier capture and relaxation.
