The data were compared between survivors and non-survivors. Multivariate logistic regressions were performed to identify the variables most significantly associated with in-hospital mortality.Results: The in-hospital mortality rate was 60.5%. Compared to survivors, non-survivors more often presented with pressure sores (P=0.005) and lymphopenia (P< 0.001), were more often treated with invasive mechanical ventilation (P< 0.001), and less often underwent geriatric assessment (P< 0.001). Non-survivors demonstrated higher mean levels of C-reactive protein, and lower mean values of serum cholesterol, triglycerides, total protein, and albumin (P< 0.001 for all comparisons). On multivariate analysis, the following variables were most significantly associated with in-hospital mortality in the entire cohort: the presence of pressure sores (odds ratio [OR], 4.34; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.68– 11.48; P=0.003) and lymphopenia (OR, 4.09; 95% CI, 1.51– 11.08; P=0.006), and serum cholesterol (OR, 0.98; 95% CI, 0.96– 0.99; P=0.003).Conclusion: Among elderly acutely ill patients who initiated NGT feeding during hospitalization, in-hospital mortality was extremely high. The factors most strongly associated with in-hospital mortality were the presence of pressure sores and lymphopenia, and lower serum cholesterol levels. These findings may provide useful prognostic information for decision-making regarding initiation of NGT feeding in elderly hospitalized patients.Keywords: aging, enteral feeding, hospitalization, prognosis

Abstract

We study auctions with severe bounds on the communication allowed: each bidder may only transmit t bits of information to the auctioneer. We consider both welfare- and profit-maximizing auctions under this communication restriction. For both measures, we determine the optimal auction and show that the loss incurred relative to unconstrained auctions is mild. We prove non-surprising properties of these kinds of auctions, e.g., that in optimal mechanisms bidders simply report the interval in which their valuation lies in, as well as some surprising properties, e.g., that asymmetric auctions are better than symmetric ones and that multi-round auctions reduce the communication complexity only by a linear factor.

Abstract

Negative results obtained in AMS searches by Dellinger et al. on mostly unrefined ores have led them to conclude that the very heavy long-lived species found in chemically processed samples with ICP-SFMS by Marinov et al. are artifacts. We argue that it may not be surprising that results obtained from small random samplings of inhomogeneous natural minerals would contrast with concentrations found in homogeneous materials extracted from large quantities of ore. We also point out that it is possible that the groups of counts at masses 296 and 294 seen by Dellinger et al. could be, within experimental uncertainties, due to $^{296}$Rg and $^{294}$eka-Bi in long-lived isomeric states. In such case, the experiments of Dellinger et al. lend support to the experiments of Marinov et al., Comment: 2 pages. Accepted for publication in Int. J. Mod. Phys. E

Abstract

Based on the observation of the long-lived isotopes 261Rg and 265Rg (Z = 111, t(1/2) >= 10^(8) y) in natural Au, an experiment was performed to enrich Rg in 99.999% Au. 16 mg of Au were heated in vacuum for two weeks at a temperature of 1127 deg. C (63 deg. C above the melting point of Au). The content of 197Au and 261Rg in the residue was studied with high resolution inductively coupled plasma-sector field mass spectrometry (ICP-SFMS). The residue of Au was 3x10^(-6) of its original quantity. The recovery of Rg was a few percent. The abundance of Rg compared to Au in the enriched solution was about 2x10^(-6), which is a three to four orders of magnitude enrichment. It is concluded that the evaporation rate of Rg from an Au matrix in vacuum at 63 deg. C above the Au melting point is lower than that of Au. This experiment reinforces our first observation of Rg in a terrestrial material. As before it is concluded that a long-lived isomeric state exists in 261Rg and that it probably belongs to a new class of isomeric states, namely high spin super- or hyperdeformed isomeric states., Comment: 5 pages, 7 figures

Evidence for the existence of long-lived isotopes with atomic mass numbers 261 and 265 and abundance of (1-10)x10$^{-10}$ relative to Au has been found in a study of natural Au using an inductively coupled plasma - sector field mass spectrometer. The measured masses fit the predictions made for the masses of $^{261}$Rg and $^{265}$Rg (Z=111) and for some isotopes of nearby elements.
