Topological insulators (TIs) are a striking example of materials in which topological invariants are manifested in robustness against perturbations. Their most prominent feature is the emergence of topological edge states with reduced dimension at the boundary between areas with distinct topological invariants. The observable physical effect is unidirectional robust transport, unaffected by defects or disorder. TIs were originally observed in the integer quantum Hall effect for fermionic systems of correlated electrons. However, during the past decade the concepts of topological physics have been introduced into numerous fields beyond condensed matter, ranging from microwaves and photonic systems to cold atoms, acoustics and even mechanics. Recently, TIs were proposed in exciton-polariton systems organized as honeycomb lattices, under the influence of a magnetic field. Topological phenomena in polaritons are fundamentally different from all topological effects demonstrated experimentally thus far: exciton-polaritons are part-light part-matter quasiparticles emerging from the strong coupling of quantum well excitons and cavity photons. Here, we demonstrate experimentally the first exciton-polariton TI. This constitutes the first symbiotic light-matter TIs. Our polariton lattice is excited non-resonantly, and the chiral topological polariton edge mode is populated by a polariton condensation mechanism. We image real- and Fourier-space to measure photoluminescence, and demonstrate that the topological edge mode avoids defects, and that the propagation direction of the mode can be reversed by inverting the applied magnetic field. Our exciton-polariton TI paves the way for a variety of new topological phenomena, as they involve light-matter interaction, gain, and perhaps most importantly - exciton-polaritons interact with one another as a nonlinear many-body system.

We analyze the transport of light in the bulk and at the edge of photonic Lieb lattices, whose unique feature is the existence of a flat band representing stationary states in the middle of the band structure that can form localized bulk states. We find that transport in bulk Lieb lattices is significantly affected by the particular excitation site within the unit cell, due to overlap with the flat band states. Additionally, we demonstrate the existence of new edge states in anisotropic Lieb lattices. These states arise due to a virtual defect at the lattice edges and are not described by the standard tight-binding model., Comment: 8 pages; 4 figures

We present the experimental reconstruction of sub-wavelength features from the far-field intensity of sparse optical objects: sparsity-based sub-wavelength imaging combined with phase-retrieval. As examples, we demonstrate the recovery of random and ordered arrangements of 100 nm features with the resolution of 30 nm, with an illuminating wavelength of 532 nm. Our algorithmic technique relies on minimizing the number of degrees of freedom; it works in real-time, requires no scanning, and can be implemented in all existing microscopes - optical and non-optical.

We study Anderson localization and propagation of partially-spatially incoherent wavepackets in linear disordered potentials, motivated by the insight that interference phenomena resulting from multiple scattering are affected by the coherence of the waves. We find that localization is delayed by incoherence: the more incoherent the waves are, the longer they diffusively spread while propagating in the medium. However, if all the eigenmodes of the system are exponentially localized (as in one- and two-dimensional disordered systems), any partially-incoherent wavepacket eventually exhibits localization with exponentially-decaying tails, after sufficiently long propagation distances. We present the experimental reconstruction of sub-wavelength features from the far-field of sparse optical objects. We show that it is sufficient to know that the object is sparse, and only that, and recover 100 nm features with the resolution of 30 nm, for an illuminating wavelength of \lambda=532 nm. Our technique works in real-time, requires no scanning, and can be implemented in all existing microscopes - optical and non-optical.

We theoretically demonstrate features of Anderson localization in the Tonks-Girardeau gas confined in one-dimensional (1D) potentials with controlled disorder. That is, we investigate the evolution of the single particle density and correlations of a Tonks-Girardeau wave packet in such disordered potentials. The wave packet is initially trapped, the trap is suddenly turned off, and after some time the system evolves into a localized steady state due to Anderson localization. The density tails of the steady state decay exponentially, while the coherence in these tails increases. The latter phenomenon corresponds to the same effect found in incoherent optical solitons.

We propose a scheme for observing dark stationary waves in a Tonks-Girardeau (TG) gas. The scheme is based on parity-selective dynamical "evaporation" of the gas via a time-dependent potential, which excites the gas from its ground state towards a desired specially-tailored many-body state. These excitations of the TG gas are analogous to linear partially coherent nondiffracting beams in optics, as evident from the mapping between the quantum dynamics of the TG gas and the propagation of incoherent light in one-dimensional linear photonic structures., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure

The dynamics of matter-wave solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) is considerably affected by the presence of a surrounding thermal cloud and by condensate depletion during its evolution. We analyze these aspects of BEC soliton dynamics, using time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (TDHFB) theory. The condensate is initially prepared within a harmonic trap at finite temperature, and solitonic behavior is studied by subsequently propagating the TDHFB equations without confinement. Numerical results demonstrate the collapse of the BEC via collisional emission of atom pairs into the thermal cloud, resulting in splitting of the initial density into two solitonic structures with opposite momentum. Each one of these solitary matter waves is a mixture of condensed and noncondensed particles, constituting an analog of optical random-phase solitons., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, new TDHFB results

We show that a Bose-Einstein condensate and a portion of its surrounding thermal cloud can exhibit mutual self-trapping, supported by the attractive particle interactions, and not by the external confinement. We show analytically, numerically, and experimentally that a transversely stable one-dimensional [(1+1)D] bright Kerr soliton can exist in a 3D bulk medium. The transverse instability of the soliton is completely eliminated if it is made sufficiently incoherent along the transverse dimension.
