2. Teaching and Learning in a Multilingual Europe: Findings from a Cross-European Study

Abstract

School classrooms within the EU are multilingual learning environments. The diversity of pupils in classrooms raises significant challenges for teachers, but to date, there are no data from large-scale surveys that compare views within and across European countries. A bespoke questionnaire was designed to examine views of current classroom learning environments with respect to the multilingualism. The questionnaire was piloted and subsequently completed by 2792 teachers across different European countries. Eleven countries provided sufficient data for analyses. Results from structural equation modelling showed that teachers' attitudes could be reliably measured across Europe with the use of carefully devised questionnaire, whose loading and factor structure remained invariant across countries. Teachers' views about multilingualism were most challenged by the numbers of children in their classes, not the percentage of multilingual pupils in the class. Countries differed in how they perceived multilingualism, with their differences leading to distinctive country clusters. Gender and education level (elementary vs. secondary) differences were also observed irrespective of country. These findings enhance our understanding of the role that the characteristics of teachers and their classrooms play in a multilingual setting across diverse European settings. The practical relevance of the results and new opportunities for teacher training are discussed.

Abstract

Anion exchange membranes (AEMs) are a promising class of materials for applications that require selective ion transport, such as fuel cells, water purification, and electrolysis devices. Studies of structure–morphology–property relationships of ion-exchange membranes revealed that block copolymers exhibit improved ion conductivity and mechanical properties due to their microphase-separated morphologies with well-defined ionic domains. While most studies focused on symmetric diblock or triblock copolymers, here, the first example of a midblock quaternized pentablock AEM is presented. A symmetric ABCBA pentablock copolymer was functionalized to obtain a midblock brominated polymer. Solution cast films were then quaternized to obtain AEMs with resulting ion exchange capacities (IEC) ranging from 0.4 to 0.9 mmol/g. Abstract

We present results of temperature dependent measurements of dynamics of micellar nanoparticle - polymer composites of fixed volume fraction and variable polymer chain grafting density. For nanoparticles with lower grafting density we observe dynamically arrested state at low temperatures corresponding to an attractive glass while at high temperature the same system shows relaxation typical of a repulsive glass. For higher grafting density, the low temperature dynamics resembles more of a gel which crosses over to a repulsive glass at high temperature. 14. The Rab5 effector FERRY links early endosomes with mRNA localization

Abstract

Localized translation is vital to polarized cells and requires precise and robust distribution of different mRNAs and ribosomes across the cell. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms are poorly understood and important players are lacking. Here, we discovered a Rab5 effector, the five-subunit endosomal Rab5 and RNA/ribosome intermediary (FERRY) complex, that recruits mRNAs and ribosomes to early endosomes through direct mRNA-interaction. FERRY displays preferential binding to certain groups of transcripts, including mRNAs encoding mitochondrial proteins. Deletion of FERRY subunits reduces the endosomal localization of transcripts in cells and has a significant impact on mRNA levels. Clinical studies show that genetic disruption of FERRY causes severe brain damage. We found that, in neurons, FERRY co-localizes with mRNA on early endosomes, and mRNA loaded FERRY-positive endosomes are in close proximity of mitochondria. FERRY thus transforms endosomes into mRNA carriers and plays a key role in regulating mRNA distribution and transport.

Abstract

The size of knots is negatively correlated with bending strength in sawn timber and it is therefore used as a quality grading criterion in national roundwood grading standards. Some standards even use the size of the largest knot as the sole estimate for individual log knottiness. The size of knots is determined by crown horizontal extension, which in turn is dependent on the impact of competing trees. Thus, with knot size models that are competition-dependent, roundwood quality due to knottiness can be simulated for different management al-ternatives. However, these types of models, calibrated on uneven-sized Norway spruce in Fennoscandia, are currently not available. Therefore, the objective of this study is to develop a competition-dependent model framework for prediction of the largest knot size per stem height section, for application within uneven-sized Norway spruce stands. Data from terrestrial laser scanning of an uneven-sized stand in southern Sweden are used to calibrate a modular prediction framework, consisting of interlinked allometric statistical models. Alternative framework sub-models are presented and the preferred model combination can be selected according to context and available input data. The flexible modular format enables further development of separate sub-components for adaptation to growing conditions not covered by the current calibration range.

Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate the safety and technical success of the AndraValvulotome™ device (Andramed GmbH, Reutlingen, Germany) in patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) requiring bypass surgery using the great saphenous vein (GSV) as graft. Methods: This was a multicenter, post-market observational study conducted in 2021 in 11 German centers. Safety and efficacy data were prospectively collected and analyzed. Primary endpoints were the absence of device-related serious adverse events until 30 ± 7 days follow-up, the clinical efficacy of valvulotomy, which was defined as pulsatile blood flow in the bypass and the number of insufficiently destroyed vein valves. Secondary endpoints were the number of valvulotomy passages, the primary patency rate of the venous bypass (determined by a color-duplex sonography showing a normal blood flow through the bypass and absence of stenosis or occlusion), and the primary technical success defined as the absence of product-specific (serious) adverse events and clinical efficacy. Results: Fifty-nine patients were enrolled. The mean age of the patients was 71 years (46–91), and 74.6% were males. The vein material used for bypass grafting had a median length of 47.5 cm (range 20–70 cm) with a median diameter of 5.0 mm (range 3–6 mm) and 4.0 mm (range 2–6 mm) in the proximal and distal segments, respectively. The technical success rate was 96.6%. The primary patency rate was 89.9% at 30 days follow-up. The clinical efficacy was rated as very good in 81% of patients, fair in 17%, and poor in 2%. Between 1 and 5 (average 2.9) valvulotome passages were performed. One product-related serious adverse event was recorded (bypass vein dissection). Conclusion: The AndraValvulotome™ can be considered a safe and effective device to disrupt venous valves during in situ non-reversed bypass surgeries using GSV grafts in patients with PAD. Abstract

We investigated the formation of ohmic contacts as a result of intermetallic phase formation between V, Al, Ni, and Au in V/Al/Ni/Au metal stacks on n-Al0.65Ga0.35N:Si. In particular, the influence of Au metal thickness and annealing temperature was analysed. The lowest annealing temperature of 750 °C for an ohmic contact with a smooth surface and a contact resistivity of about 2.4 × 10−5 Ωcm2 was achieved for V(15 nm)/Al(120 nm)/Ni(20 nm)/Au(40 nm). The lowest contact resistivity is accompanied by formation of two thin interfacial regions consisting of AlN and an Au-rich phase. We suggest that not only the formation of thin interfacial AlN layer is important for a low contact resistance, but also the formation of the Au-rich interface can have a favourable effect on the contact properties.

Abstract

Historically, chimney/snorkel endovascular aortic repair (Ch-EVAR) emerged as a rescue technique to revascularize and/or preserve inadvertently covered critical branch vessels during infrarenal aortic endografting. Next, in its evolutionary path, Ch-EVAR offered a viable treatment option for complex aortic repair, and particularly in situations where fenestrated/ branched EVAR was not a therapeutic option due to the lack of availability and/or anatomical constraints. In this context, this technique offered distinct advantages such as off-the-shelf availability, straightforward implantation techniques, and lower resource use-intensity enabling performance by a large number of operators managing patients in many centers around the world.
