Over the past decades, libraries of stellar spectra have been used in a large variety of science cases, including as sources of reference spectra for a given object or a given spectral type. Despite the existence of large libraries and the increasing number of projects of large-scale spectral surveys, there is to date only one very high-resolution spectral library offering spectra from a few hundred objects from the southern hemisphere (UVES-POP) . We aim to extend the sample, offering a finer coverage of effective temperatures and surface gravity with a uniform collection of spectra obtained in the northern hemisphere. Between 2010 and 2020, we acquired several thousand echelle spectra of bright stars with the Mercator-HERMES spectrograph located in the Roque de Los Muchachos Observatory in La Palma, whose pipeline offers high-quality data reduction products. We have also developed methods to correct for the instrumental response in order to approach the true shape of the spectral continuum. Additionally, we have devised a normalisation process to provide a homogeneous normalisation of the full spectral range for most of the objects. We present a new spectral library consisting of 3256 spectra covering 2043 stars. It combines high signal-to-noise and high spectral resolution over the entire range of effective temperatures and luminosity classes. We aim to unravel the interior mixing profile of the pulsating eclipsing binary KIC9850387 by comparing its dynamical parameters and the parameters derived through a combination of evolutionary and asteroseismic modelling. We created a grid of stellar evolutionary models using the stellar evolutionary code \textsc{mesa} and performed an isochrone-cloud (isocloud) based evolutionary modelling of the system. We then generated a grid of pulsational models using the stellar pulsation code \textsc{gyre} based on the age constraints from the evolutionary modelling. Finally, we performed asteroseismic modelling of the observed $\ell=1$ and $\ell=2$ period-spacing patterns, utilising different combinations of observational constraints, merit functions, and asteroseismic observables to obtain strong constraints on the interior properties of the primary star. Through a combination of asteroseismic modelling and dynamical constraints, we found that the system comprises two main-sequence components at an age of $1.2\pm0.1$ Gyr. We also observed that asteroseismic modelling provided stronger constraints on the interior properties than evolutionary modelling. Overall, we found high levels of interior mixing and posited that this is a result of intrinsic non-tidal mixing mechanisms due to a similar observed behaviour in single stars. We investigated the high-frequency regime of KIC9850387 and found evidence of the surface effect as well as rotational splitting in the form of a prograde-retrograde dipole g$_{1}$ mode doublet with a missing zonal mode. We find that the dynamical parameters and the parameters extracted from the asteroseismic modelling of period-spacing patterns are only barely compliant, reinforcing the need for homogeneous analyses of samples of pulsating eclipsing binaries that aim to calibrating interior mixing profiles., Comment: 21 pages, 18 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Eclipsing binaries (EBs) are unique benchmarks for stellar evolution. On the one hand, detached EBs hosting at least one star with detectable solar-like oscillations constitute ideal test objects to calibrate asteroseismic measurements. On the other hand, the oscillations and surface activity of stars that belong to EBs offer unique information about the evolution of binary systems. This paper builds upon previous works dedicated to red giant stars (RG) in EBs -- 20 known systems so far -- discovered by the NASA Kepler mission. Here we report the discovery of 16 RGs in EBs also from the Kepler data. This new sample includes three SB2-EBs with oscillations and six close systems where the RG display a clear surface activity and complete oscillation suppression. Based on dedicated high-resolution spectroscopic observations (Apache Point Observatory, Observatoire de Haute Provence), we focus on three main aspects. From the extended sample of 14 SB2-EBs, we first confirm that the simple application of the asteroseismic scaling relations to RGs overestimates masses and radii of RGs, by about 15% and 5%. This bias can be reduced by employing either new asteroseismic reference values for RGs, or model-based corrections of the asteroseismic parameters. Secondly, we confirm that close binarity leads to a high level of photometric modulation (up to 10%), and a suppression of solar-like oscillations. In particular, we show that it reduces the lifetime of radial modes by a factor of up to 10. Thirdly, we use our 16 new systems to complement previous observational studies that aimed at constraining tidal dissipation in interacting binaries. In particular, we identify systems with circular orbits despite relatively young ages, which suggests exploring complementary tidal dissipation mechanisms in the future. Eclipsing binary systems with components that pulsate in gravity modes ($g$ modes) allow for simultaneous and independent constraints of the chemical mixing profiles of stars. We aim to assemble a sample of $g$-mode pulsators in detached eclipsing binaries with the purpose of finding good candidates for future evolutionary and asteroseismic modelling. In addition, we present a case study of the eclipsing binary KIC9850387, identified as our most promising candidate. We selected all of the detached eclipsing binaries in the Kepler eclipsing binary catalogue and performed a visual inspection to determine the presence and density of $g$ modes, and the presence of $g$-mode period-spacing patterns in their frequency spectra. We then characterised our sample based on their $g$-mode pulsational parameters and binary and atmospheric parameters. A spectroscopic follow-up of KIC9850387 was then performed. We then performed spectral disentangling followed by atmospheric modelling and abundance analysis for the primary star. We utilised an iterative approach to simultaneously optimise the pulsational and eclipse models, and subsequently performed an analysis of the pressure- ($p$-) and $g$-mode pulsational frequencies. We compiled a sample of 93 Kepler eclipsing binary stars with $g$-mode pulsating components and identified clear $g$-mode period-spacing patterns in the frequency spectra of seven of these systems. We found that the $g$-mode pulsational parameters and the binary and atmospheric parameters of our sample are weakly correlated at best. We find that the eclipsing binary KIC9850387 is a double-lined spectroscopic binary in a near-circular orbit with an intermediate-mass primary, and a solar-like secondary. We propose a methodological framework to perform forward asteroseismic modeling of stars with a convective core, based on gravity-mode oscillations. These probe the near-core region in the deep stellar interior. The modeling relies on a set of observed high-precision oscillation frequencies of low-degree coherent gravity modes with long lifetimes and their observational uncertainties. Identification of the mode degree and azimuthal order is assumed to be achieved from rotational splitting and/or from period spacing patterns. This paper has two major outcomes. The first is a comprehensive list and discussion of the major uncertainties of theoretically predicted gravity-mode oscillation frequencies based on linear pulsation theory, caused by fixing choices of the input physics for evolutionary models. Guided by a hierarchy among these uncertainties of theoretical frequencies, we subsequently provide a global methodological scheme to achieve forward asteroseismic modeling. We properly take into account correlations amongst the free parameters included in stellar models. Aside from the stellar mass, metalicity and age, the major parameters to be estimated are the near-core rotation rate, the amount of convective core overshooting, and the level of chemical mixing in the radiative zones. This modeling scheme allows for maximum likelihood estimation of the stellar parameters for fixed input physics of the equilibrium models, followed by stellar model selection considering various choices of the input physics. Our approach uses the Mahalanobis distance instead of the often used $\chi^2$ statistic and includes heteroscedasticity. Fractally branching vascular systems are a complex physiological requirement shared by humans with all higher terrestrial life forms, including other vertebrates, insects, and higher land plants. Vascular trees, networks, and tree-network composites are therefore mapped and quantified by the VESsel GENeration Analysis (VESGEN) software according to weighted physiological vascular rules that include vessel connectivity, tapering and bifurcational branching. According to fluid dynamics, successful vascular transport depends upon a complex distributed system of highly regulated laminar flow. VESGEN has elucidated changes in vascular patterning resulting from inflammatory, developmental and other signaling pathways within numerous tissues of major model organisms important for Space Biology, especially for rodents. Important early stage regenerative opportunities have been identified by VESGEN vascular analysis for visual impairments in the human retina, and is currently being used for research into astronaut visual and ocular disorders associated with long duration missions. The VESGEN 2D software is a mature, automated, widely published capability for which beta testing and public release by NASA is planned for the upcoming year. Early-stage capabilities for VESGEN 3D analysis are under development for the rodent retina and intestine as prototype tissues. A prototype VESGEN 2D Bioinformatics software capability has also been developed to associate phenotypic changes in molecular expression with vascular structure and function. By new VESGEN bioinformatic innovations, expression patterns of the genetic, transcriptional, protein and other markers for regulatory molecules such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and their receptors, often indicators of tissue oxygenation status, are co-localized with alterations in vascular pattern. Biomarkers are therefore mapped and quantified as information dimensions directly correlated with the spatial dimensions of a vascular pattern. Further important technology innovations by NASA include substantial image segmentation advances for more automated binary extraction of the grayscale vascular patterns, together with informative associated image quality assessments. Vascular mapping and quantification capabilities for the rodent retina and intestine are illustrated for VESGEN 2D, along with technology status reports on VESGEN 3D and Bioinformatic capabilities.
