The relationship between two key factors of parental burnout of mothers of children with disabilities was studied on a population of 69 women. Exhaustion and helplessness--two subscales of the new instrument: Parental Burnout Measure-12--showed a decreasing correlation with coherence and personal resiliency. Multiple regression analysis showed coherence as more predicative of exhaustion, while personal resiliency of helplessness. The research did not present any relation between sociodemographic factors or the type of disability (Autism Spectrum Disorder versus Cerebral Palsy) and the level of parental burnout. The results can be considered as significant in designing actions that would support the activities of mothers in the rehabilitation of their children.

This study examined the factorial structure of the Polish version of the Parental Burnout Assessment (PBA-PL) and its relation with other variables, previously shown to be antecedents or outcomes of parental burnout. The PBA-PL was administered to a total sample of 2,130 parents along with other instruments depending on the study. Factorial analyses of the PBA-PL supported both the original four-factor model of parental burnout (exhaustion related to parenting, feelings of being fed up with parenting, emotional distancing from one's children, and contrast with previous parental self) and a second-order model with a global parental burnout underlying the four first-order factors. Both subscale and global scores were reliable. Significant correlations were found between PBA-PL and neuroticism, emotional intelligence, maladaptive perfectionism, perceived social support, depressive symptoms, marital satisfaction, and life satisfaction. PBA-PL also predicted both parental neglect and parental violence beyond socio-demographic factors, depression, and job burnout.

The changing of the political and economic systems in Poland ushered in changes in the education system, including special education. After many years of segregation and social exclusion of children with disabilities, ideas of autonomy, normalization, and integration initiated the building of a modern system of education of children and youth. Currently this is the most important challenge for the government, education authorities, and especially teachers themselves. This article describes the historical contexts of special education in Poland and the current model of the special education based on specific legal assumptions.

A child's disability is a risk factor for its parents experiencing parental burnout (PB). Here we investigate this problem in hearing mothers of deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) children. We look at the psychological dimension of the mothers' personality in terms of the Big Five model, satisfaction with life (SWL), and posttraumatic growth (PTG). Eie study takes account of the sociodemographics of the mothers and their children and other factors related to the child's deafness and their type of hearing assistance. Eie study was conducted through letters sent to 559 hearing mothers of which 29% responded. Responding mothers completed several questionnaires: the Parental Burnout Measure (PBM-12), International Personality Item Pool-Big Five Markers-20 (IPIP-BFM-20), Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI), and a general questionnaire. A VAS scale was used to assess SWL and satisfaction with the child's rehabilitation. Results showed that the level of PB the mothers experienced was significantly lower than in mothers of children with non-deafness disabilities. SWL and emotional stability, intellect/imagination, agreeableness, extraversion, and satisfaction with the child's rehabilitation were inversely correlated with PB, but only SWL and emotional stability were significant PB predictors. PTG in the mothers was at an average level and not correlated with PB. Similarly, the sociodemographic characteristics of mother and child and child's deafness -related factors were not correlated with PB. Low levels of emotional stability and SWL are associated with vulnerability of the mothers to PB. Our finding of a lack of relationship between PB and PTG suggest that some mothers of deaf children may experience "illusory PTG", which is related to avoidance -oriented coping strategies including denial coping.
