Lung cancer and cachexia are the leading causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Cachexia is manifested by weight loss and white adipose tissue (WAT) atrophy. Limited nutritional supplements are conducive to lung cancer patients, whereas the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. In this study, we used a murine cancer cachexia model to investigate the effects of a nutritional formula (NuF) rich in fish oil and selenium yeast as an adjuvant to enhance the drug efficacy of an EGFR inhibitor (Tarceva). In contrast to the healthy control, tumor-bearing mice exhibited severe cachexia symptoms, including tissue wasting, hypoalbuminemia, and a lower food efficiency ratio. Experimentally, Tarceva reduced pEGFR and HIF-1α expression. NuF decreased the expression of pEGFR and HIF-2α, suggesting that Tarceva and NuF act differently in prohibiting tumor growth and subsequent metastasis. NuF blocked LLC tumor-induced PTHrP and expression of thermogenic factor UCP1 and lipolytic enzymes (ATGL and HSL) in WAT. NuF attenuated tumor progression, inhibited PTHrP-induced adipose tissue browning, and maintained adipose tissue integrity by modulating heat shock protein (HSP) 72. Selenium yeast is the most widely available and ideal organic selenium supplement for livestock and poultry production, with a variety of biological functions such as antioxidant, immune boosting, anti-cancer and liver protection. Recent studies have shown that selenium yeast can improve the intestinal antioxidant capacity, maintain the integrity of the intestinal barrier and regulate the immune response. This paper focuses on a review of selenium yeast in the regulation of animal intestinal health and its application in pig production, with the aim of providing a reference for basic research on selenium yeast in the improvement of animal intestinal health and the application of selenium-enriched pork in production. Donkey milk is a traditional medicinal food with various biological activities. However, its production is very low, and lactating donkeys often experience oxidative stress, leading to a further decline in milk yield. In this study, we supplemented the diets of lactating donkeys with yeast selenium (SY) to investigate its effects on lactation performance, antioxidant status, and immune responses, and we expected to determine the optimum additive level of SY in the diet. For this study, 28 healthy lactating Dezhou donkeys with days in milk (DIM, 39.93 ± 7.02 d), estimated milk yield (EMY, 3.60 ± 0.84 kg/d), and parity (2.82 ± 0.48) were selected and randomly divided into 4 groups of 7 donkeys in each: Group SY-0 (control), Group SY-0.15, Group SY-0.3, and Group SY-0.5, with selenium supplementation of 0, 0.15, 0.3, and 0.5 mg of Se/kg DM (in form of SY) to the basal diet, respectively. The results showed a dose-dependent increase in milk yield, milk component yield, milk protein production efficiency, milk production efficiency, the activities of glutathione peroxidases (GSH-Px), catalase (CAT), and total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), as well as the content of serum interleukin-10 (IL-10), white blood cells (WBC), lymphocytes (LYM), red blood cells (RBC), hematocrit, plasma selenium, and milk selenium. Conversely, it presented a dose-dependent decrease in the activity of nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and the contents of malondialdehyde (MDA), reactive oxygen species (ROS), nitric oxide (NO), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and interferon-γ (IFN-γ). Simple Summary: The quality and yield of cashmere in cashmere goats are intricately linked to the morphogenesis and development of secondary hair follicles. The development of secondary hair follicles commences during the embryonic phase and is completed postnatally. Selenium can promote hair follicle development in cashmere goats, but this requires further confirmation. Our investigation revealed that maternal dietary selenium supplementation in gestation could enhance the antioxidant capacity of offspring kids, facilitate the progression of secondary hair follicle development, and subsequently improve the quality and yield of cashmere. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of maternal dietary selenium yeast (SY) supplementation during pregnancy on the hair follicle development of kids. Sixty pregnant Hanshan white cashmere goats were randomly divided into the con group (fed with a basal diet) and the SY group (fed with a basal diet with 0.4 mg/kg SY). SY was supplemented during the pregnancy until the birth of the kids. The growth performance, cashmere performance, hair follicle characteristics, and serum antioxidant capacity of the kids were periodically determined. The results showed that the birth weight of the kids in the SY group was significantly higher than that in the con group (p < 0.05), and the average weight at 15 days, 1 month, 3 months, and 5 months of age increased by 13.60%, 8.77%, 8.86%, and 3.90%, respectively (p > 0.05). The cashmere fineness at early birth was dramatically reduced with SY supplementation (p < 0.001), whereas cashmere length and production were significantly increased at 5 months of age (p < 0.05). Histology assays indicated that the primary hair follicles were fully developed at birth, and there was no significant difference in the number of primary hair follicles between the two groups (p > 0.05). The number of secondary hair follicles and the number and density of active secondary hair follicles in the SY group at 15 days were significantly higher than those in the con group (p < 0.05) and were increased by 11.18%, 6.18%, and 22.55% at 5 months of age, respectively (p > 0.05). The serum antioxidant capacity analysis revealed that the SY group had higher levels of T-AOC, SOD, CAT, and GSH-Px activities and lower levels of MDA (p > 0.05). These results reveal that the maternal dietary supplementation of SY in gestation can promote the morphogenesis and maturation of secondary hair follicles and increase the number and density of secondary hair follicles by enhancing the body's antioxidant capacity, contributing to the improvement of cashmere quality and yield. This study aims to investigate the impact of dietary supplementation with selenium yeast (SeY) and glycerol monolaurate (GML) on the transfer of antioxidative capacity between the mother and fetus during pregnancy and its underlying mechanisms. A total of 160 sows with similar body weight and parity of 3–6 parity sows were randomly and uniformly allocated to four groups (n = 40) as follows: CON group, SeY group, GML group, and SG (SeY + GML) group. Animal feeding started from the 85th day of gestation and continued to the day of delivery. The supplementation of SeY and GML resulted in increased placental weight and reduced lipopolysaccharide (LPS) levels in sow plasma, placental tissues, and piglet plasma. Furthermore, the redox balance and inflammatory markers exhibited significant improvements in the plasma of sows fed with either SeY or GML, as well as in their offspring. Moreover, the addition of SeY and GML activated the Nrf2 signaling pathway, while downregulating the expression of pro-inflammatory genes and proteins associated with inflammatory pathways (MAPK and NF-κB). Vascular angiogenesis and nutrient transportation (amino acids, fatty acids, and glucose) were upregulated, whereas apoptosis signaling pathways within the placenta were downregulated with the supplementation of SeY and GML. The integrity of the intestinal and placental barriers significantly improved, as indicated by the increased expression of ZO-1, occludin, and claudin-1, along with reduced levels of DLA and DAO with dietary treatment. Moreover, supplementation of SeY and GML increased the abundance of Christensenellaceae_R-7_group, Clostridium_sensus_stricto_1, and Bacteroidota, while decreasing levels of gut microbiota metabolites LPS and trimethylamine N-oxide. Correlation analysis demonstrated a significant negative relationship between plasma LPS levels and placental weight, oxidative stress, and inflammation. In summary, dietary supplementation of SeY and GML enhanced the transfer of antioxidative capacity between maternal-fetal during pregnancy via gut–placenta axis through modulating sow microbiota composition. ABSTRACT: The effects of sodium selenite or selenium yeast on the meat quality of broilers were searched in the literature published in the Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang Database, China Science and Technology Journal Database (VIP), PubMed, Web of Science, and Science Direct databases from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2022. Meta-analysis was performed with Stata software (StataCorp. 2011), and the standardized mean difference (SMD) and its 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated using a random effects model. Twenty of the identified 846 literature sources, which included 791 broilers, were screened. The meat quality indices considered were shear force, drip loss, cooking loss, water holding capacity (WHC), pH, and color. The source of heterogeneity was studied using sensitivity and subgroup analyses, and publication bias was evaluated using funnel plots. The results showed that the supplementation of selenium in the broiler diet significantly reduced the shear force (SMD = −0.67, 95% CI [−1.12, −0.22], P < 0.05) and drip loss (SMD = −0.84, 95% CI [−1.39, −0.30], P < 0.05) and increased the pH (SMD = 0.38, 95% CI [0.01, 0.75], P < 0.05) of broiler breast muscle; however, it had no significant effects on other indices. Funnel plots revealed a slight publication bias in the shear force and pH of breast muscle but none in the drip loss of breast muscle. The sensitivity analysis showed that the results were stable and reliable. In conclusion, selenium supplementation in broiler feed can improve some indices of broiler meat quality, and its inclusion in broiler diets is recommended, in conjunction with other minerals, which is of great significance to improve the quality, preservation time and economic benefits of chicken products.

The experiment was to screen differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the livers of broilers supplemented with selenium yeast, to investigate the molecular mechanisms by which selenium yeast affects the growth, development, and health of broilers. The study obtained gene expression profile data from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) and conducted bioinformatics mining. The results showed that 600 DEGs related to selenium yeast were identified. These DEGs were subjected to Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) annotation using DAVID software, leading to the significant enrichment of 18 biological processes and 12 KEGG pathways. A proteinprotein interaction network (PPI) was constructed using the STRING database, which included 546 nodes and 905 edges. Using Cytoscape software, six hub genes (FN1, PLCG1, MYO3 A, ITGA8, KDM6 A, and ATP2 B2) and four gene modules were identified. The study suggests that these six hub genes, along with the pathways related to the adrenergic signaling in the cardiomyocytes, calcium signaling, homologous recombination, focal adhesion, and eukaryotic ribosome biogenesis in myocardial cells, may be the key genes and key pathways through which selenium yeast influences the growth, development, and health of broilers. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this was study was to analyze the effect of selenium yeast in the prevention of adverse reactions related to platinum-based combination therapy in patients with malignant tumors. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 86 patients with malignant tumors treated in Anhui No. 2 Provincial People's Hospital were randomized to receive either platinum-containing combined regimen with selenium yeast at a dose of 200 ug daily (observation group) or platinum-containing combined regimen without selenium yeast (control group), with 43 cases in each group. RESULTS: The platinum-containing combined regimen exhibited similar total effectiveness either with (25.58%) or without selenium yeast (23.26%) (p>0.05). Patients with selenium yeast treatment after chemotherapy had better appetites and more stable body weights than those without selenium yeast (p<0.05). The platinum-containing combined regimen significantly improved the quality of life of the patients, as evidenced by the elevated Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS) scores of the two groups, and selenium yeast treatment potentiated this improvement (p<0.05). Selenium yeast treatment significantly reduced the incidence of adverse reactions in patients after chemotherapy by 23.26% (p<0.05), and patients also experienced milder adverse reactions after selenium yeast administration (Z=-2.438, p=0.015). Chemotherapy with selenium yeast treatment provided better pain mitigation for patients vs. without selenium yeast administration (Z=0.854, p=0.041 <0.05). CONCLUSIONS: In the clinical treatment of patients with malignant tumors, a 200 ug dose of selenium yeast significantly reduced the adverse reactions related to chemotherapy, improved the patient's post-chemotherapy appetite, prevented weight loss, and provided significant pain mitigation. Therefore, selenium yeast may offer a viable alternative for the management of cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy to enhance treatment effectiveness and reduce adverse events in clinical practice. Mycotoxins are secondary metabolites produced by specific fungi. More than 400 different mycotoxins are known in the world, and the concentration of these toxins in food and feed often exceeds the acceptable limit, thus causing serious harm to animals and human body. At the same time, modern industrial agriculture will also bring a lot of environmental pollution in the development process, including the increase of heavy metal content, and often the clinical symptoms of low/medium level chronic heavy metal poisoning are not obvious, thus delaying the best treatment opportunity. However, the traditional ways of detoxification cannot completely eliminate the adverse effects of these toxins on the body, and sometimes bring some side effects, so it is essential to find a new type of safe antidote. Trace element selenium is among the essential mineral nutrient elements of human and animal bodies, which can effectively remove excessive free radicals and reactive oxygen species in the body, and has the effects of antioxidant, resisting stress, and improving body immunity. Selenium is common in nature in inorganic selenium and organic selenium. In previous studies, it was found that the use of inorganic selenium (sodium selenite) can play a certain protective role against mycotoxins and heavy metal poisoning. However, while it plays the role of antioxidant, it will also have adverse effects on the body. Therefore, it was found in the latest study that selenium yeast could not only replace the protective effect of sodium selenite on mycotoxins and heavy metal poisoning, but also improve the immunity of the body. Selenium yeast is an organic selenium source with high activity and low toxicity, which is produced by selenium relying on the cell protein structure of growing yeast. It not only has high absorption rate, but also can be stored in the body after meeting the physiological needs of the body for selenium, so as to avoid selenium deficiency again in the short term. However, few of these studies can clearly reveal the protective mechanism of yeast selenium. In this paper, the detoxification mechanism of selenium yeast on mycotoxins and heavy metal poisoning was reviewed, which provided some theoretical support for further understanding of the biological function of selenium yeast and its replacement for inorganic selenium. The conclusions suggest that selenium yeast can effectively alleviate the oxidative damage by regulating different signaling pathways, improving the activity of antioxidant enzymes, reversing the content of inflammatory factors, regulating the protein expression of apoptosis-related genes, and reducing the accumulation of mycotoxins and heavy metals in the body. ABSTRACT: In this study, we aimed to determine the amount of Se transferred to milk and blood of mid- to late-lactation dairy cows when supplemental Se from hydroxy-selenomethionine (OH-SeMet) was fed compared with an unsupplemented group and a group supplemented with a seleno-yeast (SY). Twenty-four lactating Holstein cows (178 ± 43 d in milk) were used in a complete randomized block design for 91 d (7-d covariate period and 84-d treatment period). Treatments were (1) basal diet with an analyzed Se background of 0.2 mg of Se per kg as-fed (control); (2) basal diet + 0.3 mg of Se/kg as-fed from SY (SY-0.3); (3) basal diet + 0.1 mg of Se/kg as-fed from OH-SeMet (OH-SeMet-0.1); and (4) basal diet + 0.3 mg of Se/kg as-fed from OH-SeMet (OH-SeMet-0.3). During the trial, plasma and milk were analyzed for total Se, and plasma was analyzed for glutathione peroxidase activity. The mean plasma and milk Se concentrations exhibited the same relationship, where OH-SeMet-0.3 resulted in the highest values (142 µg/L of plasma and 104 µg/kg of milk), followed by SY-0.3 (134 µg/L and 85 µg/kg), OH-SeMet-0.1 (122 µg/L and 67 µg/kg), and the control group had the lowest values (120 µg/L and 50 µg/kg). The increment of Se in milk induced by OH-SeMet-0.3 (+54 µg/kg) was 54% higher than that induced by SY-0.3 (+35 µg/kg). Additionally, dietary supplementation of 0.2 mg/kg Se from OH-SeMet in the total mixed ration was estimated to be similar to 0.3 mg/kg Se from SY in the total mixed ration when considering the level of Se in the milk. There was no difference in plasma glutathione peroxidase activity between groups; however, OH-SeMet-0.3 significantly decreased somatic cell count. The results confirmed that supplementation with organic Se increases milk and plasma Se concentrations. Moreover, when administered at the same level of supplementation, OH-SeMet was shown to be more efficient than SY in improving milk quality by increasing Se content and decreasing milk somatic cell count.

Simple Summary: Fatty liver syndrome (FLS) in laying hens has brought serious economic losses to the poultry industry. Therefore, research on feed additives to alleviate FLS is necessary. This study investigated the effects of methyl sulfonyl methane (MSM) and selenium yeast (Se-Y) in the diet of laying hens on production performance, liver steatosis, and antioxidant index and explored the biological mechanisms of MSM and Se-Y to alleviate FLS via RNA-seq technology. The results provide a reference for the prevention and treatment of FLS in laying hens during the late peak laying period. The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of MSM and Se-Y on FLS in laying hens during the late peak laying period and the underlying biological mechanisms. Therefore 240 55-week-old Jing-fen No. 6 laying hens were randomly divided into five groups, with eight replicates in each group and six laying hens in each replicate. The hens were fed a basal diet (Control) and diets supplemented with 350 and 700 mg/kg MSM and 25 and 50 mg/kg Se-Y, respectively, for four weeks. The results showed that MSM and Se-Y had no significant effects on the performance of laying hens. With the increasing dosage of MSM and Se-Y, the symptoms of liver steatosis in laying hens were reduced, and MSM and Se-Y could significantly reduce the content of malondialdehyde (MDA) in serum and liver (p < 0.05) and increase the contents of total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) in serum and liver (p < 0.05). The RNA-seq results showed that 700 mg/kg MSM significantly downregulated the expression levels of the ATP5I, ATP5G1, CYCS, and UQCRQ genes in the liver, and 50 mg/kg Se-Y significantly downregulated the expression levels of MAPK10, SRC, BMP2, and FGF9 genes in the liver. In conclusion, dietary supplementation with MSM and Se-Y can effectively reduce the FLS of laying hens in the late peak laying period and increase their antioxidant capacity. Conversely, it presented a dose-dependent decrease in the activity of nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and the contents of malondialdehyde (MDA), reactive oxygen species (ROS), nitric oxide (NO), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and interferon-γ (IFN-γ). In conclusion, the results confirmed that dietary supplementation with SY can improve lactation performance, antioxidant status, and immune responses in lactating donkeys, and the recommended dose of SY was 0.3 mg/kg.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of maternal dietary selenium yeast (SY) supplementation during pregnancy on the hair follicle development of kids. Sixty pregnant Hanshan white cashmere goats were randomly divided into the con group (fed with a basal diet) and the SY group (fed with a basal diet with 0.4 mg/kg SY). SY was supplemented during the pregnancy until the birth of the kids. The growth performance, cashmere performance, hair follicle characteristics, and serum antioxidant capacity of the kids were periodically determined. The results showed that the birth weight of the kids in the SY group was significantly higher than that in the con group (p < 0.05), and the average weight at 15 days, 1 month, 3 months, and 5 months of age increased by 13.60%, 8.77%, 8.86%, and 3.90%, respectively (p > 0.05). The cashmere fineness at early birth was dramatically reduced with SY supplementation (p < 0.001), whereas cashmere length and production were significantly increased at 5 months of age (p < 0.05). Histology assays indicated that the primary hair follicles were fully developed at birth, and there was no significant difference in the number of primary hair follicles between the two groups (p > 0.05). The number of secondary hair follicles and the number and density of active secondary hair follicles in the SY group at 15 days were significantly higher than those in the con group (p < 0.05) and were increased by 11.18%, 6.18%, and 22.55% at 5 months of age, respectively (p > 0.05). The serum antioxidant capacity analysis revealed that the SY group had higher levels of T-AOC, SOD, CAT, and GSH-Px activities and lower levels of MDA (p > 0.05). These results reveal that the maternal dietary supplementation of SY in gestation can promote the morphogenesis and maturation of secondary hair follicles and increase the number and density of secondary hair follicles by enhancing the body’s antioxidant capacity, contributing to the improvement of cashmere quality and yield.

This study aims to investigate the impact of dietary supplementation with selenium yeast (SeY) and glycerol monolaurate (GML) on the transfer of antioxidative capacity between the mother and fetus during pregnancy and its underlying mechanisms. A total of 160 sows with similar body weight and parity of 3–6 parity sows were randomly and uniformly allocated to four groups (n = 40) as follows: CON group, SeY group, GML group, and SG (SeY + GML) group. Animal feeding started from the 85th day of gestation and continued to the day of delivery. The supplementation of SeY and GML resulted in increased placental weight and reduced lipopolysaccharide (LPS) levels in sow plasma, placental tissues, and piglet plasma. Furthermore, the redox balance and inflammatory markers exhibited significant improvements in the plasma of sows fed with either SeY or GML, as well as in their offspring. Moreover, the addition of SeY and GML activated the Nrf2 signaling pathway, while downregulating the expression of pro-inflammatory genes and proteins associated with inflammatory pathways (MAPK and NF-κB). Vascular angiogenesis and nutrient transportation (amino acids, fatty acids, and glucose) were upregulated, whereas apoptosis signaling pathways within the placenta were downregulated with the supplementation of SeY and GML. The integrity of the intestinal and placental barriers significantly improved, as indicated by the increased expression of ZO-1, occludin, and claudin-1, along with reduced levels of DLA and DAO with dietary treatment. Moreover, supplementation of SeY and GML increased the abundance of Christensenellaceae_R-7_group, Clostridium_sensus_stricto_1, and Bacteroidota, while decreasing levels of gut microbiota metabolites LPS and trimethylamine N-oxide. Correlation analysis demonstrated a significant negative relationship between plasma LPS levels and placental weight, oxidative stress, and inflammation. In summary, dietary supplementation of SeY and GML enhanced the transfer of antioxidative capacity between maternal-fetal during pregnancy via gut–placenta axis through modulating sow microbiota composition.

This study investigated the effects of vitamin E and selenium yeast on the cognitive performance of pups whose dams were subjected to prenatal noise stress (PNS). Twenty-five pregnant Wistar rats were divided into five groups, group 1 (negative control; received 1 mL/kg of distilled water without noise stress (NS); group 2: (positive control), received 1 mL/kg of distilled water group 3: received vitamin E; 100 mg/kg/day group 4: selenium yeast (0.4 mg/kg/day) and group 5: vitamin E (100 mg/kg/day bw) and selenium yeast (0.4 mg/kg/day). All administrations were done 30 min before the induction of white noise at 100 dB/4 h (0900–1300 h) /day for 15 days. On gestational day 21, five pups (n = 5) were randomly selected from each group. The pups were subjected to cognitive tests using the Y-maze apparatus on days 21 and 22. All experimental animals were sacrificed on day 23 for tissue processing. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and a value of p˂0.05 was considered statistically significant. The serum corticosterone (CORT) levels statistically increased in group 2 (p˂0.001) compared with groups 1, 3, 4 and 5. Brain homogenate showed an increased level of Malondialdehyde (MDA), decreased levels of glutathione reeducates (Gpx), catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) in group 2 compared to 1. Glial cell activation was prominient in group 2 compared to group 1. Prenatal noise stress-induced cognitive impairments in pups whose dams were exposed to NS, but this impairment was mitigated with the administration of vitamin E, selenium yeast and combined administration of selenium yeast and vitamin E.

The present study investigated the impact of dietary supplementation with nano-elemental, inorganic, and organic selenium (Se) on the Se content, fatty acid (FA) composition, and oxidative stability of meat in 150 one-day-old broiler chickens. The broiler chickens were allotted into three groups: control (C), SS+SY, and SeNP. The C group received a control diet without any added Se, while the SS+SY and SeNP groups were fed diets containing 0.4 mg Se/kg from a combination of sodium selenite and selenium yeast (SS+SY at a 1:1 ratio) or elemental Se nanoparticles (SeNP), respectively. Breast meat samples were collected from 10 broiler chickens per diet group (2 per replicate) at 42 days of age for the analysis of Se content, FA composition, and oxidative stability. The findings of the study revealed that the Se levels in the breast tissue significantly increased (p < 0.05) and the concentrations of malondialdehyde (MDA), a marker of oxidative stress, decreased (p < 0.05) with the inclusion of SS+SY and SeNP in the diet. Furthermore, the levels of 22:6n − 3 (docosahexaenoic acid) and total n − 3 FA significantly increased (p < 0.05) in the breast meat of broiler chickens supplemented with SeNP compared to the C and SS+SY groups. In conclusion, both dietary supplementation with SeNP and SS+SY had a positive impact on the Se content and oxidative stability of the breast meat. However, SeNP supplementation resulted in a more desirable modification of the FA composition. In this study, we aimed to determine the amount of Se transferred to milk and blood of mid- to late-lactation dairy cows when supplemental Se from hydroxy-selenomethionine (OH-SeMet) was fed compared with an unsupplemented group and a group supplemented with a seleno-yeast (SY). Twenty-four lactating Holstein cows (178 ± 43 d in milk) were used in a complete randomized block design for 91 d (7-d covariate period and 84-d treatment period). Treatments were (1) basal diet with an analyzed Se background of 0.2 mg of Se per kg as-fed (control); (2) basal diet + 0.3 mg of Se/kg as-fed from SY (SY-0.3); (3) basal diet + 0.1 mg of Se/kg as-fed from OH-SeMet (OH-SeMet-0.1); and (4) basal diet + 0.3 mg of Se/kg as-fed from OH-SeMet (OH-SeMet-0.3). During the trial, plasma and milk were analyzed for total Se, and plasma was analyzed for glutathione peroxidase activity. The mean plasma and milk Se concentrations exhibited the same relationship, where OH-SeMet-0.3 resulted in the highest values (142 µg/L of plasma and 104 µg/kg of milk), followed by SY-0.3 (134 µg/L and 85 µg/kg), OH-SeMet-0.1 (122 µg/L and 67 µg/kg), and the control group had the lowest values (120 µg/L and 50 µg/kg). The increment of Se in milk induced by OH-SeMet-0.3 (+54 µg/kg) was 54% higher than that induced by SY-0.3 (+35 µg/kg). Additionally, dietary supplementation of 0.2 mg/kg Se from OH-SeMet in the total mixed ration was estimated to be similar to 0.3 mg/kg Se from SY in the total mixed ration when considering the level of Se in the milk. There was no difference in plasma glutathione peroxidase activity between groups; however, OH-SeMet-0.3 significantly decreased somatic cell count. The results confirmed that supplementation with organic Se increases milk and plasma Se concentrations. Moreover, when administered at the same level of supplementation, OH-SeMet was shown to be more efficient than SY in improving milk quality by increasing Se content and decreasing milk somatic cell count. Simple Summary: The depression of egg quality during the late stage of the laying cycle is one of the knotty issues in the poultry industry, which cause a great economic loss. Our study revealed that 0.45 mg/kg selenium yeast supplementation can alleviate the decline of egg quality in aged laying hens. After Se depletion, the hens were randomly divided into seven treatments, which included an SD diet, and dietary supplementation of SY and sodium selenite (SS) at 0.15, 0.30, and 0.45 mg/kg to investigate the effect on egg quality, plasma antioxidant capacity, and selenium content in reproductive organs. This study was performed to investigate the effects of selenium yeast (Se-yeast) on the growth, intestinal health, immune status and body composition of juvenile Apostichopus japonicus before and after aestivation. Five experimental diets were formulated with increasing addition of Se-yeast (0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 mg/kg), with the diet without Se-yeast as the control. Each diet was randomly assigned to three tanks of juvenile A. japonicus (initial body weight: 2.96 ± 0.04 g). The whole experiment lasted for 135 days, which included a 45-day feeding experiment before aestivation, a 60-day aestivation phage and a 30-day feeding experiment after aestivation. The results showed that weight gain rate (WGR) was significantly increased by the increasing addition of Se-yeast before aestivation. After aestivation, WGR was markedly elevated by 1.0 mg/kg Se-yeast but was inhibited by 1.5–2.0 mg/kg Se-yeast. The evisceration rate (ER) of A. japonicus was obviously inhibited by the relatively higher addition level of Se-yeast (1.5–2.0 mg/kg) before aestivation. After aestivation, the ER was significantly inhibited by Se-yeast at an addition of 1.5 mg/kg. Before aestivation, the highest activities of all digestive enzymes were obtained by Se-yeast addition at a level equal to or above 1.0 mg/kg Se-yeast. After aestivation, the activities of most digestive enzymes were maximized by Se-yeast at the addition level of no more than 1.0 mg/kg. Before aestivation, the activities of nitric oxide synthase and alkaline phosphatase significantly increased by the increasing addition of Se-yeast. After aestivation, immune related parameters exhibited the highest or comparable values when the addition level of Se-yeast was equal to or less than 1.0 mg/kg. Notably, the selenium content in the body wall of A. japonicus increased significantly as Se-yeast addition increased in the diets. These results showed that Se-yeast at the addition level of 1.5–2.0 mg/kg before aestivation and 1.0–1.5 mg/kg after aestivation was beneficial for the promotion of growth, intestinal health and immune status of juvenile A. japonicus. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of selenium yeast on the growth, histomorphology, antioxidant capacity and apoptosis of largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoide). The five iso-nitrogen and iso-lipid feeds were supplemented with selenium yeast levels of 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 mg/kg, respectively. Abstract Background Pesticide exposure is thought to be a major contributor to living organism health deterioration, as evidenced by its impact on both cultured fish species and human health. Commercial fish diets are typically deficient in selenium (Se); hence, supplementation may be necessary to meet requirements during stress. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the protective role of selenium yeast (SY) supplementation for 60 days against the deleterious effects of glyphosate and or malathion chronic toxicity at sublethal concentrations in Oreochromis niloticus . Methods Two hundred and ten fish were divided into seven groups (n = 30/group) as follows: G1 (negative control); G2 (2 mg L− 1 glyphosate); G3 (0.5 mg L− 1 malathion); G4 (glyphosate 1.6 mg L− 1 and malathion 0.3 mg L− 1); G5 (glyphosate 2 mg L− 1 and SY 3.3 mg kg− 1); G6 (malathion 0.5 mg L− 1 and SY 3.3 mg kg− 1); and G7 (glyphosate 1.6 mg L− 1; malathion 0.3 mg L− 1 and SY 3.3 mg kg− 1). Results Results revealed significant alteration in growth performance parameters including feed intake (FI), body weight (BW), body weight gain (BWG), specific growth rate (SGR), feed conversion ratio (FCR), and protein efficiency ratio (PER). G4 has the highest documented cumulative mortalities (40%), followed by G3 (30%). Additionally, the greatest impact was documented in G4, followed by G3 and then G2 as severe anemia with significant thrombocytopenia; leukocytosis; hypoproteinemia; increased Alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and Aspartate aminotransferase (AST), urea, and creatinine, as well as malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx). Considering the previously mentioned parameters, selenium yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) (3.3 mg kg− 1 available selenium) mitigated the negative impact of both the agrochemicals, whether exposed singly or in combination, in addition to their antioxidative action. Conclusions In conclusion, our study found that organophosphorus agrochemicals, single or combined, had negative impacts on Oreochromis niloticus regarding growth performance, biochemical and hematological changes in the serum, as well as induced oxidative damage in liver and kidney tissues. Supplementation of SY at the rate of 3.3 mg kg− 1 diet (2.36 mg kg− 1 selenomethionine and 0.94 mg organic selenium) ameliorated the fish performance and health status adversely affected by organophosphorus agrochemical intoxication.

Objective An experiment was conducted to determine the effect of algae-based antioxidant containing Se yeast (EconomasE®) on the growth performance, visceral organ weight, meat quality, and oxidative stability of broiler chickens. Methods Nine hundred sixty, day-old male broiler chickens (Cobb, 43.97±0.55 g) were divided into three dietary treatments and allocated into 12 deep litter pens in a completely randomized design giving 4 replicate cages for each treatment. Hence, our study was endeavored to illustrate the mitigating efficacy of SeY on Cu-induced hepatic and renal damage. Cobb chicks aged 1 day were allocated into four experimental groups and offered a basal diet, SeY (0.5 mg/kg), CuSO4 (300 mg/kg), or SeY plus CuSO4 in their diets for 42 days. Our results revealed that SeY supplement antagonized significantly the Cu accumulation in livers and kidneys of exposed birds. Marked declines were also detected in the AST, ALT, urea, and creatinine levels, besides marked increases in total protein, glycerides, and cholesterol in the SeY-supplemented group. Moreover, enhancement of cellular antioxidant biomarkers (superoxide dismutase, CAT, GPx, and GSH) along with lowered MDA contents were achieved by SeY in hepatic and renal tissues. Further, SeY exerted a noteworthy anti-inflammatory action as indicated by decreased inflammatory biomarkers (IL-1β and TNF-α) and NO levels in both organs. The need to increase the commercialization and popularity of guinea fowl and better exploit their higher nutritional value compared to other poultry species has necessitated the search for feed additives that will enhance their egg laying potential. A 70 d study was carried out to investigate the laying response and egg quality attributes of guinea fowl fed diets containing vitamin E (vit. E) and selenium (Se) yeast with or without L-arginine (L-arg). A total of 240 helmeted guinea hens at the age of 20 weeks (average weight 2,11 ± 0,02 kg) were allotted to 8 dietary treatments. Each treatment was replicated three times, with 10 birds per replicate, in a completely randomized design. The dietary treatments were arranged in a 4 × 2 factorial system, with four combinations of additives, i.e. (1) no additive, (2) Se yeast (0,3 mg/kg), (3) vit. E (30 IU/kg), and (4) Se yeast + vit. E) and two variants of arginine supplementation: (1) no additive or (2) 1 g L-arg/kg of feed. Laying performance and egg quality were analysed by two-way ANOVA using a general linear model. Supplementation with L-arg improved (P < 0,05) the number of eggs collected per day (19,73 eggs) and daily production (65,76%) compared with the diet without L-arg supplementation (17.68 eggs, 58,90%, respectively). Birds fed a diet supplemented with vit. E + Se yeast had the highest number of eggs collected per day (19,40 eggs) compared to all other groups (P <0,05). Also, birds fed various additives had higher (P < 0,05) hen-day production (63,33%) compared with those fed the control diet. Birds fed the diet containing vit. E + Se yeast supplemented with L-arg had the highest (P < 0,05) total number of eggs collected per day (21,00 eggs) and hen-day production (70%). Supplementation with all tested additives had a significant effect (P < 0,05) on yolk weight (8,06- 12,53 g), yolk height (10,49-16,73 mm), yolk percentage (24,62-35,17%) and albumen weight (14,04-17,06 g). Supplementation with all tested additives led to an increase in the number of eggs produced per day. It was concluded that the inclusion of vit. E and Se yeast supplemented with Larg enhanced the laying performance and egg quality attributes of guinea fowl. The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of MSM and Se-Y on FLS in laying hens during the late peak laying period and the underlying biological mechanisms. Therefore 240 55-week-old Jing-fen No. 6 laying hens were randomly divided into five groups, with eight replicates in each group and six laying hens in each replicate. The hens were fed a basal diet (Control) and diets supplemented with 350 and 700 mg/kg MSM and 25 and 50 mg/kg Se-Y, respectively, for four weeks. The results showed that MSM and Se-Y had no significant effects on the performance of laying hens. With the increasing dosage of MSM and Se-Y, the symptoms of liver steatosis in laying hens were reduced, and MSM and Se-Y could significantly reduce the content of malondialdehyde (MDA) in serum and liver (p < 0.05) and increase the contents of total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) in serum and liver (p < 0.05). The RNA-seq results showed that 700 mg/kg MSM significantly downregulated the expression levels of the ATP5I, ATP5G1, CYCS, and UQCRQ genes in the liver, and 50 mg/kg Se-Y significantly downregulated the expression levels of MAPK10, SRC, BMP2, and FGF9 genes in the liver. In conclusion, dietary supplementation with MSM and Se-Y can effectively reduce the FLS of laying hens in the late peak laying period and increase their antioxidant capacity. The underlying biological mechanism may be related to the downregulation of genes involved in liver oxidative phosphorylation and inflammation-related pathways.

Moreover, enhancement of cellular antioxidant biomarkers (superoxide dismutase, CAT, GPx, and GSH) along with lowered MDA contents were achieved by SeY in hepatic and renal tissues. Further, SeY exerted a noteworthy anti-inflammatory action as indicated by decreased inflammatory biomarkers (IL-1β and TNF-α) and NO levels in both organs. Noticeable histopathological alterations of both organs further validated the changes in the markers mentioned above. To sum up, our findings indicate that SeY can be considered a potential feed supplement for alleviating Cu-induced hepatic and renal damage in broilers, possibly via activation of antioxidant molecules and lessening the inflammatory stress.

ABSTRACT: The main objective of this study was to explore the effects of dietary selenium yeast and jujube powder on mitochondrial oxidative damage and cell apoptosis of broilers during postmortem aging, chicken breasts of broilers fed diets supplemented with different concentrations of selenium yeast and jujube powder were used as research subjects. With the prolongation of postmortem aging time, the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), carbonyl content, mitochondrial permeability transition pore (MPTP) openness, and mitochondrial membrane permeability increased significantly (P < 0.05). The contents of the sulfhydryl, mitochondrial membrane potential, shear force, and cytochrome C (Cyt-c) reduction level decreased significantly (P < 0.05). The activity of Caspase-3 and Caspase-9 increased from 0 to 24 h postmortem but fell from 24 to 72 h postmortem. Compared with the control group, dietary selenium yeast and jujube powder significantly reduced mitochondrial oxidative damage. They greatly increased the shear force, mitochondrial membrane potential, and Cyt-c reduction levels (P < 0.05). Among them, the combination group of high-dose selenium yeast and jujube powder had more significant effects on ROS scavenging, reducing cell membrane permeability, protecting cell membrane integrity, and increasing Cyt-c reduction level (P < 0.05). In conclusion, cell apoptosis intensifies during the chicken breast's aging time, and muscle tenderness continues. Still, different doses of dietary selenium yeast and jujube powder can inhibit mitochondrial oxidation to various degrees. The combined group of selenium yeast and jujube powder with 0.6 mg·kg−1 has the best effect. This study is of great significance for applying natural antioxidant ingredients such as selenium yeast and jujube powder in the development and utilization of poultry feed.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of selenium yeast and jujube powder on the structure and functional properties of post-mortem myofibrillar protein (MP) in white feather broilers. Changes in the structure (surface hydrophobicity, secondary structure, and tertiary structure), functional properties (solubility, turbidity, emulsifying, and foaming characteristics), and gel properties (gel strength, springiness, and water-holding capacity) of the MPs of white feather broiler, which were fed with different concentrations of selenium yeast or/and jujube powder (selenium yeast: 0,0.3, and 0.6 mg/kg; jujube powder: 8% to replace corn) for 42 days, were determined at 0, 24, and 72 h post-mortem. The results showed that with increasing concentrations of selenium yeast and jujube powder in the diet, the α-helix content, solubility, emulsification, and foaming of post-mortem chicken MP increased significantly (P < 0.05). The gel strength, springiness, and water-holding capacity of MP also increased, but the differences between the treatment groups were not significant (P > 0.05). In addition, the β-folding content and turbidity of MP decreased significantly (P < 0.05). Both the increase in selenium yeast levels and the addition of jujube powder improved the structural integrity and functional properties of MP. The best improvement effect was found in the combination group of high-dose selenium yeast and jujube powder, and there were significant interactions between them in the indices of α-helix, β-folding, turbidity, emulsification, and foam stability of MP. In conclusion, supplementing diets with seleniumyeast and jujube powder could maintain the structural stability of MPs in post-mortem chicken breast, leading to good functional properties. The results of this study may provide new insights into the effects of pre-slaughter feeding on post-mortem muscle MP conformation control and quality improvement.

Selenium(Se) is a biological essential trace element that affects the growth and health of fish. The present study aimed to explore the dietary Se requirement of triploid rainbow trout using Se-yeast supplement. The levels of Se added to the basal diet were 0(Se0), 0.1(Se0.1), 0.3(Se0.3), 0.5(Se0.5), 1.0(Se1.0), 4.0(Se4.0) and 16.0(Se16.0) mg Se/kg diet respectively. Results showed that the fish fed Se4.0 diet had significantly higher weight gain and lower oxidative stress compared with the fish fed Se16.0 and Se0 diets. The optimal dietary Se requirement of triploid rainbow trout was 3.53 mg/kg based on broken-line regression of growth performance. Dietary Se supplementation significantly increased the expression level of selenoprotein genes both in liver (GPX1a, GPX1b1, GPX1b2, SelK, SelP, SelT1, SelT2, SelWl, TrxR3a, SelU) and in muscle (GPX1a, GPX1b2, SelK, SelP, SelU, SelWl, TrxR3b, SelN, MsrB1Al). The minimum dietary Se level was 2.19 or 1.28 mg/kg when the mRNA level of all these selenoproteins reached a plateau in muscle or liver respectively. In conclusion, based on broken-line regression of growth performance and sigmoidal regression of selenoprotein genes expression in muscle and liver, dietary Se requirement of triploid rainbow trout was 3.53, 2.19 and 1.28 mg/kg respectively. The experiments were to study the effects of Se-yeast on immune and antioxidant in Selenium(Se)-deprived Pishan red sheep in Southern Xinjiang, China. The samples of soil, forage, and animal tissues were collected, and used for measuring mineral content, physiological parameter, and biochemical values. These findings showed that the Se contents in affected soil and forage were markedly lower than those from unaffected soil and forage (P < 0.01). Se in affected blood and wool were also extremely lower than those from healthy Pishan red sheep (P < 0.01). The hemoglobin, packed cell volume, platelet count, Glutathione peroxidase, and total antioxidant capacity in the affected Pishan red sheep were markedly lower than those from healthy ones too (P < 0.01). The levels of malondialdehyde, total nitric oxide synthase, and lipid peroxide in Pishan red sheep from affected pastures were extremely higher than those from healthy ones (P < 0.01). The levels of interleukin (IL)-1β, Interleukin-2, tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-6 from serum were markedly decreased in affected Pishan red sheep(P < 0.01). The Pishan red sheep in Se-deprived pasture were treated by orally with Se-yeast, the amount of Se in the blood markedly increased in treated animals. Meanwhile, the immune and antioxidant indicator was returned to the healthy values. Consequently, our findings were indicated that Se-deprived forage caused oxidative damage, and a serious threat to the immune function in animals. Background: Pesticide exposure is thought to be a major contributor to living organism health deterioration, as evidenced by its impact on both cultured fish species and human health. Commercial fish diets are typically deficient in selenium (Se); hence, supplementation may be necessary to meet requirements during stress. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the protective role of selenium yeast (SY) supplementation for 60 days against the deleterious effects of glyphosate and or malathion chronic toxicity at sublethal concentrations in Oreochromis niloticus. Methods: Two hundred and ten fish were divided into seven groups (n = 30/group) as follows: G1 (negative control); G2 (2 mg L− 1 glyphosate); G3 (0.5 mg L− 1 malathion); G4 (glyphosate 1.6 mg L− 1 and malathion 0.3 mg L− 1); G5 (glyphosate 2 mg L− 1 and SY 3.3 mg kg− 1); G6 (malathion 0.5 mg L− 1 and SY 3.3 mg kg− 1); and G7 (glyphosate 1.6 mg L− 1; malathion 0.3 mg L− 1 and SY 3.3 mg kg− 1). Results: Results revealed significant alteration in growth performance parameters including feed intake (FI), body weight (BW), body weight gain (BWG), specific growth rate (SGR), feed conversion ratio (FCR), and protein efficiency ratio (PER). G4 has the highest documented cumulative mortalities (40%), followed by G3 (30%). Additionally, the greatest impact was documented in G4, followed by G3 and then G2 as severe anemia with significant thrombocytopenia; leukocytosis; hypoproteinemia; increased Alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and Aspartate aminotransferase (AST), urea, and creatinine, as well as malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx). Considering the previously mentioned parameters, selenium yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) (3.3 mg kg− 1 available selenium) mitigated the negative impact of both the agrochemicals, whether exposed singly or in combination, in addition to their antioxidative action. Conclusions: In conclusion, our study found that organophosphorus agrochemicals, single or combined, had negative impacts on Oreochromis niloticus regarding growth performance, biochemical and hematological changes in the serum, as well as induced oxidative damage in liver and kidney tissues. Supplementation of SY at the rate of 3.3 mg kg− 1 diet (2.36 mg kg− 1 selenomethionine and 0.94 mg organic selenium) ameliorated the fish performance and health status adversely affected by organophosphorus agrochemical intoxication. This study evaluated the effects of selenium yeast (SY) on rumen fermentation parameters, rumen bacterial diversity, and expression pathways in goats. A total of 18 Qianbei-pockmarked weather goats from Guizhou (body weight, 25.75 ± 1.75 kg; mean ± standard deviation) were assigned to three groups according to a completely randomized design. Control group (CON, n = 6) kids were fed a basal diet, while treatment 1 (LS, n = 6) and treatment 2 (HS, n = 6) kids were fed a basal diet with 2.4 and 4.8 mg/kg SY, respectively. The feeding trial lasted for 74 days. The results indicated that the ruminal fluid of LS goats had significantly higher levels of propionic, caproic, isobutyric, and isovaleric acids than that of the CON. The levels of butyric and valeric acids were higher in the HS group than in the CON. The acetate:propionate ratio was significantly higher in the CON than in the two treatments. In addition, the inclusion of 2.4 mg/kg SY can lead to a significant decrease in the relative abundances of Euryarchaeota, and Proteobacteria at the phylum level compared to the CON and the HS groups. At the genus level, the LS group had a significant decrease in the relative abundance of Methanobrevibacter and Sarcina, whereas it could lead to a significant increase in the relative abundance of Clostridium in the ruminal fluid relative of the other two groups. At the species level, the LS group had a significant decrease in the relative abundance of bacterium_P3, bacterium_P201, and Sarcina_sp._DSM_11001 compared to the other groups. Moreover, the CON group had a significant decrease in the relative abundance of bacterium_P201 compared to the other two treatments. Compared to the CON, the addition of 2.4 mg/kg SY significantly enriched carbohydrate metabolism pathways in the ruminal fluid for gene encoding. Additionally, goats receiving SY showed a significant upregulation of glycosyl transferase and carbohydrate binding module pathways. These results suggest that dietary supplementation with SY modulates fermentation parameters, and it affects microbial diversity and microbial metagenome in the rumen of Qianbei-pockmarked goats. Deltamethrin (DLM) is a member of pyrethroid pesticide widely applied for agriculture and aquaculture, and its residue in the environment seriously threatens the bio-safety. The cerebrum might be vulnerable to pesticide-triggered oxidative stress. However, there is no specific antidote for treating DLM-triggered cerebral injury. Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element functionally forming selenoprotein glutathione peroxidase (GPX) in antioxidant defense. Se yeast (SY) is a common and effective organic form of Se supplement with high selenomethionine content. Accordingly, this study focused on investigating the therapeutic potential of SY on DLM-induced cerebral injury in quails after chronically exposing to DLM and exploring the underlying mechanisms. Quails were treated with/without SY (0.4 mg kg−1 SY added in standard diet) in the presence/absence of DLM (45 mg kg−1 body weight intragastrically) for 12 weeks. The results showed SY supplementation ameliorated DLM-induced cerebral toxicity. Concretely, SY elevated the content of Se and increased GPX4 level in DLM-treated quail cerebrum. Furthermore, SY enhanced antioxidant defense system by upregulating nuclear factor-erythroid-2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) associated members. Inversely, SY diminished the changes of apoptosis- and inflammation-associated proteins and genes including toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4). Collectively, our results suggest that dietary SY protects against DLM-induced cerebral toxicity in quails via positively regulating the GPX4/TLR4 signaling pathway. Abstract Background Selenium (Se) has been recognized as an essential micronutrient for nearly all forms of life. In recent decades, broiler responses to dietary Se supplemental levels and sources have received considerable attention. On environmental grounds, organic trace mineral utilization in practical broiler feeds has been defended due to its higher bioavailability. In such feeds, trace minerals are provided simultaneously in the same supplement as inorganic salts or organic chelates, a fact commonly ignored in assays conducted to validate organic trace mineral sources. The current assay aimed to investigate growth and biochemical responses, as well as Se retention of growing chicks fed diets supplemented with organic and inorganic Se levels and where the trace minerals (zinc, copper, manganese, and iron) were provided as organic chelates or inorganic salts according to Se source assessed. In so doing, a 2 × 5 factorial arrangement was used to investigate the effects of sodium selenite (SS) and selenium-yeast (SY) supplemented in feeds to provide the levels of 0, 0.08, 0.16, 0.24, and 0.32 mg Se/kg. A trial was conducted to investigate the effects of different Se sources, including sodium selenite (S-Se) and selenium yeast (Y-Se) and different effective microorganism (EM) addition levels on growth performance, meat quality, and muscle fiber characteristics of three-yellow chickens and its potential mechanism. A total of 400 birds were randomly distributed into 4 groups (S-Se, S-Se + EM, Y-Se, and Y-Se + EM groups) consisting of a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement. The main factors were the source of Se (ISe = inorganic Se: 0.2 mg/kg S-Se; OSe = organic Se: 0.2 mg/kg Y-Se) and the level of EM (HEMB = high EM: 0.5% EM; ZEMB = low EM: 0% EM). Each treatment had 5 replicates and each replicate consisted of 20 broiler chickens. The trial lasted for 70 days. The results showed that, in breast muscle, the broiler chickens fed OSe source decreased the pH24h, drip loss, shear force, perimeter, cross-sectional area, and diameter, but increased the a24h* and density compared with the broiler chickens fed ISe source (p < 0.05); broiler chickens supplied with HEMB level decreased the cross-sectional area and diameter, but increased the pH24h, a24h,* and density compared with the broiler chickens supplied with ZEMB level (p < 0.05). In thigh muscle, OSe source and HEMB level also could improve the meat quality and change muscle fiber characteristics of broiler chickens (p < 0.05). Meat quality was correlated with the muscle fiber characteristics (p < 0.05). OSe source and HEMB level could regulate the expression levels of muscle fiber-relative genes in the breast and thigh muscles (p < 0.05). In conclusion, OSe source and HEMB level could improve the meat quality of the breast and thigh muscles of three-yellow chickens by changing the muscle fiber characteristics, and they changed the muscle fiber characteristics by regulating the expression levels of muscle fiber-relative genes.

The effects of sodium selenite or selenium yeast on the meat quality of broilers were searched in the literature published in the Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang Database, China Science and Technology Journal Database (VIP), PubMed, Web of Science, and Science Direct databases from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2022. Meta-analysis was performed with Stata software (StataCorp. 2011), and the standardized mean difference (SMD) and its 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated using a random effects model. Twenty of the identified 846 literature sources, which included 791 broilers, were screened. The meat quality indices considered were shear force, drip loss, cooking loss, water holding capacity (WHC), pH, and color. The source of heterogeneity was studied using sensitivity and subgroup analyses, and publication bias was evaluated using funnel plots. The results showed that the supplementation of selenium in the broiler diet significantly reduced the shear force (SMD = −0.67, 95% CI [−1.12, −0.22], P < 0.05) and drip loss (SMD = −0.84, 95% CI [−1.39, −0.30], P < 0.05) and increased the pH (SMD = 0.38, 95% CI [0.01, 0.75], P < 0.05) of broiler breast muscle; however, it had no significant effects on other indices. Funnel plots revealed a slight publication bias in the shear force and pH of breast muscle but none in the drip loss of breast muscle. The sensitivity analysis showed that the results were stable and reliable. In conclusion, selenium supplementation in broiler feed can improve some indices of broiler meat quality, and its inclusion in broiler diets is recommended, in conjunction with other minerals, which is of great significance to improve the quality, preservation time and economic benefits of chicken products. Internal egg and eggshell quality are often deteriorated in aging laying hens, which causes huge economic losses in the poultry industry. Selenium yeast (SY), as an organic food additive, is utilized to enhance laying performance and egg quality. To extend the egg production cycle, effects of selenium yeast supplementation on egg quality, plasma antioxidants and selenium deposition in aged laying hens were evaluated. In this study, five hundred and twenty-five 76-week-old Jing Hong laying hens were fed a selenium-deficient (SD) diet for 6 weeks. After Se depletion, the hens were randomly divided into seven treatments, which included an SD diet, and dietary supplementation of SY and sodium selenite (SS) at 0.15, 0.30, and 0.45 mg/kg to investigate the effect on egg quality, plasma antioxidant capacity, and selenium content in reproductive organs. After 12 weeks of feeding, dietary SY supplementation resulted in higher eggshell strength (SY0.45) (p < 0.05) and lower shell translucence. Moreover, organs Se levels and plasma antioxidant capacity (T-AOC, T-SOD, and GSH-Px activity) were significantly higher with Se supplementation (p < 0.05). Transcriptomic analysis identified some key candidate genes including cell migration inducing hyaluronidase 1 (CEMIP), ovalbumin (OVAL), solute carrier family 6 member 17 (SLC6A17), proopiomelanocortin (POMC), and proenkephalin (PENK), and potential molecular processes (eggshell mineralization, ion transport, and eggshell formation) involved in selenium yeast’s effects on eggshell formation. In conclusion, SY has beneficial functions for eggshell and we recommend the supplementation of 0.45 mg/kg SY to alleviate the decrease in eggshell quality in aged laying hens.

This study was performed to investigate the effects of selenium yeast (Se-yeast) on the growth, intestinal health, immune status and body composition of juvenile Apostichopus japonicus before and after aestivation. Five experimental diets were formulated with increasing addition of Se-yeast (0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 mg/kg), with the diet without Se-yeast as the control. Each diet was randomly assigned to three tanks of juvenile A. japonicus (initial body weight: 2.96 ± 0.04 g). The whole experiment lasted for 135 days, which included a 45-day feeding experiment before aestivation, a 60-day aestivation phage and a 30-day feeding experiment after aestivation. The results showed that weight gain rate (WGR) was significantly increased by the increasing addition of Se-yeast before aestivation. After aestivation, WGR was markedly elevated by 1.0 mg/kg Se-yeast but was inhibited by 1.5–2.0 mg/kg Se-yeast. The evisceration rate (ER) of A. japonicus was obviously inhibited by the relatively higher addition level of Se-yeast (1.5–2.0 mg/kg) before aestivation. After aestivation, the ER was significantly inhibited by Se-yeast at an addition of 1.5 mg/kg. Before aestivation, the highest activities of all digestive enzymes were obtained by Se-yeast addition at a level equal to or above 1.0 mg/kg Se-yeast. After aestivation, the activities of most digestive enzymes were maximized by Se-yeast at the addition level of no more than 1.0 mg/kg. Before aestivation, the activities of nitric oxide synthase and alkaline phosphatase significantly increased by the increasing addition of Se-yeast. After aestivation, immune related parameters exhibited the highest or comparable values when the addition level of Se-yeast was equal to or less than 1.0 mg/kg. Notably, the selenium content in the body wall of A. japonicus increased significantly as Se-yeast addition increased in the diets. These results showed that Se-yeast at the addition level of 1.5–2.0 mg/kg before aestivation and 1.0–1.5 mg/kg after aestivation was beneficial for the promotion of growth, intestinal health and immune status of juvenile A. japonicus.

BACKGROUND Approximately 0.5–1 billion people worldwide face the risk of selenium (Se) deficiency because of the low Se concentration in their diets. Broccoli can accumulate Se and comprises a source of daily Se supplement for humans. Se biofortification is an effective strategy for enhancing Se content in crops. In the present study, the effects of Se yeast and selenite application on the Se content and nutrient quality of broccoli were investigated. RESULTS: Broccoli growth was promoted by Se yeast but inhibited by selenite. The total Se content of broccoli florets remarkably increased with increasing exogenous Se fertilizer concentrations. The main Se species in broccoli florets were methyl‐selenocysteine and selenomethionine, and their contents were significantly higher under Se yeast treatments than under selenite treatments. Se(VI) was detected only under selenite treatments. Se yeast and selenite had different influences on soluble sugar, soluble protein, vitamin C and free amino acid contents in broccoli florets. The total phenolic acid and glucosinolate contents were substantially increased by Se yeast and selenite, although the total flavonoid content was reduced by Se yeast. Tests on antioxidant enzyme activities revealed that several antioxidant enzymes (catalase, peroxidase, superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase) responded to Se yeast and selenite treatments. CONCLUSION: Se yeast is preferred over selenite for maximizing Se uptake and nutrient accumulation in Se‐rich broccoli cultivation. The experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of selenium yeast and probiotics on production performance and blood biochemical indices of laying hens, and to improve the performance of laying hens. A total of 800 healthy Roman laying hens aged 26 weeks were randomly divided into four groups with five replicates in each group and 40 hens in each replicate. The groups were control group （basal diet）, probiotics group, selenium yeast group and probiotics + selenium yeast group, respectively. The experiment lasted for 60 d. The results showed that compared with the control group, the qualified egg rate and average daily feed intake of probiotics + selenium yeast group were significantly increased （P<0.05）, and the feed to egg ratio was significantly decreased （P<0.05）. The activities of blood glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase were significantly increased （P<0.05）. The contents of aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, creatine phosphokinase and lactate dehydrogenase were significantly decreased （P<0.05）, and the content of alanine aminotrans宦rase was significantly decreased （P<0.01）. The contents of total cholesterol, triglyceride and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol were significantly decreased （P<0.05）. The content of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol was significantly increased （P<0.01）, the content of urea nitrogen was significantly decreased （P<0.01）, and the content of creatinine and uric acid was significantly decreased （P<0.05）. The experiment indicates that dietary supplementation of 1 g/kg probiotics + 0.3 g/kg selenium yeast can improve liver function, lipid metabolism, protein utilization efficiency, antioxidant capacity and production performance of laying hens. Fish larviculture exert great influence in the subsequent phases, in which nutrition is a basic prerequisite for success. Therefore, when it is in an intensified production system, it promotes the limitation of some minerals, making it necessary to supplement selenium in diets for post-larvae. The objective of this study was to evaluate selenium levels and sources in post-larvae Nile tilapia diets on muscle performance and histology. A total of 1,260 post-larvae with an initial average weight of 0.010 g were used, distributed in a completely randomized design in a factorial scheme with four supplementation levels (0.6; 0.9; 1.2 and 1.5 mg of Se/Kg) and two sources (sodium selenite and selenium yeast), plus the negative control, with 35 post-larvae Nile tilapia used per experimental unit. The physical-chemical parameters of water quality were within those recommended for tilapia cultivation. Feed consumption (p < 0.05) and hepatosomatic index (p < 0.05) were affected by the source used. Effects of supplemented selenium levels and sources were not observed for the other performance variables. Higher values for final height, final width, specific development rate and protein efficiency rate were found (p < 0.05) when comparing the control diet with diets containing the sodium selenite source. No effects on muscle fiber morphometry were observed (p > 0.05) in the studied variables. It is concluded that 0.6 mg of selenium in the diet, regardless of the source used, met the mineral requirement for post-larvae Nile tilapia.

A 45‐day feeding trial was carried out to investigate the effects of dietary selenium yeast (Se‐yeast) on the survival, growth performance, activities of digestive enzymes and antioxidant enzymes, and body composition of early juvenile Apostichopus japonicus. Five isoprotic (15.6%) and isolipic (1.5%) feeds with graded levels of Se‐yeast (0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 mg/kg) were formulated and randomly allocated to the early juvenile sea cucumbers (initial weight: 0.11 ± 0.01 g). The results showed that the weight gain rate (WGR) and relative visceral weight ratio (RVW) significantly increased as the Se‐yeast supplementation increased from 0 to 1.0 mg/kg, and then reached a plateau with further increase in Se‐yeast, while survival rate (SR) increased as the supplementation level of Se‐yeast increased, and the lipase and amylase activities first significantly increased as the Se‐yeast increased from 0 to 1.0 mg/kg, and then significantly decreased with the continuous supplementation of Se‐yeast. The antioxidant capacity and nonspecific immunity were significantly elevated by the moderate level (0.5 and 1.0 mg/kg) of Se‐yeast. Besides, the activities of immune‐related enzymes and transcription of antioxidation‐related genes were significantly elevated by the supplementation of Se‐yeast. However, malonaldehyde contents were significantly reduced in the treatments with 0.5 and 1.0 mg/kg Se‐yeast. The selenium content in the body wall of the sea cucumber showed a markedly increasing trend with increasing Se‐yeast supplementation levels. Results above indicated that a moderate level (0.5–1.0 mg/kg) of Se‐yeast enhanced the growth performance, digestive enzyme activities, antioxidant capacity and nonspecific immunity of early juvenile A. japonicus. Cadmium (Cd) is a ubiquitous environmental pollutant of increasing worldwide concern to both humans and animals. Selenium yeast (Se-Y) is an organic selenium source that has been shown an advantage in antagonizing Cd-induced liver necroptosis in chicken. Herein, we described the discovery path of Se-Y antagonism in Cd-induced renal necroptosis in chicken through targeting miR-26a-5p/PTEN/PI3K/AKT signaling pathway. We set up four groups of chickens at random: control group (0.5 mg/kg Na2SeO3), Se-Y group (0.5 mg/kg Se-Y), Se-Y+Cd group (0.5 mg/kg Se-Y and 150 mg/kg CdCl2) and Cd group (150 mg/kg CdCl2 and 0.5 mg/kg Na2SeO3). Interestingly, we found Se-Y, but not Na2SeO3, significantly blocked Cd accumulation in the kidney and alleviated Cd-induced necroptosis through inhibiting the expression of RIP1, RIP3 and MLKL. Se-Y, activated miR-26a-5p expression, thereby down-regulated the expression of PTEN, resulting in the up-regulation of PI3K/AKT signaling pathway and the inhibition of oxidative stress in both Se-Y and Cd treated chickens. Besides that, Se-Y could also specifically reduce the expression levels of heat shock protein 60 (HSP60), HSP70 and HSP90 in Se-Y and Cd co-treated chickens. Taken together, our results showed that Se-Y has an added value to antagonize Cd-induced necroptosis in chicken kidney by regulating the miR-26a-5p/PTEN/PI3K/AKT signaling pathway and HSPs, indicating that Se-Y could serve as an effective antagonist on Cd-induced renal necroptosis in chickens.
