This study investigates patterns in the chaotic appearance of self-help incremental housing in a kampung settlement. Many previous studies have investigated suitable incremental housing for low-income residents, but the pattern of self-help incremental housing has not been carefully investigated. The shape grammar method is used to identify the delivered pattern of self-help incremental housing, and in-depth interviews are performed to clarify the reasons for the pattern found. This study finds that the organized chaotic pattern of self-help incremental housing depends on geographical location and familial relationships, which allow construction over the perimeter of a land parcel through negotiation to reach agreement between homeowners and neighbors. Further, self-help incremental housing is driven by external and internal factors, such as the lack of affordability in the housing market, the mismatch of available job opportunities with the credentials and competencies, and the practiced social relationships among kin or relatives, which demand the expansion of the size of the residence to allow sufficient meeting space and privacy for the core and extended family members. Traditional views on flood vulnerability often present a simplistic government-community relationship, portraying communities as passive recipients of aid. This perspective overlooks the dynamic agency of urban residents in shaping their own governance structures. Recent research challenges this binary thinking by revealing how communities actively manage flood risks. However, the intricate interplay between government absence and community-led actions, and their role in everyday governance, remains underexplored. Drawing on scholarship in flood vulnerability and community-led governance, this paper examines the experiences and management strategies of flood-prone residents in Dansoman, Accra, using interviews, focus groups, and “follow-along participant observation.” Three key themes emerged: “anticipate and navigate,” “collaborate and compensate for,” and “rupture and replace.” These themes illustrate how residents acquiesce to, reconfigure, or challenge government roles in flood management, establishing self-governance through community-led initiatives. These efforts often legitimize and strengthen community resilience, sometimes even usurping and replacing state authority. The findings underscore the need to recognize community agency in managing flood risks and compensating for insufficient government support through solidarity and self-help. Policymakers can enhance flood management by incorporating these community-driven insights, fostering more effective, inclusive, and sustainable strategies that reflect the fluid, evolving relationships between government and communities. Introduction: Transdiagnostic self-help cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) approaches may help ease the burden of untreated symptoms of internalizing distress, especially in geographic areas with relatively small numbers of mental health providers. Methods: Over the course of 12 months, we conducted a six-week randomized controlled trial (N = 275) across Indiana, a state with high unmet need for mental health care. All participants were given immediate access to a single-session intervention (SSI) followed by randomization to either guided or unguided CBT-based bibliotherapy. We used mixed models to model change over time in distress, well-being, and emotion regulation as a piecewise function of study week. Results: The sample was in their early 30s (M = 34.10, SD = 11.68), mostly female (75.64%, n = 208) and, consistent with the demographics of the state, mostly Non-Hispanic White (80.36%, n = 221). Less than half of participants accessed the SSI (39.27%, n = 108). There was no evidence that completing the SSI was associated with improved outcomes, though it improved study engagement. Participants randomized to the guided (vs. unguided) condition experienced greater overall improvements in internalizing distress (SMD=-0.44, 95% CI: -0.74, -0.13) and cognitive reappraisal (SMD = 0.32, 95% CI: 0.06, 0.58). The differences between groups in improvements in well-being (SMD = 0.25, 95% CI: -0.13, 0.63) and expressive suppression (SMD=-0.24, 95% CI: -0.55, 0.07) were smaller and not statistically significant. Virtually all participants expressed some interest in more therapy via telehealth (89.74%, n = 140). Findings were sensitive to multiple imputation using random forests as well as propensity score matching. Discussion: Self-help approaches are scalable interventions for individuals in under-served states. As in previous work, guided self-help was more effective than unguided self-help. This study explores the development and evaluation of a game aimed at fostering sustainable self-help and mutual help education for disaster prevention. The game, developed using Unity and Blender, addresses the critical need for effective disaster preparedness, emphasizing the importance of community cooperation, as evidenced by the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, in which most rescues were performed by neighbors. Additionally, it features realistic disaster scenarios, and the game's design incorporates gamification and simulation elements to enhance learning and engagement. An experiment involving 20 participants aged 20–21 years was conducted to evaluate the game's effectiveness. Participants played the game on desktop personal computers for at least 10 min, and their performance and awareness were measured through pre- and post-gameplay questionnaires. The results indicated no statistically significant improvement in the ability to cooperate with strangers, provide correct instructions, or overall consciousness of helping others. However, a slight increase in the average scores was observed. Participant feedback highlighted the game's realistic approach and suggested improvements in operability and platform compatibility. The study concludes that while the game shows promise, further development and research are needed to enhance its educational impact and effectiveness in disaster preparedness. Given the high prevalence of overweight and obesity amongst educators, this study investigated the feasibility of the 16-week Health4LIFE weight loss intervention for primary school educators living with overweight/obesity in low-income settings in Cape Town, South Africa. The research comprised two sub-studies, a pilot randomised controlled trial testing the intervention (10 intervention, n = 79 and 10 control schools, n = 58), and an investigation of the perceptions of participating educators and principals. Feasibility outcomes included reach, applicability, acceptability, implementation integrity, and a hypothesis-generating signal of effect on lifestyle factors and weight. The intervention consisted of a wellness day, weight loss manual, and text messages. Results indicated acceptable reach, with positive feedback on intervention components from principals and educators. Implementation was largely successful, though three schools dropped out due to scheduling issues. Barriers included interruption of teaching time and busy school schedules. The intervention group (n = 42) showed favourable shifts in belief patterns, stages of change, and lifestyle behaviours, with a trend towards weight loss. Control group (n = 43) changes were limited to dietary intake. The triangulation of results supported the intervention's feasibility in terms of primary and secondary outcomes. Recommendations for enhancement include adding in-person follow-up sessions and an app-based element to potentially increase impact on lifestyle indicators and weight loss. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT Background Methods Discussion Trial Registration Scientific research has consistently emphasised the high levels of stress encountered by family caregivers of individuals living with dementia. However, conventional self‐help approaches remain underutilised. The ‘Diversity‐On’ study addresses this issue. The study employs a storytelling approach to develop and evaluate an online self‐help program that is participatory and diversity‐sensitive, thereby ensuring congruence with diverse identities and lifeworlds.The study uses a mixed‐methods design, comprising the allocation and implementation of the intervention, the development of stories, a process evaluation (N = 20) and an outcome evaluation (quantitative: N = 130, qualitative: N = 20). The study's primary focus is its comprehensive participatory approach, integrated throughout the research process. The study is dependent on the input of a number of stakeholders, all of whom are committed to advocating for the concerns of patients.Given its participatory methodology and intersectional perspective, the ‘Diversity‐On’ study is anticipated to yield a number of significant outcomes. The study has the potential to empower family caregivers of individuals living with dementia who are under high stress, empowering them to take part in self‐help groups despite multiple barriers, thus alleviating their burden. Little is known about the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) specific self-help for psychosis, given that CBT is a highly recommended treatment for psychosis. Thus, research has grown regarding CBT-specific self-help for psychosis, warranting an overall review of the literature. A systematic literature review was conducted, following a published protocol which can be found at: https://www.crd.york.ac.uk/prospero/export%5frecord%5fpdf.php. A search was conducted across Scopus, PubMed, PsycInfo, and Web of Science to identify relevant literature, exploring CBT-based self-help interventions for individuals experiencing psychosis. The PICO search strategy tool was used to generate search terms. A narrative synthesis was conducted of all papers, and papers were appraised for quality. Ten studies were included in the review. Seven papers found credible evidence to support the effectiveness of CBT-based self-help in reducing features of psychosis. Across the studies, common secondary outcomes included depression, overall psychological well-being, and daily functioning, all of which were also found to significantly improve following self-help intervention, as well as evidence to support its secondary benefit for depression, anxiety, overall well-being, and functioning. This study aimed to review the existing published and grey literature describing the concepts of self-management, self-care, and self-help, and to capture strategies or techniques related to these concepts, for adolescents with emotional problems. Emotional problems are rising amongst adolescents, yet timely access to specialist mental health treatment is limited to those with greater severity of mental health difficulties. Self-management, self-care, and self-help strategies may be used by adolescents with emotional problems both in terms of those waiting for treatment and to prevent relapse. Given the overlap in existing definitions and the lack of clarity around these concepts in an adolescent mental health context, a scoping review of the literature is warranted to provide clarity. Eligible studies were those involving adolescents aged 10 to 19 years with symptoms of emotional problems. Studies referenced self-management, self-care, or self-help, not involving a professional, in this population. Quantitative, qualitative, economic, and mixed methods studies, as well as systematic, scoping, and literature reviews, from 2000 onwards and in the English language, were eligible for inclusion. A systematic search was conducted of both published and grey literature. Databases searched included PsycINFO, Medline, Embase, Web of Science, and CINAHL Plus. Mednar was also searched for unpublished studies and grey literature. Tables of themes, terms, and associated strategies are presented alongside a thematic analysis of the results. 62 articles were included. These were 20 quantitative studies, 14 systematic reviews, 10 qualitative studies, five review papers, four book chapters, four mixed methods studies, two dissertations, two meta-analyses and one scoping review and systematic review. Most of the included articles referenced self-help (n = 51), followed by self-management (n = 17) and self-care (n = 6). A total of 12 themes were identified from a reflexive thematic analysis of descriptions (and associated strategies) of self-management, self-help, or self-care in included texts. This scoping review provides clarity on the similarities and differences between how these concepts are discussed, and the strategies which are associated with each of these concepts in the relevant literature. Implications for policy and intervention development for adolescents' self-management, self-help, and self-care of their mental health are discussed. There is considerable overlap in both the ways in which these concepts are described, and the strategies or approaches proposed in relation to them, supporting previous research suggesting these strategies should be grouped under a single term, such as "self or community approaches." More research is needed for self-management, self-help, and self-care amongst marginalized groups as these adolescents may have the highest unmet need for mental health support. Insomnia, a prevalent sleep disorder in contemporary society, frequently coexists with other mental health conditions such as depression, schizophrenia, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Sleep disorders can compromise daytime functioning and overall quality of life. While music has been explored as an adjunct therapy for insomnia, its efficacy in improving insomnia among students remains unclear. Seventy-five students, aged between 18 and 30 years with an average age of 20.97 years (SD: 1.92), presenting sleep issues were randomly allocated to one of three groups: the classical music group, the jazz music group, and the control group, each with 25 participants. Participants in the classical and jazz music group were instructed to listen to classical or jazz music for a minimum of 30 min preceding bedtime. This was paired with deep breathing and relaxation techniques, practiced two consecutive nights per week from 23:00 to 01:00 over a five-week intervention period. Conversely, participants in the control group were only directed to follow the deep breathing and relaxation techniques before sleep on two consecutive nights weekly. Insomnia severity with the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), depressive symptoms with the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI- II), and anxiety symptoms with the Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS). Measurements were taken at baseline, after the second week of intervention, at the intervention's conclusion (five weeks), and two months post-intervention (follow-up). 1. The music groups showed a significant difference in insomnia severity compared with the control group after five weeks of intervention(p <.05). 2. music groups exhibited significant enhancements in sleep quality relative to the control group after a five-week intervention (p <.05). 3. Background: Now affecting one in six couples in Canada, infertility is defined as a lack of conception after 12 or more months of regular, unprotected heterosexual intercourse. Infertility is associated with immense psychological burden, particularly for individuals assigned female at birth. Yet existing psychological interventions are not specialized to this population and have been shown to be only marginally effective at relieving distress related to infertility. Thus, a new online self-directed psychological intervention was co-created with a panel of women experiencing infertility, and ultimately consisted of six 10-min video modules addressing the cognitive, emotional, and interpersonal aspects of infertility-related distress. Methods: In the current study, 21 women experiencing reduced quality of life related to infertility were recruited to participate in a one-arm pre-post pilot testing the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of the program. Participant adherence and retention were monitored, and participants rated the credibility of the program and the helpfulness of each module as well as provided feedback on the content and format of the program. Pre-to-post changes in fertility quality of life, anxious symptoms, depressive symptoms, and relationship satisfaction were examined. Results: The program modules were highly rated by participants, with average helpfulness ratings ranging from 7.5 to 8.2/10. Two participants became pregnant and therefore stopped prematurely, 79% of the remaining participants completed all six modules, and participants reported completing 52.8 (SD = 82.0) min of homework per week. Participants perceived the intervention as highly credible and generally approved of the format, length, and speed; however, 68% of participants had recommendations for additional content to be included in the intervention. While relationship satisfaction did not change significantly over time, large pre-to-post improvements in fertility quality of life, depression, and anxiety were observed (p <.001; Cohen's ds = 0.9–1.3). Conclusions: This self-directed intervention was well received and has the potential to be highly effective in reducing infertility-related distress, informing future development and optimization. »Praktische Tagträume: Selbstoptimierung durch Verbraucherlebensstile in China«. The ethos of self-optimization calls on people to imagine a desirable future state of existence and to approach this desired state by adjusting aspects of their everyday lives. This ethos depends on a specific capacity for fantasy. Therefore, this article argues that the concept of self-optimization applies not only to entrepreneurial self-making but also to consumer lifestyles and that it provides a useful critical lens for investigating cultural constructions of labor, leisure, and desire. China has been depicted a place inimical to fantasy, where dreams are denied by social and political pressures. However, in today's China personal dreams symbolize modern subjectivity. Drawing on ethnographic and textual research on self-help psychology in China, this article traces links between self-optimization and various actors, including entrepreneurs, marketers, activists, and authors, who are teaching Chinese youth to craft explicit visions of their ideal life. The article contextualizes projects of self-optimization within China's exploding consumer culture, and in a society where markets are entangled with interpersonal networks and encompassed by state policies. Background 600 Norwegians die by suicide annually. Self-help apps may potentially reach and support suicidal individuals, next of kin, bereaved and professionals with educational information, access to suicide emergency help, hotlines, and coping tools. Knowledge regarding feasible app interface for suicide prevention self-help apps in a Norwegian context is however lacking.Aim Evaluate user-friendliness and user interface of the Norwegian version of the British Stay Alive suicide prevention app and assess whether the app could be useful in suicide prevention.Materials and Methods Eight Norwegian Fountain house members and twelve university students evaluated the app interface, and their experiences were discussed through individual- or focus-group interviews.Results Participants perceived app tools as relevant and useful for suicide prevention, however they raised concerns on privacy, evidence base, interface complexity, unintended symbolic value of app colours and content, and suitability in suicidal states.Conclusion The current Norwegian Stay Alive version has the potential to be user friendly, however improvements of interface are suggested.Significance Stay Alive interface must be adjusted and subjected to reiterative evaluations and feasibility assessments in collaboration with additional stakeholder populations to remedy interface concerns, and identify optimal Norwegian interface design, prior to implementation.

The teaching profession can be challenging. It depends on each individual how they deal with challenges in the work environment, in communicating with colleagues and pupils, and how successful they are in solving various problems. In the study, we were interested in how four female visual arts teachers understand and become aware of the specifics of emotional and social skills in their own life situations through visual arts products. The research took place over three months during twelve meetings. The study revealed that visual arts teachers understand emotional and social skills as specific tools with which they recognise their emotions and needs and the ability to empathise with others. Within the visual arts solutions, teachers most often pointed to the content they associate with recognising one’s own thoughts, feelings, and values and how they influence one’s response. In the visual arts solutions, the least content was related to building and maintaining positive and stable relationships with different people and groups. This study confirms that individuals, through their activity and their own strengthening of social and emotional skills, can make a decisive contribution to the development of personal strength, an active and responsible attitude towards themselves and their lives.

AbstractFloods have become a persistent phenomenon in Kogi State, transforming into a humanitarian tragedy over time. However, the experiences of victims have not only been insufficiently examined but also not approached from the perspective of the Social Ecological System (SES) theory. Relying on the SES theory, this study explored the experiences of flood victims in Kogi State. Data was elicited from 15 participants and analyzed thematically. The findings reveal recurring themes, including the annual occurrence of floods, heightened susceptibility to malaria and water-related illnesses, and devastated livelihoods. The participants also conveyed feelings of government neglect and insufficient support, a sense of pessimistic fatalism, a shift toward self-reliance due to non-dependence on the government, and a reliance on prayer and hope for a better tomorrow. Analyzed through the lens of the SES theory, these identified themes shed light on the multifaceted challenges faced by flood victims in Kogi State and emphasize the need for adaptive flood governance involving comprehensive and participatory approaches to decision-making and management that involve multiple stakeholders locally, regionally and globally in addressing the flood challenge.

Abstract Introduction Parents of children with a neurodevelopmental disorder (NDD) experience more stress than parents of typically developing children. In a cocreation process with experts and parents, a low-threshold application that uses exercises based on the principles of positive psychology and mindfulness was developed. This application, called “Adappt,” aims at enhancing the ability to adapt of the parents and caregivers of children with NDDs and at supporting their mental health. This protocol describes the evaluation study of the effectiveness of Adappt, its core working mechanisms and user experiences. Method A pragmatic international multicenter randomized controlled trial will compare the effectiveness of Adappt with a (delayed) waitlist control condition. At least 212 parents or primary caregivers of children younger than 18 years diagnosed with or suspected of a NDD will be randomly assigned to the intervention or waitlist control condition. Participants are excluded if they have severe anxiety or depression levels or are in treatment for mental health issues. Measures will be collected online at baseline, post-intervention (1 month after baseline), and 4 and 7 months after baseline. The primary outcome is the improvement in generic sense of ability to adapt as measured with the Generic Sense of Ability to Adapt Scale (GSAAS; (Front Psychol 14:985408, 2023)) at 4-month follow-up. Secondary outcomes are mental well-being, (parental) distress, and client satisfaction with “Adappt.” Discussion Results of this study will contribute to knowledge on the effectiveness of a low-threshold application for parents of children with a NDD in multiple countries. If the application is found to be effective in improving mental health, recommendations will be made for implementation in health care. The purpose of this study was to examine the feasibility of an intervention program focused on career transition psychological support for retired Olympic athletes in Japan. It was expected that the intervention program would significantly enhance knowledge about career transition support for athletes and also enhance attitudes towards seeking career transition support. 24 retired Japanese female athletes who had competed in the Olympics between 1996 and 2016 participated in the study. The content of the support program was delivered in a three-part workshop, focusing on career transitions in sport, post-retirement psychological adjustment difficulties, and coping strategies. Pre-workshop and post-workshop assessment were conducted. Career transition support knowledge for athletes and attitudes about seeking career transition support significantly increased. The current results suggest that increasing knowledge helps retired and retiring athletes seek professional help. Practical applications and future research recommendations are provided.

Abstract Background There is a need to develop psychological interventions for depression in people with skin conditions. This study aimed to investigate the acceptability, feasibility, and effects of an online compassion-based self-help intervention for depression in people with skin conditions. Methods Adult participants (n = 34) with skin conditions and mild-moderate depressive symptoms were invited to undertake a six-week, compassion-based online intervention for depression with email support. Engagement with the intervention was monitored, along with time spent facilitating the intervention, and participant feedback was collected each week and post-intervention. Pre-post changes in depression, self-compassion and dermatological quality of life were also assessed. Results The intervention was started by 25 participants and completed by 13. Feedback scores indicated that the website was evaluated positively and that the sessions had positive impacts on participants. Participants appreciated the skin-specific aspects of the intervention but varied as to which of the compassion-based exercises they found helpful. The online intervention was feasible to provide and facilitate, and treatment completers showed improvements in depression, quality of life and self-compassion. Conclusions The online compassion-based intervention holds promise as a treatment for depression in people with skin conditions. Introduction: The Eastern Caribbean island of Dominica has experienced diverse negative effects from the North Atlantic hurricane season, including deadly storms like Hurricane Maria in 2017. Vulnerability is increased by geographic location, small island developing state (SIDS) status, and ecosystem characteristics. A variety of negative health effects including stress and anxiety are caused by powerful storms. The perspectives of middle-aged (the "sandwich generation") survivors in this post-storm milieu are understudied. Methods: This phenomenological qualitative study describes the perceptions of middle-aged (35-55 years) Dominicans, purposively recruited with gatekeeper assistance from communities stratified according to four natural hazard vulnerability categories designated by the Climate Resilience Execution Agency for Dominica (CREAD), regarding their lived experiences in the context of severe storms. Data was collected between June and August 2022, using primarily Zoom-based semi-structured, individual interviews (12 of 13), guided by the principles of saturation and maximum variation. Verbatim interview transcripts were thematically analyzed with constant comparison using an ATLAS.ti-supported hybrid deductive-inductive coding frame. Reflexivity and contact summary sheets were used to minimize bias. Results: Ten women and three men from diverse CREAD vulnerability and sociodemographic backgrounds were recruited. Data condensation yielded three organizing themes: (i) "The diverse health effects of severe storms", (ii) "Response to and recovery from severe storms", and (iii) "Preparedness and precaution for severe storms". These themes encapsulated the health impacts of severe storms on Dominicans and elucidated the role of facilitating and barricading resilience factors. Discussion: Severe storms produced direct and indirect mental, social, and physical health impacts on middle-aged Dominicans, including anxiety and burnout. Participants used faith-based, tangible community-based support, and emotional mechanisms to cope with and demonstrate resilience. Better risk communication and early warning systems would improve population readiness. Persistent dispirited attitudes toward storm preparedness among some participants suggest the need for targeted methods to enhance community involvement in disaster planning, including traditional approaches like "coup-de-main" (self-help). To date, no evidence-based practices are identified for working with students who are deafblind (DB). No evidence-based practices have been identified for teaching basic self-help skills such as dressing. The present study examined the efficacy of an intervention package including the system of least prompts (SLP; i.e., SLP and least-to-most prompting), visual cues, and reinforcement to teach three self-help skills (i.e., wash hands, dry hands, entry routine) to four participants, ages 3-5 years, with vision and hearing impairments and multiple disabilities. A multiple probe across behaviors design, replicated across participants, was used to evaluate the effectiveness of an intervention package including SLP to teach self-help skills. Three of four participants increased their independence for all targeted self-help skills. A functional relation is indicated for three of four participants and provides promising evidence for use of SLP in teaching individuals with multiple disabilities that include DB. The aim of the study was to develop a self-management manual for tinnitus. The study was carried out in three phases. In phase-1, an evidence-based approach was considered by reviewing the literature to select intervention strategies that had proven to reduce tinnitus percept. Further, health literacy recommendations were used to convey the information in the manual to the patient. Phase-2 included expert committee scrutiny and assessing the understandability and actionability of the prepared self-management manual using the Patient Education Material Assessment Tool (PEMAT). In Phase-3, the self-management manual was validated from tinnitus patients. The expert committee mainly gave suggestions regarding the content, word choice and grammatical errors. PEMAT scores from patients and the expert committee revealed that activities provided in the manual are understandable and actionable. The THI and TFI scores were reduced after one month of short-term intervention. The self-management manual effectively reduced tinnitus percept and associated problems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Smartphone apps may help to prevent the transition from minor to severe mental health problems. We compared a free self-help smartphone app (COGITO; www.uke.de/cogito%5fapp) against a wait-list condition for the improvement of self-esteem and depression. The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale represented the primary outcome in this controlled trial. The final sample (n = 213) was randomly assigned to either the app or to the control condition. The app condition significantly improved the primary outcome relative to controls for all analyses. Satisfaction of completers was high. The present results warrant independent replication; the retention rate needs to be increased to allow solid inferences about acceptance. In Japan, the so-called neoliberal-inspired transition generally refers to an ideological agenda. However, one should distinguish between neoliberal reforms carried out in accordance with a political agenda and the genuine local evolution of ideas based on the influence of foreign thinkers. By leveraging key notions such as 'individual responsibility' (jiko sekinin), 'self-help' (jijo), 'mutual aid' (kyōjo) and 'public aid' (kōjo), this paper accounts for older roots of Japanese-style neoliberalism. It highlights how, throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, predating current liberal norms, certain notions preceded contemporary liberal ideas and served as a discursive framework, while others became intertwined with 'foreign' ideas as they permeated the political discourse. It illuminates how shorter-term politics characterized by conflicts of interest and political strategies fit within longer-term political notions and their ideological evolution. Studies on the treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adolescence indicate small to moderate treatment effects (e.g., of parent training). Self-help interventions might overcome structural and personal barriers to treatment utilization. The present proof-of-concept study examined the feasibility and effectiveness of a twelve-month, telephone-assisted self-help (TASH) intervention for caregivers of adolescents with ADHD. This intervention comprised 8 booklets on the management of ADHD-related problems and 14 telephone counseling sessions. Sixty-six caregivers participated in the study with a one-group pretest-posttest design (intention-to-treat sample). Of these, forty-three families completed the intervention in accordance with the study protocol (per-protocol sample). Compared to families with early discontinuation (n = 23, drop-out sample), adolescents in the per-protocol sample demonstrated a higher level of caregiver-rated emotional problems and a lower level of quality of life at pre-assessment. Caregivers in the per-protocol sample showed high adherence and reported high satisfaction with the intervention. Analyses of the per-protocol sample yielded significant, moderate to large pre-to-post improvements in caregiver-rated ADHD symptoms (primary outcome; d = 0.81, 95% confidence interval [0.51, 1.11]), oppositional, emotional and behavioral problems and quality of life of the adolescents, and caregiver self-efficacy during the intervention. In intention-to-treat analyses, which considered data of all 66 participants who had originally participated in the study, the pre-post differences in ADHD symptoms, emotional and behavioral problems, and quality of life remained at their significant level. These results provide initial support for the feasibility and effectiveness of the TASH intervention. Its efficacy compared to control conditions remains to be examined. Highlights: Clinical guidelines recommend the use of parent training in the treatment of adolescents with ADHD. In case of barriers to treatment utilization, low-threshold self-help interventions might be a viable treatment alternative. This study evaluated a twelve-month telephone-assisted self-help intervention for caregivers of adolescents with ADHD using a pre-post design. Objective: Peer support workers are a substantial and growing part of the mental health workforce. Because little research has investigated how to effectively support and supervise peer support workers, the authors evaluated the efficacy of a training program to strengthen the peer support workforce and the supervision of its workers. Methods: Mental health services sites with peer support workers and supervisors in Los Angeles County were recruited for this cluster-randomized trial and 10-month follow-up. Of 348 peer support workers and 143 supervisors at 85 sites, 251 (72%) peer support workers and 115 (80%) supervisors completed baseline surveys. SHARE! the Self-Help And Recovery Exchange, a peer-run organization, delivered four training sessions on strategies to reduce stigma and to build an effective peer workforce, cultural competence, and a trauma-informed developmental model of supervision. Primary outcomes were peer-supportive organizational climate, mental health stigma, and peer support worker recovery. Results: Intention-to-treat analyses indicated that sites receiving the training had significantly higher scores on peer-supportive organizational climate (Cohen's d=0.35, 95% CI=0.02–0.68, p=0.04) relative to sites not receiving the training. No significant differences were found between the two conditions for mental health stigma (Cohen's d=0.04) or peer support worker recovery (Cohen's d=0.14). Conclusions: The training had no impact on mental health stigma or peer support worker recovery. However, the findings suggest that the training increased the value organizations gave to peer support work, which may help improve peer support worker retention and outcomes among those served. In this article, I analyse constructions of the self in bestselling self-help books in the United Kingdom. In doing so, I offer a re-appraisal of contemporary therapeutic culture. Therapeutic culture has long been associated with neoliberal governance, and scholars have argued that popular therapeutic narratives promote neoliberal accounts of an autonomous, masterful 'entrepreneurial self', able to thrive in the world on its own. However, beginning with the international financial crisis of 2008, neoliberalism has entered a period of serious and accelerating crisis and contestation. The question therefore arises to what extent popular therapeutic narratives might have changed during this period. In response, I analyse narratives of the self and self-improvement in UK self-help bestsellers between 2008 and 2022. Given their high sales and consumption, self-help books are prominent in the constitution of popular therapeutic discourse. I focus on the UK as an emblematic case, given its history of neoliberal politics, the latter's recent crisis, and the salience of therapeutic culture in the country. Across the analysed period, my findings point to the emergence of alternative, survivalist and spiritual, therapeutic discourses that move beyond the model of the entrepreneurial self, while ultimately retaining its core assumptions about rational, autonomous behavioural modification. The CONfidence app was developed to address an unmet need for access to self-help advice and information for bladder and bowel incontinence. The app was developed by the Bladder and Bowel CONfidence Health Integration Team and Expert Self Care and this paper describes the evolution of this innovation to empower patients and the public with bladder and bowel leakage. The app is intended to provide a proactive approach to continence promotion and not replace formal healthcare. Crucial steps were identified to ensuring this resource was accessible and understandable for the intended audience including: input from national clinical experts and individuals with lived experience to co-produce content, clear definition of scope, technical expertise in app development, clear language avoiding jargon or medical terms, credibility assurance and a strategic plan for dissemination. The app is free to download and will remain so to ensure evidence-based continence advice can be in the palm of all with a smartphone. The CONfidence app has been downloaded approaching 7000 times and is in use in 10 countries. Self-Help Agricultural Training Centers (SARTC) is an institution established by advanced farmers with a willingness to share their successful farming experiences and create a learning community with peers. Mapping and classifying SARTC informs farming excellence and training service capability standards so that governments, communities, and farmers can obtain technologies that are more appropriate to the region's conditions. Therefore, this study aims to map and categorize SARTC in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Data collection was conducted through interviews and observations by combining spatial analysis, interview results, and secondary data. The results showed that SARTC are spread across each geographical zone and classified based on their ability to provide training services independently. Based on this finding, SARTC have functioned as farmer-to-farmer extension institutions that are specifically organized and not individualized. The capability class of SARTC was found to be more dominant in the intermediate and primary classes. Therefore, the policy to be pursued is to upgrade the SARTC capability class to the primary class to make participatory extension more effective. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Online youth-focused health programs often include parent modules—that equip parents with skills to assist their child in improving their health—alongside youth-specific content. BRAVE Self-Help, an evidence-based program designed for children and teenagers with early signs of anxiety, is a popular Australian program that includes six parent modules. Despite its popularity and proven efficacy, BRAVE Self-Help shares the same challenge as many online self-help programs—that of low participant engagement. Using parents registered in BRAVE Self-Help as 'information rich' participants, we explored (a) factors that influenced parent engagement in online health programs, and (b) their recommendations for enhancing parent engagement. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 14 parents registered in BRAVE Self-Help. Data were analysed through reflexive thematic analysis. Social-, family- and program-related factors drove parents' program engagement and recommendations. Social sub-themes related to the benefits of professional and community support in promoting more engagement. Family sub-themes included difficulties with program engagement due to competing priorities, perceptions that condition severity influenced engagement, and feelings that previously-acquired health knowledge reduced motivation to engage. Program sub-themes included perceived usefulness and ease-of-use. Program designers could target support systems, include flexible delivery options, and use iterative design processes to enhance parent engagement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Stressful events can exacerbate symptoms of psychiatric disorders among primary care patients, putting them at increased risk for suicide. In a pilot study that ran from August to December of 2020, researchers evaluated the acceptability and implementation of Managing Emotions in Disaster and Crisis (MEDIC), a self-help intervention designed to assist at-risk primary care patients. A total of 108 at-risk veterans completed baseline and 6-week assessments. Results were promising, with high patient acceptability and engagement along with improvement in all measures of mental illness symptoms from baseline to posttreatment. The notion of self-care—like its precursor, self-help—has emerged due to a spiritual vacuum in the contemporary world. The burgeoning mental health crisis that is prevalent today appears inseparable from the broader existential predicament facing humanity. Mainstream psychology and its therapies have not been able to address these challenges, in response to which we have seen the inevitable rise of self-care remedies. Across humanity’s diverse spiritual cultures, these have always been available, yet they were invariably grounded in a religious tradition and its sacred psychology. The more we are marginalized from such roots, the more self-care is required—our current obsession with which is the unacknowledged search for wholeness due to modern people having lost their sense of the sacred. Background: There is a need to develop psychological interventions for depression in people with skin conditions. This study aimed to investigate the acceptability, feasibility, and effects of an online compassion-based self-help intervention for depression in people with skin conditions. Methods: Adult participants (n = 34) with skin conditions and mild-moderate depressive symptoms were invited to undertake a six-week, compassion-based online intervention for depression with email support. Engagement with the intervention was monitored, along with time spent facilitating the intervention, and participant feedback was collected each week and post-intervention. Pre-post changes in depression, self-compassion and dermatological quality of life were also assessed. Results: The intervention was started by 25 participants and completed by 13. Feedback scores indicated that the website was evaluated positively and that the sessions had positive impacts on participants. Participants appreciated the skin-specific aspects of the intervention but varied as to which of the compassion-based exercises they found helpful. The online intervention was feasible to provide and facilitate, and treatment completers showed improvements in depression, quality of life and self-compassion. Conclusions: The online compassion-based intervention holds promise as a treatment for depression in people with skin conditions. AbstractThe financialisation of housing is associated with the emergence of new investor subjectivities but, to date, little has been said about how these subject positions are gendered. In contrast, this paper brings a feminist lens to the topic through a textual analysis of the Australian financial self-help book, Smashed Avocado by Nicole Haddow (2019). By illuminating how Haddow’s self-narrated arc (or makeover) from fiscal failure to a successful property owner or ‘Rentvestor’ is inflected by sexuality, whiteness, and class, we highlight previously underexamined dimensions of property investor subjectivity as it is mediated by gender. Furthermore, we argue that gendering of property investment discourses in the feminised genre of self-help, suggests that the growing imperative of fiscal performativity is central to the (re)production of white (settler colonial), middle-class femininity. In concluding the paper, we call for more feminist attention to be given to the uneven geographies of everyday financialisation as they pertain to housing and feminist theorising on the home. In the past few decades, self-help books on communication have ranked among the top titles on bestseller lists. Offering advice about improving communication skills in a variety of contexts, they both reflect and promote a widespread discourse about the importance of good communication in everyday life, in what is in fact a paradoxical endeavor – solving flawed communication with more communication. Based on an analysis of 18 bestselling self-help books, the paper examines the meaning of three recurring themes – "listening," "awareness" and "practice" – and analyzes the paradoxical relationship between what the books say about communication and how they say it. The findings serve to illuminate the relationship between communication and metacommunication more broadly, which, in turn, helps to explain the conditions by which authors express their ideas – their selection of textuality, despite, and precisely because of, its difference from oral talk. The study examined potential mediating effects of therapist behaviors in the per-protocol sample (n = 108) of a randomized controlled trial comparing a behavioral and a nondirective guided self-help intervention for parents of children with externalizing disorders (4–11 years). Additionally, from an exploratory perspective, we analyzed a sequential model with parental adherence as second mediator following therapist behavior. Outcomes were child symptom severity of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and oppositional defiant disorder rated by blinded clinicians, and parent-rated child functional impairment. We found a significant indirect effect on the reduction of ADHD and functional impairment through emotion- and relationship-focused therapist behavior in the nondirective intervention. Additionally, we found limited support for an extended sequential mediation effect through therapist behavior and parental adherence in the models for these outcomes. The study proposes potential mediating mechanisms unique to the nondirective intervention and complements previous findings on mediator processes in favor of the behavioral group.
