The self-reference effect (SRE) is a memory advantage produced by encoding information in a self-relevant manner. The "evaluative" SRE arises when people engage in explicit self-evaluation/reflection to process to-be-remembered items, while the "incidental" SRE occurs when self-referential information (e.g., one's own name) is co-presented with to-be-remembered items but is irrelevant to a given task. Using a divided-attention paradigm, the present study examined potential differences in the attentional requirements of the evaluative and incidental SREs. During encoding, personality-trait words were presented simultaneously with the participant's own or a celebrity's name. The participants' task was either to evaluate whether each word described themselves/the celebrity (evaluative encoding) or to indicate the location of each word (incidental encoding), in the presence or absence of a secondary task. A subsequent recognition test with a remember/know procedure showed better overall recognition and enhanced episodic recollection for words presented with one's own name vs. another name, with this SRE being larger in the evaluative than incidental encoding condition. Critically, divided attention at encoding attenuated the magnitudes of both evaluative and incidental SREs to a comparable degree in overall recognition and episodic recollection. Individuals with schizophrenia (SZ) and auditory hallucinations (AHs) display a distorted sense of self and self-other boundaries. Alterations of activity in midline cortical structures such as the prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) during self-reference as well as in the superior temporal gyrus (STG) have been proposed as neuromarkers of SZ and AHs. In this randomized, participant-blinded, sham-controlled trial, 22 adults (18 males) with SZ spectrum disorders (SZ or schizoaffective disorder) and frequent medication-resistant AHs received one session of real-time fMRI neurofeedback (NFB) either from the STG (n = 11; experimental group) or motor cortex (n = 11; control group). During NFB, participants were instructed to upregulate their STG activity by attending to pre-recorded sentences spoken in their own voice and downregulate it by ignoring unfamiliar voices. Before and after NFB, participants completed a self-reference task where they evaluated if trait adjectives referred to themselves (self condition), Abraham Lincoln (other condition), or whether adjectives had a positive valence (semantic condition). FMRI activation analyses of self-reference task data tested between-group changes after NFB (self>semantic, post>pre-NFB, experimental>control). Analyses were pre-masked within a self-reference network. Activation analyses revealed significantly (p < 0.001) greater activation increase in the experimental, compared to the control group, after NFB within anterior regions of the self-reference network (mPFC, ACC, superior frontal cortex). STG-NFB was associated with activity increase in the mPFC, ACC, and superior frontal cortex during self-reference. Modulating the STG is associated with activation changes in other, not-directly targeted, regions subserving higher-level cognitive processes associated with self-referential processes and AHs psychopathology in SZ. Mental time travel (MTT), a cornerstone of human cognition, enables individuals to mentally project themselves into their past or future. It was shown that this self-projection may extend beyond the temporal domain to the spatial and social domains. What about higher cognitive domains? Twenty-eight participants underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) while self-projecting to different political, moral and temporal perspectives. For each domain, participants were asked to judge their relationship to various people (politicians, moral figures, personal acquaintances) from their actual or projected self-location. Findings showed slower, less accurate responses during self-projection across all domains. fMRI analysis revealed self-projection elicited brain activity at the precuneus, medial and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, temporoparietal junction and anterior insula, bilaterally and right lateral temporal cortex. Notably, 23.5% of active voxels responded to all three domains and 27% to two domains, suggesting a shared brain system for self-projection. For ordinality judgement (self-reference), 52.5% of active voxels corresponded to the temporal domain specifically. Self-projection activity overlapped mostly with the frontoparietal control network, followed by the default mode network, while self-reference showed a reversed pattern, demonstrating MTT's implication in spontaneous brain activity. MTT may thus be regarded as a 'mental-experiential travel', with self-projection as a domain-general construct and self-reference related mostly to time. In this paper, we report on how authors of academic writing in Chinese (AWC) refer to themselves as single authors in the area of language studies. We find that AWC writers rely on the 1st-person plural 我们 women "we," 3rd-person NPs such as 作者/笔者 zuozhe/bizhe "this author," and inanimate NPs such as 本文 benwen "this article/paper" for self-reference. Based on these findings and subsequent surveys of journal style guides and interviews of authors, we propose that (1) these self-referring expressions are a set of conventions; (2) the motivation for these conventions is modesty, a deep-routed value of Chinese society; and (3) these expressions serve as indexicals to the writers' identity of a modest scholar in the particular discursive context: the genre of academic writing. By so doing, our work links language use to social values, to identity studies, as well as to genre analysis, thus contributing to the literature in all these fields of investigation. We formulate and explore two basic axiomatic systems of type-free subjective probability. One of them explicates a notion of finitely additive probability. The other explicates a concept of infinitely additive probability. Self-representations guide and shape our thoughts and behaviour. People usually exhibit inherent biases in perception, attention, and memory to favour the information associated with themselves over that associated with others. The present study explored the phenomenon of self-bias in working memory (WM), specifically how self-referential processing impacts WM precision. Four precision-based experiments were conducted to assess the recall precision of self-referential items and items associated with other social agents. The findings revealed a robust self-prioritisation effect in WM precision, wherein self-referential items were recalled with greater precision than items associated with other social agents. Additionally, increased precision for self-referential items did not decrease the precision for simultaneously remembered items. This effect was limited by the total amount of WM resources and not influenced by a perceptual distractor. The inherent self-bias in WM can serve as a proxy to access the role self-representation in goal-oriented cognitive processing, providing a means of exploring the interaction between self-reference and high-level cognitive function. Background: Self‐related information is difficult to ignore and forget, which brings valuable implications for educational practice. Self‐referential encoding techniques involve integrating self‐referencing cues during the processing of learning material. However, the evidence base and effective implementation boundaries for these techniques in teaching and learning remain uncertain due to research variability. Aims: The present meta‐analysis aims to quantitatively synthesize the results from studies applying self‐referential encoding techniques in education. Methods: The analysis was based on data from 20 independent samples, including 1082 students from 13 primary studies identified through a systematic literature search. Results: Results from random effect models show that incorporating self‐referential encoding techniques improved learning (g =.40, 95% CI [.18,.62]). Subgroup analysis showed that the valence of learning material serves as a significant boundary condition for this strategy. The students' cohorts, types of learning materials, and research context did not moderate the effect sizes. Conclusions: Our results suggest that incorporating self‐referential encoding techniques on negative materials shows an aversive effect. Overall, there is a universal benefit to using self‐referential encoding techniques as an appropriate design guideline in educational contexts. Implications for teaching practice and future directions are discussed. Further studies are needed to investigate the effectiveness in more diverse educational and teaching situations. Purpose: Motivating users to self-disclose online is significant to the long-term development of social media. Therefore, research on emotional disclosure, a significant form of self-disclosure, is required. By developing a stimulus-organism-response model, this study aims to investigate the mechanisms by which the social media environment affects users' online emotional disclosure. Design/methodology/approach: This paper proposes two dimensions of social media environments, the online interpersonal environment (tie strength and network size) and the online information environment (self-reference). They are hypothesized to stimulate users' internal psychological needs (image management and emotional expression) which in turn will influence their emotional disclosure intentions. Using data from 489 users of WeChat Moments, the authors conduct partial least squares analysis to validate the research model. Findings: The findings show that users' intrinsic psychological needs are stimulated by social media environments, but network size is not correlated with the need for emotional expression. The user's need for emotional expression promotes both positive and negative emotional disclosure intentions. The need for image management has a positive impact on positive emotion disclosure intentions but has a negative impact on negative emotion disclosure intentions. Originality/value: This study contributes to the understanding of online emotional disclosure. It can also help social media managers create efficient plans to encourage users to create content. In this paper, I examine self-categorization practices as resources for the interactional organization of relative experiential entitlements. Locating the study in talk about child death, an explicitly moral domain of social life, this study utilizes 18 radio-based interactions from a South African talk-radio broadcaster. Using an ethnomethodological, conversation-analytic approach, I examine affective responses to reports of child deaths, demonstrating how these practices reproduce child death as a contemporary social and moral concern. My findings demonstrate how practices of, and variations in, self-reference and self-categorization are resources for managing relative rights and obligations, thereby reproducing common-sense knowledge about parents and children in contemporary South African society. This paper discusses a novel response to two closely related regress arguments from Bolzano’s Theory of Science and Carroll’s What the Tortoise Said to Achilles. Bolzano’s argument aims to refute the thesis that full grounds must include propositions involving notions such as entailment, grounding or lawhood which link the respective grounds to their groundee. This thesis is motivated, Bolzano’s argument is reconstructed, and a response based on self-referential linking propositions is developed and defended against objections concerning self-reference and Curry’s paradox. Jacques Derrida's scattered remarks on the ambiguous role examples play in the passage between the universal and the singular revolve around an often‐neglected point: any attempt to theorise exemplarity will itself be subject to the law it seeks to account for. This oversight limits scholarship on the subject, but may be amended by returning to the loci classici on exemplarity in Derrida's Glas, La vérité en peinture, Passions, and elsewhere. Moreover, in three texts published in the 1980s: La loi du genre, Préjugés and Psyché, Derrida emphasises how literature is particularly given to 'remark' its own status as literature and as such provides a privileged example of the problem of exemplarity. Our memories elicit, in us, both beliefs about what the external world was like in the past, and beliefs about what our own past experience of it was like in the past. What explains the power of memories to do that? I tackle this question by offering an account of the content of our memories. According to this account, our memories are 'token-reflexives', in that they represent their own causal origin. My main contention will be that our memories are able to provide us with evidence for the two types of beliefs due to the self-referential nature of their content. First, I will put forward a series of thought-experiments intended to raise several intuitions about the veridicality of memories. Next, I will introduce the view that memories are token-reflexives, and I will motivate it by pointing out that the view accommodates the relevant intuitions. And, then, I will return to the two types of beliefs prompted by our memories, and argue that conceiving memories as token-reflexives allows us to explain why memory has the power to elicit the two types of beliefs in us. There is a well-known gap between metamathematical theorems and their philosophical interpretations. Take Tarski's Theorem. According to its prevalent interpretation, the collection of all arithmetical truths is not arithmetically definable. However, the underlying metamathematical theorem merely establishes the arithmetical undefinability of a set of specific Gödel codes of certain artefactual entities, such as infix strings, which are true in the standard model. That is, as opposed to its philosophical reading, the metamathematical theorem is formulated (and proved) relative to a specific choice of the Gödel numbering and the notation system. A similar observation applies to Gödel's and Church's theorems, which are commonly taken to impose severe limitations on what can be proved and computed using the resources of certain formalisms. The philosophical force of these limitative results heavily relies on the belief that these theorems do not depend on contingencies regarding the underlying formalisation choices. The main aim of this paper is to provide metamathematical facts which support this belief. While employing a fixed notation system, I showed in previous work (Review of Symbolic Logic, 2021, 14(1):51–84) how to abstract away from the choice of the Gödel numbering. In the present paper, I extend this work by establishing versions of Tarski's, Gödel's and Church's theorems which are invariant regarding both the notation system and the numbering. Words and Objects and Words as Objects – Self-referential Structures in Inger Christensen’s alfabet and Herta Müller’s Collages in Schreibheft Vol. 74 Inger Christensen’s alfabet is one of the most formative contributions in Danish eco-poetry that also initiates a broad reception of Christensen’s œuvre in German literature. Besides the ecocritical tendencies the text establishes a self-referential dimension that deals with the relation between a human speaker, its speaking about ‘world’ and its reference. In this regard the text implicitly debates the verbal material and its (connotative) semantics that one has to use. This dimension of alfabet is one of the main linking points for a productive reception by Herta Müller. Especially her collages published in Schreibheft expose the materiality of linguistic signs and speech. In addition to this, the specific constitution of the collages which are made of newspapers and magazines shows that linguistic signs not only refer to a real reference but also (and mainly) to discourses and other prior communicative contexts.

The Liar Paradox is a classic argument that creates a contradiction by reflection on a sentence that attributes falsity to itself: ‘this sentence is false’. In our paper we will discuss the ways in which the Liar sentence (and its paradoxical argument) can be represented in first-order logic. The key to the representation is to use first-order logic to model a self-referential language. We will also discuss several related sentences, like the Liar cycles, the empirical versions of the Liar and the Truth teller sentences.

In On Female Body Experience: "Throwing Like A Girl" and Other Essays, Iris Marion Young examines the feminine modalities representing women in contemporary industrial and commercial society. She reveals the "root" of these modalities, which she refers to as the state of "self-reference." The main task of the present paper is to extend Young's understanding of femininity by arguing that this state of "self-reference" is rooted in the state of "reversibility." Such rootedness is essential to Young's concept of femininity, as it explains the constitution of the objectified state that represents feminine experience. It also justifies the three aspects of her definition of femininity: the non-essentiality of femininity, the structural conditions that constitute women's situations in a certain society, and women's lived experiences according to these situations. This paper is mainly inspired by Maurice Merleau-Ponty's existential and phenomenological approach, as represented in his Phenomenology of Perception and The Visible and the Invisible. It is also inspired by Edmund Husserl's concept of "double senses" as presented in his Thing and Space: Lectures of 1907. An exploration of Young's definition of "femininity" in relation to arguments related to essentialism is followed by a discussion of her argument that the modality of self-reference is the root of the other feminine modalities. The rest of the paper looks at how her understanding of femininity can be extended by presenting the concept of reversibility as the root of the formation of the state of self-reference and the other feminine modalities. Recently, a study by Dignath et al. (2023) reported on the intriguing finding that cognitive control is enhanced by information that primes self-referential processing. Here, we present an independently performed replication as a first step towards building a cumulative body of support for this finding. Specifically, we replicated their reduced Stroop effect for color-words that are presented together with the possessive pronoun 'my', as compared to color-words presented together with a definite or indefinite article. We did so in a Spanish cohort (generalizing from the German cohort in the original study), and while implementing several (theoretically irrelevant) changes to the design in order to showcase that this type of finding is not due to idiosyncratic features of the design. The theory of differential equations with deviating arguments is one of the important and significant branches of nonlinear analysis with numerous applications in most fields. Usually, equations of deviating arguments with deviation depend only on the time, however, when the deviation of the arguments depends upon both the state variable x and also the time t, is incredibly important theoretically and practically. Differential equations with state-dependent delays attract the interest of specialists since they widely arise from application models, such as the two-body problem of classical Electrodynamics, which also have many applications, especially in the class of problems that have past memories. In this paper, we study the existence of solutions of a self-reference (state dependence) quadratic integral equation of fractional orders of the form x(t) = x0 +I0,tαf1(t,x(x(ϕ(t)))).I0,tβ f2(t,x(x(ϕ)))) t∈[0,T], α, β ∈ (0, 1). The uniqueness of the solution will be studied. The continuous dependence of the unique solution on the initial data and the functions f1 and f2 will be proved. Some examples are included. In recent discussions on the possibilities and boundaries of science, the term ‘scientism’ has been used with multiple meanings. In this paper, this term is taken to refer to a strong epistemic thesis according to which scientific research is the only reliable source of knowledge. Strong epistemic scientism has been recently criticized from different points of view. A recurrent accusation is that the thesis is self-referentially incoherent. After giving an overview of the critical arguments and the answers given to them, I will try to point out that the debate concerning the correctness of scientism is based on a questionable background assumption about the role of higher-order justification. Cellular measurement is a crucial faculty in living systems, and exaptations are acknowledged as a significant source of evolutionary innovation. However, the possibility that the origin of biological order is predicated on an exaptation of the measurement of information from the abiotic realm has not been previously explored. To support this hypothesis, the existence of a universal holographic relational information space-time matrix is proposed as a scale-free unification of abiotic and biotic information systems. In this framework, information is a universal property representing the interactions between matter and energy that can be subject to observation. Since observers are also universally distributed, information can be deemed the fundamental fabric of the universe. The novel concept of compartmentalizing this universal N-space information matrix into separate N-space partitions as nodes of informational density defined by Markov blankets and boundaries is introduced, permitting their applicability to both abiotic and biotic systems. Based on these N-space partitions, abiotic systems can derive meaningful information from the conditional settlement of quantum entanglement asymmetries and coherences between separately bounded quantum informational reference frames sufficient to be construed as a form of measurement. These conditional relationships are the precursor of the reiterating nested architecture of the N-space-derived information fields that characterize life and account for biological order. Accordingly, biotic measurement and biological N-space partitioning are exaptations of preexisting information processes within abiotic systems. Abiotic and biotic states thereby reconcile as differing forms of measurement of fundamental universal information. The essential difference between abiotic and biotic states lies within the attributes of the specific observer/detectors, thereby clarifying several contentious aspects of self-referential consciousness. People process stimuli that have been arbitrarily associated with the self versus with a stranger preferentially, but congruence effects can modulate self-prioritization, as when the self is paired with, for example, symmetrical versus asymmetrical stimuli. In two experiments, we examined the interaction of self-prioritization with number magnitude when participants associated the self or a stranger with specific number symbols such as "2" presented as natural, negative, and ordinal number types (Experiment 1), or abstract numeric concepts, such as "larger than 5" (Experiment 2). Empathy and personal distance were also assessed. While self-prioritization emerged in both experiments, number type (natural, ordinal, and negative) had no effect on performance. Furthermore, correlations with empathy and personal distance did not emerge consistently. An interaction between number magnitude and self-assignment was observed for the magnitude comparison matching task (e.g., >5) (Experiment 2), but not in the specific number (e.g., "8") matching task (Experiment 1). The null interaction may reflect the fact that encoding symbol identity, but not number magnitude, was sufficient for the symbol-matching task. The order of numbers and self-associations also had an effect. In sum, this study is the first to show that self-prioritization emerges for symbolic numbers and can even occur with abstract categories, such as a range of numbers (e.g., >5). Furthermore, congruence effects between number concepts and labels (e.g., for the stranger, less is better) may also affect performance. However, this would appear to depend on the task context, such as whether numeric magnitude was needed to complete the task. Public Significance Statement: This study demonstrates self-prioritization when the self or a stranger is paired with symbolic numbers or more complex arithmetic concepts such as "larger than 5," highlighting the ubiquity of self-prioritization effects even in highly specialized processes like numeric cognition. This paper explores a formal model of autopoiesis as presented by Maturana, Uribe and Varela, and analyzes this model and its implications through the lens of the notions of eigenforms (fixed points) and the intricacies of Goedelian coding. The paper discusses the connection between autopoiesis and eigenforms and a variety of different perspectives and examples. The paper puts forward original philosophical reflections and generalizations about its various conclusions concerning specific examples, with the aim of contributing to a unified way of understanding (formal models of) living systems within the context of natural sciences, and to see the role of such systems and the formation of information from the point of view of analogs of biological construction. This paper provides a procedure which, from any Boolean system of sentences, outputs another Boolean system called the 'm-cycle unwinding' of the original Boolean system for any positive integer m. We prove that for all m > 1 , this procedure eliminates the direct self-reference in that the m-cycle unwinding of any Boolean system must be indirectly self-referential. More importantly, this procedure can preserve the primary periods of Boolean paradoxes: whenever m is relatively prime to all primary periods of a Boolean paradox, this paradox and its m-cycle unwinding have the same primary periods. An overview of the potential role of natural history museums in the socialisation of citizens under conditions of revolutionary worldview changes is presented, the meaning of which in Ukraine is the reinvention and final formation of the political nation and civil society. The unique set of means of information presentation and unobtrusive influence on visitors that a museum can offer for socialisation were analysed in the context of N. Lugman’s vision of society as a complex of cycles of self-reference and autopoiesis, which is realised through interpersonal and public communications. The power of the inertia of interpersonal communication is conclusive, both in the promotion of new ideas and in resistance to their influence. Therefore, reforms of society are impossible without systemic changes at this level, for which language serves as the main mediator. Language is identified as the basis for other ‘communication facilitators’: the means of storing and transmitting information and the ‘generalised exchange mediators’ that are increasingly the product of public communication. Analysing the modern changes that a museum must take into account, both in relations with the audience and in the content of messages, they are considered as a consequence of the finalisation or ‘change of sign’ in various-scale fluctuations of social and cultural dynamics, which embody fluctuations in the confrontation of certain oppositional principles. The most short-term of them in Ukraine turned out to be changes in European integration sentiments and the corresponding actions of the authorities. A fragment of the longest confrontation can be considered the transition of Humanity from the realities of state-caste societies, which are about six thousand years old, to the ideals of civil society, which is just beginning to form. For changes in the field of philosophy, the transition from the narratives of postmodernism to the foundations of metamodernism, which, in particular, includes the ‘new ontology’ of M. Hartman, has become significant. An overview of ideas and narratives that the National Museum of Natural History can share with the audience are offered. At the same time, the content of ideas and narratives is adjusted by the provisions of ontology in the interpretation of N. Hartman, and considerations regarding the possible forms of presenting information are oriented, first of all, to the understanding of the age-related features of its perception by J. Piaget.

In this paper, we propose an explication of the notion of emotional (pragmatic) truth due to defining performative propositions on non-Archimedean models ∗ D. In these models, it is possible to fix an appropriate behavioral scenario for each atomic performative proposition. Meanwhile, each performative proposition F (P) has an appropriate form of cognitive bias F changing the meaning of P , but this bias is the result or foundation for interaction with the outside world. Therefore, instead of the usual domain D of realization of atomic informative propositions P , which can be finite, we always have an infinite domain ∗ D of realization of performative propositions F (P) , where P is an informative proposition, distorted by some kind of cognitive biases F. Despite its worldwide popularity, Israel-originated Krav Maga is still remarkably unexplored. With regards to Krav Maga's global spread, this article focuses on the 'social career' of Krav Maga in Germany and enquires into the conditions for its success. Beginning in the 2000s, Krav Maga has rapidly resonated throughout Germany, nowadays showing a high degree of social connectivity and differentiation. Analysed through the lenses of social systems theory, Krav Maga's increasing popularity in Germany can to a significant degree be ascribed to communication - implemented in particular by highlighting relevant differences from other practices and systems of self-defence, and by its new correspondences with contemporary social and individual needs and expectations. As our analysis shows, Krav Maga, as an effective solution to the pressing problem of interpersonal violence, provides an answer to a problem that is at least partly contributed to by the system itself. Following initial analyses of the spread of Wing Chun in Germany, this case study makes a further contribution to an understanding of the socio-cultural evolution of self-defence systems in Germany. This paper investigates the conditions under which diagonal sentences can be taken to constitute paradigmatic cases of self-reference. We put forward well-motivated constraints on the diagonal operator and the coding apparatus which separate paradigmatic self-referential sentences, for instance obtained via Gödel's diagonalization method, from accidental diagonal sentences. The work is focused on Josip Osti's book On the Cross of Love, in which the author searches for answers to the universal question of the intertwining of love (as the awakening and celebration of life - eros) and dying, i.e. death (as the end - Thanatos). Through poetry, Osti talks about human nature, about the fact that we are all, no matter how different from each other, made of the same elements: mortality, but also a renewing love for life and other people. This is a book about a man as he should be, a book about diversity, which opposes uniformity, accepting (and coming to terms with) the World. Two key questions come to mind while reading this book: is Osti's center of love a refuge from loneliness, and is it possible for death to be the trigger of new love? Is love how one can reach a sublime state of happiness and fulfillment? We try to offer possible answers to these questions as well as show the types of love the book is about. And all those answers in our research are sublimated into one: the collection of poems On the Cross of Love appears as an Orphean parable about the inseparability of Eros and Thanatos.

I argue that the underlying criterion for the list of professions that fall under the Roman legal category of Infamia was not moral, as scholars have argued, but rather aesthetic-ontological. Revisiting Greco-Roman philosophy of mimesis and consulting Edwards's analysis of infames-elite role exchange as well as Hell's research into Roman "judicial theatre," I argue that infames were disqualified from legal testimony because their trades involved professional dramatic mimesis. They were thus conceived to be prone to sacrifice the specificity of events for pre-established aesthetic forms, which undermines the pursuit of truth in a court of law. However, far from excluding mimesis, the Roman court deployed what Hutcheon has called "mimesis of process," which, despite being self-referential, encouraged the depiction of the pure, naked event--what Blanchot (following Levinas) has termed il y a -- prior to being reduced to pre-established aesthetic, moral, epistemological, and even linguistic forms and ideals. This paper is a response to Haze's brief argument for the falsity of the theory that instantial terms refer arbitrarily, proposed by Breckenridge and Magidor in 2012. In this paper, I characterise instantial terms and outline the theory of arbitrary reference; then I reconstruct Haze's argument and contend that it fails in its purpose. Haze's argument is supposed to be a reductio ad absurdum: according to Haze, it proves that a contradiction follows from the most basic tenets of the theory of arbitrary reference. I will argue, however, that the contradiction in question follows not from these tenets, but from the surreptitious use that Haze makes of a self-referential expression. I conclude, consequently, that Haze's argument is nothing more than an illustration of the well-known fact that self-referential expressions produce paradoxical results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper we examine various requirements on the formalisation choices under which self-reference can be adequately formalised in arithmetic. In particular, we study self-referential numberings, which immediately provide a strong notion of self-reference even for expressively weak languages. The results of this paper suggest that the question whether truly self-referential reasoning can be formalised in arithmetic is more sensitive to the underlying coding apparatus than usually believed. Background: The default mode network (DMN) is a large-scale brain network tightly correlated with self and self-referential processing, activated by intrinsic tasks and deactivated by externally-directed tasks. Objective: In this study, we aim to investigate the novel approach of default mode activation during progressive muscle relaxation and examine whether differential activation patterns result from the movement of different body parts. Methods: We employed neuroimaging to investigate DMN activity during simple body movements, while performing progressive muscle relaxation. We focused on differentiating the neural response between facial movements and movements of other body parts. Results: Our results show that the movement of different body parts led to deactivation in several DMN nodes, namely the temporal poles, hippocampus, medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), and posterior cingulate cortex. However, facial movement induced an inverted and selective positive BOLD pattern in some of these areas precisely. Moreover, areas in the temporal poles selective for face movement showed functional connectivity not only with the hippocampus and mPFC but also with the nucleus accumbens. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that both conceptual and embodied self-related processes, including body movements during progressive muscle relaxation, may be mapped onto shared brain networks. This could enhance our understanding of how practices like PMR influence DMN activity and potentially offer insights to inform therapeutic strategies that rely on mindful body movements. Igor Stravinsky’s late style is usually considered in terms of the works’ structure. Following Joseph N. Straus, this article attempts to highlight expressive, semantic and self-referential dimensions in Stravinsky’s late compositions. These dimensions emerge there with particular clarity and partly contradict the usual assessments of this music as abstract and constructivist; as such, they also challenge the composer’s own statements.

The article presents a unified method for diagnosis and treatment various semantic pathologies (Buridan’s sophisms, Liar-like sentences, etc.). The basis of this approach is a modified version of prosententialism, in which the terms ʽtrueʼ and ʽfalseʼ are considered as markers for the types of relations between truth values of pathological sentences. Unlike Russell-Tarski hierarchical approach, it pays tribute to the intuitive claim of the semantic universality of natural languages (their ability to express own semantics).
