We study the constraints imposed on the electromagnetic response of general media by microcausality (commutators of local fields vanish outside the light cone) and positivity of the imaginary parts (the medium can only absorb energy from the external field). The equations of motion for the average electromagnetic field in a medium -- the macroscopic Maxwell equations -- can be derived from the in-in effective action and the effect of the medium is encoded in the electric and magnetic permeabilities $\varepsilon(\omega,|\boldsymbol{k}|)$ and $\mu(\omega,|\boldsymbol{k}|)$. Microcausality implies analyticity of the retarded Green's functions when the imaginary part of the $4$-vector $(\omega,\boldsymbol{k})$ lies in forward light cone. With appropriate assumptions about the behavior of the medium at high frequencies one derives dispersion relations, originally studied by Leontovich. In the case of dielectrics these relations, combined with the positivity of the imaginary parts, imply bounds on the low-energy values of the response, $\varepsilon(0,0)$ and $\mu(0,0)$. In particular the quantities $\varepsilon(0,0)-1$ and $\varepsilon(0,0) - 1/\mu(0,0)$ are constrained to be positive and equal to integrals over the imaginary parts of the response. We study the $S$-matrix of Goldstones in the renormalizable theory of a $U(1)$ complex scalar at finite charge, i.e. in a state that breaks Lorentz invariance. The theory is weakly coupled so that this $S$-matrix exists at all energies. Unlike the Lorentz invariant case, the resulting $S$-matrix is not analytic in the exchanged (complexified) four-momentum. The non-analyticities stem from the LSZ reduction formula, as a consequence of the energy-dependent mixing between the radial and Goldstone modes., Comment: 18+11 pages

We study mean convex mean curvature flow $M_s$ of local spacelike graphs in the flat slicing of de Sitter space. We show that if the initial slice is of non-negative time and is graphical over a large enough ball, and if $M_s$ is of bounded mean curvature, then as $s$ goes to infinity, $M_s$ becomes graphical in expanding balls, over which the gradient function converges to $1$. In particular, if $p_s$ is the point lying over the center of the domain ball in $M_s$, then $(M_s,p_s)$ converges smoothly to the flat slicing of de Sitter space. This has some relation to the mean curvature flow approach to the cosmic no hair conjecture.

We show that it is possible to directly measure the formation time of galaxies using large-scale structure. In particular, we show that the large-scale distribution of galaxies is sensitive to whether galaxies form over a narrow period of time before their observed times, or are formed over a time scale on the order of the age of the Universe. After the successful full-shape analyses of BOSS data using the Effective Field Theory of Large-Scale Structure, we investigate what upcoming galaxy surveys might achieve. We introduce a ``perturbativity prior" that ensures that loop terms are as large as theoretically expected, which is effective in the case of a large number of EFT parameters. After validating our technique by comparison with already-performed analyses of BOSS data, we provide Fisher forecasts using the one-loop prediction for power spectrum and bispectrum for two benchmark surveys: DESI and MegaMapper. We find overall great improvements on the cosmological parameters. In particular, we find that MegaMapper (DESI) should obtain at least a 12$\sigma$ ($2\sigma$) evidence for non-vanishing neutrino masses, bound the curvature $\Omega_k$ to 0.0012 (0.012), and primordial inflationary non-Gaussianities as follows: $f_{\text{NL}}^{\text{loc.}}$ to $\pm 0.26$ (3.3), $f_{\text{NL}}^{\text{eq.}}$ to $\pm16$ (92), $f_{\text{NL}}^{\text{orth.}}$ to $\pm 4.2$ (27). Such measurements would provide much insight on the theory of Inflation. We develop a new way to analytically calculate loop integrals in the Effective Field Theory of Large Scale-Structure. Previous available methods show severe limitations beyond the one-loop power spectrum due to analytical challenges and computational and memory costs. Our new method is based on fitting the linear power spectrum with cosmology-independent functions that resemble integer powers of quantum field theory massive propagators with complex masses. A remarkable small number of them is sufficient to reach enough accuracy. Similarly to former approaches, the cosmology dependence is encoded in the coordinate vector of the expansion of the linear power spectrum in our basis. We first produce cosmology-independent tensors where each entry is the loop integral evaluated on a given combination of basis vectors. For each cosmology, the evaluation of a loop integral amounts to contracting this tensor with the coordinate vector of the linear power spectrum. The 3-dimensional loop integrals for our basis functions can be evaluated using techniques familiar to particle physics, such as recursion relations and Feynman parametrization. We apply our formalism to evaluate the one-loop bispectrum of galaxies in redshift space. The final analytical expressions are quite simple and can be evaluated with little computational and memory cost. We show that the same expressions resolve the integration of all one-loop $N$-point function in the EFTofLSS. We derive the kernels and the Effective Field Theory of Large-Scale Structure counterterms for the one-loop bispectrum of dark matter and of biased tracers in real and redshift space. This requires the expansion of biased tracers up to fourth order in fluctuations. In the process, we encounter several subtleties related to renormalization. One is the fact that, in renormalizing the momentum, a local counterterm contributes non-locally. A second subtlety is related to the renormalization of local products of the velocity fields, which need to be expressed in terms of the renormalized velocity in order to preserve Galilean symmetry. We check that the counterterms we identify are necessary and sufficient to renormalize the one-loop bispectrum at leading and subleading order in the derivative expansion. We derive positivity bounds on EFT coefficients in theories where boosts are spontaneously broken. We employ the analytic properties of the retarded Green's function of conserved currents (or of the stress-energy tensor) and assume the theory becomes conformal in the UV. The method is general and applicable to both cosmology and condensed matter systems. As a concrete example, we look at the EFT of conformal superfluids which describes the universal low-energy dynamics of CFT's at large chemical potential and we derive inequalities on the coefficients of the operators, in three dimensions, at NLO and NNLO., Comment: 31+14 pages

We analyze the BOSS power spectrum monopole and quadrupole, and the bispectrum monopole and quadrupole data, using the predictions from the Effective Field Theory of Large-Scale Structure (EFTofLSS). Specifically, we use the one loop prediction for the power spectrum and the bispectrum monopole, and the tree level for the bispectrum quadrupole. After validating our pipeline against numerical simulations as well as checking for several internal consistencies, we apply it to the observational data. We find that analyzing the bispectrum monopole to higher wavenumbers thanks to the one-loop prediction, as well as the addition of the tree-level quadrupole, significantly reduces the error bars with respect to our original analysis of the power spectrum at one loop and bispectrum monopole at tree level. After fixing the spectral tilt to Planck preferred value and using a Big Bang Nucleosynthesis prior, we measure $\sigma_8=0.794\pm 0.037$, $h = 0.692\pm 0.011$, and $\Omega_m = 0.311\pm 0.010$ to about $4.7\%$, $1.6\%$, and $3.2\%$, at $68\%$ CL, respectively. This represents an error bar reduction with respect to the power spectrum-only analysis of about $30\%$, $18\%$, and $13\%$ respectively. Remarkably, the results are compatible with the ones obtained with a power-spectrum-only analysis, showing the power of the EFTofLSS in simultaneously predicting several observables. We analyze the power spectrum and the bispectrum of BOSS galaxy-clustering data using the prediction from the Effective Field Theory of Large-Scale Structure at one-loop order for $\textit{both}$ the power spectrum $\textit{and}$ the bispectrum. With $\Lambda$CDM parameters fixed to Planck preferred values, we set limits on three templates of non-Gaussianities predicted by many inflationary models: the equilateral, the orthogonal, and the local shapes. After validating our analysis against simulations, we find $f_{\rm NL}^{\rm equil.}= 245 \pm 293\, , f_{\rm NL}^{\rm orth.}= -60 \pm 72\, , f_{\rm NL}^{\rm loc.}= 7 \pm 31$, at $68\%$ confidence level. We study the onset of inflation in 3+1 dimensional cosmologies with an inflationary potential $U$ satisfying $0 < \Lambda_1 \leq U \leq \Lambda_2$, matter satisfying the dominant and strong energy conditions, and with spatial slices that can be foliated by 2-dimensional surfaces that are orbits under an isometry group. Assuming an initial Cauchy slice with positive mean curvature everywhere, we show, via mean curvature flow, that there exists a family of spatial slices parameterized by $\lambda$, whose volume grows between the flat slicings in de Sitter spaces with cosmological constants $\Lambda_1$ and $\Lambda_2$. In particular, inflationary expansion indeed occurs in this setting with inhomogeneous initial conditions. Finally, we apply this "inflationary time coordinate" $\lambda$ to study asymptotics of the variation in the metric, the average stress-energy tensor, and the dynamics of an inflaton field on a spatial slice., Comment: 29 pages, 2 figures

After calibrating the predictions of the Effective Field Theory of Large-Scale Structure against several sets of simulations, as well as implementing a new method to assert the scale cut of the theory without the use of any simulation, we analyze the Full Shape of the BOSS Correlation Function. Imposing a prior from Big Bang Nucleosynthesis on the baryon density, we are able to measure all the parameters in $\Lambda$CDM + massive neutrinos in normal hierarchy, except for the total neutrino mass, which is just bounded. When combining the BOSS Full Shape with the Baryon Acoustic Oscillation measurements from BOSS, 6DF/MGS and eBOSS, we determine the present day Hubble constant, $H_0$, the present matter fraction, $\Omega_m$, the amplitude of the primordial power spectrum, $A_s$, and the tilt of the primordial power spectrum, $n_s$, to $1.4 \%, 4.5 \%, 23.5\%$ and $7.6\%$ precision, respectively, at $68 \%$-confidence level, finding $H_0=68.19 \pm 0.99$ (km/s)/Mpc, $\Omega_m=0.309\pm 0.014$, $\ln (10^{10}A_{s })=3.12^{+0.21}_{-0.26}$ and $n_s=0.963^{+0.062}_{-0.085}$, and we bound the total neutrino mass to $0.87 \, \textrm{eV}$ at $95 \%$-confidence level. These constraints are fully consistent with Planck results and the ones obtained from BOSS power spectrum analysis. Former analyses of the BOSS data using the Effective Field Theory of Large-Scale Structure (EFTofLSS) have measured that the largest counterterms are the redshift-space distortion ones. This allows us to adjust the power-counting rules of the theory, and to explicitly identify that the leading next-order terms have a specific dependence on the cosine of the angle between the line-of-sight and the wavenumber of the observable, $\mu$. Such a specific $\mu$-dependence allows us to construct a linear combination of the data multipoles, $\slashed{P}$, where these contributions are effectively projected out, so that EFTofLSS predictions for $\slashed{P}$ have a much smaller theoretical error and so a much higher $k$-reach. The remaining data are organized in wedges in $\mu$ space, have a $\mu$-dependent $k$-reach because they are not equally affected by the leading next-order contributions, and therefore can have a higher $k$-reach than the multipoles. Furthermore, by explicitly including the highest next-order terms, we define a `one-loop+' procedure, where the wedges have even higher $k$-reach. We study the effectiveness of these two procedures on several sets of simulations and on the BOSS data. The resulting analysis has identical computational cost as the multipole-based one, but leads to an improvement on the determination of some of the cosmological parameters that ranges from $10\%$ to $100\%$, depending on the survey properties., Comment: 26 pages, 6 figures

We apply the Effective Field Theory of Large-Scale Structure (EFTofLSS) to analyze cosmological models with clustering quintessence, which allows us to consistently describe the parameter region in which the quintessence equation of state $w < - 1$. First, we extend the description of biased tracers in redshift space to the presence of clustering quintessence, and compute the one-loop power spectrum. We solve the EFTofLSS equations using the exact time dependence, which is relevant to obtain unbiased constraints. Then, fitting the full shape of BOSS pre-reconstructed power spectrum measurements, the BOSS post-reconstruction BAO measurements, BAO measurements from 6DF/MGS and eBOSS, the Supernovae from Pantheon, and a prior from BBN, we bound the clustering quintessence equation of state parameter $w=-1.011_{-0.048}^{+0.053}$ at $68\%$ C.L.. Further combining with Planck, we obtain $w=-1.028_{-0.030}^{+0.037}$ at $68\%$ C.L.. We also obtain constraints on smooth quintessence, in the physical regime $w \geq -1$: combining all datasets, we get $-1\leq w < - 0.979$ at $68\%$ C.L.. Upcoming Large-Scale Structure surveys will likely become the next leading sources of cosmological information, making it crucial to have a precise understanding of the influence of baryons on cosmological observables. The Effective Field Theory of Large-Scale Structure (EFTofLSS) provides a consistent way to predict the clustering of dark matter and baryons on large scales, where their leading corrections in perturbation theory are given by a simple and calculable functional form even after the onset of baryonic processes. In this paper, we extend the two-fluid-like system up to two-loop order in perturbation theory. Along the way, we show that a new linear counterterm proportional to the relative velocity of the fluids could generically be present, but we show that its effects are expected to be small in our universe. Regardless, we show how to consistently perform perturbation theory in the presence of this new term. We find that the EFTofLSS at two-loop order can accurately account for the details of baryonic processes on large scales. We compare our results to a hydrodynamical $N$-body simulation at many redshifts and find that the counterterms associated with the leading corrections to dark matter and baryons start to differ between redshifts $z \approx 3$ and $z \approx 2$, signaling the onset of star-formation physics. We then use these fits to compute the lensing power spectrum, show that the understanding of baryonic processes will be important for analyzing CMB-S4 data, and show that the two-loop EFTofLSS accurately captures these effects for $\ell \lesssim 2000$. The disagreement between direct late-time measurements of the Hubble constant from the SH0ES collaboration, and early-universe measurements based on the $\Lambda$CDM model from the Planck collaboration might, at least in principle, be explained by new physics in the early universe. Recently, the application of the Effective Field Theory of Large-Scale Structure to the full shape of the power spectrum of the SDSS/BOSS data has revealed a new, rather powerful, way to measure the Hubble constant and the other cosmological parameters from Large-Scale Structure surveys. In light of this, we analyze two models for early universe physics, Early Dark Energy and Rock 'n' Roll, that were designed to significantly ameliorate the Hubble tension. Upon including the information from the full shape to the Planck, BAO, and Supernovae measurements, we find that the degeneracies in the cosmological parameters that were introduced by these models are well broken by the data, so that these two models do not significantly ameliorate the tension., Comment: 15+12 pages, 7 figures. v2: Minor corrections, references added. v3: Extended appendices

We study the effect of the Einstein - de Sitter (EdS) approximation on the one-loop power spectrum of galaxies in redshift space in the Effective Field Theory of Large-Scale Structure. The dark matter density perturbations and velocity divergence are treated with exact time dependence. Splitting the density perturbation into its different temporal evolutions naturally gives rise to an irreducible basis of biases. While, as in the EdS approximation, at each time this basis spans a seven-dimensional space, this space is a slightly different one, and the difference is captured by a single calculable time- and $\vec k$-dependent function. We then compute the redshift-space galaxy one-loop power spectrum with the EdS approximation ($P^{\text{EdS-approx}}$) and without ($P^{\text{Exact}}$). For the monopole we find $P_{\text{0}}^{\text{Exact}}/P_{\text{0}}^{\text{EdS-approx}}\sim 1.003$ and for the quadrupole $P_{\text{2}}^{\text{Exact}}/P_{\text{2}}^{\text{EdS-approx}}\sim 1.007$ at $z=0.57$, and sharply increasing at lower redshifts. Finally, we show that a substantial fraction of the effect remains even after allowing the bias coefficients to shift within a physically allowed range. This suggests that the EdS approximation can only fit the data to a level of precision that is roughly comparable to the precision of the next generation of cosmological surveys. Furthermore, we find that implementing the exact time dependence formalism is not demanding and is easily applicable to data. We study, using Mean Curvature Flow methods, 3+1 dimensional cosmologies with a positive cosmological constant, matter satisfying the dominant and the strong energy conditions, and with spatial slices that can be foliated by 2-dimensional surfaces that are the closed orbits of a symmetry group. If these surfaces have non-positive Euler characteristic (or in the case of 2-spheres, if the initial 2-spheres are large enough) and also if the initial spatial slice is expanding everywhere, then we prove that asymptotically the spacetime becomes physically indistinguishable from de Sitter space on arbitrarily large regions of spacetime. An accurate theoretical template for the galaxy power spectrum is a key for the success of ongoing and future spectroscopic surveys. We examine to what extent the Effective Field Theory of Large Scale Structure is able to provide such a template and correctly estimate cosmological parameters. To that end, we initiate a blinded challenge to infer cosmological parameters from the redshift-space power spectrum of high-resolution mock catalogs mimicking the BOSS galaxy sample but covering a hundred times larger cumulative volume. This gigantic simulation volume allows us to separate systematic bias due to theoretical modeling from the statistical error due to sample variance. The challenge task was to measure three unknown input parameters used in the simulation: the Hubble constant, the matter density fraction, and the clustering amplitude. We present analyses done by two independent teams, who have fitted the mock simulation data generated by yet another independent group. This allows us to avoid any confirmation bias by analyzers and pin down possible tuning of the specific EFT implementations. We apply the Effective Field Theory of Large-Scale Structure to analyze the $w$CDM cosmological model. By using the full shape of the power spectrum and the BAO post-reconstruction measurements from BOSS, the Supernovae from Pantheon, and a prior from BBN, we set the competitive CMB-independent limit $w=-1.046_{-0.052}^{+0.055}$ at $68\%$ C.L.. After adding the Planck CMB data, we find $w=-1.023_{-0.030}^{+0.033}$ at $68\%$ C.L.. Gravitational-wave observations of coalescing binary systems allow for novel tests of the strong-field regime of gravity. Using data from the Gravitational Wave Open Science Center (GWOSC) of the LIGO and Virgo detectors, we place the first constraints on an effective field-theory based extension of General Relativity in which only higher-order curvature terms are added to the Einstein-Hilbert action. We construct gravitational-wave templates describing the quasi-circular, adiabatic inspiral phase of binary black holes in this extended theory of gravity. Then, after explaining how to properly take into account the region of validity of the effective field theory when performing tests of General Relativity, we perform Bayesian model selection using the two lowest-mass binary black-hole events reported to date by LIGO and Virgo -- GW151226 and GW170608 -- and constrain this theory with respect to General Relativity. We find that these data disfavors the appearance of new physics on distance scales around $\sim 150$ km. We resolve the issue of infrared divergences present in theories of light scalar fields on de Sitter space., Comment: 95 pages, 12 figures

The precision of the cosmological data allows us to accurately approximate the predictions for cosmological observables by Taylor expanding up to a low order the dependence on the cosmological parameters around a reference cosmology. By applying this observation to the redshift-space one-loop galaxy power spectrum of the Effective Field Theory of Large-Scale Structure, we analyze the BOSS DR12 data by scanning over all the parameters of $\Lambda$CDM cosmology with massive neutrinos. We impose several sets of priors, the widest of which is just a Big Bang Nucleosynthesis prior on the current fractional energy density of baryons, $\Omega_b h^2$, and a bound on the sum of neutrino masses to be less than 0.9 eV. In this case we measure the primordial amplitude of the power spectrum, $A_s$, the abundance of matter, $\Omega_m$, the Hubble parameter, $H_0$, and the tilt of the primordial power spectrum, $n_s$, to about $19\%$, $5.7\%$, $2.2\%$ and $7.3\%$ respectively, obtaining $\ln ( 10^{10} A_s) =2.91\pm 0.19$, $\Omega_m=0.314\pm 0.018$, $H_0=68.7\pm 1.5$ km/(s Mpc) and $n_s=0.979\pm 0.071$ at $68\%$ confidence level. The Effective Field Theory of Large-Scale Structure (EFTofLSS) is a formalism that allows us to predict the clustering of Cosmological Large-Scale Structure in the mildly non-linear regime in an accurate and reliable way. After validating our technique against several sets of numerical simulations, we perform the analysis for the cosmological parameters of the DR12 BOSS data. We assume $\Lambda$CDM, a fixed value of the baryon/dark-matter ratio, $\Omega_b/\Omega_c$, and of the tilt of the primordial power spectrum, $n_s$, and no significant input from numerical simulations. By using the one-loop power spectrum multipoles, we measure the primordial amplitude of the power spectrum, $A_s$, the abundance of matter, $\Omega_m$, and the Hubble parameter, $H_0$, to about $13\%$, $3.2\%$ and $3.2\%$ respectively, obtaining $\ln(10^{10}As)=2.72\pm 0.13$, $\Omega_m=0.309\pm 0.010$, $H_0=68.5\pm 2.2$ km/(s Mpc) at 68\% confidence level. If we then add a CMB prior on the sound horizon, the error bar on $H_0$ is reduced to $1.6\%$. These results are a substantial qualitative and quantitative improvement with respect to former analyses, and suggest that the EFTofLSS is a powerful instrument to extract cosmological information from Large-Scale Structure., Comment: 78 pages, 27 figures

The expansion of the Universe is understood to have accelerated during two epochs: in its very first moments during a period of Inflation and much more recently, at $z < 1$, when Dark Energy is hypothesized to drive cosmic acceleration. The undiscovered mechanisms behind these two epochs represent some of the most important open problems in fundamental physics. The large cosmological volume at $2 < z < 5$, together with the ability to efficiently target high-$z$ galaxies with known techniques, enables large gains in the study of Inflation and Dark Energy. A future spectroscopic survey can test the Gaussianity of the initial conditions up to a factor of ~50 better than our current bounds, crossing the crucial theoretical threshold of $\sigma(f_{NL}^{\rm local})$ of order unity that separates single field and multi-field models. The hot dense environment of the early universe is known to have produced large numbers of baryons, photons, and neutrinos. These extreme conditions may have also produced other long-lived species, including new light particles (such as axions or sterile neutrinos) or gravitational waves. The gravitational effects of any such light relics can be observed through their unique imprint in the cosmic microwave background (CMB), the large-scale structure, and the primordial light element abundances, and are important in determining the initial conditions of the universe. We argue that future cosmological observations, in particular improved maps of the CMB on small angular scales, can be orders of magnitude more sensitive for probing the thermal history of the early universe than current experiments. These observations offer a unique and broad discovery space for new physics in the dark sector and beyond, even when its effects would not be visible in terrestrial experiments or in astrophysical environments. Astrophysical observations currently provide the only robust, empirical measurements of dark matter. In the coming decade, astrophysical observations will guide other experimental efforts, while simultaneously probing unique regions of dark matter parameter space. This white paper summarizes astrophysical observations that can constrain the fundamental physics of dark matter in the era of LSST. We describe how astrophysical observations will inform our understanding of the fundamental properties of dark matter, such as particle mass, self-interaction strength, non-gravitational interactions with the Standard Model, and compact object abundances. Our current understanding of the Universe is established through the pristine measurements of structure in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and the distribution and shapes of galaxies tracing the large scale structure (LSS) of the Universe. One key ingredient that underlies cosmological observables is that the field that sources the observed structure is assumed to be initially Gaussian with high precision. Nevertheless, a minimal deviation from Gaussianityis perhaps the most robust theoretical prediction of models that explain the observed Universe; itis necessarily present even in the simplest scenarios. We study, using Mean Curvature Flow methods, 2+1 dimensional cosmologies with a positive cosmological constant and matter satisfying the dominant and the strong energy conditions. If the spatial slices are compact with non-positive Euler characteristic and are initially expanding everywhere, then we prove that the spatial slices reach infinite volume, asymptotically converge on average to de Sitter and they become, almost everywhere, physically indistinguishable from de Sitter. We develop an analytic method for implementing the IR-resummation of arXiv:1404.5954, which allows one to correctly and consistently describe the imprint of baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) on statistical observables in large-scale structure. We show that the final IR-resummed correlation function can be computed analytically without relying on numerical integration, thus allowing for an efficient and accurate use of these predictions on real data in cosmological parameter fitting. In this work we focus on the one-loop correlation function and the BAO peak. We show that, compared with the standard numerical integration method of IR-resummation, the new method is accurate to better than 0.2 %, and is quite easily improvable. We also give an approximate resummation scheme which is based on using the linear displacements of a fixed fiducial cosmology, which when combined with the method described above, is about six times faster than the standard numerical integration. Effective field theory methods suggest that some rather-general extensions of General Relativity include, or are mimicked by, certain higher-order curvature corrections, with coupling constants expected to be small but otherwise arbitrary. Thus, the tantalizing prospect to test the fundamental nature of gravity with gravitational-wave observations, in a systematic way, emerges naturally. Here, we build black hole solutions in such a framework and study their main properties. Once rotation is included, we find the first purely gravitational example of geometries without $\mathbb{Z}_2$-symmetry. Despite the higher-order operators of the theory, we show that linearized fluctuations of such geometries obey second-order differential equations. We find nonzero tidal Love numbers. We study and compute the quasinormal modes of such geometries. The existence of light particles with spin during inflation is prohibited by the Higuchi bound. This conclusion can be evaded if one considers states with a sizeable coupling with the inflaton foliation, since this breaks the de Sitter isometries. The action for these states can be constructed within the Effective Field Theory of Inflation, or using a CCWZ procedure. Light particles with spin have prescribed couplings with soft inflaton perturbations, which are encoded in consistency relations. We study the phenomenology of light states with spin 2. These mix with the graviton changing the tensor power spectrum and can lead to sizeable tensor non-Gaussianities. We compute the tree-level bispectrum of dark matter in the presence of massive neutrinos in the mildly non-linear regime in the context of the effective field theory of large-scale structure (EFTofLSS). For neutrinos, whose typical free streaming wavenumber ($k_{\rm fs}$) is longer than the non-linear scale ($k_{\mathrm{NL}}$), we solve a Boltzmann equation coupled to the effective fluid equation for dark matter. We solve perturbatively the coupled system by expanding in powers of the neutrino density fraction ($f_{\nu}$) and the ratio of the wavenumber of interest over the non-linear scale ($k/k_{\mathrm{NL}}$) and add suitable counterterms to remove the dependence from short distance physics. For equilateral configurations, we find that the total-matter tree-level bispectrum is approximately $16f_{\nu}$ times the dark matter one on short scales ($k > k_{\rm fs}$). The largest contribution stems from the back-reaction of massive neutrinos on the dark matter growth factor. The Effective Field Theory of Large-Scale Structure (EFTofLSS) provides a consistent perturbative framework for describing the statistical distribution of cosmological large-scale structure. In a previous EFTofLSS calculation that involved the one-loop power spectra and tree-level bispectra, it was shown that the $k$-reach of the prediction for biased tracers is comparable for all investigated masses if suitable higher-derivative biases, which are less suppressed for more massive tracers, are added. However, it is possible that the non-linear biases grow faster with tracer mass than the linear bias, implying that loop contributions could be the leading correction to the bispectra. To check this, we include the one-loop contributions in a fit to numerical data in the limit of strongly enhanced higher-order biases. We show that the resulting one-loop power spectra and higher-derivative plus leading one-loop bispectra fit the two- and three-point functions respectively up to $k\simeq 0.19\ h\ \rm{Mpc}^{-1}$ and $k\simeq 0.14\ h\ \rm{Mpc}^{-1}$ at the percent level. We find that the higher-order bias coefficients are not strongly enhanced, and we argue that the gain in perturbative reach due to the leading one-loop contributions to the bispectra is relatively small. Thus, we conclude that higher-derivative biases provide the leading correction to the bispectra for tracers of a very wide range of masses., Comment: 23 pages, 5 figures

We propose a simplification for the IR-resummation scheme of Senatore and Zaldarriaga, and also include its next-to-leading order corrections coming from the tree-level three-point function of the long displacement field. First we show that the new simplified formula shares the same properties of the resummation of Senatore and Zaldarriaga. In Fourier space, the IR-resummed power spectrum has no residual wiggles and the two-loop calculation matches the non-linear power spectrum of the Dark Sky simulation at $z=0$ up to $k\simeq0.34\,h\,\text{Mpc}^{-1}$ within cosmic variance. Then, we find that the additional subleading terms (although parametrically infrared-enhanced) modify the leading-order IR-resummed correlation function only in a marginal way, implying that the IR-resummation scheme can robustly predict the shape of the BAO peak., Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures

We develop a formalism to analytically describe the clustering of matter in the mildly non-linear regime in the presence of massive neutrinos. Neutrinos, whose free streaming wavenumber ($k_{\rm fs}$) is typically longer than the non-linear scale ($k_{\rm NL}$) are described by a Boltzmann equation coupled to the effective fluid-like equations that describe dark matter. We solve the equations expanding in the neutrino density fraction $(f_\nu)$ and in $k/ k_{\rm NL}$, and add suitable counterterms to renormalize the theory. This allows us to describe the contribution of short distances to long-distance observables. Equivalently, we construct an effective Boltzmann equation where we add additional terms whose coefficients renormalize the contribution from short-distance physics. We argue that neutrinos with $k_{\rm fs}\gtrsim k_{\rm NL}$ require an additional counterterm similar to the speed of sound ($c_s$) for dark matter. We compute the one-loop total-matter power spectrum, and find that it is roughly equal to $16f_\nu$ times the dark matter one for $k$'s larger that the typical $k_{\rm fs}$. It is about half of that for smaller $k$'s. The leading contribution results from the back-reaction of the neutrinos on the dynamics of the dark matter. The recent direct observation of gravitational waves (GW) from merging black holes opens up the possibility of exploring the theory of gravity in the strong regime at an unprecedented level. It is therefore interesting to explore which extensions to General Relativity (GR) could be detected. We construct an Effective Field Theory (EFT) satisfying the following requirements. It is testable with GW observations; it is consistent with other experiments, including short distance tests of GR; it agrees with widely accepted principles of physics, such as locality, causality and unitarity; and it does not involve new light degrees of freedom. The most general theory satisfying these requirements corresponds to adding to the GR Lagrangian operators constructed out of powers of the Riemann tensor, suppressed by a scale comparable to the curvature of the observed merging binaries. Because large-scale structure surveys may very well be the next leading sources of cosmological information, it is important to have a precise understanding of the cosmological observables; for this reason, the Effective Field Theory of Large-Scale Structure (EFTofLSS) was developed. So far, most results in the EFTofLSS have used the so-called Einstein-de Sitter approximation, an approximation of the time dependence which is known to be accurate to better than one percent. However, in order to reach even higher accuracy, the full time dependence must be used. The computation with exact time dependence is sensitive to both infrared (IR) and ultraviolet (UV) effects in the loop integrands, and while these effects must cancel because of diffeomorphism invariance, they make numerical computation much less efficient. We provide a formulation of the one-loop, equal-time exact-time-dependence power spectrum of density perturbations which is manifestly free of these spurious IR and UV divergences at the level of the integrand. We extend our results to the total matter mode with clustering quintessence, show that IR and UV divergences cancel, and provide the associated IR- and UV-safe integrand. This also establishes that the consistency conditions are satisfied in this system. In the next few years, we are going to probe the low-redshift universe with unprecedented accuracy. Among the various fruits that this will bear, it will greatly improve our knowledge of the dynamics of dark energy, though for this there is a strong theoretical preference for a cosmological constant. We assume that dark energy is described by the so-called Effective Field Theory of Dark Energy, which assumes that dark energy is the Goldstone boson of time translations. Such a formalism makes it easy to ensure that our signatures are consistent with well-established principles of physics. Since most of the information resides at high wavenumbers, it is important to be able to make predictions at the highest wavenumber that is possible. The Effective Field Theory of Large-Scale Structure (EFTofLSS) is a theoretical framework that has allowed us to make accurate predictions in the mildly non-linear regime. In this paper, we derive the non-linear equations that extend the EFTofLSS to include the effect of dark energy both on the matter fields and on the biased tracers. The Effective Field Theory of Large-Scale Structure (EFTofLSS) provides a novel formalism that is able to accurately predict the clustering of large-scale structure (LSS) in the mildly non-linear regime. Here we provide the first computation of the power spectrum of biased tracers in redshift space at one loop order, and we make the associated code publicly available. We compare the multipoles $\ell=0,2$ of the redshift-space halo power spectrum, together with the real-space matter and halo power spectra, with data from numerical simulations at $z=0.67$. For the samples we compare to, which have a number density of $\bar n=3.8 \cdot 10^{-2}(h \ {\rm Mpc}^{-1})^3$ and $\bar n=3.9 \cdot 10^{-4}(h \ {\rm Mpc}^{-1})^3$, we find that the calculation at one-loop order matches numerical measurements to within a few percent up to $k\simeq 0.43 \ h \ {\rm Mpc}^{-1}$, a significant improvement with respect to former techniques. By performing the so-called IR-resummation, we find that the Baryon Acoustic Oscillation peak is accurately reproduced. Based on the results presented here, long-wavelength statistics that are routinely observed in LSS surveys can be finally computed in the EFTofLSS. We construct the Supersymmetric Effective Field Theory of Inflation, that is the most general theory of inflationary fluctuations when time-translations and supersymmetry are spontaneously broken. The non-linear realization of these invariances allows us to define a complete SUGRA multiplet containing the graviton, the gravitino, the Goldstone of time translations and the Goldstino, with no auxiliary fields. Going to a unitary gauge where only the graviton and the gravitino are present, we write the most general Lagrangian built out of the fluctuations of these fields, invariant under time-dependent spatial diffeomorphisms, but softly-breaking time diffeomorphisms and gauged SUSY. With a suitable St\"uckelberg transformation, we introduce the Goldstone boson of time translation and the Goldstino of SUSY. No additional dynamical light field is needed. In the high energy limit, larger than the inflationary Hubble scale for the Goldstino, these fields decouple from the graviton and the gravitino, greatly simplifying the analysis in this regime. We study the phenomenology of this Lagrangian. The Goldstino can have a non-relativistic dispersion relation. Gravitino and Goldstino affect the primordial curvature perturbations at loop level. The UV modes running in the loops generate three-point functions which are degenerate with the ones coming from operators already present in the absence of supersymmetry. Their size is potentially as large as corresponding to $f_{\rm NL}^{\rm equil.,\,orthog.}\sim 1$ or, for particular operators, even $\gg 1$. Most of the upcoming cosmological information will come from analyzing the clustering of the Large Scale Structures (LSS) of the universe through LSS or CMB observations. It is therefore essential to be able to understand their behavior with exquisite precision. The Effective Field Theory of Large Scale Structures (EFTofLSS) provides a consistent framework to make predictions for LSS observables in the mildly non-linear regime. In this paper we focus on biased tracers. We argue that in calculations at a given order in the dark matter perturbations, highly biased tracers will underperform because of their larger higher derivative biases. A natural prediction of the EFTofLSS is therefore that by simply adding higher derivative biases, all tracers should perform comparably well. We implement this prediction for the halo-halo and the halo-matter power spectra at one loop, and the halo-halo-halo, halo-halo-matter, and halo-matter-matter bispectra at tree-level, and compare with simulations. We find good agreement with the prediction: for all tracers, we are able to match the bispectra up to $k\simeq0.17\,h/$Mpc at $z=0$ and the power spectra to a higher wavenumber., Comment: 39 pages, 8 figures
