Abstract

This document is comprised of a collection of updated preliminary parameters for the key parts of the muon collider. The updated preliminary parameters follow on from the October 2023 Tentative Parameters Report. Particular attention has been given to regions of the facility that are believed to hold greater technical uncertainty in their design and that have a strong impact on the cost and power consumption of the facility. The data is collected from a collaborative spreadsheet and transferred to overleaf.

Abstract

Introduction. Here we reported the virological, entomological and epidemiological characteristics of the large autochthonous outbreak of dengue (DENV) occurred in a small village of the Lombardy region (Northern Italy) during summer 2023. Methods. After the diagnosis of the first autochthonous case on 18 August 2023, public health measures, including epidemiological investigation and vector control measures, were carried out. A serological screening for DENV antibodies detection was offered to the population. In the case of positive DENV IgM, a second sample was collected to detect DENV RNA and verify seroconversion. Entomological and epidemiological investigations were also performed. A modeling analysis was conducted to estimate the dengue generation time, transmission potential, distance of transmission, and assess diagnostic delays. Results. Overall, 416 subjects participated to the screening program and 20 were identified as DENV-1 cases (15 confirmed and 5 probable). In addition, DENV-1 infection was diagnosed in 24 symptomatic subjects referred to the local Emergency Room Department for suggestive symptoms and 1 case was identified through blood donation screening. The average generation time was estimated to be 18.3 days (95% CI: 13.1-23.5 days). R0 was estimated at 1.31 (95% CI: 0.76-1.98); 90% of transmission occurred within 500m. Entomological investigations performed in 46 pools of mosquitoes revealed the presence of only one positive pool for DENV-1. Discussion. This report highlights the importance of synergic surveillance, including virological, entomological and public health measures to control the spread of arboviral infections.

Abstract

The International Muon Collider Collaboration (IMCC) [1] was established in 2020 following the recommendations of the European Strategy for Particle Physics (ESPP) and the implementation of the European Strategy for Particle Physics-Accelerator R&D Roadmap by the Laboratory Directors Group [2], hereinafter referred to as the the European LDG roadmap. The Muon Collider Study (MuC) covers the accelerator complex, detectors and physics for a future muon collider. In 2023, European Commission support was obtained for a design study of a muon collider (MuCol) [3]. This project started on 1st March 2023, with work-packages aligned with the overall muon collider studies. In preparation of and during the 2021-22 U.S. Snowmass process, the muon collider project parameters, technical studies and physics performance studies were performed and presented in great detail. Recently, the P5 panel [4] in the U.S. recommended a muon collider R&D, proposed to join the IMCC and envisages that the U.S. should prepare to host a muon collider, calling this their "muon shot". In the past, the U.S. Muon Accelerator Programme (MAP) [5] has been instrumental in studies of concepts and technologies for a muon collider., Comment: This document summarises the International Muon Collider Collaboration (IMCC) progress and status of the Muon Collider R&D programme

4. Positivity bounds on electromagnetic properties of media

Abstract

We study the constraints imposed on the electromagnetic response of general media by microcausality (commutators of local fields vanish outside the light cone) and positivity of the imaginary parts (the medium can only absorb energy from the external field). The equations of motion for the average electromagnetic field in a medium -- the macroscopic Maxwell equations -- can be derived from the in-in effective action and the effect of the medium is encoded in the electric and magnetic permeabilities $\varepsilon(\omega,|\boldsymbol{k}|)$ and $\mu(\omega,|\boldsymbol{k}|)$. Microcausality implies analyticity of the retarded Green's functions when the imaginary part of the $4$-vector $(\omega,\boldsymbol{k})$ lies in forward light cone. With appropriate assumptions about the behavior of the medium at high frequencies one derives dispersion relations, originally studied by Leontovich. In the case of dielectrics these relations, combined with the positivity of the imaginary parts, imply bounds on the low-energy values of the response, $\varepsilon(0,0)$ and $\mu(0,0)$. In particular the quantities $\varepsilon(0,0)-1$ and $\varepsilon(0,0) - 1/\mu(0,0)$ are constrained to be positive and equal to integrals over the imaginary parts of the response. We discuss various improvements of these bounds in the case of non-relativistic media and with additional assumptions about the UV behavior., Comment: 27 pages + appendices, 7 figures

8. Thickness effect on superconducting properties of niobium films for radio-frequency cavity applications

Abstract

Niobium-coated copper radio-frequency cavities are cost-effective alternatives to bulk niobium cavities, given the lower material costs of copper substrates and their operation in liquid helium at around 4.2 K. However, these cavities historically exhibited a gradual degradation in performance with the accelerating field. This phenomenon, not yet fully understood, limits the application of niobium thin film cavities in accelerators where the real-estate gradient needs to be maximized. Recent studies on niobium films deposited on copper using high power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS) technique show promising results in mitigating the performance degradation of niobium thin film radio-frequency cavities. This paper examines the effect of film thickness on the superconducting properties of niobium films deposited on copper using HiPIMS. The study provides insights into how the critical temperature, transition width, lower and upper critical fields, and critical current density vary with the film thickness. Increasing the thickness of niobium films deposited through HiPIMS is found to enhance superconducting properties and reduce densities of defects and structural irregularities in the crystalline lattice. We study the $S$-matrix of Goldstones in the renormalizable theory of a $U(1)$ complex scalar at finite charge, i.e. in a state that breaks Lorentz invariance. The theory is weakly coupled so that this $S$-matrix exists at all energies. Unlike the Lorentz invariant case, the resulting $S$-matrix is not analytic in the exchanged (complexified) four-momentum. Knowledge representation (KR) is vital in designing symbolic notations to represent real-world facts and facilitate automated decision-making tasks. Knowledge graphs (KGs) have emerged so far as a popular form of KR, offering a contextual and human-like representation of knowledge. In international economics, KGs have proven valuable in capturing complex interactions between commodities, companies, and countries. By putting the gravity model, which is a common economic framework, into the process of building KGs, important factors that affect trade relationships can be taken into account, making it possible to predict international trade patterns. This paper proposes an approach that leverages Knowledge Graph embeddings for modeling international trade, focusing on link prediction using embeddings. Thus, valuable insights are offered to policymakers, businesses, and economists, enabling them to anticipate the effects of changes in the international trade system. Moreover, the integration of traditional machine learning methods with KG embeddings, such as decision trees and graph neural networks are also explored. Abstract

This paper presents a methodology for simulating screw pumps using a 3D-CFD transient approach. It is known in literature that the advantages of screw pumps in noise emission, reliability, and their capacity to work with any kind of fluid make their applications interesting for many fields. Increasing demands for high-performance screw pumps require a deep understanding of the flow field inside the machine. The investigation is performed by use of a 3D computational fluid dynamics analysis based on a single-domain structured moving mesh obtained by novel grid generation procedure through the commercial software SCORG. The real-time mass flow rate, rotor torque, pressure distribution, velocity field, and other performance indicators including the indicated power were obtained from numerical simulations performed in the SimericsMP+ environment. The performance curves of the numerical model were produced for variable rotation speeds and discharge pressures and compared with experimental data with high accuracy. The pressure distribution in the screw groove is relatively uniform, the screw clearance and the meshing area pressure are different from the screw groove pressure distribution. The results demonstrate that the speed does not have a considerable effect on the pressure field. At last, the numerical model was validated by comparing the numerical results with the measured performance obtained in the experimental test rig through the comprehensive experiment performed for a set of discharge pressures and rotational speeds. The model has shown to predict pressure variation and flow rate with good accuracy.

Abstract

The Energy optimization is becoming fundamental in the Fluid Power world. University and industries are working hard to promote innovative and efficient ideas to optimize components that are the main cause of energy dissipation of ICE and recently Electric Off-Road vehicles. A new hydraulic layout based on the concept of “Downstream compensation” is introduced and then validated using real test data. Three architectures of this innovative Directional Control Valve are presented in this paper. The first idea of layout includes a compensator controlled by two pressure signals taken before and after the main spool of the hydraulic circuit. Thanks to its controlled stroke, this compensator diverts to a highpressure accumulator part of flow that otherwise would be delivered to the tank. Moreover, two different layouts able to satisfy the Flow Sharing characteristic were developed. In any configuration, the compensator, thanks to its downstream position, allows to control the return flow, realizing a remarkable energy recovery from the overrunning loads and the simultaneous use of multiple actuators at different pressure levels. For all the analyzed hydraulic circuit, lumped parameter models were realized, using a commercial software. These models, validated with experimental tests, have allowed to calculate the energy recovery achieved by the system. Moreover, an optimization of the most important system’s parameters and components were realized to improve the system efficiency. In every tested configuration, this compensator ensures great advantages for both the energy recovery and the economic point of view. Finally, an outlook is drawn of the reuse of recovered flow through the application of an electrohydraulic motor.

Abstract

The evaporative emission control system (EVAP system) is the most commonly used strategy to limit the unburned petrol vapor emissions from a gasoline-fueled vehicle fuel tank, in order to comply with the international regulations on Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) emission. A carbon canister is used to collect and store the gasoline vapors generated in the tank, then it is purged by the engine intake manifold depression and the vapors are burned in the engine along with the fresh charge. In this activity, a 1.0 L carbon canister for European gasoline vehicles, provided by FCA, has been used for an experimental analysis, in order to characterize its adsorption and desorption behavior. A standard mixture of n-butane and nitrogen (40 g/h of n-butane, 50% vol. with nitrogen) has been used for loading the canister to breakthrough (2 g); canister purging has been performed with 3000 bed volumes of nitrogen flux at 25 L/min. Tests have been performed in FCA laboratories, at the Pomigliano Technical Center. Canister mass gain has been measured during the tests and after each test with a precision weight scale. Internal temperatures have also been measured by K-type thermocouples placed inside the carbon bed; due to the adsorption process, bed temperatures can reach 70 °C. After several tests, results on mass gain show an “aging” trend of the activated carbons.

Abstract

A numerical three-dimensional CFD analysis of a variable displacement vane pump has been conducted, investigating the effects on the pressure ripple caused by the vane detaching from the pressure ring. The volume of the fluid over the vane tip has been re-meshed at every time step as a function of the forces acting on the bottom and the top of each vane. The numerical model has been developed using the commercial tool, Simerics MP+, including turbulence and cavitation models. The validation of the model has been done comparing numerical and experimental data. It has been observed that the detachment of the vane occurs during the transition zones when unwanted pressure spikes are generated by a nonoptimized valve plate design. The prediction of vane detachment is crucial for designing a quieter and more durable pump. Vane collision on the stator ring can be a source of noise producing premature wear of both components. Vane detachment from the stator ring has a large effect on pressure ripple even if the volumetric efficiency is only slightly influenced.

Abstract

We study mean convex mean curvature flow $M_s$ of local spacelike graphs in the flat slicing of de Sitter space. We show that if the initial slice is of non-negative time and is graphical over a large enough ball, and if $M_s$ is of bounded mean curvature, then as $s$ goes to infinity, $M_s$ becomes graphical in expanding balls, over which the gradient function converges to $1$. In particular, if $p_s$ is the point lying over the center of the domain ball in $M_s$, then $(M_s,p_s)$ converges smoothly to the flat slicing of de Sitter space. This has some relation to the mean curvature flow approach to the cosmic no hair conjecture.

After the successful full-shape analyses of BOSS data using the Effective Field Theory of Large-Scale Structure, we investigate what upcoming galaxy surveys might achieve. We introduce a ``perturbativity prior" that ensures that loop terms are as large as theoretically expected, which is effective in the case of a large number of EFT parameters. After validating our technique by comparison with already-performed analyses of BOSS data, we provide Fisher forecasts using the one-loop prediction for power spectrum and bispectrum for two benchmark surveys: DESI and MegaMapper. We find overall great improvements on the cosmological parameters. In particular, we find that MegaMapper (DESI) should obtain at least a 12$\sigma$ ($2\sigma$) evidence for non-vanishing neutrino masses, bound the curvature $\Omega_k$ to 0.0012 (0.012), and primordial inflationary non-Gaussianities as follows: $f_{\text{NL}}^{\text{loc.}}$ to $\pm 0.26$ (3.3), $f_{\text{NL}}^{\text{eq.}}$ to $\pm16$ (92), $f_{\text{NL}}^{\text{orth.}}$ to $\pm 4.2$ (27). Such measurements would provide much insight on the theory of Inflation. Abstract

Excitonic condensation and superfluidity have recently received a renewed attention, due to the fabrication of bilayer systems in which electrons and hole are spatially separated and form stable pairs known as indirect excitons. Dichalcogenides- and graphene- based bilayers are nowadays built and investigated, giving access to systems with (i) only spin degeneracy, (ii) spin and valley degeneracy. Simulation studies performed in the last decade at $T=0$ for simple, model electron-hole bilayers, as function of inter-layer distance and in-layer carrier density, have revealed in case (i) the formation of biexcitons in a tiny region of parameter space and in case (ii) the formation of stable compounds made of 4 electrons and 4 holes (quadriexcitons) in a sizable region of parameter space. Of some interest is the relation of the properties of isolated biexcitons (quadriexcitons) and those of their finite density counterpart. In fact, the isolated biexciton has been repeatedly studied in the last years with simulations and other techniques. No simulations, instead, are available to our knowledge for the isolated quadriexciton, for which we present here results of the first quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) study. Stability with respect to the dissociation into biexcitons, and the pair correlations with varying the inter-layer distance $d$ are discussed.

Abstract

Nowadays, worldwide environmental issue, associated to reduction of pollutant and greenhouse emissions are gaining considerable attention. Aviation sector contribution to the whole CO2 released accounts to around 2%, but it is expected to grow in the next future due to increase of demand. Probably, combustion engine design and fuel efficiency have already reached their optimum technology level and only a breakthrough as hybrid-electric propulsion could be able to satisfy the new international more demanding requirements. However, an improvement of the technology readiness level of hybrid-electric propulsion is strongly necessary and many operational and safety challenges should be addressed. In the work here reported, a hybrid-electric model was designed and developed for general aviation aircrafts, by means of the Mathworks® Matlab – Simulink 1D/0D simulation environment. Both thermal and electric energy storage units, transmission systems and power management devices were considered and the overall performances were evaluated during cruise phase and a conventional training mission, characterized by several run(lap) “touch-and-go”. Furthermore, an innovative mathematical methodology was implemented for battery pack discharge profile interpolation. Finally, reliability and accuracy of the new proposed model were evaluated through comparison with the commercial code Simcenter AMESim® software and an average bias only equal to 5% was achieved.

Abstract We study the constraints imposed on the electromagnetic response of general media by microcausality (commutators of local fields vanish outside the light cone) and positivity of the imaginary parts (the medium can only absorb energy from the external field). The equations of motion for the average electromagnetic field in a medium — the macroscopic Maxwell equations — can be derived from the in-in effective action and the effect of the medium is encoded in the electric and magnetic permeabilities ε(ω, |k|) and μ(ω, |k|). Microcausality implies analyticity of the retarded Green’s functions when the imaginary part of the 4-vector (ω, k) lies in forward light cone. With appropriate assumptions about the behavior of the medium at high frequencies one derives dispersion relations, originally studied by Leontovich. In the case of dielectrics these relations, combined with the positivity of the imaginary parts, imply bounds on the low-energy values of the response, ε(0, 0) and μ(0, 0). In particular the quantities ε(0, 0) – 1 and ε(0, 0) – 1/μ(0, 0) are constrained to be positive and equal to integrals over the imaginary parts of the response. We discuss various improvements of these bounds in the case of non-relativistic media and with additional assumptions about the UV behavior.

Abstract

Stabilizer operations are at the heart of quantum error correction and are typically implemented in software-controlled entangling gates and measurements of groups of qubits. Alternatively, qubits can be designed so that the Hamiltonian corresponds directly to a stabilizer for protecting quantum information. We demonstrate such a hardware implementation of stabilizers in a superconducting circuit composed of chains of $\pi$-periodic Josephson elements. Abstract

We develop a new way to analytically calculate loop integrals in the Effective Field Theory of Large Scale-Structure. Previous available methods show severe limitations beyond the one-loop power spectrum due to analytical challenges and computational and memory costs. Our new method is based on fitting the linear power spectrum with cosmology-independent functions that resemble integer powers of quantum field theory massive propagators with complex masses. A remarkable small number of them is sufficient to reach enough accuracy. Similarly to former approaches, the cosmology dependence is encoded in the coordinate vector of the expansion of the linear power spectrum in our basis. We first produce cosmology-independent tensors where each entry is the loop integral evaluated on a given combination of basis vectors. For each cosmology, the evaluation of a loop integral amounts to contracting this tensor with the coordinate vector of the linear power spectrum. The 3-dimensional loop integrals for our basis functions can be evaluated using techniques familiar to particle physics, such as recursion relations and Feynman parametrization. We apply our formalism to evaluate the one-loop bispectrum of galaxies in redshift space. The final analytical expressions are quite simple and can be evaluated with little computational and memory cost. We show that the same expressions resolve the integration of all one-loop $N$-point function in the EFTofLSS. Abstract

We derive the kernels and the Effective Field Theory of Large-Scale Structure counterterms for the one-loop bispectrum of dark matter and of biased tracers in real and redshift space. This requires the expansion of biased tracers up to fourth order in fluctuations. In the process, we encounter several subtleties related to renormalization. One is the fact that, in renormalizing the momentum, a local counterterm contributes non-locally. A second subtlety is related to the renormalization of local products of the velocity fields, which need to be expressed in terms of the renormalized velocity in order to preserve Galilean symmetry. We check that the counterterms we identify are necessary and sufficient to renormalize the one-loop bispectrum at leading and subleading order in the derivative expansion. We derive positivity bounds on EFT coefficients in theories where boosts are spontaneously broken. We employ the analytic properties of the retarded Green's function of conserved currents (or of the stress-energy tensor) and assume the theory becomes conformal in the UV. The method is general and applicable to both cosmology and condensed matter systems. Abstract

The development of modular and versatile quantum interconnect hardware is a key next step in the scaling of quantum information platforms to larger size and greater functionality. For superconducting quantum systems, fast and well-controlled tunable circuit couplers will be paramount for achieving high fidelity and resource efficient connectivity, whether for performing two-qubit gate operations, encoding or decoding a quantum data bus, or interfacing across modalities. Here we propose a versatile and internally-tunable double-transmon coupler (DTC) architecture that implements tunable coupling via flux-controlled interference in a three-junction dcSQUID. Crucially, the DTC possesses an internally defined zero-coupling state that is independent of the coupled data qubits or circuit resonators. This makes it particular attractive as a modular and versatile design element for realizing fast and robust linear coupling in several applications such as high-fidelity two-qubit gate operations, qubit readout, and quantum bus interfacing.
