For off-road vehicles such as excavators and wheel loaders, a large portion of energy is consumed to overcome the soil resistant force in the digging process. For optimal control of the digging tool, a high-fidelity model of the soil-tool interaction force is important to reduce energy consumption. In this paper, an on-line soil resistant force prediction method is proposed. In this method, a hybrid model, which combines a physical model and a data driven model, is used for the force prediction. In addition, the parameters of the hybrid model can be updated on-line based on real-time data. Comparisons with experimental data demonstrate that the proposed prediction method has an average error of around 12.7%.

Truss robots are highly redundant parallel robotic systems and can be applied in a variety of scenarios. The variable topology truss (VTT) is a class of modular truss robot. As self-reconfigurable modular robots, variable topology trusses are composed of many edge modules that can be rearranged into various structures with respect to different activities and tasks. These robots are able to change their shapes by not only controlling joint positions which is similar to robots with fixed morphologies, but also reconfiguring the connections among modules in order to change their morphologies. Motion planning is the fundamental to apply a VTT robot, including reconfiguration to alter its shape, and non-impact locomotion on the ground. This problem for VTT robots is difficult due to their non-fixed morphologies, high dimensionality, the potential for self-collision, and complex motion constraints. In this paper, a new motion planning framework to dramatically alter the structure of a VTT is presented. It can also be used to solve locomotion tasks much more efficient compared with previous work. Several test scenarios are used to show its effectiveness., Comment: 22 pages, 34 figures

The Variable Topology Truss (VTT) is a new class of self-reconfigurable robot that can reconfigure its truss shape and topology depending on the task or environment requirements. Motion planning and avoiding self-collision are difficult as these systems usually have dozens of degrees-of-freedom with complex intersecting parallel actuation. There are two different types of shape changing actions for a VTT: geometry reconfiguration and topology reconfiguration. This paper focuses on the geometry reconfiguration actions. A new cell decomposition approach is presented based on a fast and complete method to compute the collision-free space of a node in a truss. A simple shape-morphing method is shown to quickly create motion paths for reconfiguration by moving one node at a time.
