Abstract

The experimental thermal neutron cross sections of the twenty proteinogenic amino acids have been measured over the incident-neutron energy range spanning from 1 meV to 10 keV and data have been interpreted using the multi-phonon expansion based on first-principles calculations. The scattering cross section, dominated by the incoherent inelastic contribution from the hydrogen atoms, can be rationalised in terms of the average contributions of different functional groups, thus neglecting their correlation. These results can be used for modelling the total neutron cross sections of complex organic systems like proteins, muscles, or human tissues from a limited number of starting input functions. This simplification is of crucial importance for fine-tuning of transport simulations used in medical applications, including boron neutron capture therapy as well as secondary neutrons-emission induced during proton therapy. Moreover, the parametrized neutron cross sections allow a better treatment of neutron scattering experiments, providing detailed sample self-attenuation corrections for a variety of biological and soft-matter systems.

7. Changes in the zero point energy of the protons as the source of the binding energy of water to A phase DNA

Abstract

The zero point kinetic energy of protons in water is large on the scale of chemical interaction energies(29 Kj/mol in bulk room temperature water). Its value depends upon the structure of the hydrogen bond network, and can change as the network is confined or as water interacts with surfaces. These changes have been observed to be large on a chemical scale for water confined in carbon nanotubes and in the pores of xerogel, and may play a fundamental, and neglected, role in biological processes involving confined water. We measure the average momentum distribution of the protons in salmon Na-DNA using Deep Inelastic Neutron Scattering, for a weakly hydrated (6w/bp) and a dehydrated fiber sample. This permits the determination of the change in total kinetic energy of the system per water molecule removed from the DNA and placed in the bulk liquid. This energy is equal, within errors, to the measured enthalpy for the same process, demonstrating that changes in the zero point motion of the protons, arising from changes in structure as water molecules are incorporated in the DNA, are a significant factor in the energetics of the transition from the A to B phase with hydration, in this case, providing the entire binding energy of the water molecules to the DNA. The shape of the momentum distribution in the dehydrated phase is consistent with coherent delocalization of some of the protons in a double well potential, with a separation of the wells of .2 Angstroms., Comment: 5 pages 1 figure

Abstract

The paper in the title [1] reports measurements of neutron scattering from hydrogen in the 1-100 eV range of energy transfers, using the direct geometry MARI spectrometer at ISIS. Stock et al claim that their measurements have better or comparable energy resolution to those on the inverse geometry VESUVIO spectrometer at ISIS. Most importantly the main conclusions of ref [1] are not valid unless this claim is true: in particular the conclusion that anomalous neutron cross sections measured on VESUVIO [2] are "the result of experimental issues using indirect geometry spectrometers". We present here overwhelming evidence that the energy resolution of the measurements in ref [1] is much coarser than on VESUVIO. It follows that the conclusions of Stock et al are unfounded. In reality the measurements of reference [1] serve mainly to demonstrate that at eV neutron energies, direct geometry chopper spectrometers have greatly inferior energy resolution to inverse geometry spectrometers based on resonance foil methods., Comment: 20 pages

10. Kinetic energy of He atoms in liquid $^4$He-$^3$He mixtures

Abstract

Deep Inelastic Neutron Scattering measurements on liquid $^3$He-$^4$He mixtures in the normal phase have been performed on the VESUVIO spectrometer at the ISIS pulsed neutron source at exchanged wavevectors of about $q \simeq 120.0$ \AA$^{-1}$. The neutron Compton profiles J(y) of the mixtures were measured along the $T=1.96$ K isotherm for $^3$He concentrations, $x$, ranging from 0.1 to 1.0 at saturated vapour pressures. Values of kinetic energies, $$, of $^3$He and $^4$He atoms as a function of $x$, $(x)$, were extracted from the second moment of J(y). The present determinations of $(x)$ confirm previous experimental findings for both isotopes and, in the case of $^3$He, a substantial disagreement with theory is found. In particular $(x)$ for the $^3$He atoms is found to be independent of concentration yielding a value $_3(x=0.1)\simeq 12 K $, much lower than the value suggested by the most recent theoretical estimates of approximately 19 K ., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication, Physical Review B

Abstract

For the first time, an experimental determination of the single-particle mean kinetic energies for 3He along the T=2.00 K isotherm in the dense liquid and in the solid hcp and bcc phases is reported. Deep Inelastic Neutron Scattering measurements at exchanged wavevectors ranging from 90.0 A^-1 to 140.0 A^-1 have been performed in order to evaluate, within the framework of the Impulse Approximation, the molar volume dependence of the kinetic energy. Abstract

The European Spallation Source is being built in Lund, Sweden and it’s planned to be the brightest pulsed spallation source for thermal and cold neutrons (<1 eV). Neutrons will be produced by a 2 GeV accelerated proton beam hitting a tungsten target wheel, then they are moderated by liquid hydrogen and water based moderator system and delivered to 42 beam-ports. Neutrons are transported via reflections to a set of instruments connected to the beam-ports through neutron guides. Undesired fast neutrons can cause a radiation safety issue, since they can find their way down the beam-lines and thus generate a large dose. A designed shielding structure is needed to minimize such effect during the beam at the target phase. We present the results of neutronic calculations to optimize the guide shielding for the VESPA instrument.

Abstract

An overview is provided of the 15 neutron beam instruments making up the initial instrument suite of the European Spallation Source (ESS), and being made available to the neutron user community. The ESS neutron source consists of a high-power accelerator and target station, providing a unique long-pulse time structure of slow neutrons. The design considerations behind the time structure, moderator geometry and instrument layout are presented. The 15-instrument suite consists of two small-angle instruments, two reflectometers, an imaging beamline, two single-crystal diffractometers; one for macromolecular crystallography and one for magnetism, two powder diffractometers, and an engineering diffractometer, as well as an array of five inelastic instruments comprising two chopper spectrometers, an inverse-geometry single-crystal excitations spectrometer, an instrument for vibrational spectroscopy and a high-resolution backscattering spectrometer. The conceptual design, performance and scientific drivers of each of these instruments are described. All of the instruments are designed to provide breakthrough new scientific capability, not currently available at existing facilities, building on the inherent strengths of the ESS long-pulse neutron source of high flux, flexible resolution and large bandwidth. Each of them is predicted to provide world-leading performance at an accelerator power of 2 MW. This technical capability translates into a very broad range of scientific capabilities. The composition of the instrument suite has been chosen to maximise the breadth and depth of the scientific impact of the early years of the ESS, and provide a solid base for completion and further expansion of the facility.

Abstract

We report recent developments regarding the TOSCA (ISIS, UK) and VESPA (ESS, Sweden) neutron broadband chemical spectrometers, both joint ventures between CNR (IT) and ISIS (UK). TOSCA has seen the first major upgrade since it first became operational over fifteen years ago. The new design of the primary spectrometer, which exploits a state-of-the-art, high-m neutron guide and associated chopper system, is boosting the useful neutron flux by over an order of magnitude. Feasibility studies for an upgrade of the secondary spectrometer have been performed, outlining an additional order-of-magnitude gain in performance. In the case of VESPA, the novel characteristics and challenges arising from a long-pulse spallation source such as ESS are part of the drivers of the instrument design. For both the primary and secondary spectrometers, a detailed analysis of expected performance, supported by both simulations and analytical models, is being carried out, also capitalizing from experience on TOSCA. Indeed, for instrument design and optimization, extensive neutron-transport simulations and baseline studies of neutronic response have become a must, along with extensive benchmarking against much-needed experimental data. All these combined efforts represent the first opportunity to benchmark a broadband, high-resolution chemical spectrometer in terms of measured vs. simulated response.

Abstract

This paper presents a neutron accelerated study of soft errors in advanced electronic devices used in space missions, i.e. Flash memories performed at the ChipIr and VESUVIO beam lines at the ISIS spallation neutron source. The two neutron beam lines are set up to mimic the space environment spectra and allow neutron irradiation tests on Flash memories in the neutron energy range above 10 MeV and up to 800 MeV. The ISIS neutron energy spectrum is similar to the one occurring in the atmospheric as well as in space and planetary environments, with intensity enhancements varying in the range 108- 10 9 and 106- 10 7 respectively. Such conditions are suitable for the characterization of the atmospheric, space and planetary neutron radiation environments, and are directly applicable for accelerated tests of electronic components as demonstrated here in benchmark measurements performed on flash memories.

Abstract

The neutron Irradiation Module at the European Spallation Source will make use of the high intensity fast neutron spectrum to study the behaviour of the materials used in the facility, set within the ESS research and development program for the target station. By studying how these materials are affected by radiation, estimates of the material degradation in irrradiated bespoke samples will allow to optimise of the design and lifetime of regularly replaced target components. The general design and a set of results from the neutronics calculations, aimed at estimating proton and neutron flux distributions, displacement damage, heat deposition and activation for the radiological hazard analysis of the Irradiation Module, set within the Italian contributions to the ESS construction phase, are reported.
