Abstract

In response to a mandate by The National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal year 2008, Section 222, the Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA) was tasked by the Department of Defense to carry out an independent study to examine and make recommendations with respect to the long-term missions, roles, and structure of the Missile Defense Agency (MDA). The scope of the review included panel discussions with leadership from the Army; Navy; Air Force; Joint Staff; Under Secretary of Defense for Policy; Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics; Director, Operational Test and Evaluation; Program Analysis and Evaluation; and the Defense Information Systems Agency, as well as MDA. Several discussions were also held with contractors supporting MDA. The review also included site visits to United States Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM), United States Northern Command, Air Force Space Command, the Missile Defense Integration and Operations Center, and MDA at Redstone Arsenal. Abstract

Changes in the soluble protein pattern of leaves of eight lines of barley, carrying different resistance genes to mildew, were analysed by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and isoelectric focusing. Apparently new host proteins were induced by Erysiphe graminis f. sp. bordei in the incompatible reaction which were not present in the immune or susceptible response. These proteins are of low molecular weight, 13,500-27,500 d, and have either very low or very high isoelectric points. Thus, they resemble the pathogenesis-related proteins found in many dicotyledonous species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

For the past six years, we have been benefiting from the discovery by Tsai and Melo (2014) that the trace of the plane stress stiffness matrix ( tr ( Q ) ) of an orthotropic composite is a fundamental and powerful scaling property of laminated composite materials. Algebraically, tr ( Q ) turns out to be a measure of the summation of the moduli of the material. It is, therefore, a material property. Additionally, since tr ( Q ) is an invariant of the stiffness tensor Q , independently of the coordinate system, the number of layers, layup sequence and loading condition (in-plane or flexural) in a laminate, if the material system remains the same, tr ( Q ) = tr ( A ∗ ) = tr ( D ∗ ) is still the same. Therefore, tr ( Q ) is the total stiffness that one can work with making it one of the most powerful and fundamental concepts discovered in the theory of composites recently. By reducing the number of variables, this concept shall simplify the design, analysis and optimization of composite laminates, thus enabling lighter, stronger and better parts. The reduced number of variables shall result in reducing the number and type of tests required for characterization of composite laminates, thus reducing bureaucratic certification burden. These effects shall enable a new era in the progress of composites in the future. For the above-mentioned reasons, it is proposed here to call this fundamental property, tr ( Q ) , as Tsai’s Modulus.

9. Induction and Characterization of Penicillium caseicolum Mutants Resistant to Ergosterol Biosynthesis Inhibitors.

Abstract

The isolation of Penicillium caseicolum mutants resistant to different fungicides which inhibit ergosterol biosynthesis is reported. Mutational frequencies for resistance were high (3 x 10 to 3 x 10). The levels of resistance toward the inhibitors of sterol C-14 demethylation were always low (<10), whereas high values were obtained with mutants resistant to inhibitors of sterol Delta14 reduction or Delta8-->Delta7 isomerization, or both. Generally, there was a positive cross-resistance between fungicides showing the same biochemical mode of action but not between compounds of two different groups. Mycelial growth rate and sporulation were tested; several mutants were not affected for these characteristics. We conclude that resistance to ergosterol biosynthesis inhibitors may be used as a good marker for genetic studies through protoplast fusion.
