8. An archaeology of screenwriting in Indian cinema, 1930s-1950s

Abstract

The Euro-American scholarship on screenwriting has produced elaborate histories of the development of the screenplay form with reference to extensive archival collections of film scenarios and scripts. On the other hand, the archival absence of early Indian film scripts has largely invisibilised practices of screenwriting and retroactively contributed to stereotypical descriptions of Indian film industries as unorganised. As a process of imagination and marker of industrialisation, screenwriting is often privileged as the most cerebral, analytical and rational process of film production. The stark absence of screenwriting histories in film cultures of the Global South makes it the absent technique of non-Western cinemas. In the thesis, I critically engage with the archival absence as a heuristic to rethink South Asian screenwriting practices beyond the prescriptive model of manuals as well as Euro-American notions of screenwriting. It is an archaeological as well as a media archaeological project. As an archaeological investigation in the Foucauldian mould, it studies the contradictions of screenwriting practice and discourse in order to understand how perceptions of archival lack and technical backwardness vis- -vis screenwriting in India gained the currency of truth. As a media archaeological project, it collates a disparate and discontinuous cross-section of screenwriting artefacts, discourses and practices in the archival absence of a formally evolving pre-cinematic text. Despite its reliance on archival and ethnographic sources, my research does not attempt to construct a comprehensive, chronological history of screenwriting practices in Bengali and Bombay cinema. Instead, this critical history epistemically delinks screenwriting from universalist discourses, introduces regional specificities and cultural subjectivities, and presents an alternative non-linear model of film historiography beyond questions of archival absence and technical backwardness.

18. Oscillatory dynamics in complex recurrent neural networks

Abstract

Spontaneous oscillations measured by Local field potentials (LFPs), electroencephalograms and magnetoencephalograms exhibits variety of oscillations spanning frequency band ($1-100$ Hz) in animals and humans. Both instantaneous power and phase of these ongoing oscillations have commonly been observed to correlate with pre-stimulus processing in animals and humans. However, despite of numerous attempts it is not fully clear whether the same mechanisms can give rise to a range of oscillations as observed in vivo during resting state spontaneous oscillatory activity of the brain. In the current paper we show how oscillatory activity can arise out of general recurrent on-center off-surround neural network. The current work shows (a) a complex valued input to a class of biologically inspired recurrent neural networks can be shown to be mathematically equivalent to a combination of real-valued recurrent network with real-valued feed forward network, (b) such a network can give rise to oscillatory signatures. Abstract

Water Conservation is the need of the hour and attitudes towards conserving the resources is what is sure to become a priority in the coming years. The paper introduces a scale constructed to test the Attitude towards water conservation in India. It contains various sub-scales that include a General Attitude towards water conservation, Past behavior/experience, Moral obligation to save water resources, Perceived water right, and Behavioural intention of conserving water resources. 432 participants participated in a nationwide survey and their responses were checked for reliability. Results reveal that people generally have a positive attitude towards water conservation and that there is substantial potential of the resources’ conservation. The scale can be used to measure attitude changes and thereby the effectiveness of an implemented plan of action concerning water conservation.

Abstract

Adolescence is a sensitive period that is accompanied with a common problem of low self-esteem and high aggression. In the present research we tried to understand the difference and relationship between developmental aggression and self-esteem among college students. A total of 331 participants were chosen from different colleges and universities of Odisha, India. Rosenberg Self-Esteem and Buss & Press Aggression scales were used in this study for tapping the self-esteem and aggression among adolescences. The result found that in terms of college students' aggression and diligence, there was a significant difference between boys and girls. In the part of the relationship that is important in the findings, there was a partial significance relationship between developmental aggression and selfesteem. Moreover, in terms of level analysis, the finding suggest that, through most of the participants were at the average level of self-esteem and developmental aggression, and males seem to have more self-esteem associated with aggression than females. Our findings further suggest that factors of age and parent occupation that play a significant role in eruption of high developmental aggression and selfesteem in college students.
