Bilateral gait symmetry is an essential requirement for normal walking since asymmetric gait patterns increase the risk of falls and injuries. While human gait control heavily relies on the contribution of sensory inputs, the role of sensory systems in producing symmetric gait has remained unclear. This study evaluated the influence of vision as a dominant sensory system on symmetric gait production. Ten healthy adults performed treadmill walking with and without vision. Twenty-two gait parameters including ground reaction forces, joint range of motion, and other spatial–temporal gait variables were evaluated to quantify gait symmetry and compared between both visual conditions. Visual block caused increased asymmetry in most parameters of ground reaction force, however mainly in the vertical direction. When vision was blocked, symmetry of the ankle and knee joint range of motion decreased, but this change did not occur in the hip joint. Stance and swing time symmetry decreased during no-vision walking while no significant difference was found for step length symmetry between the two conditions. This study provides a comprehensive analysis to reveal how the visual system influences bilateral gait symmetry and highlights the important role of vision in gait control. Parental behavior is essential for mammalian offspring to survive. Because of this significance, elucidating the neurobiological mechanisms that facilitate parental behavior has received strong interest. Decades of studies utilizing pharmacology and molecular biology have revealed that in addition to its facilitatory effects on parturition and lactation, oxytocin (OT) promotes the expression of parental behavior in rodents. Recent studies have also described the modulation of sensory processing by OT and the interaction of the OT system with other brain regions associated with parental behavior. However, the precise neurobiological mechanisms underlying the facilitation of caregiving behaviors by OT remain unclear. In this Review , I summarize the findings from rats and mice with a view toward integrating past and recent progress. I then review recent advances in the understanding of the molecular, cellular, and circuit mechanisms of OT-mediated parental behavior. Based on these observations, I propose a hypothetical model that would explain the mechanisms underlying OT-mediated parental behavior. However, this encoding task may become particularly challenging for animals harboring a small number of sensory neurons. Here, we studied how the compact resource-limited chemosensory system of Caenorhabditis elegans uniquely encodes a range of chemical stimuli. Results: We find that each stimulus is encoded using a small and unique subset of neurons, where only a portion of the encoding neurons sense the stimulus directly, and the rest are recruited via inter-neuronal communication. Furthermore, while most neurons show stereotypical response dynamics, some neurons exhibit versatile dynamics that are either stimulus specific or network-activity dependent. Notably, it is the collective dynamics of all responding neurons which provides valuable information that ultimately enhances stimulus identification, particularly when required to discriminate between closely related stimuli. Conclusions: Together, these findings demonstrate how a compact and resource-limited chemosensory system can efficiently encode and discriminate a diverse range of chemical stimuli. Abstract In this contribution, we investigate two sparassodonts from the Sarmiento Formation (Colhuehuapian Age; Early Miocene) recovered at the Patagonian locality of Sacanana, Chubut Province, Argentina. The first specimen (MACN-Pv CH1911), identified as Sipalocyon externus, is an almost complete cranium with upper dentition. The second specimen (MACN-Pv CH40), referred to Borhyaena macrodonta, consists of a fragmentary rostral portion of the face with associated m3–m4. The cranium of S. externus was studied through µCT-scanning to investigate its internal anatomy and infer paleoecological aspects of olfaction and hearing. In general, the endocranial anatomy and encephalization quotient are like those of other metatherians. We report the presence of an accessory transverse diploic sinus that has not previously been described in marsupials. Elements of the nasal cavity (e.g., turbinals, ossified nasal septum, cribriform plate) of S. externus exhibit features that are widespread among marsupials. Sense of olfaction, as evaluated from the cribriform plate and the 3D models of the olfactory bulbs, appears to have grossly resembled that of the domestic cat, a well-researched therian proxy. The dimensions of the tympanic membrane, as estimated from the preserved ectotympanic, suggest that the optimal hearing frequency of S. externus would have been similar to that of extant carnivorous marsupials. In sum, our study suggests that S. externus was a typical small-bodied (2–3 kg) hypercarnivorous metatherian that primarily relied on vision to hunt its prey, complemented by other sensory capabilities (olfaction and hearing), in a similar manner to small felids.

Such morphological shifts may occur for sensory systems, which were previously reported to be prone to change with habitat characteristics in non-urban contexts. Here, we measured traits related to the visual and antennal sensory systems in the bees Halictus scabiosae and Osmia cornuta and the wasp Polistes dominula along an urbanisation gradient within Milan (Italy). We hypothesised that fragmentation could filter for better visual properties, and that higher temperature could filter for fewer thermoreceptors and more olfactory hairs. While controlling for body size, results show subtle but appreciable responses to urbanisation in one or more traits in all species, though not always supporting our hypotheses. O. cornuta shows marginally higher ommatidia density and smaller ommatidia diameter (associated with better visual resolution) in more fragmented sites, as well as marginally fewer thermoreceptors in hotter sites, in agreement with our two predictions. On the other hand, H. scabiosae has marginally smaller antennae and P. dominula has smaller eyes at warmer locations, and the wasp also has smaller antennae and 9th flagellomeres in more fragmented areas. Perhaps higher temperatures accelerate development of sensory system at higher speed than the rest of body in these two species. Our results represent the first evidence of urbanisation effects on the visual and antennal sensory systems of bees and wasps and underline how such effects may involve a much broader bouquet of traits then previously observed.

Brown and white adipose tissue mediate thermogenesis through the thermogenetic centre of the brain, but safe methods for activating thermogensis and knowledge of the associated molecular mechanisms are lacking. We investigated body surface electroacupuncture stimulation (ES) at ST25 (targeted at the abdomen) induction of brown adipose thermogenesis and the neural mechanism of this process. Inguinal white adipose tissue (iWAT) and interscapular brown adipose tissue (iBAT) were collected and the thermogenic protein expression levels were measured to evaluate iBAT thermogenesis capacity. The thermogenic centre activating region and sympathetic outflow were evaluated based on neural electrical activity and c‐fos expression levels. iWAT sensory axon plasticity was analysed with whole‐mount adipose tissue imaging. ES activated the sympathetic nerves in iBAT and the c‐fos‐positive cells induced sympathetic outflow activation to the iBAT from the medial preoptic area (MPA), the dorsomedial hypothalamus (DM) and the raphe pallidus nucleus (RPA). iWAT denervation mice exhibited decreased c‐fos‐positive cells in the DM and RPA, and lower recombinant uncoupling orotein 1 peroxisome proliferator‐activated receptor, β3‐adrenergic receptor, and tyrosine hydroxylase expression. Remodelling the iWAT sensory axons recovered the signal from the MPA to the RPA and induced iBAT thermogenesis. The sympathetic denervation attenuated sensory nerve density. ES induced sympathetic outflow from the thermogenetic centres to iBAT, which mediated thermogenesis. iWAT sensory axon remodelling induced the MPA–DM–RPA–iBAT thermogenesis pathway. This work explores various aspects of the digestive system's functioning during the early stages of development. These functions become systemically associated with our emotional experience, forming mental correlates that affect our mental development throughout our lifespan. Furthermore, these mental correlates lead to the construction of an interface between the functions of the digestive system and our emotional experience. Advancing these notions will be centered around the idea that the digestive system, primarily the parts associated with the functioning of the mouth, esophagus, and stomach, produces sensations no different and no less consequential than the sensory experience produced by our other senses. Thus, and building on the work of Bion, Anzieu, and others, it is further suggested that the above-mentioned parts of the digestive system should be considered a part of our sensory make-up. In addition to its digestive functions, this system is assumed to play an essential role in the composure of our psychic infrastructure and mental development. Finally, special attention is given to the relevance of these ideas to the study of eating disorders. These issues are explored with the purpose of pointing to some potential links between the functions of the digestive system and the specific manifestations of eating disorders. Subplate neurons (SpNs) are a heterogeneous neuronal population actively involved in early cortical circuit formation. In rodents, many SpNs survive and form layer 6b. The molecular heterogeneity of SpNs raises the question of whether different subpopulations of SpNs survive through the early postnatal period similarly and whether such diverse SpN populations in the auditory cortex (ACtx) share a common distribution pattern with other sensory systems. To address that, we investigated the expression pattern of multiple specific SpN markers in the ACtx, as well as in the visual (VCtx) and somatosensory (SCtx) cortices as controls, using complexin 3 (Cplx3) antibodies and different SpN‐specific Cre‐driver mice, such as connective tissue growth factor (CTGF), dopamine receptor D1 (Drd1a), and neurexophilin 4 (Nxph4). We focused on two early time windows in auditory development: (1) during the second postnatal week (PNW) before ear‐canal opening and (2) during the third PNW after ear‐canal opening. We compared the expression pattern of different SpN markers in ACtx with VCtx and SCtx. At both examined timepoints, Cplx3 and Nxph4 expressing SpNs form the largest and smallest population in the ACtx, respectively. Similar distribution patterns are observable in the VCtx and SCtx during the second PNW but not during the third PNW, for a higher proportion of Drd1a expressing SpNs is detected in the VCtx and CTGF expressing SpNs in the SCtx. The darkness of the deep ocean limits the vision of diving predators, except when prey emit bioluminescence. It is hypothesized that deep-diving seals rely on highly developed whiskers to locate their prey. However, if and how seals use their whiskers while foraging in natural conditions remains unknown. We used animal-borne tags to show that free-ranging elephant seals use their whiskers for hydrodynamic prey sensing. Small, cheek-mounted video loggers documented seals actively protracting their whiskers in front of their mouths with rhythmic whisker movement, like terrestrial mammals exploring their environment. Seals focused their sensing effort at deep foraging depths, performing prolonged whisker protraction to detect, pursue, and capture prey. Feeding-event recorders with light sensors demonstrated that bioluminescence contributed to only about 20% of overall foraging success, confirming that whiskers play the primary role in sensing prey. Accordingly, visual prey detection complemented and enhanced prey capture. The whiskers' role highlights an evolutionary alternative to echolocation for adapting to the extreme dark of the deep ocean environment, revealing how sensory abilities shape foraging niche segregation in deep-diving mammals. Mammals typically have mobile facial whiskers, and our study reveals the significant function of whiskers in the natural foraging behavior of a marine predator. We demonstrate the importance of field-based sensory studies incorporating multimodality to better understand how multiple sensory systems are complementary in shaping the foraging success of predators.

Developing an artificial visual sensory system requires optoelectronic materials and devices that can mimic the behavior of biological synapses. Organic/polymeric semiconductors have emerged as promising candidates for optoelectronic synapses due to their tunable optoelectronic properties, mechanic flexibility, and biological compatibility. In this review, we discuss the recent progress in organic optoelectronic synaptic materials and devices, including their design principles, working mechanisms, and applications. We also highlight the challenges and opportunities in this field and provide insights into potential applications of these materials and devices in next‐generation artificial visual systems. Comprehensive insights into balance control of individuals with hearing impairment are compared with individuals with hearing. Primary sources were obtained from 7 databases including PubMed, LILACS, SCOPUS, CINAHL, PEDro, CENTRAL, and Web of Science. The search period extended from inception until January 5, 2022. The systematic review included 24 studies and 27 trials, with a total of 2,148 participants. The meta-analysis showed a significant difference in the average balance control between individuals with hearing impairment and individuals with hearing, with individuals with hearing having a favorable advantage (p = 0.001). Additionally, average balance control was found to be in favor of individuals with hearing (p = 0.001) when comparing individuals with hearing impairment who participated in sports. Finally, individuals with hearing impairment who participated in sports demonstrated a significantly higher average difference in balance control (p = 0.001) when compared to sedentary people with hearing impairment. Our meta-analysis results indicate a balance defect in individuals with hearing impairment compared to individuals with hearing. In addition, with increasing age, the balance in individuals with hearing impairment improved. Additionally, the dependence of individuals with hearing impairment on the visual and proprioception systems to maintain balance increased. Finally, there was more dependence on the proprioception than the visual system, while individuals with hearing had stronger average balance control than individuals with hearing impairment who participated in sports, when compared to sedentary people with hearing impairment. The water quality is the most important parameter for aquatic species health and growth. The condition is very critical and is essential to monitor continuously. Poor water quality will affect health, growth and ability of the animal to survive. These also affected their harvesting yields based on the amount and size of the animal. The main water parameters such dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, temperature, salinity and turbidity are monitored and control for good water quality. The data were acquired by the developed instrument and send wirelessly through GPRS/GSM module to cloud-based database. The data were retrieved and the water quality is predicted using fuzzy logic and multi-layer perceptron. MATLAB software was used for the model which is developed based on Mamdani fuzzy interface system. The membership functions of fuzzy were generated, as well as the simulation and analysis of the water quality system. Results show that the performance of fuzzy method can improve system performance in monitoring the water quality. This system also provides alert signals to farmers based on specific limit value for the water quality parameters. Neuroscience research has provided evidence that semantic information is stored in a distributed brain network involved in sensorimotor and linguistic processing. More specifically, according to the embodied cognition accounts, the representation of concepts is deemed as grounded in our bodily states. For these reasons, normative measures of words should provide relevant information about the extent to which each word embeds perceptual and action properties. In the present study, we collected ratings for 959 Italian nouns and verbs from 398 volunteers, recruited via an online platform. The words were mostly taken from the Italian adaptation of the Affective Norms for English Words (ANEW). A pool of 145 verbs was added to the original set. All the words were rated on 11 sensorimotor dimensions: six perceptual modalities (vision, audition, taste, smell, touch, and interoception) and five effectors (hand-arm, foot-leg, torso, mouth, head). The new verbs were also rated on the ANEW dimensions. Results showed good reliability and consistency with previous studies. Relations between perceptual and motor dimensions are described and interpreted, along with relations between the sensorimotor and the affective dimensions. The currently developed dataset represents an important novelty, as it includes different word classes, i.e., both nouns and verbs, and integrates ratings of both sensorimotor and affective dimensions, along with other psycholinguistic parameters; all features only partially accomplished in previous studies. For a ubiquitous sensing in Internet of Things (IoT), a large number of low-cost devices with ultra-low power massive communications are required. Heavy cloud computing pressure and low-intelligent traditional front-end hardware are major challenges for extending sensing in IoT applications. While state-of-the-art is focusing on the cloud-edge platform solutions and the optimization of the performed and transmitted data, this paper proposes an intelligent equipment hardware for smart IoT devices. A radiofrequency (RF) neuromorphic spiking sensor is implemented in BiCMOS 55 nm technology, comprising a wake-up receiver with a spiking pre-processing neural system (artificial synapses and neurons). The proposed system can identify bit patterns of two signals modulated using On–Off Keying at a frequency of 2.4 GHz received from two IoT receivers. Moreover, the system can recognize the orientation of the mobile IoT transmitter. This can be achieved based on the output spiking frequency of the neuron responsiveness over the difference between the input powers. Post-layout simulations demonstrate that the orientation of the source can be detected for various distances between the source and the two receivers. Significant performances are obtained with 1.1 nW of total power consumption and 0.7 fJ/conv of energy efficiency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: Although studies have analyzed the relationship between frailty and human senses, few have comprehensively evaluated and examined their correlations. This study aimed to clarify the relationship between frailty and the senses of sight, hearing, smell, and taste. Methods: The subjects were outpatients at the Locomo Frail Outpatient Clinic. Sensory organ items were evaluated subjectively, and frailty was classified as nonfrail or frail using the Kihon Checklist. Univariate analysis was performed using the presence or absence of frailty as the dependent variable. Logistic regression analysis (forced entry method) was performed for the variables that showed significant differences. Results: A total of 269 and 226 participants were assigned to the nonfrail and frail groups, respectively. The frequency of sensory organ impairment was 10.1% for taste, 12.7% for smell, 44.6% for vision, and 58.3% for hearing. Univariate analysis using the presence or absence of frailty as the dependent variable was determined to be significant for years of education, number of medications, Geriatric Depression Scale, Mini‐Mental State Examination, Mini Nutritional Assessment–Short Form, grip strength, gait speed, sense of taste, sense of smell, sense of vision, and sense of hearing. Logistic regression analysis using the presence or absence of frailty as the dependent variable, adjusted for age, showed significant correlations with the Geriatric Depression Scale, gait speed, Mini Nutritional Assessment–Short Form, and olfactory impairment. Conclusions: Olfactory impairment had the strongest correlation with frailty. Although the sense of smell decreases with disease and aging, olfactory impairment may be correlated with frailty as a symptom of neurodegenerative diseases. Geriatr Gerontol Int 2023; 23: 871–876. IntroductionIn a significant number of NICUs, mothers are unable to provide enough maternal milk to feed their premature babies, so healthcare workers rely on human milk banks. Unfortunately, this service is not available in many countries, such as Peru, where premature infants receive formula. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of multisensory stimulation on mother's own milk production.MethodsParticipants in this study were postpartum mothers of preterm infants 27–37 weeks gestational age. The participants were assigned to three groups: (1) audiovisual stimulation (SAV) (n = 17), (2) audiovisual and olfactory stimulation (SAVO) (n = 17), and (3) control (n = 16). A questionnaire was used to collect demographic and obstetric data, including a record of mother's own milk volume.ResultsThere was no significant difference between the SAV, SAVO and control groups regarding age, marital status, education level, occupation, number of children, mode of delivery, Apgar and birth weight. Abstract Background A one-off sensory wellbeing workshop has been developed to help patients with eating disorders (ED) manage sensory sensitivities. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the outcomes of the workshop in online versus face-to-face (F2F) formats among a sample of patients with ED. Methods Cumulative link models were applied to the outcome measures (awareness of sensory wellbeing, awareness of strategies to enhance sensory wellbeing, and confidence in managing sensory wellbeing) to test the differences between online and F2F workshops. Participants’ ratings of usefulness of the workshop were also compared between online and F2F workshops. Results A total of 14 workshops (4 online and 10 F2F) were run from 2020 to 2023. All participants reported significant and substantial improvements in all outcome measures. There was no significant difference in outcomes between online and F2F workshops. The majority of patients rated the workshops as useful. Conclusions Both online and face-to-face formats of the sensory workshop led to improvement in sensory wellbeing management for patients with ED. Future studies are warranted to test the impact of the workshop on ED treatment outcomes.

Fatigue, defined as a subjective lack of physical and/or mental energy, is a clinical symptom highly characterizing multiple sclerosis (MS). The present study utilized a novel approach to the study of fatigue, examining first person-mental imagery of the symptom. Eighteen right-handed patients with MS (14F, 4 M, mean age 45.8 ± 8.15 years) were evaluated and were compared to nineteen healthy controls (10F, 9 M, mean age 43.15 ± 8.34 years) Patients were all in relapsing remitting form and no patient had presented relapses in the 6 months prior to inclusion in the study. We evaluated their behavioral performance and fMRI activations. We used an fMRI paradigm used to trigger first person-mental imagery of fatigue, through short sentences describing the principal manifestations of fatigue. Participants were asked to imagine the corresponding sensations (Sensory Imagery, SI). As a control, they had to imagine the visual scenes (Visual Imagery, VI) described in short phrases. They made a vividness rating by pressing the corresponding button.Behaviorally, we found that patients’ mean scores at the Multidimensional Fatigue Symptom Inventory for the general scale, physical scale, and mental scale were significantly higher than healthy controls (p = 0.05, p = 0.002, p = 0.006 respectively), but not for the emotional scale and for vigor scale (p = 0.207, n.s., p = 0.06, n.s.). In the imagery fMRI task, patients were significantly slower (mean reaction times and standard deviation: 2.24 s ± 0.33) than controls (mean reaction times and standard deviation: 1.918 s ± 0.455) for the SI task (Z=-2.058, p = 0.040), while no significant difference was found for the VI task.Regarding brain mapping, our main result is a group by task interaction. The SI task (vs. VI task) in healthy controls (relative to patients) increased activation in the left inferior parietal lobule. These preliminary results indicate that fatigue is related to dysfunctions in higher-order aspects of motor control, given the role of the posterior parietal lobe in motor planning and multisensory integration.

ABSTRACT Aromatoleum aromaticum EbN1T anaerobically degrades phenol, p-cresol, and p-ethylphenol, each via a distinct peripheral pathway. The compound-specific regulation of each pathway is proposed to occur on the transcriptional level in the case of phenol supposedly mediated by the one-component system PheR. To confirm its predicted function, we generated an unmarked, in-frame deletion mutant (ΔpheR). This mutant did not express the ppsA1 gene, which encodes the A1 subunit of phenol-activating phenylphosphate synthase. The expression of ppsA1 was restored by in trans complementation of pheR into the ΔpheR background. The responsiveness to phenol was studied in vivo in benzoate-limited anaerobic cultures by adding, upon benzoate depletion, single defined pulses of phenol (from 100 µM down to 0.1 nM). Time-resolved, targeted transcript profiling by qRT-PCR revealed a response threshold for ppsA1 expression of 30‒50 nM phenol. Notably, ppsA1 expression could not be induced by p-cresol or p-ethylphenol. Conversely, lack of expression was also observed for the additional target genes cmh (p-cresol degradation) and acsA1 (p-ethylphenol degradation) applying phenol or p-ethylphenol as well as phenol or p-cresol as stimuli. Thus, the sensory proteins PheR, PcrS, and EtpR should be highly selective for phenol, p-cresol, and p-ethylphenol, respectively. The implicated incapability of cross-stimulus binding was corroborated by comparing the predicted 3D structural models of the proteins’ sensory domains. While the ligand-binding pockets share the conserved hydroxy group-anchoring histidine and tryptophane, their distal faces in PcrS and EtpR are, compared to PheR, enlarged to accommodate the bulkier methyl (p-cresol) and ethyl group (p-ethylphenol), respectively. IMPORTANCE Aromatic compounds are globally abundant organic molecules with a multitude of natural and anthropogenic sources, underpinning the relevance of their biodegradation. A. aromaticum EbN1T is a well-studied environmental betaproteobacterium specialized on the anaerobic degradation of aromatic compounds. The here studied responsiveness toward phenol in conjunction with the apparent high ligand selectivity (non-promiscuity) of its PheR sensor and those of the related p-cresol (PcrS) and p-ethylphenol (EtpR) sensors are in accord with the substrate-specificity and biochemical distinctiveness of the associated degradation pathways. Furthermore, the present findings advance our general understanding of the substrate-specific regulation of the strain’s remarkable degradation network and of the concentration thresholds below which phenolic compounds become essentially undetectable and as a consequence should escape substantial biodegradation. Furthermore, the findings may inspire biomimetic sensor designs for detecting and quantifying phenolic contaminants in wastewater or environments.

Objectives: The aim of the study was to investigate the impact of 6-month aviation practice on the improvement of physical fitness and cognitive abilities of cadet pilots. Materials and methods: Twenty cadet pilots (men) with an average age of 22 from the Polish Air Force Academy were tested. Two tests of effort were conducted: before (test I) and after (test II) practical flights. Test of physical effort relyed on the number of rotations of looping accomplished. When performing rotations on looping, in tests I and II, the percentage level of task performance was assessed using a diagnostic and training device. Tasks for the exerciser were sent wirelessly to the glasses from the operator's position. The heart rate (HR) and blood pressure were measured with a camera-type Microlife AG. Results: In test II, there was a statistically significant improvement in the percentage of task completion (p < 0.01) and an insignificant improvement in the performance of rotations on looping compared to test I. After Test I and II demonstrated a statistically significant increase in HR and systolic blood pressure when compared to before test values. Test II illustrated a significant decrease in systolic blood pressure after effort (p < 0.05) with regard to test I. Conclusion: The study showed that cadet aviation practice ameliorated their physical fitness and cognitive skills, as well as helped to diminish their situational stress, which resulted in a decrease in systolic blood pressure after test II. The QBIT theory is a recently introduced multi-disciplinary approach to the problem of consciousness. One of the main axioms of the theory is that when information-theoretic certainty of an observer about a stimulus goes beyond a certain threshold, the observer becomes conscious of that stimulus. This axiom could provide an explanation for how the brain generates consciousness. In short, the QBIT theory suggests that the brain generates consciousness by reducing the entropy of its internal representations below a critical threshold. This paper explains how the brain gradually minimizes the entropy of its internal representations and consequently generate minimum-entropy representations (also known as conscious representations or qualia). Human health is facing a host of new threats linked to unbalanced diets, including high-sugar diet (HSD), which contributes to the development of both metabolic and behavioral disorders. Studies have shown that diet-induced metabolic dysfunctions can be transmitted to multiple generations of offspring and exert long-lasting health burden. Meanwhile, whether and how diet-induced behavioral abnormalities can be transmitted to the offspring remains largely unclear. Here, we showed that ancestral HSD exposure suppressed sweet sensitivity and feeding behavior in the offspring in Drosophila. These behavioral deficits were transmitted through the maternal germline and companied by the enhancement of H3K27me3 modifications. PCL-PRC2 complex, a major driver of H3K27 trimethylation, was upregulated by ancestral HSD exposure, and disrupting its activity eliminated the transgenerational inheritance of sweet sensitivity and feeding behavior deficits. Elevated H3K27me3 inhibited the expression of a transcriptional factor Cad and suppressed sweet sensitivity of the sweet-sensing gustatory neurons, reshaping the sweet perception and feeding behavior of the offspring. Taken together, we uncovered a novel molecular mechanism underlying behavioral abnormalities spanning multiple generations of offspring upon ancestral HSD exposure, which would contribute to the further understanding of long-term health risk of unbalanced diet.

This work proposes the design of a low-cost sensory glove system that complements the operation of a 3D-printed mechanical hand prosthesis, providing it with the ability to detect touch, locate it and even measure the intensity of associated forces. Firstly, the production of the prosthetic model was performed using 3D printing, which allowed for quick and cheap production of a robotic hand with the implementation of a mechanical system that allows controlled movements with high performance and with the possibility of easily replacing each piece individually. Secondly, we performed the construction and instrumentation of a complementary sensory mimicry add-on system, focusing on the ability to sense touch as the primary target. Using piezoresistive sensors attached to the palm of the glove, a multi-sensor system was developed that was able to locate and quantify forces exerted on the glove. Background: A one-off sensory wellbeing workshop has been developed to help patients with eating disorders (ED) manage sensory sensitivities. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the outcomes of the workshop in online versus face-to-face (F2F) formats among a sample of patients with ED. Methods: Cumulative link models were applied to the outcome measures (awareness of sensory wellbeing, awareness of strategies to enhance sensory wellbeing, and confidence in managing sensory wellbeing) to test the differences between online and F2F workshops. Participants' ratings of usefulness of the workshop were also compared between online and F2F workshops. Results: A total of 14 workshops (4 online and 10 F2F) were run from 2020 to 2023. All participants reported significant and substantial improvements in all outcome measures. There was no significant difference in outcomes between online and F2F workshops. The majority of patients rated the workshops as useful. Conclusions: Both online and face-to-face formats of the sensory workshop led to improvement in sensory wellbeing management for patients with ED. Future studies are warranted to test the impact of the workshop on ED treatment outcomes. Plain English summary: People with eating disorders often have sensory issues, which can include being too sensitive to some senses (hearing, smell or taste, for example) or not sensitive enough. Explaining how the sensory system works and developing helpful strategies to manage sensory difficulties could be beneficial in the process of therapy. To try and support this, clinicians and researchers designed a sensory wellbeing workshop to help people become more aware of their sensory wellbeing and teach them strategies to manage their sensory wellbeing. The workshop can be delivered online or face-to-face. This study examined the feedback for online and face-to-face workshops. We found that both formats were helpful for people with eating disorders. Loss of primary neuronal inputs inevitably strikes every neural circuit. The deafferented circuit could propagate, amplify, or mitigate input loss, thus affecting the circuit's output. How the deafferented circuit contributes to the effect on the output is poorly understood because of lack of control over loss of and access to circuit elements. Here, we control the timing and degree of rod photoreceptor ablation in mature mouse retina and uncover compensation. Following loss of half of the rods, rod bipolar cells mitigate the loss by preserving voltage output. Such mitigation allows partial recovery of ganglion cell responses. We conclude that rod death is compensated for in the circuit because ganglion cell responses to stimulation of half of the rods in an unperturbed circuit are weaker than responses after death of half of the rods. The dominant mechanism of such compensation includes homeostatic regulation of inhibition to balance the loss of excitation.

Aims and Objectives: The primary objective of the present study was to assess and compare the auditory and visual reaction time among male and female young adults. The secondary objective was to compare auditory and visual reaction time’s right- and left-hand responses. Materials and Methods: A total of 120 male and female young adults were part of the study after obtaining informed consent. Auditory and visual reaction time was assessed using the RT apparatus manufactured by Anand Agencies, Pune. The instrument can assess visual reaction time for the green and red light and auditory reaction time for tone and click sounds of both right- and left-hand responses. Results: Age and weight were significantly different between males and females, whereas height was not significant. The auditory and visual reaction times were not significantly different between the male and female participants. Conclusion: The present study reveals that there is no significant difference between the auditory and visual reaction time among male and female young adults. There is a need for more detailed studies to testify to the results.

An intelligent optical system of medical express diagnostics has been developed and tested. A method of visualizing the oxygen status of biological tissues in the form of "digital images" describing the general functional state of the human body was demonstrated. The possibility of using methods of principal components and hierarchical clustering coupled with optical methods for detecting forms of hemoglobin in biological tissues for noninvasive monitoring and express diagnostics of the oxygen status of the human body was shown. The results of the study indicate the possibility of differentiating the subjects into risk groups according to the indications of optical measurements. Unlike pulse oximetry, the use of which is common to determine the level of blood oxygenation, the presented method is able to assess the peripheral oxygen status, due to this it is possible to detect thrombosis and limb ischemia in time. During development of the vertebrate sensory system, many important components like the sense organs and cranial sensory ganglia arise within the head and neck. Two progenitor populations, the neural crest, and cranial ectodermal placodes, contribute to these developing vertebrate peripheral sensory structures. The interactions and contributions of these cell populations to the development of the lens, olfactory, otic, pituitary gland, and cranial ganglia are vital for appropriate peripheral nervous system development. Here, we review the origins of both neural crest and placode cells at the neural plate border of the early vertebrate embryo and investigate the molecular and environmental signals that influence specification of different sensory regions. Finally, we discuss the underlying molecular pathways contributing to the complex vertebrate sensory system from an evolutionary perspective, from basal vertebrates to amniotes. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by impaired social communication and interaction associated with repetitive or stereotyped behaviour. Prenatal valproic acid (VPA) exposure in rodents is a commonly used model of ASD. Resveratrol (RSV) has been shown to prevent interneuronal and behavioural impairments in the VPA model. We investigated the effects of prenatal VPA exposure and RSV on the GABAergic synaptic transmission, brain oscillations and on the genic expression of interneuron‐associated transcription factor LHX6 in the primary somatosensory area (PSSA). Prenatal VPA exposure decreased the sIPSC and mIPSC frequencies and the sIPSC decay kinetics onto layers 4/5 pyramidal cells of PSSA. About 40% of VPA animals exhibited absence‐like spike–wave discharge (SWD) events associated with behaviour arrest and increased power spectrum density of delta, beta and gamma cortical oscillations. VPA animals had reduced LHX6 expression in PSSA, but VPA animals treated with RSV had no changes on synaptic inhibition or LHX6 expression in the PSSA. SWD events associated with behaviour arrest and the abnormal increment of cortical oscillations were also absent in VPA animals treated with RSV. These findings provide new venues to investigate the role of both RSV and VPA in the pathophysiology of ASD and highlight the VPA animal model as an interesting tool to investigate pathways related to the aetiology and possible future therapies to this neuropsychiatric disorder. The nucleus posterior tuberis (NPT) in teleost fishes, also called posterior tuberal nucleus, is situated in the posterior tuberculum of the diencephalon. It is fused across the midline and densely packed with small cells, but little is known about its connections. In this study, the afferent and efferent connections of the NPT were examined by means of tracer applications of the carbocyanine dye DiI in the firemouth cichlid, Thorichthys meeki. Retrogradely labeled cell bodies were found in the corpus mamillare and nucleus periventricularis of the inferior lobe; and anterogradely labeled terminal fibers were detected in the medial zone of the dorsal telencephalon, medial part of the nucleus lateralis tuberis, dorsal posterior thalamic nucleus, torus lateralis, medial part of the nucleus diffusus of the inferior lobe, and tectum opticum. All these connections show an ipsilateral tendency. The NPT is apparently a significant relay nucleus in the diencephalon of T. meeki , and possibly involved in a variety of feedback circuits. It seems also to be part of a tecto-hypothalamo-telencephalic pathway in cichlids. The chytrid fungus Blastocladiella emersonii produces spores with swimming tails (zoospores); these cells can sense and swim toward light. Interest in this species stems from ongoing efforts to develop B. emersonii as a model for understanding the evolution of phototaxis and the molecular cell biology of the associated optogenetic circuits. Here, we report a highly contiguous genome assembly and gene annotation of the B. emersonii American Type Culture Collection 22665 strain. We integrate a PacBio long-read library with an Illumina paired-end genomic sequence survey leading to an assembly of 21 contigs totaling 34.27 Mb. Using these data, we assess the diversity of sensory system encoding genes. These analyses identify a rich complement of G-protein-coupled receptors, ion transporters, and nucleotide cyclases, all of which have been diversified by domain recombination and tandem duplication. In many cases, these domain combinations have led to the fusion of a protein domain to a transmembrane domain, tying a putative signaling function to the cell membrane. This pattern is consistent with the diversification of the B. emersonii sensory-signaling systems, which likely plays a varied role in the complex life cycle of this fungus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
