Abstract

MotivationExtracellular vesicles (EVs) are spherical bilayered proteolipids, harboring various bioactive molecules. Due to the complexity of the vesicular nomenclatures and components, online searches for EV-related publications and vesicular components are currently challenging.ResultsWe present an improved version of EVpedia, a public database for EVs research. This community web portal contains a database of publications and vesicular components, identification of orthologous vesicular components, bioinformatic tools and a personalized function. EVpedia includes 6879 publications, 172 080 vesicular components from 263 high-throughput datasets, and has been accessed more than 65 000 times from more than 750 cities. In addition, about 350 members from 73 international research groups have participated in developing EVpedia. This free web-based database might serve as a useful resource to stimulate the emerging field of EV research.Availability and implementationThe web site was implemented in PHP, Java, MySQL and Apache, and is freely available at http://evpedia.info.

15. Systematic determination of the optimized Zr content of Ba(ZrxTi1-x)O3with high dielectric constant at room temperature for high-voltage system application

Abstract

In this study, by replacing the B-site element in BaTiO3, a ferroelectric material, with an element with a larger ionic radius, a ferroelectric material with high permittivity at room temperature was synthesized. The powders were prepared by solid-state reaction to perform lattice substitution with Zr4+(0.72 Å), which has a larger ionic radius than Ti4+(0.605 Å). To perform effective solid-state reaction and better understand the correlation between variables, this study introduced a design of experiment (DOE) based on the orthogonal array (OA) method included in the PIAno software. By substituting 0.222 mol of Zr, which has a large ionic radius, the crystal structure was deformed through an effective diffuse phase transition (DPT), and this resulted in the largest improvement in permittivity at room temperature. In addition, the powder, which underwent solid-state reaction at 1300 °C, formed the densest structure during sintering, which established the conditions for realizing the best dielectric properties. These results can be utilized as a key material for improving the properties of passive devices used in high-voltage industrial systems in societies undergoing the fourth industrial revolution.

Abstract

Licochalcone H (LCH) is a phenolic compound synthetically derived from licochalcone C (LCC) that exerts anticancer activity. In this study, we investigated the anticancer activity of LCH in human skin cancer A375 and A431 cells. The 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol- 2-yl)-5-(3-carboxymethoxyphenyl)-2-(4-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium (MTS) cell viability assay was used to evaluate the antiproliferative activity of LCH. Cell cycle distribution and the induction of apoptosis were analyzed by flow cytometry. Western blotting assays were performed to detect the levels of proteins involved in cell cycle progression, apoptosis, and the JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathway. LCH inhibited the growth of cells in dose- and time-dependent manners. The annexin V/propidium iodide double staining assay revealed that LCH induced apoptosis, and the LCH-induced apoptosis was accompanied by cell cycle arrest in the G1 phase. Western blot analysis showed that the phosphorylation of JAK2 and STAT3 was decreased by treatment with LCH. The inhibition of the JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathway by pharmacological inhibitors against JAK2/STAT3 (cryptotanshinone (CTS) and S3I-201) simulated the antiproliferative effect of LCH suggesting that LCH induced apoptosis by modulating JAK2/STAT3 signaling.

Abstract

In this study, the anatase–rutile phase fraction of TiO2, which would play a vital role in the solid-state synthesis of BaTiO3, was controlled to form a composite phase. The composite TiO2 was applied to a solid-state synthesis reaction, and the tetragonality, dielectric properties, and microstructure of the resulting BaTiO3 powders were analyzed under different synthesis conditions of TiO2. Furthermore, a comparative analysis of solid-state-synthesized BaTiO3 powders prepared using anatase, rutile, and mixed (anatase + rutile) TiO2 was performed to elucidate the mechanism of improvement in the sintering behavior and dielectric properties of the BaTiO3 powder synthesized using the composite TiO2. As a result of applying composite TiO2, BaTiO3 powder with excellent tetragonality was synthesized. In addition, it is effective in powder growth and the control of powder morphology, so sintering and dielectric properties can be improved at relatively low temperatures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

43. Echinatin induces reactive oxygen species‐mediated apoptosis via JNK/p38 MAPK signaling pathway in colorectal cancer cells.

Abstract

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a very common and deadly cancer worldwide, and oxaliplatin is used as first‐line chemotherapy. However, resistance usually develops, limiting treatment. Echinatin (Ech) is the main component of licorice and exhibits various therapeutic effects on inflammation‐mediated diseases and cancer, ischemia/reperfusion, and liver injuries. The present study elucidated the underlying molecular mechanism of Ech‐induced apoptosis in both oxaliplatin‐sensitive (HT116 and HT29) and ‐resistant (HCT116‐OxR and HT29‐OxR) CRC cells. To evaluate the antiproliferative activities of Ech, we performed MTT and soft agar assays. Ech reduced viability, colony size, and numbers of CRC cells. The underlying molecular mechanisms were explored by various flow cytometry analyses. Ech‐induced annexin‐V stained cells, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, cell cycle arrest, JNK/p38 MAPK activation, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, mitochondrial membrane potential depolarization, and multi‐caspase activity. In addition apoptosis‐, cell cycle‐, and ER stress‐related protein levels were confirmed by western blotting. Moreover, we verified ROS‐mediated cell death by treatment with inhibitors such as N‐acetyl‐L‐cysteine, SP600125, and SB203580. Taken together, Ech exhibits anticancer activity in oxaliplatin‐sensitive and ‐resistant CRCs by inducing ROS‐mediated apoptosis through the JNK/p38 MAPK signaling pathway. This is the first study to show that Ech has the potential to treat drug‐resistant CRC, providing new directions for therapeutic strategies targeting drug‐resistant CRC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
