Through IR microimaging the spatially and temporally resolved development of the CO2 concentration in a ZIF‐8@6FDA‐DAM mixed matrix membrane was visualized during transient adsorption. By recording the evolution of the CO2 concentration, it is observed that the CO2 molecules propagate from the ZIF‐8 filler, which acts as a transport "highway", towards the surrounding polymer. A high‐CO2‐concentration layer is formed at the MOF/polymer interface, which becomes more pronounced at higher CO2 gas pressures. A microscopic explanation of the origins of this phenomenon is suggested by means of molecular modeling. By applying a computational methodology combining quantum and force‐field based calculations, the formation of microvoids at the MOF/polymer interface is predicted. Grand Canonical Monte Carlo simulations further demonstrate that CO2 tends to preferentially reside in these microvoids, which is expected to facilitate CO2 accumulation at the interface.

The use of an azine-linked covalent organic framework (ACOF-1) as filler in mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) has been studied for the separation of CO2 from N2. To better understand the mechanisms that govern separation in complex composites, MMMs were prepared with different loadings of ACOF-1 and three different polymers as continuous phase: low flux-mid selectivity Matrimid®, mid flux-high selectivity Polyactive™ and high flux-low selectivity 6FDA:DAM. The homogeneous distribution of ACOF-1 together with the good adhesion between the ACOF-1 particles and the polymer matrices were confirmed by scanning electron microscopy. In mixed-gas CO2/N2 separation a clear influence of the polymer used was observed on the performance of the composite membranes. While for Matrimid® and 6FDA:DAM an overall enhancement of the polymer's separation properties could be achieved, in case of Polyactive™ penetration of the more flexible polymer into the COF porosity resulted in a decreased membrane permeability. The best improvement was obtained for Matrimid®-based MMMs, for which a selectivity increase from 29 to 35, together with an enhancement in permeability from 9.5 to 17.7 Barrer for 16 wt% COF loading, was observed. Our results demonstrate that the combination of the filler-polymeric matrix pair chosen is crucial. For a given filler the polymer performance improvement strongly depends on the polymeric matrix selected, where a good match between the discontinuous and continuous phase, both in the terms of compatibility and gas separation properties, is necessary to optimize membrane performance.

En los últimos años se ha empezado a sustituir el uso de las zeolitas (aluminosilicatos porosos cristalinos) por el de los metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) dados los inconvenientes que éstas muestran, como la limitada incorporación de iones metálicos y pequeños tamaños de poro que causan problemas difusionales. Los MOFs son compuestos organometálicos tridimensionales cristalinos y porosos formados por la unión covalente coordinada de iones o clústeres metálicos y moléculas orgánicas, denominadas ligandos. El tamaño de poro y la funcionalidad química de estos compuestos se pueden adaptar de manera más sencilla que en las zeolitas y, gracias a los grandes volúmenes de poro y áreas específicas de los MOFs, entre otras propiedades, presentan un gran número de aplicaciones, por ejemplo, catálisis, adsorción, encapsulación de aditivos, separación de gases, etc. Por otro lado, en el 2006 se descrubrieron los zeolite imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs), una nueva subclase de MOFs caracterizada por presentar topologías zeolíticas y ligandos tipo imidazolato. Así, el ZIF-8 y ZIF-11 poseen las topologías SOD y RHO, respectivamente, mientras que el ZIF-20 muestra el tipo LTA. Algunos ZIFs se distinguen por su estabilidad térmica y química y su capacidad de adsorción, resultando muy útiles, por ejemplo, en procesos de separación. En este Proyecto Fin de Carrera se ha realizado una serie de síntesis en la que se emplearon 5 ligandos imidazolato diferentes. El trabajo desarrollado se apoyó, en un principio, en las condiciones del ZIF-8, ZIF-11 y ZIF-20 y se modificaron parámetros como la concentración de metal, la temperatura, el ratio metal:ligando, el tiempo de reacción, el disolvente, etc. Los productos así obtenidos se caracterizaron por diversas técnicas (difracción de rayos X, análisis termogravimétrico, espectroscopia infrarroja por transformada de Fourier, microscopía electrónica de barrido, etc.) para determinar si éstos eran cristalinos y porosos y, en tal caso, caracterizarlos de manera más exhaustiva para confirmar la obtención de un nuevo MOF y establecer su estructura cristalina, composición, estabilidad, propiedades, etc. A pesar de que no se ha cumplido el objetivo del Proyecto, se han obtenido resultados esperanzadores que hacen confiar en el descubrimiento de un nuevo MOF. De todos los productos sintetizados destacan dos por su tendencia a la cristalinidad y la posibilidad de que tengan topologías parecidas al tipo SOD y LTA. Igualmente, se han conseguido resultados interesantes con otros materiales a partir de los cuales también pueden seguir realizándose síntesis. Así pues, es posible que el nuevo esté más cerca.
