Industry is one of the largest energy consuming sectors creating a great environment for energy efficiency improvements. Thermal energy storage might be one of the attractive technologies for energy efficiency improvements in heat production because it is flexible in heat load balancing. This study analysed the improvement potential of the energy efficiency at a paper mill located in the Northern Europe. The mill mainly uses mechanical pulping for papermaking. Process heat is produced in a power plant combusting biomass and natural gas as a main fuels. The first aim of this study is to identify potential improvements and limitations when natural gas usage is decreased at the mill by replacing it with biomass and steam load fluctuations are balanced using a heat storage for steam (Case 1). The second main goal of this study is to determine potential improvements and limitations if excess heat produced in the summer is stored in a long term heat storage (Case 2). In both cases, heat storage options are compared to an option that uses drying of biomass instead of the heat storage. Cases are assessed by evaluating technical feasibility and economic savings of the options. Evaluations of the heat storage and drying options are based on simulation models using data that was recorded at the mill. Case 1 is simulated in three scenarios: Scenario A (20% decrease in natural gas usage), Scenario B (40% decrease in natural gas usage) and Scenario C (60% decrease in natural gas usage). This study concluded that steam accumulators offer more feasible option for balancing the heat load than belt dryers in Case 1. Furthermore, scenario B (40% decrease in natural gas usage) seems to be the most feasible scenario for steam accumulator in Case 1. In Case 2, the belt dryer option provides better operational characteristics for utilizing excess hot water than the hot water tank storage option with annual savings of 0.158M€., Teollisuus on yksi suurimmista energiaa kuluttavista sektoreista, mikä luo hyvät mahdollisuudet energiatehokkuuden parantamiselle. Työn ensimmäisenä päätavoitteena on määrittää potentiaaliset hyödyt ja rajoitteet, kun maakaasun käyttöä vähennetään lisäämällä biomassan osuutta höyryntuotannossa ja lämpövarastolla tasataan höyrykuorman vaihtelut (Case 1). Toisena tavoitteena on arvioida potentiaaliset hyödyt ja rajoitteet, jos kesäisin tuotettu hukkalämpö varastoitaisiin lämpövarastoon (Case 2). Molemmissa tapauksissa lämpövaraston käyttöä verrataan tilanteeseen, jossa biomassan kuivausta hyödynnetään lämpövaraston sijasta. Tapauksia arvioidaan teknisen toteutettavuuden ja taloudellisten säästöjen perusteella. Lämpövarasto- ja kuivausvaihtoehtojen arviointi perustuu työssä tehtyihin simulointimalleihin, joissa käytettiin paperitehtaalla mitattua dataa. Höyrykuorman tasausta (Case 1) tarkasteltiin kolmessa eri tilanteessa, joissa maakaasun käyttöä vähennettiin 20% (Scenario A), 40% (Scenario B) ja 60% (Scenario C). Tulosten perusteella höyryakku on toteutettavuudeltaan ja taloudellisilta säästöiltään parempi vaihtoehto höyrykuorman tasauksessa (Case 1) kuin kuljetintyyppinen kuivuri. Lisäksi, 40 % vähennys maakaasun käytössä (Scenario B) näyttäisi olevan paras tapaus höyryakun käytölle. Kuljetintyyppinen kuivuri on toteutettavuudeltaan parempi vaihtoehto kuin lämpöakku hukkalämmön hyödyntämiseen (Case 2). Sillä saavutettiin 0.158 M€ vuosittaiset säästöt.

It has been recognized that the commonly used discrete dipole approximation (DDA) for calculating the optical properties of plasmonic materials may exhibit slow convergence for a certain region of the complex refractive index. In this work we investigate the quantitative accuracy of DDA for particles of different shapes, with silver as the plasmonic material. As expected, the accuracy and convergence of the method as a function of the number of dipoles is relatively good for solid spheres and rounded cubes whose size is of the same order as the wavelength of the localized surface plasmon resonance in silver. However, we find that for solid particles much smaller than the resonance wavelength, and for silver-silica core-shell particles in particular, DDA does not converge to the correct limit even for 10(6) dipoles. We also find that the slow convergence tends to be accompanied by strong, discretization dependent oscillations in the particle's internal electric field. We demonstrate that the main factor behind the slow convergence of the DDA is due to inaccuracies in the plasmonic resonances of the dipoles at the surface of the particles. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Nanofluids are a modern type of heat transfer fluids, in which typically solid nano-sized particles (d < 100 nm) are dispersed in conventional heat transfer fluid, such as water or oils. In earlier studies, nanofluids have shown anomalous enhancement of convective heat transfer that cannot be explained with conventional correlations. Water-based nanofluids with volume fraction of only a few percents have typically yielded tens of percents higher Nusselt numbers than water when compared with equal Reynolds numbers. In addition, several studies suggest that the addition of nanoparticles enhances convective heat transfer without significant penalty in pressure losses. In this Master’s Thesis, impacts of concentration, particle size and thermal conductivity of particle material on convective heat transfer of nanofluids are experimentally examined. For this purpose, water-based nanofluids containing SiO2, micelle, polystyrene or Al2O3 particles were prepared and measured with an annular tube heat exchanger. The heat transfer measurements also included the pressure losses in order to study the suitability of nanofluids for practical heat transfer applications. The fluids were characterized thoroughly for the sake of an accurate analysis: viscosities, thermal conductivities, densities, particle sizes and zeta potentials of the samples were measured. Furthermore, analysis methods were developed in order to minimize the experimental errors. In the experimental series, all nanofluids performed as Gnielinski correlation predicts and thus, no anomalous enhancement was observed. The nanofluids reached slightly higher Nusselt numbers than water when compared on the basis of equal Reynolds numbers, but no difference was observed when the effect of Prandtl number was taken into account. In comparison on the basis of equal pumping powers, the nanofluids showed equal or poorer performance than water. Increasing particle concentration was observed to lower the heat transfer performanc, Nanonesteet ovat uudentyyppisiä lämmönsiirtonesteitä, joissa nanokokoisia partikkeleita (d < 100nm) on dispergoitu perinteiseen lämmönsiirtonesteeseen, kuten veteen tai öljyihin. Aiemmissa tutkimuksissa nanonesteiden konvektiolämmönsiirron on havaittu olevan poikkeuksellisen tehokasta, eikä ilmiötä ole pystytty selittämään perinteisten lämmönsiirtokorrelaatioiden avulla. Jo muutaman tilavuusprosentin partikkeliosuuden on todettu kasvattavan Nusseltin lukua kymmenillä prosenteilla veteen nähden Reynoldsin lukujen ollessa yhtä suuret. Lisäksi useiden tutkimusten mukaan nanopartikkelien lisäys tehostaa konvektiivista lämmönsiirtoa ilman merkittävästi kasvaneita painehäviöitä. Tässä diplomityössä tutkitaan kokeellisesti konsentraation, partikkelikoon sekä partikkelien lämmönjohtavuuden vaikutusta nanonesteiden pakotettuun konvektiolämmönsiirtoon. Työssä mitattiin sisäkkäisputkilämmönsiirtimessä vesipohjaisia SiO2-, miselli-, polystyreeni- ja Al2O3-nanonesteitä, joiden pitoisuus vaihteli välillä 0,09-1,81 til-% ja partikkelikoko välillä 8-58 nm. Lämmönsiirtomittausten yhteydessä mitattiin myös painehäviöt, jotta nesteiden tehokkuutta käytännön lämmönsiirtosovelluksissa pystyttiin arvioimaan. Tulosten luotettavaa analysointia varten mitattiin myös tarvittavat nanonesteiden aineominaisuudet: partikkelikokojakauma, zeta-potentiaali, viskositeetti, lämmönjohtavuus sekä tiheys. Lisäksi kehitettiin analysointimenetelmiä kokeellisten virheiden minimoimiseksi. Mittaussarjoissa kaikkien nanonesteiden todettiin käyttäytyvän tavanomaisille nesteille kehitetyn Gnielinskin korrelaation mukaisesti, eikä poikkeavaa tehostumista havaittu. Nanonesteiden Nusseltin luvut olivat hieman suurempia kuin veden yhtä suurilla Reynoldsin luvuilla verrattuina, mutta eroja ei havaittu, kun Prandtlin luvun vaikutus otettiin huomioon analysoinnissa. Mass transfer in non-porous polymeric hollow fiber membrane modules is studied via experiments and mathematical models. Two processes, the separation of gases and gas transport in liquid-gas membrane contactors, are investigated. An experimental setup was built for the separation of air in a small Nagasep M60-AS module which consisted of 3000 tubular and selective silicone rubber membranes. Under pressure, oxygen penetrates the material selectively over nitrogen, resulting in oxygen-enriched air in the permeate stream and oxygen-depleted air in the residue stream. The influence of crucial process parameters and the flow pattern on the separation process is studied. Experimental data are used to validate mathematical models. Two models describing the gas separation process are developed. Model I is based on mass transfer resistances in the membrane and in forming concentration boundary layers adjacent to the membrane surfaces. The influence of concentration polarization is estimated with correlations presented in the literature. In Model II, the separation of gases is described by general momentum and mass transfer differential equations which are numerically solved with the finite element method. A reasonable agreement between the experimental data and simulation results is found. The molar fraction of oxygen was experimentally elevated from 21% to a maximum of 31%. It was found that the lumen feed counter-current flow pattern was most advantageous and that concentration polarization has only a minimal influence on the overall process. The optimization of certain process parameters is carried out. The correct choice of feed parameters (pressure and velocity) is of importance when the process is being optimized. The influence of membrane thickness and membrane selectivity is discussed and optimal values for the fiber length are found. A third model was developed for describing mass transfer in non-porous gas-liquid membrane contactors. Membraaniprosesseista tarkastellaan kaasujen erotusta sekä kaasujen kulkeutumista kalvoilla erotettujen kaasu- ja nestefaasien välillä. Koelaitteiston avulla tutkittiin hapen rikastamista ilmasta. Selektiivisenä kuitumateriaalina Nagasep M60-AS -moduulissa toimii silikonikumi, jonka happimolekyylit läpäisevät nopeammin kuin typpimolekyylit. Permeaatin happipitoisuus on näin ollen korkeampi kuin paineistetun syöttöilman. Mittausten avulla tutkittiin prosessiparametrien ja virtauskytkennän vaikutusta erotusprosessiin. Mittausdatan avulla validoitiin matemaattisia malleja. Kaasujen erotusprosessin simulointia varten kehitettiin kaksi mallia, joista ensimmäinen perustuu aineensiirtovastuksiin kalvossa ja konsentraatiorajakerroksissa kalvon molemmilla puolilla. Konsentraatiopolarisaation vaikutusta arvioidaan korrelaatiokaavojen avulla. Toinen malli perustuu yleisiin liikemäärä- ja aineensiirtoyhtälöihin, jotka ratkaistaan numeerisesti elementtimenetelmän avulla. Simulointitulokset ja mittausdata ovat yhteneviä kohtuullisella tarkkuudella. Hapen mooliosuutta saatiin kokeellisesti nostettua kymmenen prosenttiyksikköä 31 prosenttiin. Havaittiin, että otollisimmassa konfiguraatiossa hapen rikastamiselle ilmasta syöttöilma virtaa kuitujen sisällä sekä vastavirtaperiaatteella permeaattivirtaan nähden ja että konsentraatiopolarisaation vaikutus jää pieneksi. Mallien avulla suoritettiin tiettyjen prosessiparametrien optimointia. Syöttöparametrien (paine ja nopeus) valinta on tärkeässä asemassa prosessia optimoitaessa. Lisäksi kalvon paksuuden ja selektiivisyyden sekä kuitujen pituuden vaikutusta selvitetään. Kolmannella mallilla tutkitaan aineensiirtoa ei-huokoisilla kalvoilla erotettujen kaasu- ja nestefaasien välillä. This study is a part of a research project developing heat storages for warming automobile combustion engines. Thermal storage is charged with engine waste heat, which is discharged in order to maintain proper engine temperature or used for preheating. The supercooling phenomenon intrigued us because of its ability to store the latent heat of phase change material (PCM) without any losses for long periods of time and release it when desired. In this work, heat recovery as supercooled liquid sodium acetate trihydrate (SAT) encounters rapid phase change in the various brush heat exchangers is studied. Laboratory experiments uncover the suitability of supercooled sodium acetate trihydrate as a latent heat storage medium by output capacities and repeatability of the freeze-thaw cycles. An effect that the degree of supercooling and coolant flow rate has on the heat recovery is also considered. Curved pipe heat transfer characteristics and optimal curvature for efficient heat transfer with adequate pressure losses was studied by minimizing the entropy generation rate in heat transfer pipe. Results revealed an exiguous relation between brush density and output capacities and heat recovery rate. For low power requirements, coarser brushes should be utilized, as the heat release rate is moderate. Crystallization experiments conducted in glass vessels compared to the ones performed in the brush heat exchangers showed a significant difference of the stability of the supercooled metastable state and the degree of supercooling. Thus, major work has to be pursued in developing stable and reliable supercooled phase change material, as spontaneous crystallization must be prevented.
