Le Fort I osteotomies have been used for more than five decades, but their impact on nasal and paranasal cavities physiology, has not been studied deeply. In this paper we want to analyse the possible correlation between post-orthognathic findings and prevalence of sinusitis which require surgical treatment. A retrospective cohort study was designed in 2017; the study was designed and carried out in the Verona University maxillo-facial department, a referral centre for orthognathic surgery. The study population is made of 64 patients that underwent orthognathic surgery (To treat class II or III malocclusion) between 2010 and 2015. Inclusion criteria were the availability of a Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) before surgery and one between 12 and 24 months after orthognathic surgery. Exclusion criteria were smoking habit and previous orthognathic procedures. During follow-up time prevalence of sinusitis was 18.5% and some patients required a secondary surgery to treat sinusitis. Surgery induced anatomic alterations were frequent in patients with sinusitis, sings and symptoms of sinusitis show positive correlation with anatomic alterations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: Background: The overall incidence of pathological septal deformity has been found to be significantly higher in unilateral cleft lip/palate (UCLP) children than in control children. Of the seven types of septal deformity according to Mladina''s classification, type 6 has been found to be the most frequent in UCLP children, occurring in only 3.7% of the control children. Objective: To investigate the incidence of type 6 septal deformity in the parents of UCLP children. Patients and methods: UCLP children (N =62) and their parents (N =91) were examined for type 6 septal deformities. Results: Type 6 was found in at least one parent of a UCLP child in 58% of cases. However, it was not found in the parents whose UCLP children did not show a type 6 septal deformity. Conclusion: Type 6 septal deformity is almost a rule in children suffering from UCLP. Type 6 was not seen in the parents whose UCLP children did not show a type 6 septal deformity. There is a morphogenetic predisposition for the development of CLP in children whose parents carry a type 6 septal deformity. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Patients with septal or rhinoseptal deformities are often evaluated for surgery in our service. This is a retrospective study of children operated for this reason between January 2004 and December 2006. There were 99 patients divided into two groups: septoplasty group and septorhinoplasty group which included 60 children in the first one and 39 in the second. The most frequent symptom was nasal obstruction in both groups. Allergic rhinitis was common among the septoplasty group (46.6%); a previous trauma was recorded in the septorhinoplasty group (51.28%). Treatment was successful except in four patients of the first group and in two of the second group. No complications occurred in any patient. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: There has been little research into inherited septal deformities. While, Pejic´ carried out a study some 50 years ago, and Grymer more recently suggested that some posterior septal deformities could be inherited, both studies lack a precise definition of the types of septal deformities which were investigated. The aim of this paper is to investigate the hypothetic influence of heredity on the onset of particular types of septal deformities. The authors investigated a very particular and well defined type of septal deformity: type 6 after Mladina’s classification. Methods: The authors studied a group of 22 children among 779 children aged 7–14, selected at random, suffering from type 6 septal deformity and their 44 parents. They were examined by means of anterior rhinoscopy by two the same ENT specialists in rhinology. The control group consisted of 24 children with a straight nasal septum of the same age and sex distribution and their 48 parents. The results were compared using Fisher’s exact probability test. Results: In the studied group type 6 septal deformity was found in 21 out of 22 both fathers and mothers of these children. Type 6 was not found in any of 48 parents of children with no septal deformity. Conclusions: There is a high positive correlation between the appearance of type 6 septal deformities in both mothers and fathers of children with this type of deformity. The high correlation in the incidence of type 6 nasal deformity in mothers and their children and in fathers and their children suggests that this type of nasal deformity is inherited. Most authors hold that only posterior septal deformities result from inheritance factors, while anterior deformities result from environmental factors, that is, from injury to the nose and the central massif of the face. Septal deviations are the most frequent cause of nasal obstruction, and represent a common complaint in rhinologic practice. Since the first description of Lanza et al. in 1991, the use of the endoscope for the correction of septal deformities is increasingly more frequent. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectivenes of the endoscopic septoplasty for the correction of each of the 7 types of septal deformities according to the Mladina's classification. A retrospective chart review was performed in 59 consecutive patients presenting to our Department for Endoscopic Septoplasty from February 2012 to August 2014. For each deviation, descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation, significant increase/decrease) was used to asses the corrective capacity and time-dependent effects at follow-up. This study shows that the corrective power of endoscopic septoplasty is different according to the type of deviation. To our knowledge this is the first study that evaluates the corrective capacity of this technique for each deviation by analysing pre- and postoperative objective outcomes as well as subjective outcomes gathered from the validated NOSE questionnaire. Even if endoscopic septoplasty may now be considered a reliable alternative to the classic technique, it is essential to identify the right deformity preoperatively in order to provide the correct therapeutic choice., (Copyright © 2018 Società Italiana di Otorinolaringologia e Chirurgia Cervico-Facciale, Rome, Italy.)
