The likelihood of magnetic nanoparticles to agglomerate is usually estimated through the ratio between magnetic dipole-dipole and thermal energies, thus neglecting the fact that, depending on the magnitude of the magnetic anisotropy constant ($K$), the particle moment may fluctuate internally and thus undermine the agglomeration process. Based on the comparison between the involved timescales, we study in this work how the threshold size for magnetic agglomeration ($d_{aggl}$) varies depending on the $K$ value. Our results suggest that small variations in $K$ -due to e.g. shape contribution-, might shift $d_{aggl}$ by a few nm. A comparison with the usual \textit{superparamagnetism} estimation is provided, as well as with the energy competition approach. In addition, based on the key role of the anisotropy in the hyperthermia performance, we also analyse the associated heating capability, as non-agglomerated particles would be of high interest for the application.

Magnetic particle hyperthermia, in which colloidal nanostructures are exposed to an alternating magnetic field, is a promising approach to cancer therapy. Unfortunately, the clinical efficacy of hyperthermia has not yet been optimized. Consequently, routes to improve magnetic particle hyperthermia such as designing hybrid structures comprised from different phase materials are actively pursued. Here we demonstrate enhanced hyperthermia efficiency in relative large spherical Fe/Fe-oxide core/shell nanoparticles through the manipulation of interactions between the core and shell phases. Experimental results on exemplary samples with diameters in the range 30-80 nm indicated a direct correlation of hysteresis losses to the observed temperature elevation rate with a maximum efficiency of around 0.9 kW/g. The absolute particle size, the core/shell ratio, and the interposition of a thin w\"ustite interlayer, are shown to have powerful effects on the specific absorption rate. By comparing our measurements to micromagnetic calculations we have unveiled topologically non-trivial magnetisation reversal modes under which interparticle interactions become negligible, aggregates formation is minimized, and the energy that is converted into heat is increased. This information has been overlooked till date and is in stark contrast to the existing knowledge on homogeneous particles.

Magnetic nanowires (NW) are promising candidates for heat generation under AC-field application due to their large shape anisotropy. They may be used for catalysis, hyperthermia or water purification treatments. In the present work we theoretically evaluate the heat dissipated by a single magnetic nanowire, originated from the domain wall dynamics under the action of an AC-field. We compare the Permalloy NWs (which demagnetize via the transverse wall propagation) with the Co fcc NWs whose reversal mode is via a vortex domain wall. The average hysteresis loop areas -which are proportional to the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR)- as a function of the field frequency have a pronounced maximum in the range 200MHz-1GHz. This maximum frequency is smaller in Permalloy than in Co and depends on the nanowire length. A simple model related to the nucleation and propagation time and domain wall velocity (higher for the vortex than for the transverse domain wall) is proposed to explain the non-monotonic SAR dependence on the frequency., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

Experiments on magnetic nanoparticles in a viscous medium have shown that agglomerates form that display complex shapes. However, most theoretical results predict more simple, ordered shapes, such as single-particle width chains. To account for this discrepancy we have created a theoretical model that phenomenologically includes the bridging or "stickiness" between ligands on nearby nanoparticles. This interaction is accounted for through a unitless stickiness parameter c that can be varied between 0 (no bridging between ligands) and 1 (irreversible bridging or sticking together on impact). An analytic estimate for the value of c is provided based on a comparison between the time for a particle to diffuse to an agglomerate compared to the time for it to reorient into the local magnetic field direction. Numerical Langevin simulations are performed using ferromagnetic, 50 nm and 25 nm diameter magnetite nanoparticles with various ligand coating lengths in hexane in order to support the analytic estimate. The detailed derivation of the quantum Landau-Lifshitz-Bloch (qLLB) equation for simple spin-flip scattering mechanisms based on spin-phonon and spin-electron interactions is presented and the approximations are discussed. The qLLB equation is written in the form, suitable for comparison with its classical counterpart. The temperature dependence of the macroscopic relaxation rates is discussed for both mechanisms. We use a Monte Carlo approach to simulate the influence of the dipolar interaction on assemblies of monodisperse superparamagnetic ${\gamma}-Fe_{2}O_{3}$ nanoparticles. We have identified a critical concentration c*, that marks the transition between two different regimes in the evolution of the blocking temperature ($T_{B}$) with interparticle interactions. At low concentrations (c < c*) magnetic particles behave as an ideal non-interacting system with a constant $T_{B}$. At concentrations c > c* the dipolar energy enhances the anisotropic energy barrier and $T_{B}$ increases with increasing c, so that a larger temperature is required to reach the superparamagnetic state. The fitting of our results with classical particle models and experiments supports the existence of two differentiated regimes.
