We show by direct numerical simulations that the turbulence generated by steadily heating a long cylinder immersed in helium~II is strongly inhomogeneous and consists of a dense turbulent layer of quantized vortices localized around the cylinder. We analyse the properties of this superfluid turbulence in terms of radial distribution of the vortex line density and the anisotropy and we compare these properties to the better known properties of homogeneous counterflow turbulence in channels., Comment: 7 pages, 10 figures; to be published in Phys Rev B

Experiments and numerical simulations of turbulent $^4$He and $^3$He-B have established that, at hydrodynamic length scales larger than the average distance between quantum vortices, the energy spectrum obeys the same 5/3 Kolmogorov law which is observed in the homogeneous isotropic turbulence of ordinary fluids. The importance of the 5/3 law is that it points to the existence of a Richardson energy cascade from large eddies to small eddies. However, there is also evidence of quantum turbulent regimes without Kolmogorov scaling. This raises the important questions of why, in such regimes, the Kolmogorov spectrum fails to form, what is the physical nature of turbulence without energy cascade, and whether hydrodynamical models can account for the unusual behaviour of turbulent superfluid helium. In this work we describe simple physical mechanisms which prevent the formation of Kolmogorov scaling in the thermal counterflow, and analyze the conditions necessary for emergence of quasiclassical regime in quantum turbulence generated by injection of vortex rings at low temperatures. We report computer simulations of the interaction of seeding particles with quantized vortices and with the normal fluid flow in thermal counterflow of superfluid $^4$He. We show that if the particle concentration is too large, the vortex tangle is significantly affected, posing problems in the interpretation of visualization experiments. The main effects are an increase in vortex line density and a change in polarization of the vortex tangle, caused by the action of the Stokes drag of the viscous normal fluid on the trapped particles. We argue that in the case of large particle concentration, typically used for the particle image velocimetry technique, the tangle properties might become significantly changed. On the contrary, the particle tracking velocimetry technique that uses smaller particle concentration should not be appreciably affected.

Superfluid $^3$He-B in the zero-temperature limit offers a unique means of studying quantum turbulence by the Andreev reflection of quasiparticle excitations by the vortex flow fields. We validate the experimental visualization of turbulence in $^3$He-B by showing the relation between the vortex-line density and the Andreev reflectance of the vortex tangle in the first simulations of the Andreev reflectance by a realistic 3D vortex tangle, and comparing the results with the first experimental measurements able to probe quantum turbulence on length scales smaller than the inter-vortex separation., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, and Supplemental Material (2 pages, 2 figures)

Quantum turbulence accompanying thermal counterflow in superfluid $^4$He was recently visualized by the Maryland group, using micron-sized tracer particles of solid hydrogen (J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. {\bf 77}, 111007 (2008)) . In order to understand the observations we formulate the coupled dynamics of fine particles and quantized vortices, in the presence of a relative motion of the normal and superfluid components. Numerical simulations based on this formulation are shown to agree reasonably well with experimental observations of the velocity distributions of the tracer particles in thermal counterflow.

Quantum turbulence can be generated in superfluid helium either thermally (by applying a heat flux, as in thermal counterflow) or mechanically (by stirring the liquid). By modelling the superfluid vortex lines as reconnecting space curves with fixed circulation, and the driving normal fluid as a uniform flow (for thermal counterflow) and a synthetic turbulent flow (for mechanically-driven turbulence), we determine the difference between thermally-driven and mechanically-driven quantum turbulence. We find that in mechanically-driven turbulence the energy is concentrated at the large scales, the spectrum obeys Kolmogorov scaling, vortex lines have large curvature, and the presence of coherent vortex structures induces vortex reconnections at small angles. On the contrary, in thermally-driven turbulence the energy is concentrated at the mesoscales, the curvature is smaller, the vorticity field is featureless and reconnections occur at larger angles. We studied numerically the Andreev scattering cross-sections of three-dimensional isolated quantized vortex rings in superfluid 3He-B at ultra-low temperatures. We calculated the dependence of the cross-section on the ring's size and on the angle between the beam of incident thermal quasiparticle excitations and the direction of the ring's motion. We also introduced, and investigated numerically, the cross-section averaged over all possible orientations of the vortex ring; such a cross-section may be particularly relevant for the analysis of experimental data. We also analyzed the role of screening effects for Andreev reflection of quasiparticles by systems of vortex rings. Using the results obtained for isolated rings we found that the screening factor for a system of unlinked rings depends strongly on the average radius of the vortex ring, and that the screening effects increase with decreasing the rings' size., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures ; submitted to Physical Review B

We compute the Andreev reflection coefficient of a flux of thermal quasiparticles in He3-B incident upon various two-dimensional vortex configurations. We find that, for the same number of positive and negative vortex points, the reflection coefficient is much reduced if the points are arranged in pairs (which corresponds to a gas of vortex rings in three-dimensions) rather than random (which corresponds to a vortex tangle in three-dimensions). This results is consistent with measurements performed by Bradley et al. at the University of Lancaster., Comment: submitted

Recent experiments on quantum turbulence in superfluid helium made use of small tracer particles to track the motion of quantized vortices, determine velocity statistics and visualize vortex reconnections. A problem with this visualization technique is that it may change the turbulent flow which it visualizes. To address this problem, we derive and solve the equations of motion of a quantized vortex ring which contains a given number of particles trapped on the vortex core, hence derive a quantitative criterion to determine in which measure small particles trapped in quantized vortices affect vortex motion. A recent Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) experiment in He II counterflow around a cylindrical obstacle showed the existence of apparently stationary normal fluid ddies both downstream (at the rear) and upstream (in front) of the cylinder. This rather surprising result does not have an analogue in experimental observations of classical fluid flows. We suggest that the explanation for the apparent stability of such eddies can be provided entirely from the viewpoint of classical fluid dynamics. We also discuss a possible connection between the emergence of the normal fluid eddies and the polarization of the vortex tangle in superfluid., Comment: submitted

The vortex line density of turbulent superfluid He3-B at very low temperature is deduced by detecting the shadow of ballistic quasiparticles which are Andreev reflected by quantized vortices. Until now the measured total shadow has been interpreted as the sum of shadows arising from interactions of a single quasiparticle with a single vortex. By integrating numerically the quasi-classical Hamiltonian equations of motion of ballistic quasiparticles in the presence of nontrivial but relatively simple vortex systems (such as vortex-vortex and vortex-antivortex pairs and small clusters of vortices) we show that partial screening can take place, and the total shadow is not necessarily the sum of the shadows. We have also found that it is possible that, upon impinging on complex vortex configurations, quasiparticles experience multiple reflections, which can be classical, Andreev, or both., Comment: To appear in Phys Rev B

Andreev scattering of thermal excitations is a powerful tool for studying quantized vortices and turbulence in superfluid He3-B at very low temperatures. We write Hamilton's equations for a quasiparticle in the presence of a vortex line, determine its trajectory, and find under wich conditions it is Andreev reflected. To make contact with experiments, we generalize our results to the Onsager vortex gas, and find values of the intervortex spacing in agreement with less rigorous estimates.
