In this paper, we present a molecular dynamics study of the structural and dynamical properties of γ-valerolactone (GVL) both as a standalone solvent and in electrolyte formulations for electrochemistry applications. This study involves developing a new parameterization of a polarizable forcefield and applying it to simulate pure GVL and selected salt solutions. The forcefield was validated with experimental bulk data and quantum mechanical calculations, with excellent agreement obtained in both cases. Specifically, two 1M electrolyte solutions of lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide and lithium bis(oxalate)borate in GVL were simulated, focusing on their ionic transport and highlighting ion solvation structure. Ion pairing in the electrolytes was also investigated through enhanced sampling molecular dynamics, obtaining a detailed picture of the ion dynamics in the GVL solution.

Material characterization and investigation are the basis for improving the performance of electrochemical devices. However, many compounds with electrochemical applications are sensitive to atmospheric gases and moisture; therefore, even their characterization should be performed in a controlled atmosphere. In some cases, it is impossible to execute such investigations in a glove box, and, therefore, in the present work, an air-tight 3D printed cell was developed that preserves samples in a controlled atmosphere while allowing spectroscopic measurements in reflectance geometry. Equipped with a cheap 1 mm thick CaF2 optical window or a more expensive 0.5 mm thick ZnS window, the cell was used for both optical photothermal infrared and Raman spectroscopy measures; imaging of the samples was also possible. The far-infrared range reflectance measurements were performed with a cell equipped with a diamond window.

In the present work, an insight on the morpho/structural properties of semitransparent organic devices for buildings’ integrated photovoltaics is presented, and issues related to interface and bulk stability are addressed. The organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells under investigation are characterized by a blend of PM6:Y6 as a photo-active layer, a ZnO ETL (electron transporting layer), a HTL (hole transporting layer) of HTL-X and a transparent electrode composed by Ag nanowires (AgNWs). The devices’ active nanomaterials, processed as thin films, and their mutual nanoscale interfaces are investigated by a combination of in situ Energy Dispersive X-ray Reflectometry (EDXR) and ex situ Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and micro-Raman spectroscopy. In order to discriminate among diverse concomitant aging pathways potentially occurring upon working conditions, the effects of different stress factors were investigated: light and temperature. Evidence is gained of an essential structural stability, although an increased roughness at the ZnO/PM6:Y6 interface is deduced by EDXR measurements. On the contrary, an overall stability of the system subjected to thermal stress in the dark was observed, which is a clear indication of the photo-induced origin of the observed degradation phenomenon. Micro-Raman spectroscopy brings light on the origin of such effect, evidencing a photo-oxidation process of the active material in the device, using hygroscopic organic HTL, during continuous illumination in ambient moisture conditions. The process may be also triggered by a photocatalytic role of the ZnO layer. Therefore, an alternative configuration is proposed, where the hygroscopic HTL-X is replaced by the inorganic compound MoOx. The results show that such alternative configuration is stable under light stress (solar simulator), suggesting that the use of Molybdenum Oxide, limiting the photo-oxidation of the bulk PM6:Y6 active material, can prevent the cell from degradation.

Vanadium can store large quantities of hydrogen (about 4 mass%). However, only half of it can be reversibly absorbed. To avoid this issue, various partial substitutions were previously proposed, such as Ni. In this work, we explore the synthesis of a V85Ni15 alloy by means of ball milling, a simpler and more scalable method compared to arc or induction melting usually applied for metal alloys. After ball milling the powders of the pure metals for 15 h in argon, SEM–EDX measurements confirmed the stoichiometry of the synthesized material, which has a typical particle dimension of the order of a few microns and is composed from the coalescence of nanometric primary particles. XRD indicated a BCC crystalline structure with a typical grain size of ≈3 nm. Hydrogen can be absorbed without activation procedures at high temperatures. Up to H/M ≈ 0.08, one can observe the occurrence of a solid solution of hydrogen in the alloy, while at a higher hydrogen content, the formation of a hydride is likely to occur. The maximum hydrogen content is H/M ≈ 0.4 at the maximum investigated pressure in this study of p ≈ 45 bar. Both the hydrogenation enthalpy and entropy decrease as the hydrogen content increases, and the shape of the sorption isotherms is different from that of V85Ni15 produced by induction melting, possibly because of the nanometric dimensions of the particles produced by ball milling.

Abstract The superoxide disproportionation reaction is a key step in the chemistry of aprotic metal oxygen batteries that controls the peroxide formation upon discharge and opens the way for singlet oxygen release. Here we clarify the energy landscape of the disproportionation of superoxide in aprotic media catalyzed by group 1A cations. Our analysis is based on ab initio multireference computational methods and unveils the competition between the expected reactive path leading to peroxide and an unexpected reaction channel that involves the reduction of the alkaline ion. Both channels lead to the release of triplet and singlet O2. The existence of this reduction channel not only facilitates singlet oxygen release but leads to a reactive neutral solvated species that can onset parasitic chemistries due to their well-known reducing properties. Overall, we show that the application of moderate overpotentials makes both these channels accessible in aprotic batteries.

This work aimed to develop an easy-to-use smartphone-based electrochemical biosensor to quickly assess a coffee blend’s total polyphenols (Phs) content at the industrial and individual levels. The device is based on a commercial carbon-based screen-printed electrode (SPE) modified with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and gold nanoparticles (GNPs). At the same time, the biological recognition element, Laccase from Trametes versicolor, TvLac, was immobilized on the sensor surface by using glutaraldehyde (GA) as a cross-linking agent. The platform was electrochemically characterized to ascertain the influence of the SPE surface modification on its performance. The working electrode (WE) surface morphology characterization was obtained by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) imaging. All the measurements were carried out with a micro-potentiostat, the Sensit Smart by PalmSens, connected to a smartphone. The developed biosensor provided a sensitivity of 0.12 μA/μM, a linear response ranging from 5 to 70 μM, and a lower detection limit (LOD) of 2.99 μM. Afterward, the biosensor was tested for quantifying the total Phs content in coffee blends, evaluating the influence of both the variety and the roasting degree. The smartphone-based electrochemical biosensor’s performance was validated through the Folin–Ciocâlteu standard method.

Abstract The adsorption of diclofenac on thermo-plasma expanded graphite (a commercial product) from water solutions was investigated. The adsorbent material was characterized by SEM, TEM, BET, Raman and X-ray diffraction analyses. Typical diffractogram and Raman spectrum of graphitic material, dimension of 24.02 nm as crystallite dimension and a surface area of 47 m2 g−1 were obtained. The effect of pH on the adsorption capacity was evaluated in the range 1–7 and the adsorption mechanism was described by kinetic and isothermal studies. Pseudo-second order and Dubinin–Radushkevich models agreed with theoretical values of adsorption capacity (i.e. 400 and 433 mg g−1, respectively) and resulted to be the best fit for kinetics and isothermal experimental data. The thermodynamics of the process was evaluated by plotting the adsorption capacity/concentration ratio at the equilibrium as a function of different values of the multiplicative inverse of temperature. Moreover, the adsorbent regeneration was also investigated, comparing two different remediation techniques. Solvent washing performed with NaOH 0.2 M and thermo-treatment carried out by heating in an oven at 105 °C for 2 h and then at 200 °C for 4 h. The thermo-treatment was the best technique to regenerate the adsorbent, ensuring same performance after 4 cycles of use and regeneration.

Ionic liquids are good candidates as the main component of safe electrolytes for high-energy lithium-ion batteries. The identification of a reliable algorithm to estimate the electrochemical stability of ionic liquids can greatly speed up the discovery of suitable anions able to sustain high potentials. In this work, we critically assess the linear dependence of the anodic limit from the HOMO level of 27 anions, whose performances have been experimentally investigated in the previous literature. A limited r Pearson’s value of ≈0.7 is found even with the most computationally demanding DFT functionals. A different model considering vertical transitions in a vacuum between the charged state and the neutral molecule is also exploited. In this case, the best-performing functional (M08-HX) provides a Mean Squared Error (MSE) of 1.61 V2 on the 27 anions here considered. The ions which give the largest deviations are those with a large value of the solvation energy, and therefore, an empirical model that linearly combines the anodic limit calculated by vertical transitions in a vacuum and in a medium with a weight dependent on the solvation energy is proposed for the first time. This empirical method can decrease the MSE to 1.29 V2 but still provides an r Pearson’s value of ≈0.72.

Two ethoxy containing ionic liquids (ILs) sharing the same anion, N-trimethyl-N (2-methoxyethyl)ammonium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (N111(2O1)-TFSI) and N,N-diethyl-N-methyl-N (2-methoxyethyl)ammonium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (N122(2O1)-TFSI), and their mixtures are studied by means of differential scanning calorimetry and infrared spectroscopy combined with DFT calculations. The two ILs, slightly differing only for the length of two short chains, diverge significantly in the thermal properties: N111(2O1)-TFSI undergoes to a crystallization upon cooling, whereas N122(2O1)-TFSI is likely to become a glass. Experimental results indicate that in N111(2O1)-TFSI the occurrence of hydrogen bonding is energetically favored, and become particularly evident in the solid phase. The comparison with computational results indicates that it could be ascribed to the CH bonds involving the C atoms directly linked to the central N atom. In N122(2O1)-TFSI, DFT calculations suggest that hydrogen bonding could take place; however, IR measurements suggest that hydrogen bonding is not energetically favored. Moreover, in N122(2O1)-TFSI there is a larger conformational disorder that prevents from the alignment of cation and anion that contributes to the detection of clear hydrogen bonding infrared active bands. The mixtures rich in N111(2O1)-TFSI crystallize at lower temperatures than the pure ionic liquid. Progressively, the energy gain due to the instauration of hydrogen bonding decreases as the concentration of N122(2O1)-TFSI increases.

The morphological changes of Si nanowires (Si NWs) cycled in 1:1 ethylene–carbonate (EC)/diethyl–carbonate (DEC) with or without different additives, fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) or vinylene carbonate (VC), as well as the composition of the deposited solid–electrolyte interphase layer, are investigated by a combination of experimental microscopic and spectroscopic techniques. Scanning electron microscopy and optical spectroscopy highlight that the NW morphology is better preserved in samples cycled in the presence of FEC and VC additives compared to the additive-free electrolyte. However, only the use of FEC is capable of slightly mitigating the amorphization of silicon upon cycling. The solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formed over the Si NWs cycled in the additive-free electrolyte is richer in organic and inorganic carbonates compared to the SEI grown in the presence of the VC and FEC additives. Furthermore, both additives are able to remarkably limit the degradation of the LiPF6 salt. Overall, the use of the FEC-additive in the carbonate-based electrolyte promotes both morphological and structural resilience of the Si NWs upon cycling thanks to the optimal composition of the SEI layer.

Lithium-rich layered oxides (LRLO) are a wide class of innovative active materials used in positive electrodes in lithium-ion (LIB) and lithium–metal secondary batteries (LMB). LRLOs are over-stoichiometric layered oxides rich in lithium and manganese with a general formula Li1+xTM1−xO2, where TM is a blend of transition metals comprising Mn (main constituent), Ni, Co, Fe and others. Due to their very variable composition and extended defectivity, their structural identity is still debated among researchers, being likely an unresolved hybrid between a monoclinic (mC24) and a hexagonal lattice (hR12). Once casted in composite positive electrode films and assembled in LIBs or LMBs, LRLOs can deliver reversible specific capacities above 220–240 mAhg−1, and thus they exceed any other available intercalation cathode material for LIBs, with mean working potential above 3.3–3.4 V vs Li for hundreds of cycles in liquid aprotic commercial electrodes. In this review, we critically outline the recent advancements in the fundamental understanding of the physical–chemical properties of LRLO as well as the most exciting innovations in their battery performance. We focus in particular on the elusive structural identity of these phases, on the complexity of the reaction mechanism in batteries, as well as on practical strategies to minimize or remove cobalt from the lattice while preserving its outstanding performance upon cycling.

Microbatteries produced by physical deposition methods are expected to play a pivotal role in many different micro-electronic applications such as stand-alone sensors, implantable or wearable medical devices, radio frequency identification-based systems and smart-cards. In this study pulsed laser deposition (PLD) using a femtosecond-pulsed laser has been applied to TiO2 target materials to produce thin films of anatase-based nanoparticles on aluminum substrates suitable for application as negative electrode in Li-ion MBs. Different post-deposition treatments have been evaluated: films morphology and composition have been investigated with a multi-technique approach and the corresponding performance and electrochemical properties in Li-ion MBs have been analyzed by cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic techniques. Compact and dense TiO2 films composed by nanoparticles were obtained by PLD with co-crystallization of both anatase and rutile phases. Post-deposition annealing at temperature of 500 °C promote the rutile to anatase phase transition. As deposited TiO2 films are electrochemically almost inactive in lithium half cells, whereas post deposition annealing (either in Ar or Air) boosts the electrochemical activity: air annealing outperforms Ar annealing. The additional deposition of a outer carbon layer by PLD on the TiO2 films further improves the Li+ transport properties, the reversibility of the electrochemical intercalation/de-intercalation reaction as well as the battery performance in terms of capacity retention upon cycling and rate response.

Lithium titanium oxide (Li4Ti5O12, LTO) is an attractive negative electrode for the development of safe—next-generation—lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). LTO can find specific applications complementary to existing alternatives for LIBs thanks to its good rate capability at high C-rates, fast lithium intercalation, and high cycling stability. Furthermore, LIBs featuring LTO electrodes are inherently safer owing to the LTO’s operating potential of 1.55 V vs. Li+/Li where the commonly used organic-based electrolytes are thermodynamically stable. Herein, we report the combined use of water-soluble sodium alginate (SA) binder and lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI)-tetraglyme (1m-T) electrolyte and we demonstrate the improvement of the electrochemical performance of LTO-based electrodes with respect to those operating in conventional electrolyte 1M LiPF6-ethylene carbonate: dimethyl carbonate (LP30). We also tackle the analysis of the impact of combining the binder/electrolyte on the long-term cycling performance of LTO electrodes featuring SA or conventional polyvinylidene fluoride (PVdF) as binders. Therefore, to assess the impact of the combination of binder/electrolyte on performance, we performed post-mortem characterization by ex situ synchrotron diffraction experiments of LTO electrodes after cycling in LP30 and 1m-T electrolytes.

In this manuscript, we report an extensive study of the physico-chemical properties of different samples of O3-NaMnO2, synthesized by sol–gel and solid state methods. In order to successfully synthesize the materials by sol–gel methods a rigorous control of the synthesis condition has been optimized. The electrochemical performances of the materials as positive electrodes in aprotic sodium-ion batteries have been demonstrated. The effects of different synthesis methods on both structural and electrochemical features of O3-NaMnO2 have been studied to shed light on the interplay between structure and performance. Noticeably, we obtained a material capable of attaining a reversible capacity exceeding 180 mAhg−1 at 10 mAg−1 with a capacity retention >70% after 20 cycles. The capacity fading mechanism and the structural evolution of O3-NaMnO2 upon cycling have been extensively studied by performing post-mortem analysis using XRD and Raman spectroscopy. Apparently, the loss of reversible capacity upon cycling originates from irreversible structural degradations.

Li-rich layered oxide (LRLO) materials are promising positive-electrode materials for Li-ion batteries. Antisite defects, especially nickel and lithium ions, occur spontaneously in many LRLOs, but their impact on the functional properties in batteries is controversial. Here, we illustrate the analysis of the formation of Li/Ni antisite defects in the layered lattice of the Co-free LRLO Li1.2Mn0.6Ni0.2O2 compound through a combination of density functional theory calculations performed on fully disordered supercells and a thermodynamic model. Our goal was to evaluate the concentration of antisite defects in the trigonal lattice as a function of temperature and shed light on the native disorder in LRLO and how synthesis protocols can promote the antisite defect formation.

Sodium-conducting electrolytes, based on the EMIFSI, EMITFSI, N1114FSI, N1114TFSI, N1114IM14, PIP13TFSI and PIP14TFSI ionic liquids, were investigated in terms of electrochemical stability through voltammetry techniques with the aim of evaluating their feasibility in Na-ion devices. Both the anodic and cathodic sides were studied. The effect of contaminants, such as water and/or molecular oxygen, on the electrochemical robustness of the electrolytes was also investigated. Preliminary cyclic voltammetry and charge-discharge tests were carried out in Na/hard carbon and Na/α-NaMnO2 half cells using selected ionic liquid electrolytes. The results are presented and discussed in the present paper.

The replacement of cobalt in the lattice of lithium-rich layered oxides (LRLO) is mandatory to improve their environmental benignity and reduce costs. In this study, we analyze the impact of the cobalt removal from the trigonal LRLO lattice on the structural, thermodynamic, and electronic properties of this material through density functional theory calculations. To mimic disorder in the transition metal layers, we exploited the special quasi-random structure approach on selected supercells. The cobalt removal was modeled by the simultaneous substitution with Mn/Ni, thus leading to a p-doping in the lattice. Our results show that cobalt removal induces (a) larger cell volumes, originating from expanded distances among stacked planes; (b) a parallel increase of the layer buckling; (c) an increase of the electronic disorder and of the concentration of Jahn–Teller defects; and (d) an increase of the thermodynamic stability of the phase. Overall p-doping appears as a balanced strategy to remove cobalt from LRLO without massively deteriorating the structural integrity and the electronic properties of LRLO.

Pyrolyzed carbons from bio-waste sources are renewable nanomaterials for sustainable negative electrodes in Li- and Na-ion batteries. Here, carbon derived from a hazelnut shell has been obtained by hydrothermal processing of the bio-waste followed by thermal treatments and laser irradiation in liquid. A non-focused nanosecond pulsed laser source has been used to irradiate pyrolyzed carbon particles suspended in acetonitrile to modify the surface and morphology. Morphological, structural, and compositional changes have been investigated by microscopy, spectroscopy, and diffraction to compare the materials properties after thermal treatments as well as before and after the irradiation. Laser irradiation in acetonitrile induces remarkable alteration in the nanomorphology, increase in the surface area and nitrogen enrichment of the carbon surfaces. These materials alterations are beneficial for the electrochemical performance in lithium half cells as proved by galvanostatic cycling at room temperature.

In this manuscript, we report a detailed physico-chemical comparison between the α- and β-polymorphs of the NaMnO2 compound, a promising material for application in positive electrodes for secondary aprotic sodium batteries. In particular, the structure and vibrational properties, as well as electrochemical performance in sodium batteries, are compared to highlight differences and similarities. We exploit both laboratory techniques (Raman spectroscopy, electrochemical methods) and synchrotron radiation experiments (Fast-Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction). Notably the vibrational spectra of these phases are here reported for the first time in the literature as well as the detailed structural analysis from diffraction data. DFT+U calculations predict both phases to have similar electronic features, with structural parameters consistent with the experimental counterparts. The experimental evidence of antisite defects in the beta-phase between sodium and manganese ions is noticeable. Both polymorphs have been also tested in aprotic batteries by comparing the impact of different liquid electrolytes on the ability to de-intercalated/intercalate sodium ions. Overall, the monoclinic α-NaMnO2 shows larger reversible capacity exceeding 175 mAhg−1 at 10 mAg−1.

Pyrrolidinium-based (Pyr) ionic liquids are a very wide family of molecular species. Pyrrolidinium cations are electrochemically stable in a large potential interval and their molecular size hinders their transport properties. The corresponding ionic liquids with trifluoromethyl sulphonyl imide anions are excellent solvents for lithium/sodium salts and have been demonstrated as electrolytes in aprotic batteries with enhanced safety standards. In this study, the analysis of the physicochemical properties of a homologous series of pyrrolidinium-based ionic liquids with general formula Pyr1,xTFSI (x = 1–8) have been tackled by first principles calculations based on the density functional theory. The molecular structures of isolated ions and ion pairs have been predicted by electronic structure calculations at B3LYP level of theory in vacuum or in simulated solvents. Thermodynamic properties have been calculated to evaluate the ion pairs dissociation and oxidation/reduction stability. This is the first systematic computational analysis of this series of molecules with a specific focus on the impact of the length of the alkyl chain on the pyrrolidinium cation on the overall physicochemical properties of the ion pairs.

Transition-metal (TM) layered oxides have been attracting enormous interests in recent decades because of their excellent functional properties as positive electrode materials in lithium-ion batteries. In particular LiCoO2 (LCO), LiNiO2 (LNO) and LiMnO2 (LMO) are the structural prototypes of a large family of complex compounds with similar layered structures incorporating mixtures of transition metals. Here, we present a comparative study on the phase stability of LCO, LMO and LNO by means of first-principles calculations, considering three different lattices for all oxides, i.e., rhombohedral (hR12), monoclinic (mC8) and orthorhombic (oP8). We provide a detailed analysis—at the same level of theory—on geometry, electronic and magnetic structures for all the three systems in their competitive structural arrangements. In particular, we report the thermodynamics of formation for all ground state and metastable phases of the three compounds for the first time. The final Gibbs Energy of Formation values at 298 K from elements are: LCO(hR12) −672 ± 8 kJ mol−1; LCO(mC8) −655 ± 8 kJ mol−1; LCO(oP8) −607 ± 8 kJ mol−1; LNO(hR12) −548 ± 8 kJ mol−1; LNO(mC8) −557 ± 8 kJ mol−1; LNO(oP8) −548 ± 8 kJ mol−1; LMO(hR12) −765 ± 10 kJ mol−1; LMO(mC8) −779 ± 10 kJ mol−1; LMO(oP8) −780 ± 10 kJ mol−1. These values are of fundamental importance for the implementation of reliable multi-phase thermodynamic modelling of complex multi-TM layered oxide systems and for the understanding of thermodynamically driven structural phase degradations in real applications such as lithium-ion batteries.

Olivine-type lithium metal phosphates (LiMPO4) are promising cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries. LiFePO4 (LFP) is commonly used in commercial Li-ion cells but the Fe3+/Fe2+ couple can be usefully substituted with Mn3+/Mn2+, Co3+/Co2+, or Ni3+/Ni2+, in order to obtain higher redox potentials. In this communication we report a systematic analysis of the synthesis condition of LiCoPO4 (LCP) using a solvo-thermal route at low temperature, the latter being a valuable candidate to overcome the theoretical performances of LFP. In fact, LCP shows higher working potential (4.8 V vs. 3.6 V) compared to LFP and similar theoretical capacity (167 mAh·g−1). Our goal is to show the effect of the synthesis condition of the ability of LCP to reversibly cycle lithium in electrochemical cells. LCP samples have been prepared through a solvo-thermal method in aqueous-non aqueous solvent blends. Different Co2+ salts have been used to study the effect of the anion on the crystal growth as well as the effect of solution acidity, temperature and reaction time. Materials properties have been characterized by Fast-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopies. The correlation between structure/morphology and electrochemical performances has been investigated by galvanostatic charge-discharge cycles.

Amorphous (Ni0.6Nb0.4)1−xZrx membranes were investigated by means of X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetry, differential thermal analysis and tensile modulus measurements. Crystallization occurs only above 673 K, and even after hydrogenation the membranes retain their mainly amorphous nature. However, after exposure to gaseous hydrogen, the temperature dependence of the tensile modulus, M, displays large variations. The modulus of the hydrogen reacted membrane is higher with respect to the pristine samples in the temperature range between 298 K and 423 K. Moreover, a sharp drop in M is observed upon heating to approximately 473 K, well below the glass transition temperature of these glasses. We propose that the changes in the moduli as a function of temperature on the hydrogenated samples are due to the formation of nanocrystalline phases of Zr hydrides in (Ni0.6Nb0.4)1−xZrx-H membanes.

Transition metal substitution is a key strategy to optimize the functional properties of advanced crystalline materials used as positive electrodes in secondary lithium batteries (LIBs). Here we investigate the structural alterations in the olivine lattice of Mn and Ni substituted LiCoPO4 phase and the impact on performance in LIBs. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and extended X-ray absorption experiments have been carried out in order to highlight the structural alterations induced by partial substitution of cobalt by manganese and nickel. XRD analysis suggests that substitution induces an expansion of the lattices and an increase of the antisite disorder between lithium and transition metal ions in the structure. XAS data highlight negligible electronic disorder but a relevant modulation in the local coordination around the different metal ions. Moreover, galvanostatic tests showed poor reversibility of the redox reaction compared to the pure LCP sample, and this failure is discussed in detail in view of the observed remarkable structural changes.

In the research of new nanocomposite proton-conducting membranes, SnO2 ceramic powders with surface functionalization have been synthesized and adopted as additives in Nafion-based polymer systems. Different synthetic routes have been explored to obtain suitable, nanometer-sized sulphated tin oxide particles. Structural and morphological characteristics, as well as surface and bulk properties of the obtained oxide powders, have been determined by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopies, N2 adsorption, and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). In addition, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), atomic force microscopy (AFM), thermal investigations, water uptake (WU) measurements, and ionic exchange capacity (IEC) tests have been used as characterization tools for the nanocomposite membranes. The nature of the tin oxide precursor, as well as the synthesis procedure, were found to play an important role in determining the morphology and the particle size distribution of the ceramic powder, this affecting the effective functionalization of the oxides. The incorporation of such particles, having sulphate groups on their surface, altered some peculiar properties of the resulting composite membrane, such as water content, thermo-mechanical, and morphological characteristics.

Nanocrystalline samples of Mg-Fe-H were synthesized by mixing of MgH2 and Fe in a 2:1 molar ratio by hand grinding (MIX) or by reactive ball milling (RBM) in a high-pressure vial. Hydrogenation procedures were performed at various temperatures in order to promote the full conversion to Mg2FeH6. Pure Mg2FeH6 was obtained only for the RBM material cycled at 485 °C. This extremely pure Mg2FeH6 sample was investigated as an anode for lithium batteries. The reversible electrochemical lithium incorporation and de-incorporation reactions were analyzed in view of thermodynamic evaluations, potentiodynamic cycling with galvanostatic acceleration (PCGA), and ex situ X-ray Diffraction (XRD) tests. The Mg2FeH6 phase underwent a conversion reaction; the Mg metal produced in this reaction was alloyed upon further reduction. The back conversion reaction in a lithium cell was here demonstrated for the first time in a stoichiometric extremely pure Mg2FeH6 phase: the reversibility of the overall conversion process was only partial with an overall coulombic yield of 17% under quasi-thermodynamic control. Ex situ XRD analysis highlighted that the material after a full discharge/charge in a lithium cell was strongly amorphized. Under galvanostatic cycling at C/20, C/5 and 1 C, the Mg2FeH6 electrodes were able to supply a reversible capacity with increasing coulombic efficiency and decreasing specific capacity as the current rate increased.

Automotive and stationary energy storage are among the most recently-proposed and still unfulfilled applications for lithium ion devices. Higher energy, power and superior safety standards, well beyond the present state of the art, are actually required to extend the Li-ion battery market to these challenging fields, but such a goal can only be achieved by the development of new materials with improved performances. Focusing on the negative electrode materials, alloying and conversion chemistries have been widely explored in the last decade to circumvent the main weakness of the intercalation processes: the limitation in capacity to one or at most two lithium atoms per host formula unit. Among all of the many proposed conversion chemistries, hydrides have been proposed and investigated since 2008. In lithium cells, these materials undergo a conversion reaction that gives metallic nanoparticles surrounded by an amorphous matrix of LiH. Among all of the reported conversion materials, hydrides have outstanding theoretical properties and have been only marginally explored, thus making this class of materials an interesting playground for both fundamental and applied research. In this review, we illustrate the most relevant results achieved in the frame of the Italian National Research Project FIRB 2010 Futuro in Ricerca “Hydrides as high capacity anodes in lithium cells” and possible future perspectives of research for this class of materials in electrochemical energy storage devices.

In this communication we present a detailed study of Nafion™ composite membranes containing different amounts of nanosized sulfated titania particles, synthesized through an optimized one-step synthesis procedure. Functional membrane properties, such as ionic exchange capacity and water uptake (WU) ability will be described and discussed, together with thermal analysis, atomic force microscopy and Raman spectroscopy data. Also electrochemical properties such as proton conductivity and performances in hydrogen fuel cells will be presented. It has been demonstrated that a critical concentration of filler particles can boost the fuel cell performance at low humidification, exhibiting a significant improvement of the maximum power and current density delivered under 30% low-relative humidity (RH) and 70 °C with respect to bare Nafion™-based systems.
