- Abstract
We apply operad theory to enumerative combinatorics in order to count the number of shuffles between series–parallel posets and chains. We work with three types of shuffles, two of them noncommutative; for example, a left deck-divider shuffle A between P and Q is a shuffle of the posets in which, on every maximal chain m ⊂ A , the minimum and maximum elements belong to P and no two consecutive points of Q appear consecutively on m. The number of left deck-divider shuffles of P and Q differ from the number of left deck-divider shuffles of Q and P. The generating functions whose n coefficient counts shuffles between a poset P and 1 < 2 < ⋯ < n are called shuffle series. We explain how shuffle series are isomorphic to order series as algebras over the operad of series parallel posets. The weak and strict order polynomials are well known in the literature. At the level of generating series, with the theory of sets with a negative number of elements, we introduce a third-order series and prove a theorem in the style of Stanley’s Reciprocity Theorem compatible with the structure of algebras over the operad of finite posets. We conclude by describing the relationship of our work with the combinatorial properties of the operadic tensor product of free trees operads. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study sets out to understand how journalism is represented in the Danish fiction series Borgen and the Spanish series El Caso: Crónica de Sucesos. The aim is to provide an understanding of how journalism is conceptualized in non-American fiction. Through textual analysis, we found out that Borgen (years 2010 and up) represents a generational and evolutionary conflict in which journalistic values are restrained by political and commercial imperatives reflecting challenges in Danish journalism. As such, this series criticizes the free press myth—commonly found in American fiction series. El Caso (1960s) also engages with this myth through the representation of journalism practices embedded in Spain's Francoist regime that balance public and political-religious interests. However, El Caso smooths over this conflict to illustrate how journalists cleverly overcame the censorship of the Catholic church. Both series explore the gendered and cultural obstacles of their respective contexts and eras. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article examines the state of the art in narrative genre and format concepts, demonstrating the laxity of the former and justifying the analytical practicality of the latter. It proposes a 12-parameter tool for taxonomising serialised audiovisual fiction formats. The application of this tool to case studies that will also examine plot structures will help to identify the determinants (possibilities and limitations) that certain production variables, initially considered merely technical or formal, impose on content development. These include the narratives and the poetic possible worlds in which they unfold. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An algorithm is presented that, taking independent Bernoulli random variables with parameter 1 / 2 as inputs and using only rational arithmetic, simulates a Bernoulli random variable with possibly irrational parameter τ. It requires a series representation of τ with positive, rational terms, and a rational bound on its truncation error that converges to 0. The number of required inputs has an exponentially bounded tail, and its mean is at most 3. The number of arithmetic operations has a tail that can be bounded in terms of the sequence of truncation error bounds. The algorithm is applied to two specific values of τ , including Euler's constant, for which obtaining a simple simulation algorithm was an open problem. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This essay will explore the ways in which the western has found new life in new television, especially in the recent neo-western Yellowstone. The paper pursues the significance of the western for both the medium of new television and for the construction of American identity and history. I argue ultimately that while the western has been central to the construction of American identity from its earliest days, recent developments in American identity suggest new qualitative developments for the western as it melds with new television.

FAMILY structure , *YOUNG adults , *MASS media influence , *MEDIA consumption , *HIGH school students , *UNMARRIED couples - Abstract
Turkey is the third largest exporter of television series globally, following the United States and the United Kingdom. Turkish TV series are widely popular both domestically and internationally. This is an important indicator of Turkey's cultural influence and soft power. However, the portrayal of Turkish culture and lifestyle in Turkish TV series requires closer academic scrutiny. This study analyses the portrayal of the family in popular Turkish TV series and its potential impact on high school students. It identifies the factors that challenge and transform the family institution, such as divorce, unmarried unions, free relationships, and the transformation of privacy. Additionally, it evaluates the reflections of these factors on the social structure. The content of television and digital platform series has become a significant factor influencing societal perspectives on family structure. The portrayal of lifestyles and family relationships depicted in the series influence how young viewers perceive their family dynamics and values. This study used a survey and thematic content analysis methodology to examine the influence of media, particularly series, on society and the media consumption habits of high school students. These analyses aimed to determine which television series students consume, how the themes that form the basis of this research are represented in these series, and the potential impact of these themes on everyday life. The research sample was drawn from a quantitative survey of high school students attending five different types of high schools, representing various age groups and socio-economic backgrounds. The most popular TV series among high school students in Turkey were identified as ‘Kurtlar Vadisi’, ‘Yasak Elma’, ‘Sadakatsiz’ and ‘Aşk 101’. The family images presented by these series were then examined from a critical perspective. In the qualitative section of the study, the portrayal of family in the series, its impact on young people's perception of family, and the concept of privacy were examined within the context of Cultivation Theory and Agenda-Setting Theory. The data obtained indicate that television series are the most popular form of mass media. The time slots during which series are broadcast are also the most-watched periods of television programming. The nine most popular digital platforms have a global subscriber base exceeding one billion. The findings illustrate that popular TV series have the capacity to alter perceptions of traditional family values and structure, as well as exert influence over the social agendas of young viewers. In particular, the themes of betrayal and the complexity of relationships in the series Yasak Elma, Sadakatsiz, and Aşk 101 have the potential to significantly impact the perspectives of young people on family life. In this context, the findings of the study demonstrate how media content is internalized by young people and how it influences their perceptions of family relationships. In particular, the portrayal of issues such as divorce and free relationships in television series has the potential to significantly influence the perspectives of young viewers on these matters. This may prompt young people to reassess their attitudes towards family values and relationships. The analytical generalizations derived from the research data indicate several significant findings. First and foremost, the advent of phenomena such as divorce, cohabitation (unmarried unions), hook-up culture, and the transformation of privacy threaten to erode the very fabric of the family institution, thereby introducing a host of risks to the institution itself. The mass media, particularly television series, represent the most consumed form of content and exert a profound influence on society, affecting it in a multitude of ways and across a range of dimensions. Television series represent a substantial proportion of the media consumption habits of high school students, with an average duration of 2 hours and 38 minutes on weekdays and 3 hours and 12 minutes on weekends. The most popular television series among high school students are Yasak Elma, Sadakatsiz, and Aşk 101. The content of these series may potentially pose a risk to the family institution, as outlined in the Sowing Theory, and influence the agenda of high school students regarding these issues, as outlined in the Agenda Setting Theory. The objective of the research is to guide educators, family counselors, and policymakers in the development of strategies to facilitate young people's engagement with the media in a constructive and informed manner. Educators can facilitate students' comprehension of the content of the TV series they consume and facilitate discussion of the potential effects of this content, thereby contributing to the development of a conscious media consumption practice. It is recommended that family counselors seek to mitigate the negative effects of media consumption by strengthening communication and relationships within the family unit. It is incumbent upon politicians to ensure that young people have a healthy and balanced media consumption practice. This may be achieved by reviewing media policies and regulations. - Abstract
Series constitute a significant portion of content consumed extensively on both television and digital platforms. Categorized into various genres such as drama, science-fiction, comedy, and crime, series cater to audiences with diverse socio-demographic and psychographic characteristics. The fundamental motivations for watching series include spending leisure time, entertainment, escapism, socialization, and knowledge acquisition. Series are among the most watched programs on television or digital platforms. In recent years, the proliferation of digital platforms in addition to television channels has made it possible for viewers to watch multiple episodes or a season of a series at the same time, while enabling viewers to access the series on various screens at any time and anywhere. The diversification of content to appeal to viewers with different interests and demographic characteristics, the possibility of global access to series on digital platforms, technological advances and the Covid-19 pandemic can be counted among the factors contributing to the increasing popularity of series. Happiness, on the other hand, denotes an individual's state of well-being, influenced by various personal, environmental, and cultural factors. When the literature on the relationship between happiness and series watching is examined, it is possible to infer that the studies mostly focus on the relationship between television viewing and happiness. However, there are various studies structured on the basis of happiness and watching series, albeit limited. Parasocial Interaction, Uses and Gratifications and Cultivation Theory come to the fore when the relationship between series and happiness is evaluated. Within the framework of the Uses and Gratifications approach, viewers watch series for various motivations. These motivations can be in the form of entertainment, spending time, and information. On the other hand, within the scope of the Parasocial Interaction Theory, viewers can identify with any series character. Considering that series are an intense genre on television within the framework of the Cultivation Theory, it can be said that watching too many series can affect the viewers' perception of reality. When the literature on watching series is examined, it is observed that watching series is evaluated within the framework of various communication theories and that studies on binge watching are conducted. However, it has been determined that the studies focusing on the relationship between watching series and happiness are limited. Therefore, the study focuses on the relationship between watching series and happiness. This study aims to analyse the relationship between watching series and happiness. The pilot application of the research was carried out with 30 participants reached online. After the pilot application, the items in the scales were finalised. In the research, the participants were reached through convenience sampling technique. Data obtained from 360 participants were analyzed through various statistical techniques. Through a survey, it was determined that the dimensions of "enrichment" and "emotional empowerment" had the highest average among the reasons for watching series, while "socialization" had the lowest average. Significant differences were found between the reasons for watching series and age and education, as well as between the number of series watched and educational status. It was determined that there was no significant relationship between reasons for watching series and happiness. On the other hand, it was observed that there was a significant relationship between "enrichment" and "coping/escape" which are among the dimensions of reasons for watching series, and happiness. However, it was concluded that this relationship was at a low level. The most striking finding within the scope of the research is that there is a significant relationship between the dimensions of "enrichment" and "coping/escape" and happiness, albeit at a low level. The aforementioned finding can be interpreted as that watching series reinforces "learning new knowledge" and "coping / escape". However, it would not be wrong to state that individual well-being or happiness also includes the ability to cope with possible problems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This qualitative research uses a case study to observe non-binary representation in TV fiction. The Dan character from the Spanish series HIT (RTVE, 2020–present), who is the first openly non-binary character in Spanish TV fiction, is analyzed through the lens of Queer Media Studies. The research applies a combination of content and discourse analysis. Qualitative content categories include a character's visibility, identity, relevance, embodiment, and social interaction. Discourse analysis categories include character's construction, lexicalization, propositional framing, and focus. Results show that Dan's non-binary depiction revolves around three significant axes: dualism, confusion, and exceptional talent. These axes frame social attitudes toward non-binary people and are composed by a set of features identified in Dan's case which also informs society's mind-sets. These traits are proposed as an analytical-theoretical tool for further analyses of non-binary representation in different cultural contexts. The outcomes of this research may inform audiovisual industries, regulations and academia, and are useful to consolidate non-binary media studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a common problem of diabetes, and it is the cause of blindness worldwide. Detection of diabetic radiology disease in the early detection stage is crucial for preventing vision loss. In this work, a deep learning-based binary classification of DR images has been proposed to classify DR images into healthy and unhealthy. Transfer learning-based 20 pre-trained networks have been fine-tuned using a robust dataset of diabetic radiology images. The combined dataset has been collected from three robust databases of diabetic patients annotated by experienced ophthalmologists indicating healthy or non-healthy diabetic retina images. Method: This work has improved robust models by pre-processing the DR images by applying a denoising algorithm, normalization, and data augmentation. In this work, three rubout datasets of diabetic retinopathy images have been selected, named DRD- EyePACS, IDRiD, and APTOS-2019, for the extensive experiments, and a combined diabetic retinopathy image dataset has been generated for the exhaustive experiments. The datasets have been divided into training, testing, and validation sets, and the models use classification accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, precision, F1-score, and ROC-AUC to assess the model's efficiency for evaluating network performance. The present work has selected 20 different pre-trained networks based on three categories: Series, DAG, and lightweight. Results: This study uses pre-processed data augmentation and normalization of data to solve overfitting problems. From the exhaustive experiments, the three best pre-trained have been selected based on the best classification accuracy from each category. It is concluded that the trained model ResNet101 based on the DAG category effectively identifies diabetic retinopathy disease accurately from radiological images from all cases. It is noted that 97.33% accuracy has been achieved using ResNet101 in the category of DAG network. Conclusion: Based on the experiment results, the proposed model ResNet101 helps healthcare professionals detect retina diseases early and provides practical solutions to diabetes patients. It also gives patients and experts a second opinion for early detection of diabetic retinopathy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine translation (MT) have revolutionized translation. However, assessing AI and MT of audiovisual (AV) content has not yet gained much interest. This study examines the strategies used to translate legal expressions by Netflix, Google Translate (GT), ChatGPT (GPT), and Gemini (GEM) in four English Netflix series. It also classifies the collected legal terms thematically. The results showed that the majority of English legal terms are related to criminal law. Using an eclectic approach of translation strategies, the findings showed that each translator (Human, MT, and AI) employs unique strategies, with paraphrasing being the most commonly used strategy (33.1%), followed by literal (26%) and cultural substitution (25.3%). The analysis also showed some cases of mistranslation, with Netflix showing the least and GT demonstrating the most errors. The results showed that AI and MT systems need further improvement in specialized fields such as legal. The study concludes that human translators follow subtitling requirements more precisely than machine translation and artificial intelligence systems do when it comes to legal terminology. This work establishes the relationship between climate, bioclimate, and forest ecosystems and highlights the need to teach these topics in educational institutions. It was found that such knowledge is not currently taught in universities, leading to scarce or non-existent teacher training in these areas. However, the teaching of bioclimatic aspects over a three-year period as a basis for land use planning, has shown highly positive results. The objective is to propose the teaching of bioclimatology to future managers and teachers in order to obtain a balanced environmental development. The analysis of bioclimatic diagrams makes it possible to stipulate the duration of the water reserve in the soil. This is essential for agricultural and forestry management. The edaphic factor and the bioclimatic ombrotclimatic (Io) and thermoclimatic (It/Itc) indexes condition the types of forests and crops that can exist in a territory, with the particularity that the ombrotype is conditioned by the edaphic factor, which allows a decrease in the ombrothermal index, expressed by the ombroedaphoboxerophilic index (Ioex). The humid ombrotypes condition the presence of Abies pinsapo, Quercus pyrenaica, Q. broteroi, and Q. suber, and the dry ones Q. rotundifolia and Olea sylvestris. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of the study was to examine how students generate problems about the concept of series, and how they evaluate and solve these problems. The difficulties experienced by the students while posing problems and their perceptions of the posing-evaluating-solving approach were also explored. In the first stage, 46 second-year university students posed problems for four tasks. In the second stage, which occurred a week after the first stage, the students evaluated their self-generated problems in terms of appropriateness to the tasks. The students who thought that they did not pose problems suitable for the tasks revised or reposed the problems, and then solved them by specifying the convergence or divergence of the series in the problems. The students also considered the impact of problem-posing implementation on their knowledge of the series. Findings showed that students' difficulties led to unsuitable and unsolvable problems. The most prominent difficulties were using sequences instead of series and using convergent series instead of divergent series or vice versa. Moreover, providing the students with opportunities to evaluate and solve their self-generated problems at the end of the second stage was effective for the increase in the number of suitable and solvable problems. This article focuses on the role of female showrunners in Spain, from 2019 to the present. The main objective of the research is to examine whether female showrunners play the same role as their male counterparts, both quantitatively and qualitatively, and to identify their tasks, obstacles and leadership. The methodology is based on semi-structured interviews with five Spanish female showrunners. The conclusions point out that while men are involved in all the tasks, including the choice of the people in charge of the different technical areas or the equipment, the women interviewed are involved in the management functions that are more closely linked to the script. The release in 2022–23 of four creative works derived from Les Liaisons dangereuses, on screen and in graphic novel format and in French and English, demonstrates that the novel published in 1782 remains indisputably relevant. However, all these avatars differ considerably from the text on which they claim to be based, in particular by not using the unique epistolary narrative device designed by Laclos. Now seldom read in its original form, and probably poorly understood even by those who do venture to read it, Les Liaisons dangereuses nevertheless still exudes an aura powerful enough to encourage contemporaries to craft versions "adapted" to today's audiences. Rather than belittling or condemning these derivations as facile and inferior to the original, we need to question the ways in which they "re-present" in pop culture a classic whose longevity they continue to ensure. This note presents an extension of a result within the concept of S -lineability, originally due to Bernal-González, Conejero, Murillo-Arcila, and Seoane-Sepúlveda. Additionally, we provide a characterization of lineability in the context of complements of unions of closed subspaces in F-spaces in terms of ℓ ∞ -lineability. We also present a negative result in both normed spaces and p-Banach spaces. These findings contribute to the understanding of linearity within exotic settings in vector spaces. How conventional and experimental prototypes and series created an architecture for all. Mass housing and prefabrication shaped global modernist architecture like no other aspect of industrialised construction. This book offers a comprehensive exploration of how both conventional and experimental prototypes and series gave rise to an architecture for all and responded to crises, nation-building, and housing shortages within the context of transnational and regional research. The book’s contributions explore partially unearthed empirical ground, such as cases from Finland and Sweden, while others offer a fresh interpretation of prefabrication’s role in the history of global architecture, notably in the USSR and Italy. The chapters' topics encompass colonial expansion, class, international collaboration, and the achievements and setbacks of industrialised design. The authors scrutinise the cultural impact of mass housing and prefabrication, tracing this influence through exhibitions, memory culture, and typologies, ultimately concluding with an outlook on the preservation and repair of structures and their adaptation for the future., Contributors: Mia Åkerfelt (Åbo Akademi University), Yael Allweil (Technion Israel Institute of Technology), Inbal Ben Asher-Gitler (Sapir Academic College / Ben Gurion University of the Negev), Angelo Bertolazzi (University of Padua), Tamara Bjažić Klarin (University of Zagreb), Tzafrir Fainholtz (Technion Israel Institute of Technology / Åbo Akademi University), Alberto Franchini (Technical University of Munich), Ilaria Giannetti (University of Rome Tor Vergata), Regine Hess (ETH Zurich), Silke Langenberg (ETH Zurich), Daphna Levine (Technion Israel Institute of Technology), Stefania Mornati (University of Rome Tor Vergata), Uta Pottgiesser (TU Delft), Maryia Rusak (Oslo School of Architecture and Design), Liat Savin Ben Shoshan (Technion Israel Institute of Technology), Maria Tassopoulou (Technical University of Athens), Anna Wilczyńska (Estonian University of Life Sciences/ Warsaw University of Life Sciences). Background. The relevance of the study is determined by the development of performative foreign language didactics in both Russian and foreign pedagogical science. Performative didactics offers a comprehensive approach to teaching, integrating communicative, aesthetic, and creative aspects. Objectives. The goal of the study is to characterize a series as a large performative form from the perspective of performative foreign language didactics and to investigate the potential of filming a series as a performative method of foreign language learning, analyzing its potential in overcoming the language barrier and developing communicative and intercultural competences in students. Study Participants. The study is based on the analysis of a student project — a six-part series in German, “Leben mit Akzent”. The series was created by students of the Faculty of Journalism at Lomonosov Moscow State University in 2016–2018 as a part of an extracurricular German language project. The project was implemented under the guidance of a teacher and with the involvement of relevant technical specialists and native speakers. Methods. The study uses a comprehensive approach, combining elements of historical, descriptive, and didactic types of analysis. The research methodology is based on the key principles of performative didactics: active learner involvement, performativity as a focus on physical action with an aesthetic component, contextuality, dialogicity, unpredictability, and reflection. Results. The research results show that the performative approach in foreign language teaching, which has emerged in both Russian-speaking and foreign pedagogy, is closely linked to the communicative approach. It integrates aesthetic elements and into the educational process. The study demonstrates that performative and project-oriented approaches share many similarities, as both are based on active learner engagement in the educational process. Unintentional memorization plays a key role in this process. The study comprehensively examined the structure of work on the student series “Leben mit Akzent”, highlighting the stages of the process and emphasizing the importance of each stage for learning German. Conclusions. A series represents a large performative form, the realization of which is only possible within the framework of extracurricular project activities. Creating a series in German is a multi-step process that not only involves students but also contributes to the development of various language skills in learners. Successful implementation of the project requires a high level of language proficiency from students as well as the involvement of a team of experienced technical specialists.

This study examines the degree to which political alienation viewers consider themselves to have audiovisual productions. To understand the preferences of millennials and centennials in the Spanish-speaking world, a survey was conducted with 998 individuals from Spain and Mexico, two countries with high rates of OTT consumption. The survey revealed that young people feel justified in expressing their discontent with audiovisual productions on social media, potentially leading to an “audience dictatorship, “ which stifles creative freedom and expression. In this sense, young people with discursive power in social networks to change and censor production see it as plausible to use this channel as a denunciation or complaint.

The aim of this research was to map and classify some soils of coastal plain sands origin in Edo State, Nigeria. The study covered two areas, including Site A (4 hectares) and Site B (12 hectares). The methodology used was a systematic soil survey using a rigid grid at detailed scales (1:5000 for Site A and 1:10,000 for Site B), with two mapping units delineated at each site. A representative pedon was excavated in each mapping unit, described, and sampled for analysis. Soil samples were analyzed using standard laboratory methods, and the data were processed with descriptive statistics. Soil classification followed USDA soil taxonomy, the World Reference Base for Soil Resources, and local systems. The morphological properties showed reddish soil colors when moist, with structures varying from single grain crumb to sub-angular blocky, and textures from sand to sandy clay loam. The content of sand, silt, and clay ranged from ≥742.0 to ≤886.00 g/kg, from ≥15.00 to ≤26.00 g/kg, and from ≥88.00 to ≤190.00 g/kg, respectively. Meanwhile, pH, organic carbon, cation exchange capacity, and base saturation ranged from ≥5.24 to ≤5.58, from ≥4.80 to ≤13.70, from ≥6.71 to ≤11.90 cmol/kg, and from ≥9.80 to ≤21.60 cmol/kg, consecutively. Pedons 2A and 2B were classified as Rhodic kandiudults by USDA, Rhodic Nudiargic Acrisols (Arenic, Vetic) by WRB, and locally as the Orlu series. Pedon 1A was classified as Typic Udipsamments by USDA, Eutric Rhodic Arenosols (Transportic) by WRB, and locally as the Ahiara series. Pedon 1B was classified as Typic Eutrudepts by USDA, Eutric Rhodic Cambisols (Arenic, Ochric) by WRB, and locally as the Kulfo series.

INFINITE series (Mathematics) , *ARITHMETIC mean , *POWER series , *CALCULUS , *TEACHING methods - Abstract
The Ratio Test and the Root Test for absolute convergence/divergence of series of numbers $ \sum _{n=0}^{\infty }a_n $ ∑n=0∞an are frequently discussed and proved independently in Calculus courses. The Root Test is stronger (verifies convergence for more series) than the Ratio Test. This relation inspires introduction of some intermediate strength tests (stronger than the Ratio Test and weaker than the Root Test) that we call Power Mean Tests (they, in particular, include the Arithmetic Mean Test). We show the connection between the Root, the Power Mean and the Ratio Tests. We also note that all these tests are related to the test that we formulate and call Generalised
f -mean Test (or Kolmogorov–Nagumo–de Finetti mean Test). We provide an example of an infinite series, where the Arithmetic Mean test is the test that should be used for convergence verification, because the Root and the Ratio Tests are not easy to apply. We conclude this work with the statement emphasising why it is ‘fair’ to include the summarising Corollary 3.1 in our Calculus course. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

TELEVISION dramas ,LITERARY adaptations ,LITERARY sources ,STORYTELLING - Abstract
This paper examines how multiseason drama serials, including those characterized as 'quality' or 'complex' television, deliver their continuation across multiple seasons. It proposes 'desperation' as a distinctive storytelling modality in which continuation itself and the narrative means by which continuation is managed are brought to the fore, charting how this is deployed by many shows which use season-long stories and/or stories which run for the lifetime of the show. Dramas derived from literary sources are examined alongside those where original narratives are drafted while they are already underway, and the relationship among continuation, seriality, adaptation, and literary/story-telling models is considered. Finally, through discussion of 'show bibles' and 'pitch bibles' it contends that continuing dramas effectively adapt themselves through the manner in which earlier seasons generate models and possibilities for those that follow. In this paper, boundary value problems in semi-bounded domains are considered for a fourth-order equation with multiple characteristics. The uniqueness of the solution is proven by the method of energy integrals. The existence of solutions is proved by the method of separation of variables. The solutions are constructed explicitly in the form of an infinite series, and the possibility of term-by-term differentiation of the series with respect to all variables is justified. 38. L'apprentissage du vocabulaire en français L2 avec Netflix : effet des activités de pré-/post-visionnage.

FRENCH language ,LANGUAGE & languages ,VOCABULARY - Abstract
Audio-visual inputs such as films and series are increasingly used in foreign language (FL) classes as they provide authentic exposure to the language. Several studies suggest they support the learning of new words, and this learning may be enhanced using pre/post-viewing activities. This study was conducted in German-speaking Switzerland and investigates the effect of presence and sequence of viewing activities on the learning of 51 target words. In a within-subjects design study, 97 beginner level L2 French students, aged 13–14, watched three excerpts from the TV series "Plan Cœur" (Netflix, 2018). The three conditions were: episode only, episode and pre-viewing activity, episode and post-viewing activity. The activities focused on recognising the meaning of target words. Three immediate and one delayed post-test of the same type (meaning recognition) were administered to four upper-level classes (general and pre-gymnasium classes/GPG) and two lower-level classes (basic requirement classes/EBA). Our results confirm the superiority of the conditions including an activity as well as an (unsurprising) difference according to school level. Results also show an interaction between test and condition with more correct responses in the immediate post-tests. The difference between pre and post activity is negligible. These results highlight the importance of pre/post-viewing activities when learning new words in FL. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The consolidation of streaming platforms and their strategies to capture new markets have provided an interesting window for the exhibition of local productions, but also a challenge for producers. In this text we present an overview of the evolution, lessons and adjustments that the national industry has had to make to adapt to the demands and expectations of the audiences of these platforms and we highlight the genres that have been most strengthened in this instance: historical and thriller. Both, being based mostly on real events, can be used as input for citizen training by presenting stories that, despite the universality they must have, speak of Chileans, their past, their idiosyncrasy and ultimately their particularities.
