The flight of the Micro-X sounding rocket on July 22, 2018 marked the first operation of Transition-Edge Sensors and their SQUID readouts in space. The instrument combines the microcalorimeter array with an imaging mirror to take high-resolution spectra from extended X-ray sources. The first flight target was the Cassiopeia~A Supernova Remnant. While a rocket pointing malfunction led to no time on-target, data from the flight was used to evaluate the performance of the instrument and demonstrate the flight viability of the payload. The instrument successfully achieved a stable cryogenic environment, executed all flight operations, and observed X-rays from the on-board calibration source. The flight environment did not significantly affect the performance of the detectors compared to ground operation. The flight provided an invaluable test of the impact of external magnetic fields and the instrument configuration on detector performance. This flight provides a milestone in the flight readiness of these detector and readout technologies, both of which have been selected for future X-ray observatories.

With its first flight in 2018, Micro-X became the first program to fly Transition-Edge Sensors and their SQUID readouts in space. The detectors observed X-rays from the on-board calibration source, but a susceptibility to external magnetic fields limited their livetime. Accounting for this, no change was observed in detector response between ground operation and flight operation. This paper provides an overview of the first flight performance and focuses on the upgrades made in preparation for reflight. The largest changes have been upgrading the SQUIDs to mitigate magnetic susceptibility, synchronizing the clocks on the digital electronics to minimize beat frequencies, and replacing the mounts between the cryostat and the rocket skin to improve mechanical integrity. As the first flight performance was consistent with performance on the ground, reaching the instrument goals in the laboratory is considered a strong predictor of future flight performance.

We present the result of the in-flight calibration of the effective area of the Soft X-ray Spectrometer (SXS) onboard the Hitomi X-ray satellite using an observation of the Crab nebula. We corrected for the artifacts when observing high count rate sources with the X-ray microcalorimeter. We then constructed a spectrum in the 0.5-20 keV band, which we modeled with a single power-law continuum attenuated by an interstellar extinction. We evaluated the systematic uncertainty upon the spectral parameters by various calibration items. In the 2-12 keV band, the SXS result is consistent with the literature values in flux (2.20 $\pm$ 0.08) $\times$10$^{-8}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ with a 1$\sigma$ statistical uncertainty) but is softer in the power-law index (2.19 $\pm$ 0.11). The discrepancy is attributable to the systematic uncertainty of about $+$6/$-$7% and $+$2/$-$5% respectively for the flux and the power-law index. The softer spectrum is affected primarily by the systematic uncertainty of the Dewar gate valve transmission and the event screening., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures.PASJ accepted

We present results of inflight calibration of the point spread function (PSF) of the Soft X-ray Telescope (SXT-S) that focuses X-ray onto the pixel array of the Soft X-ray Spectrometer system (SXS). We make a full array image of a point-like source by extracting a pulsed component of the Crab nebula emission. Within the limited statistics afforded by an exposure time of only 6.9~ksec and the limited knowledge of the systematic uncetainties, we find that the raytracing model of 1'.2 half-power-diameter (HPD) is consistent with an image of the observed event distributions across pixels. The ratio between the Crab pulsar image and the raytracing shows scatter from pixel to pixel that is 40% or less in all except one pixel. The pixel-to-pixel ratio has a spread of 20%, on average, for the 15 edge pixels, with an averaged statistical error of 17% (1 sigma). We report a Hitomi observation of IGR J16318-4848, a high-mass X-ray binary system with an extremely strong absorption of N_H~10^{24} cm^{-2}. Previous X-ray studies revealed that its spectrum is dominated by strong fluorescence lines of Fe as well as continuum emission. For physical and geometrical insight into the nature of the reprocessing material, we utilize the high spectroscopic resolving power of the X-ray microcalorimeter (the soft X-ray spectrometer; SXS) and the wide-band sensitivity by the soft and hard X-ray imager (SXI and HXI) aboard Hitomi. Even though photon counts are limited due to unintended off-axis pointing, the SXS spectrum resolves Fe K{\alpha_1} and K{\alpha_2} lines and puts strong constraints on the line centroid and width. The line width corresponds to the velocity of 160^{+300}_{-70} km s^{-1}. This represents the most accurate, and smallest, width measurement of this line made so far from any X-ray binary, much less than the Doppler broadening and shift expected from speeds which are characteristic of similar systems. Combined with the K-shell edge energy measured by the SXI and HXI spectra, the ionization state of Fe is estimated to be in the range of Fe I--IV. Considering the estimated ionization parameter and the distance between the X-ray source and the absorber, the density and thickness of the materials are estimated. The extraordinarily strong absorption and the absence of a Compton shoulder component is confirmed. These characteristics suggest reprocessing materials which are distributed in a narrow solid angle or scattering primarily with warm free electrons or neutral hydrogen., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in PASJ

The origin of the narrow Fe-K{\alpha} fluorescence line at 6.4 keV from active galactic nuclei has long been under debate; some of the possible sites are the outer accretion disk, the broad line region, a molecular torus, or interstellar/intracluster media. In February-March 2016, we performed the first X-ray microcalorimeter spectroscopy with the Soft X-ray Spectrometer (SXS) onboard the Hitomi satellite of the Fanaroff-Riley type I radio galaxy NGC 1275 at the center of the Perseus cluster of galaxies. With the high energy resolution of ~5 eV at 6 keV achieved by Hitomi/SXS, we detected the Fe-K{\alpha} line with ~5.4 {\sigma} significance. The velocity width is constrained to be 500-1600 km s$^{-1}$ (FWHM for Gaussian models) at 90% confidence. The SXS also constrains the continuum level from the NGC 1275 nucleus up to ~20 keV, giving an equivalent width ~20 eV of the 6.4 keV line. Because the velocity width is narrower than that of broad H{\alpha} line of ~2750 km s$^{-1}$, we can exclude a large contribution to the line flux from the accretion disk and the broad line region. Furthermore, we performed pixel map analyses on the Hitomi/SXS data and image analyses on the Chandra archival data, and revealed that the Fe-K{\alpha} line comes from a region within ~1.6 kpc from the NGC 1275 core, where an active galactic nucleus emission dominates, rather than that from intracluster media. Therefore, we suggest that the source of the Fe-K{\alpha} line from NGC 1275 is likely a low-covering fraction molecular torus or a rotating molecular disk which probably extends from a pc to hundreds pc scale in the active galactic nucleus system., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures, 6 tables, accepted for publication in PASJ

We describe the in-orbit performance of the soft X-ray imaging system consisting of the Soft X-ray Telescope and the Soft X-ray Imager aboard Hitomi. Verification and calibration of imaging and spectroscopic performance are carried out making the best use of the limited data of less than three weeks. Basic performance including a large field of view of 38'x38' is verified with the first light image of the Perseus cluster of galaxies. Amongst the small number of observed targets, the on-minus-off pulse image for the out-of-time events of the Crab pulsar enables us to measure a half power diameter of the telescope as about 1.3'. The average energy resolution measured with the onboard calibration source events at 5.89 keV is 179 pm 3 eV in full width at half maximum. Light leak and cross talk issues affected the effective exposure time and the effective area, respectively, because all the observations were performed before optimizing an observation schedule and parameters for the dark level calculation. Screening the data affected by these two issues, we measure the background level to be 5.6x10^{-6} counts s^{-1} arcmin^{-2} cm^{-2} in the energy band of 5-12 keV, which is seven times lower than that of the Suzaku XIS-BI., Comment: Accepted for publication in PASJ. 17 pages, 18 figures

High-resolution X-ray spectroscopy with Hitomi was expected to resolve the origin of the faint unidentified E=3.5 keV emission line reported in several low-resolution studies of various massive systems, such as galaxies and clusters, including the Perseus cluster. We have analyzed the Hitomi first-light observation of the Perseus cluster. The emission line expected for Perseus based on the XMM-Newton signal from the large cluster sample under the dark matter decay scenario is too faint to be detectable in the Hitomi data. However, the previously reported 3.5 keV flux from Perseus was anomalously high compared to the sample-based prediction. We find no unidentified line at the reported high flux level. Taking into account the XMM measurement uncertainties for this region, the inconsistency with Hitomi is at a 99% significance for a broad dark-matter line and at 99.7% for a narrow line from the gas. We do not find anomalously high fluxes of the nearby faint K line or the Ar satellite line that were proposed as explanations for the earlier 3.5 keV detections. We do find a hint of a broad excess near the energies of high-n transitions of Sxvi (E=3.44 keV rest-frame) -- a possible signature of charge exchange in the molecular nebula and another proposed explanation for the unidentified line. While its energy is consistent with XMM pn detections, it is unlikely to explain the MOS signal. Clusters of galaxies are the most massive gravitationally-bound objects in the Universe and are still forming. They are thus important probes of cosmological parameters and a host of astrophysical processes. Knowledge of the dynamics of the pervasive hot gas, which dominates in mass over stars in a cluster, is a crucial missing ingredient. It can enable new insights into mechanical energy injection by the central supermassive black hole and the use of hydrostatic equilibrium for the determination of cluster masses. X-rays from the core of the Perseus cluster are emitted by the 50 million K diffuse hot plasma filling its gravitational potential well. The Active Galactic Nucleus of the central galaxy NGC1275 is pumping jetted energy into the surrounding intracluster medium, creating buoyant bubbles filled with relativistic plasma. These likely induce motions in the intracluster medium and heat the inner gas preventing runaway radiative cooling; a process known as Active Galactic Nucleus Feedback. Here we report on Hitomi X-ray observations of the Perseus cluster core, which reveal a remarkably quiescent atmosphere where the gas has a line-of-sight velocity dispersion of 164+/-10 km/s in a region 30-60 kpc from the central nucleus. A gradient in the line-of-sight velocity of 150+/-70 km/s is found across the 60 kpc image of the cluster core. Turbulent pressure support in the gas is 4% or less of the thermodynamic pressure, with large scale shear at most doubling that estimate. We infer that total cluster masses determined from hydrostatic equilibrium in the central regions need little correction for turbulent pressure., Comment: 31 pages, 11 Figs, published in Nature July 8

The joint JAXA/NASA ASTRO-H mission is the sixth in a series of highly successful X-ray missions developed by the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS), with a planned launch in 2015. The ASTRO-H mission is equipped with a suite of sensitive instruments with the highest energy resolution ever achieved at E > 3 keV and a wide energy range spanning four decades in energy from soft X-rays to gamma-rays. The simultaneous broad band pass, coupled with the high spectral resolution of Delta E < 7 eV of the micro-calorimeter, will enable a wide variety of important science themes to be pursued. In this document, we describe the scientific potential of blazar observations with a X-ray polarimetry mission like GEMS (Gravity and Extreme Magnetism SMEX). We describe five blazar science investigations that such a mission would enable: (i) the structure and the role of magnetic fields in AGN jets, (ii) analysis of the polarization of the synchrotron X-ray emission from AGN jets, (iii) discrimination between synchrotron self-Compton and external Compton models for blazars with inverse Compton emission in the X-ray band, (iv) a precision study of the polarization properties of the X-ray emission from Cen-A, (v) tests of Lorentz Invariance based on X-ray polarimetric observations of blazars. We examine the expected X-ray polarization properties of neutron-star X-ray sources of various types, e.g., accretion and rotation powered pulsars, magnetars, and low-mass X-ray binaries. We summarize the model calculations leading to these expected properties. We describe how a comparison of these with their observed properties, as inferred from GEMS data, will probe the essential dynamical, electromagnetic, plasma, and emission processes in neutron-star binaries, discriminate between models of these processes, and constrain model parameters. An exciting goal is the first observational demonstration in this context of the existence of vacuum resonance, a fundamental quantum electrodynamical phenomenon first described in the 1930s., Comment: 29 pages 11 figures

We present here a summary of the scientific goals behind the Gravity and Extreme Magnetism SMEX (GEMS) X-ray polarimetry mission's black hole (BH) observing program. The primary targets can be divided into two classes: stellar-mass galactic BHs in accreting binaries, and super-massive BHs in the centers of active galactic nuclei (AGN). The stellar-mass BHs can in turn be divided into various X-ray spectral states: thermal-dominant (disk), hard (radio jet), and steep power-law (hot corona). These different spectral states are thought to be generated by different accretion geometries and emission mechanisms. The joint JAXA/NASA ASTRO-H mission is the sixth in a series of highly successful X-ray missions initiated by the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS). We present results from a 150 ksec Suzaku observation of the Seyfert 1.5 NGC 3516 in October 2005. The source was in a relatively highly absorbed state. Our best-fit model is consistent with the presence of a low-ionization absorber which has a column density near 5 * 10^{22} cm^{-2} and covers most of the X-ray continuum source (covering fraction 96-100%). A high-ionization absorbing component, which yields a narrow absorption feature consistent with Fe K XXVI, is confirmed. A relativistically broadened Fe K alpha line is required in all fits, even after the complex absorption is taken into account; an additional partial-covering component is an inadequate substitute for the continuum curvature associated with the broad Fe line. A narrow Fe K alpha emission line has a velocity width consistent with the Broad Line Region. The low-ionization absorber may be responsible for producing the narrow Fe K alpha line, though a contribution from additional material out of the line of sight is possible. We include in our model soft band emission lines from He- and H-like ions of N, O, Ne and Mg, consistent with photo-ionization, though a small contribution from collisionally-ionized emission is possible., Comment: Accepted for publication in PASJ (Suzaku second special issue). 36 pages, 10 figures

Initial results on the iron K-shell line and reflection component in several AGN observed as part of the Suzaku Guaranteed time program are reviewed. This paper discusses a small sample of Compton-thin Seyferts observed to date with Suzaku; namely MCG -5-23-16, MCG -6-30-15, NGC 4051, NGC 3516, NGC 2110, 3C 120 and NGC 2992. The broad iron K$\alpha$ emission line appears to be present in all but one of these Seyfert galaxies, while the narrow core of the line from distant matter is ubiquitous in all the observations. The iron line in MCG -6-30-15 shows the most extreme relativistic blurring of all the objects, the red-wing of the line requires the inner accretion disk to extend inwards to within 2.2Rg of the black hole, in agreement with the XMM-Newton observations. Strong excess emission in the Hard X-ray Detector (HXD) above 10 keV is observed in many of these Seyfert galaxies, consistent with the presence of a reflection component from reprocessing in Compton-thick matter (e.g. the accretion disk). Only one Seyfert galaxy (NGC 2110) shows neither a broad iron line nor a reflection component. The spectral variability of MCG -6-30-15, MCG -5-23-16 and NGC 4051 is also discussed. In all 3 cases, the spectra appear harder when the source is fainter, while there is little variability of the iron line or reflection component with source flux. This agrees with a simple two component spectral model, whereby the variable emission is the primary power-law, while the iron line and reflection component remain relatively constant., Comment: 8 pages. We present detailed time-averaged X-ray spectroscopy in the 0.5--10 keV band of the Seyfert~1.9 galaxy NGC 2992 with the Suzaku X-ray Imaging Spectrometers (XIS). We model the complex continuum in detail. There is an Fe K line emission complex that we model with broad and narrow lines and we show that the intensities of the two components are decoupled at a confidence level >3sigma. The broad Fe K line has an EW of 118 (+32,-61) eV and could originate in an accretion disk (with inclination angle greater than ~30 degrees). The narrow Fe Kalpha line has an EW of 163 (+47,-26) eV and is unresolved FWHM <4090 km/s) and likely originates in distant matter. The absolute flux in the narrow line implies that the column density out of the line-of-sight could be much higher than measured in the line-of-sight, and that the mean (historically-averaged) continuum luminosity responsible for forming the line could be a factor of several higher than that measured from the data. We also detect the narrow Fe Kbeta line with a high signal-to-noise ratio and describe a new robust method to constrain the ionization state of Fe responsible for the Fe Kalpha and Fe Kbeta lines that does not require any knowledge of possible gravitational and Doppler energy shifts affecting the line energies. For the distant line-emitting matter (e.g. the putative obscuring torus) we deduce that the predominant ionization state is lower than Fe VIII (at 99% confidence), conservatively taking into account residual calibration uncertainties in the XIS energy scale and theoretical and experimental uncertainties in the Fe K fluorescent line energies. From the limits on a possible Compton-reflection continuum it is likely that the narrow Fe Kalpha and Fe Kbeta lines originate in a Compton-thin structure., Comment: Abstract is abridged. We report on the results of detailed X-ray spectroscopy of the Fe K region in the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3783 from five ~170 ks observations with the Chandra high energy gratings. Monitoring was conducted over an interval of ~125 days in 2001. The combined data constitute the highest signal-to-noise Fe K spectrum having the best velocity resolution in the Fe K band to date (FWHM ~1860 km/s). The data show a resolved Fe K line core with a center energy of 6.397 +/- 0.003 keV, consistent with an origin in neutral or lowly ionized Fe, located between the BLR and NLR, as found by Kaspi et al. (2002). We also find that excess flux around the base of the Fe K line core can be modeled with either a Compton scattering ``shoulder'' or an emission line from a relativistic accretion disk, having an inclination angle of 11 degrees or less. This disk line model is as good as a Compton-shoulder model for the base of the Fe K line core. In the latter model, the column density is 7.5 [+2.7,-0.6] x 10^{23} cm^{-2}, which corresponds to a Thomson optical depth of ~0.60. An intrinsic width of 1500 [+460,-340] km/s FWHM is still required in this model. Moreover, more complicated scenarios involving both a Compton-shoulder and a disk line cannot be ruled out. We report a Chandra high-energy grating detection of a narrow, redshifted absorption line superimposed on the red wing of a broad Fe K line in the $z=0.297$ quasar E1821+643. The absorption line is detected at a confidence level, estimated by two different methods, in the range ~2-3 sigma. Although the detection significance is not high enough to exclude a non-astrophysical origin, accounting for the absorption feature when modeling the X-ray spectrum implies that the Fe-K emission line is broad, and consistent with an origin in a relativistic accretion disk. Ignoring the apparent absorption feature leads to the conclusion that the Fe-K emission line is narrower, and also affects the inferred peak energy of the line (and hence the inferred ionization state of Fe). If the absorption line (at ~6.2 keV in the quasar frame) is real, we argue that it could be due to gravitationally redshifted Fe XXV or Fe XXVI resonance absorption within ~10-20 gravitational radii of the putative central black hole. The absorption line is not detected in earlier low-energy grating observations, but is not unequivocally ruled out by these data. The Chandra high-energy grating Fe K emission line is consistent with an origin predominantly in Fe I-XVII or so. In a previous LEG observation the line was double-peaked, at ~6.4 keV and ~6.9 keV (H-like Fe). The Fe-K line, an important physical diagnostic in the X-ray spectra of AGN, has been notoriously difficult to measure in the high-luminosity, radio-loud quasar 3C 273 (z=0.158). On the few occasions that it has been detected its intrinsic width has been thought to be narrow (FWHM < 10,000 km/s) with an equivalent width (EW) of a few tens of eV.This was consistent with the general trend that as one goes from low to high luminosity AGNs the Fe-K line goes from being strong (EW ~200-300 eV) and broad (FWHM ~ 100,000 km/s) to being weak and narrow, or absent altogether. Here we present the results of new ASCA and RXTE observations, together with archival ASCA data, and show for the first time that the Fe-K line in 3C 273 is as broad as that seen in Seyfert 1. The line is resolved in two of the observations, with a mean Gaussian width of 0.8 +/- 0.3 keV, or FWHM of 0.3 +/- 0.1c. The smallest and largest EW measured is 43 +/- 34 eV, and 133 (+52,-53) eV respectively (quasar frame). The Compton-reflection continuum is less than 10% of that expected from a centrally illuminated semi-infinite, face-on, Compton-thick disk, confirming previous studies that Compton reflection is negligible in 3C 273. The largest values of the Fe-K line EW are under-predicted if the line originates in the disk, unless a time lag longer than several days between line and continuum and/or an over-abundance of Fe is invoked. We cannot unambiguously constrain the disk inclination angle. About 60 deg is preferred for a cold disk, while a face-on disk is allowed if the ionization state of Fe is H-like., Comment: 18 pages including 2 figures. Latex file picks up figures. We report the detection of a narrow Fe-K emission line in the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548 with the Chandra High-Energy Transmission Gratings. In the galaxy frame we measure a center energy of 6.40 \pm 0.03 keV, a FWHM of 4515 (+3525,-2645) km/s, and an equivalent width of 133 (+62,-54) eV. The line energy is consistent with an origin in cold, neutral matter, but ionization states up to ~Fe XVIII are not ruled out. Assuming Keplerian motion, the velocity width is consistent with the line being produced in the outer optical/UV broad-line region (BLR) at about a light-month from the central X-ray source. We cannot rule out some contribution to the Fe-K line from a putative, parsec-scale obscuring torus. The continuum intensity during the Chandra observation was a factor ~2 less than typical historical levels. If the X-ray continuum was > than a factor 2 higher in the recent past before the Chandra observation and the narrow Fe-K line intensity had not yet responded, then the predicted line equivalent width and intensity for an origin in the BLR is within the 90% measurement errors. Retroactive spectral fitting of archival ASCA data shows evidence that the narrow Fe-K has a variable intensity. It will be important to measure the non-disk component of the Fe-K line in other AGN to obtain a more complete understanding of the total Fe-K line emission. Measurement of the narrow-line parameters provides powerful diagnostics of conditions beyond the accretion disk and is necessary to properly deconvolve the broad, relativistic Fe-K line., Comment: 35 pages including 3 figures. We present results of new ASCA observations of the low-luminosity AGN (LLAGN) NGC 4579 obtained on 1998 December 18 and 28, and we report on detection of variability of an iron K emission line. The X-ray luminosities in the 2--10 keV band for the two observations are nearly identical (LX $\approx$ 2$\times10^{41}$ ergs/s), but they are $\sim$35% larger than that measured in 1995 July by Terashima et al. An Fe K emission line is detected at $6.39\pm0.09$ keV (source rest frame) which is lower than the line energy $6.73^{+0.13}_{-0.12}$ keV in the 1995 observation. If we fit the Fe lines with a blend of two Gaussians centered at 6.39 keV and 6.73 keV, the intensity of the 6.7 keV line decreases, while the intensity of the 6.4 keV line increases, within an interval of 3.5 yr. This variability rules out thermal plasmas in the host galaxy as the origin of the ionized Fe line in this LLAGN. The detection and variability of the 6.4 keV line indicates that cold matter subtends a large solid angle viewed from the nucleus and that it is located within $\sim1$ pc from the nucleus. It could be identified with an optically thick standard accretion disk. If this is the case, a standard accretion disk is present at the Eddington ratio of $L_{\rm Bol}/L_{\rm Eddington} \sim 2\times10^{-3}$. We present ASCA observations of LINERs without broad H$\alpha$ emission in their optical spectra. The sample of "type 2" LINERs consists of NGC 404, 4111, 4192, 4457, and 4569. We have detected X-ray emission from all the objects except for NGC 404; among the detected objects are two so-called transition objects (NGC 4192 and NGC 4569), which have been postulated to be composite nuclei having both an HII region and a LINER component. The images of NGC 4111 and NGC 4569 in the soft (0.5-2 keV) and hard (2-7 keV) X-ray bands are extended on scales of several kpc. The X-ray spectra of NGC 4111, NGC 4457 and NGC 4569 are well fitted by a two-component model that consists of soft thermal emission with $kT\sim0.65$ keV and a hard component represented by a power law (photon index $\sim$ 2) or by thermal bremsstrahlung emission ($kT\sim$ several keV). The extended hard X-rays probably come from discrete sources, while the soft emission most likely originates from hot gas produced by active star formation in the host galaxy. We have found no clear evidence for the presence of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in the sample. If an AGN component is the primary ionization source of the optical emission lines, then it must be heavily obscured with a column density significantly larger than $10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$. We report the results from an \asca observation of the QSO PKS 2149-306 (z=2.345). We detect an emission line centered at $\sim 17$ keV in the quasar frame. Line emission at this energy has not been observed in any other active galaxy or quasar to date. We present evidence rejecting the possibility that this line is the result of instrumental artifacts, or a serendipitous source. The most likely explanation is blueshifted Fe-K emission (the EW is 300+/-200 eV, QSO frame). Bulk velocities of the order of 0.75c are implied by the data. We show that Fe-K line photons originating in an accretion disk and Compton-scattering off a leptonic can account for the emission line. Curiously, if the emission-line feature recently discovered in another quasar PKS 0637$-$752, $z=0.654$, is blueshifted Ovii, the Doppler factor is the same (~2.7) for both., Comment: 15 pages plus 3 figures. We obtained observations of NGC 4639 with ASCA in order to investigate its mildly active Seyfert 1 nucleus at hard X-ray energies. Koratkar et al. (1995) have previously shown that the nucleus is a pointlike source in the ROSAT soft X-ray band. We detected in the 2-10 keV band a compact central source with a luminosity of 8.3E+40 erg/s. Comparison of the ASCA data with archival data taken with the Einstein and ROSAT satellites shows that the nucleus varies on timescales of months to years. The variability could be intrinsic, or it could be caused by variable absorption. More rapid variability, on a timescale of \~10^4 s, may be present in the ASCA data. The spectrum from 0.5 to 10 keV is well described by a model consisting of a lightly absorbed (N_H = 7.3E+20 cm^-2) power law with a photon index of 1.68. We find no evidence for significant emission from a thermal plasma; if present, it can account for no more than 25% of the flux in the 0.5-2.0 keV band. The results of a 0.4-10.0 keV ASCA spectral analysis of a sample of low-luminosity AGN (LLAGN; M51, NGC 3147, NGC 4258), low-ionization nuclear emission line regions (LINERs; NGC 3079, NGC 3310, NGC 3998, NGC 4579, NGC 4594) and starburst galaxies (M82, NGC 253, NGC 3628 and NGC 6946) are presented. In spite of the heterogeneous optical classifications of these galaxies, the X-ray spectra are fit well by a ``canonical'' model consisting of an optically-thin Raymond-Smith plasma ``soft'' component with T ~ 7 x 10^6 K and a ``hard'' component that can be modeled by either a power-law with a photon index ~ 1.7 or a thermal bremsstrahlung with T ~ 6 x 10^7 K. The soft-component 0.4-10 keV instrinsic luminosities tend to be on the order 10^39-40 ergs/s while the hard-component luminosities tend to be on the order of 10^40-41 ergs/s. The detection of line emission is discussed. An analysis of the short-term variability properties was given in Ptak et al. (1998) and detailed interpretation of these results will be given in Paper II. We report the results from an ASCA observation of the high-luminosity, radio-loud quasar PKS 0637-752 (redshift 0.654), covering the 0.8-15 keV band in the quasar-frame. We find the source to have a luminosity ~10^46 erg/s in the 2-10 keV band, a factor of ~3 lower than during a previous GINGA observation. The continuum appears to be well modeled by a simple power-law with a photon index of 1.64 +/- 0.07, with no evidence for absorption by material intrinsic to the quasar, or Fe-K emission (with an equivalent width < 80 eV at 90% confidence). However we do find evidence for a narrow emission line at an energy 1.60 +/- 0.07 keV and equivalent width 59 [+38,-34] eV (both in the quasar frame). Line emission at these energies has not been observed in any other active galaxy or quasar to date. As a class, LINERs and Low-Luminosity AGN tend to show little or no significant short-term variability (i.e., with time-scales less than a day). This is a marked break for the trend of increased variability in Seyfert 1 galaxies with decreased luminosity. We propose that this difference is due to the lower accretion rate in LINERs and LLAGN which is probably causing the accretion flow to be advection-dominated. This results in a larger characteristic size for the X-ray producing region than is the case in ``normal'' AGN. Short-term variability may be caused by a localized instability or occultation events, but we note that such events would likely be accompanied by broad-band spectral changes. Since the ADAF is more compact in a Kerr metric, it is possible that the X-ray emission from ADAFs around rotating blackholes would be more variable than X-ray emission from ADAFs in a Schwarzchild metric. Similar variability arguments also apply to other wavelengths, and accordingly multiwavelength monitoring of LLAGN could serve to ``map'' the ADAF regions., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters. 6 pages formatted with aas2pp4 and one embedded figure (consisting of two postscript plots)

We present a new, simple method for analysing gapped time-series which is particularly suited to probe the X-ray power spectra of active galactic nuclei (AGN).The method is applied to a four-day observation of the Seyfert 1 galaxy MCG -6-30-15 with ASCA. MCG -6-30-15 is well-known for rapid, large amplitude X-ray variability. In this source, our method probes the power spectrum in the range 0.001 Hz to 0.05 Hz, thus extending the high-frequency coverage by a factor of over 50 compared to previous studies. The ASCA data out a cessation of variability up to 0.016 Hz at greater than 90% confidence. The power-law index of the power spectrum is consistent with -1.4.At 0.021 Hz we can place an upper limit of 7% on the intrinsic fluctuations of the source luminosity at greater than 99% confidence. Above this frequency Poisson noise becomes dominant but we can place an upper limit of 10% on intrinsic fluctuations up to 0.05 Hz at 98.9% confidence. The data argue against orbital modulation as the origin of the variability since it would imply upper limits on the mass of the putative black hole of less than half a million solar solar masses and therefore super-Eddington luminosities., Comment: 17 pages, 4 Figures. We present the results of the first imaging X-ray observations in the 0.4-10.0 keV bandpass of the nearby starburst galaxies M82 and NGC 253. The ASCA spectra of both M82 and NGC 253 are complex with strong line emission from O, Ne, Fe, Mg, S, and Si, allowing elemental abundances to be estimated in the X-ray band for the first time in these sources. Two components are required to fit the spectra of both galaxies, with a "soft" component well described by a thermal model with a temperature of ~ 10^6-7 K and a "hard" component well described by either a thermal model (T ~ 10^8 K) or a power-law model (energy index ~ 0.8-1.0). We find that different models (with different continua) yield absolute abundances that differ by more than an order of magnitude, while relative abundances are more robust and suggest an underabundance of Fe (inferred from the Fe-L complex) relative to alpha-burning elements, possibly as a result of dust depletion. Most of the soft flux (which originates mostly within the central kpc of M82 and NGC 253) is consistent with starburst models of supernovae-heated ISM and, to a lesser extent, starburst-driven superwind emission and the direct emission from supernova (SN). The hard component in both galaxies may have some contribution from ~ 10^8 K superwind emission or individual SN, although most of the emission probably originates in point sources (most likely blackhole candidates or mini-AGN with M_Edd > 3-20 solar masses) and, possibly, inverse-Compton scattering of IR photons. The similarity of the spectral X-ray characteristics of NGC 253 and M82 to some LINERs and low-luminosity AGN suggests a link between AGN and starbursts (e.g., both may contain an accretion-driven emission component)., Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures. We present the results of ASCA observations of a heterogenous sample of 15 spiral galaxies. 8 are LINERs or low-luminosity AGN (LLAGN), 5 are starburst galaxies and 2 are normal spiral galaxies. We find that in all cases the ASCA spectra can be described by a canonical model consisting of a power-law with a photon index ~ 1.7-2.0, plus a soft optically thin emission component with kT ~ 0.6-0.8 keV. The implied element abundances are often sub-solar. The soft component is usually extended and the nuclear, point-like emission is sometimes absorbed by column densities in the range log nH ~ 21-23 cm-2. The relative luminosities of the soft and hard components vary from galaxy to galaxy. For the LINERs, the 2-10 keV luminosity of the hard component is typically log L ~ 40-41 ergs/s whereas the 0.5-2.0 keV luminosity of the soft component is typically log L ~ 39-40 ergs/s. For starbursts, the 2-10 keV luminosity of is log L ~ 39-40 ergs/s, somewhat lower than the corresponding luminosity of most of the LINERs in our sample. The hard component is similar to the observed X-ray spectra of quasars and also to the intrinsic X-ray spectra of classical Seyfert galaxies. Most of the galaxies in our sample exhibit no significant (dI/I > 20%) short-term variability (with timescales of a day or less) whereas long-term variability is common. We present a case study of the LINER M81 in detail where there is evidence of large-amplitude (dI/I ~ 70%) variability over several weeks. There is also clear evidence for a broad, complex Fe-K emission line which is compatible with an origin in an accretion disk viewed at ~ 40 deg. Micro-X is a sounding rocket borne X-ray telescope that utilizes transition edge sensors to perform imaging spectroscopy with a high level of energy resolution. Its 2.1m focal length X-ray optic has an effective area of 300 sq cm, a field of view of 11.8 arcmin, and a bandpass of 0.12.5 keV. The detector array has 128 pixels and an intrinsic energy resolution of 4.5 eV FWHM. The integration of the system has progressed with functional tests of the detectors and electronics complete, and performance characterization of the detectors is underway. We present an update of ongoing progress in preparation for the upcoming launch of the instrument.

The X-ray astronomy satellite ASTRO-H, being developed under the collaboration among JAXA, NASA's GSFC and ESA, will have two Soft X-ray Telescopes (SXTs), among other instuments onboard, with a sensitive energy band below 12 keV. One is for an X-ray micorocalorimeter detector and the other for a X-ray CCD detector. The SXT uses a conically approximated Wolter I grazing incidence optic implemented by thin aluminum foil substrates with thickness of 0.152, 0.229, and 0.305 mm. It is similar to the Suzaku XRT, but with larger diameter (45 cm) and longer focal length (5.6 m). Goal of the angular resolution and effective area are 1 arcmin and 390 cm$A2$ at 6 keV, respectively. We made serveral improvements from Suzaku to ASTRO-H, such as thicker substrates, more forming mandrels, thinner epoxy layer for replication, stiffer housings, precise alignment bars, etc. With all these changes, we have fabricated the engineering test unit of the SXT. In this paper, we will discuss all the changes made, their effects, and report X-ray performance of the SXT test unit. An angular resolution of the test unit was measured at new Goddard X-ray calibration facility (100 m X-ray beamline) and was found to be 1.1 arcmin. We will also discuss further improvements toward the flight unit to be delivered to JAXA in 2012.

The International Focusing Optics Collaboration for micron Crab Sensitivity (InFOC micronS) balloon-borne hard x-ray incorporates graded multilayer technology to obtain significant effective area at energies previously inaccessible to x-ray optics. The telescope mirror consists of 2040 segmented thin aluminum foils coated with replicated Pt/C multilayers. A sample of these foils was scanned using a pencil-beam reflectometer to determine, multilayer quality. The results of the reflectometer measurements demonstrate our capability to produce large quantity of foils while maintaining high-quality multilayers with a mean Nevot-Croce interface roughness of 0.5nm. We characterize the performance of the complete InFOC micronS telescope with a pencil beam raster scan to determine the effective area and encircled energy function of the telescope. The effective area of the complete telescope is 78, 42 and 22 square centimeters at 20 30 and 40 keV. respectively. The measured encircled energy fraction of the mirror has a half-power diameter of 2.0 plus or minus 0.5 arcmin (90% confidence). The mirror successfully obtained an image of the accreting black hole Cygnus X-1 during a balloon flight in July, 2001. The successful completion and flight test of this telescope demonstrates that graded-multilayer telescopes can be manufactured with high reliability for future x-ray telescope missions such as Constellation-X.

We present and discuss an X-ray image and a medium-resolution X-ray spectrum of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 2110 obtained with the high-resolution imager (HRI) on ROSAT (0.1-2.4 keV) and Goddard's Broad Band X-ray Telescope (BBXRT; 0.3-11 keV), respectively. Spatially resolved soft X-ray emission, which peaks 4 arcsecs to the north of the nucleus and near the position of the highest excitation optical emission line gas is seen in the HRI observation. The extent has a flux of approximately 3 x 10(exp -13) ergs/sq cm/s and accounts for 11% +/- 3% of the total 0.1-2.4 keV flux. To model the BBXRT spectrum, a soft excess component is required which has a flux of approximately 3.5 x 10(exp -13) ergs/sq cm/s and accounts for approximately 14% +/- 6% of the total 0.1-2.4 keV flux. In addition, BBXRT confirms the presence of an approximately 175 eV equivalent width Fe K alpha flourescence line in NGC 2110. Because of the good agreement between their fluxes, we propose that the soft excess in NGC 2110 is due to leakage of the X-ray continuum through a patchy absorber. The temperature of the gas responsible for the soft excess is too high to be accounted for by local shock heating. In order to explain the soft excess and extent as either scattered continuum X-rays or flourescence from gas photoionized by the nuclear source, the hard X-rays must be emitted anisotropically. However, the soft excess and extent can be well modeled as thermal emission from a hot, outflowing wind, which may also be responsible for confirming at least some portion of the optical narrow line-emitting clouds.
