- Abstract
Introduction: The use of alluvial materials (sand, gravel, and boulders from riverbeds) has a direct impact on the associated wildlife. The most affected are those species of smaller size, poor vagility and small home range, such as some reptiles. This group was selected as an indicator of the impact of gravel pit installation due to its sensitivity to habitat disturbance. Objective: To determine the effects of alluvial material extraction on the diversity and structure of the reptile communities in river areas where gravel pits are installed. Methods: The study was carried out in the floodplains of the Tehuantepec River, Oaxaca, Mexico. Six transects of 300 m with a search width of 25 m were established, three at alluvial material extraction areas and three at non-extraction areas. In these two contrasting conditions, an inventory of reptiles was made. Also, relevant variables of the habitat of reptiles were evaluated. The alpha and beta diversity were compared between both conditions. Results: We registered 27 reptile species. In the alluvial material extraction areas, we observe a lower richness and abundance (14 species and 390 individuals) compared to the non-extraction areas (26 species and 1 205 individuals). The negative effect was greater in snakes, causing a 75 % difference in richness, while in lizards it was 32 %. The abundance of reptiles was correlated with bodies of water, sun exposure and herbaceous vegetation. Conclusions: The establishment of gravel pits and removal of alluvial materials has a strong impact on the diversity and structure of reptile communities. The negative effect is greater on snakes, which disappeared from the area from the gravel pits were established. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Information on snake diet is scarce, being obtained from specimens deposited in scientific collections or through occasional records. Thamnodynastes species have a generalist diet, although predominantly batracophagus. Thamnodynastes phoenix is an endemic snake in Brazil, which was described recently, and little is known about its ecology. Herein, we report the first record of Hemidactylus agrius in the diet of T. phoenix in northeastern Brazil. Although there is a record of another lizard in its diet, this is the first record of a Gekkonidae as prey for this species. Studies on snake diet provide important information about natural history, contributing to the evolutionary biology and conservation of the species, which are still limited. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Anurans play a central role in food webs, being prey for different vertebrates, like snakes, mammals, fishes, and birds. The snakes from the tribe Tachymenini are known for their preference for preying on anurans, even different animals eventually being part of their diet. Data about Dryophylax chaquensis diet is resumed mainly by field observations and only anurans are known as its prey. Herein we report a field observation from Brazilian Pantanal of Dryophylax chaquensis regurgitating two anurans, Elachistocleis matogrosso and Boana raniceps. This is the first report of a Boana raniceps as prey of D. chaquensis, and the second record for Elachistocleis matogrosso. These present records confirm the bathracophagy preference of D. chaquensis and highlight the opportunistic habit of preying on frogs that are more abundant now. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article studies Celestina’s encomium of wine in Act 9 as a manifestation of the role she plays throughout the work as a pseudo-priestess, whether in its Christian aspect, when she presides over the «Eucharist» during the banquet scene, or in its Dionysian aspect, in which as a fundamental part of the cult of this pagan deity, wine played a key role. The article also analyzes the importance of serpent imagery in the work, especially with respect to the myth of Tiresias.

Background. Riparian environments offer microhabitats that can serve as development sites and pathways for various reptile species, however, these species are threatened by habitat loss, illegal trafficking, use and persecution by the man, among others. Objective. To analyze the diversity and conservation status of the reptile community associated with two riparian ecosystems in the state of Tabasco. Methodology. The study was carried out on the banks of the stream of the Villa de Guadalupe ejido located within the Agua Selva Ecotourism complex in the municipality of Huimanguillo, Tabasco, Mexico. For the registration of individuals, ten band transects were established on the margins of the stream 100 m long by 10 m wide, separated by 25 m between them, five transects located in primary vegetation (VP) and five in secondary vegetation (VS), which were sampled monthly during a year with the method of visual encounters (VES), conducting day and night tours. Results. A total of 391 individuals of 25 species were recorded, of which 13 were lizards and 12 were snakes. The species Tantilla rubra, Geophis carinosus and Lepidophyma tuxtlae are new records for the state of Tabasco. The diversity index (1D) showed that the lizards were more diverse in VP than in VS (5.16 and 3.59), contrasting with snakes that were more diverse in VS than in VP (6.15 and 4.41). In addition, it was determined that 36% of reptiles are within some category of protection according to NOM-05SEMARNAT-2010 and 92% in categories of the IUCN and EVS. Implications. The results of this research highlight the importance of riparian ecosystems in the protection and maintenance of reptiles, in the same way it is suggested to use the EVS as a complementary method to evaluate the conservation status of species and enrich the information provided by NOM 059-SEMARNAT-2010 and the IUCN.

The present research and development work focuses on ophidism or ophidic accident, a forgotten public health problem normally treated with antiophidic serum application. Complications are sometimes caused by the patients' delay to go to a medical centre and the health professionals' lack of knowledge on the ophidism treatment. In this work, we design, under the canvas model, a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) called Introduction to ophidic accident in order to offer a new accessible, massive and dynamic training strategy. It is nourished by the students' contribution, unlike traditional training programmes. For this reason, it is intended to promote other forms of training on prevention and knowledge of the ophidic accident, which constitute a priority in the Colombian territory. To conclude, we highlight that there is a considerable number of underestimated cases due to the inadequate registration in the notification forms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Endoparasites of the genus Porocephalus, which mainly affect lungs of snakes, are distributed in Asia, Africa and America. In Ecuador, these parasites have been reported only for Boa constrictor. Here, we report the first record of infestation of Porocephalus in Epicrates cenchria cenchria from the Ecuadorian Amazon, based on examination of museum specimens. We found 26 parasitic individuals in 4 infected snakes, with a maximum of 16 individuals in a juvenile snake, and a minimum of 2 in an adult snake. Morphometric characters of the Ecuadorian populations of Porocephalus do not agree with those described for the genus. Therefore, we recommend a thorough analysis to define the taxonomic identity of these parasites.

- Abstract
Introduction. Accidents caused by venomous animals occur with high frequency in poor communities with limited access to health services, are registered as neglected diseases and stand out as important causes of morbidity and mortality in various nations of the world, including Venezuela. Objective. We aimed at assessing mortality as a result of traumatic contact with venomous animals in Venezuela during the period 2000-2009 (X20-X29 series). Materials and methods. Data were obtained from the mortality annual records of the Venezuelan Ministry of Health. Results. Were recorded 759 fatalities, with the highest event rate taking place in 2009. Snake bites (323; 42.6%) accounted for the largest percentage of envenomation-related deaths in that period, followed by hymenopteran stings (170; 22.4%), centipede bites (106; 14.0%), and scorpion stings (76; 10.0%). The median value of envenomationrelated, overall mortality rate (per 100,000 inhabitants) for that period was 0.285 deaths, corresponding 0.120 to snake bites; 0.065 to hymenopteran stings, 0.035 to centipede bites, and 0.025 to scorpion stings. Conclusions. Considering previous records of animal envenomations in Venezuela, we provide evidence indicating a shift in the pattern of mortality towards a significant increase in the number of deaths due to centipede bites (now the third cause of envenomation-related mortality in Venezuela), and the decline of scorpionism, now occupying the fourth place in mortality. Objectives. To assess the productivity and visibility in research, clinical studies, treatment, use and production of antivenoms against poisonous snakes, scorpions and spiders. Methods. Bibliometric analysis of research and other activities. Articles on venoms and antivenoms published between 2000 and 2020 were retrieved from the Scopus database. The records were analyzed by bibliometric indicators including number of documents per year, journals, authors, and citation frequency. VOSviewer® v.1.6.13 was used to construct bibliometric networks for country co-authorships and co-occurrence of terms. Results. Australia, Brazil, Costa Rica and India were among the six top countries with most documents and were selected for more detailed analysis. Costa Rica was the country with the largest percentage of its publications dedicated to antivenom production and venomics. Only a few papers dealt with the issues of quality, safety, and efficacy of antivenoms or the role of the national regulatory authorities. The use of VOSviewer® allowed visualization through joint publications of networking between countries. Visualization by co-occurrence of terms showed differences in the research carried out. Conclusions. Working in a collaborative and coordinated manner these four countries could have a major impact on envenoming globally. Attention should be given not only to antivenom production but also to strengthening regulatory oversight of antivenom products. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Accidents caused by venomous animals represent a cause of pediatric emergency especially in hospitals in tropical and subtropical countries of the world. In this study, elements of the ecoepidemiological and clinical profile of the events caused by venomous fauna in children treated in a public hospital in the northeastern region of Venezuela are described. For this, an epidemiological, descriptive, retrospective and cross-sectional study (period 2014-2016) of morbidity and mortality caused by animal in pediatric patients (up to 12 years of age) was carried out at the University Hospital of Cumaná, Sucre state. A total of 108 accidents caused mainly by scorpions (n = 70; 64.8%, p < 0.0005) and snakes (24; 22.4%, p < 0.0005) were verified. Other arthropods (bees, centipedes and spiders) constituted 12.9% of the events. The scope of occurrence was related to the anthropic habitat (91; 84.3%, p < 0.0005) and particularly to areas of occurrence: a) intra-home for scorpions (42; 60.0%, p < 0.0005) and b) peridomiciliary for snakes (13; 54.2%, p < 0,0005) and other arthropods (10; 71.4%, p < 0.002) with their respective related activities: a) sleeping in a room (scorpions: 26; 37.1%, p < 0.05) and b) playing in the garden (snakes: 11; 45.8%, p < 0.002 and other arthropods: 10; 71.4%, p < 0.002). The period of low rainfall recorded a higher frequency of incidents with scorpions (30; 42.9%) and other arthropods (7; 50.0%) and that of high rainfall for snakes (10; 41.7%). Four deaths were found (three by scorpionism and one by snakebite), resulting in a global lethality rate of 3.70% (4/108) and by taxonomic group of 4.29% (3/70) for scorpions and 4.17 % (1/24) for snakes. The findings suggest the significance and magnitude of accidents by venomous animals, particularly by scorpions and snakes, as causes of morbidity and mortality in the Sucre state, northeastern region of Venezuela.

The Guiana Region is the area bordered by the Orinoco and Negro rivers to the west, by the Amazonas River to the south and by the Atlantic Ocean to the north and east. This area is a biogeographic unit known as the Guiana Shield, with a variety of landscapes. Located in the extreme north of Brazil, in the Guiana Shield lowlands, the state of Amapá presents great diversity of habitats. In this study we provide composition and diversity data of the Squamata from Serra do Navio (SN) region, in the northeastern part of the state of Amapá, Brazil, a lowland area of the Guiana Shield. The species list was based on data obtained from herpetological collections and collection expeditions carried out at 10 sites in the municipalities of Pedra Branca do Amapari and Serra do Navio. We consider literature data from 14 sites and SN data to compare the composition of herpetofauna between the lowland and highland areas in the Brazilian Amazon. We recorded 95 species, including 57 snakes, 36 lizards, and two species of amphisbaenians. Atractus aboiporu, A. trefauti, and Erythrolamprus rochai were described from the data collected in this study. The Squamata community of SN consists mainly of diurnal lizards and nocturnal snakes, with terrestrial and cryptozoic habits, present in pristine and altered environments. The most abundant species of lizard and snake were Loxopholis guianense and Atractus latifrons, respectively. The SN region has 17 exclusive Squamata species, with a fauna similar to the Tumucumaque Mountains and northern Pará sites, geographically closer regions with similar altitudes. In this work, we present a review on the composition and geographic distribution of the taxocenose of the snakes from Jujuy province (Argentina), based on the analysis of field-work records, specimens housed in public collections and literature revision. We analyzed a total of 819 records from 42 taxa belonging to Leptotyphlopidae (2), Boidae (2), Viperidae (3), Elapidae (1), Colubridae (3), and Dipsadidae (31). We discuss records relevant for conservation and biogeography of 18 species. Species richness is heterogeneous and variable depending on phytogeographic province and altitude. The highest numbers of species were recorded in the Yungas and Chaco, which reinforces the need to preserve and conserve these ecoregions in Jujuy. The models of potential distribution of viperid and elapid overlap with the most populated areas, thus indicating the need for the promotion of science divulgation to prevent conflicts with people and as a contribution to public health.

Snakes display a wide range of skin colors and patterns, acting in ecological, behavioral, and physiological roles. Xanthism has been reported in numerous snake species, including many neotropical taxa. Corallus hortulana is a polychromatic species widely distributed throughout South America. Yellow, patternless individuals, while rare, have been recognized as within the species’ polychromatic range. We report the first yellow, patternless specimens of Corallus hortulana collected in Bolivia and discuss whether these individuals fit the criteria of xanthism. This study describes the diversity of parasites in ophidian species from four ecoregions of Valle del Cauca and Gorgona Island (Colombian Pacific). For this, samples from necropsies, blood and feces were collected from 37 snakes belonging to the species Bothrops asper (terrestrial), Leptodeira annulata (semiarboreal), Imantodes cenchoa (arboreal), Sibon nebulatus (arboreal), Boa constrictor (semiarboreal), Clelia clelia (terrestrial), Mastigodryas boddaerti (terrestrial) and Micrurus mipartitus (terrestrial). Parasite detection was performed using stereoscopic and optical microscopy, and/or concentration and staining methods depending on the sample type; parasites were identified by morphological keys. Eleven snakes (29.7%) belonging to four species were infected with at least one of seven parasite taxa identified (six nematodes and one hemoparasite). Among nematodes, the families Rhabditidae and Oxyuridae, and the genus Kalicephalus were found for the first time in L. annulata. Worms of the order Strongylida, and the genera Kalicephalus and Ophidascaris were identified in B. asper. Hepatozoon spp. (hemoparasite) presented the highest prevalence of infection, which was only infecting arboreal and semi-arboreal snakes (L. annulata, I. cenchoa and B. constrictor), showing in addition morphological variability of the gametocytes. Annually, around 5,400,000 snakebites occur worldwide, 50% of which produce poisoning, and 2.5% of which result in death. In Latin America, 150,000 snakebites and 5,000 deaths are estimated for this cause. In Colombia, according to the National System for Public Health Surveillance (SIVIGILA, for its initials in Spanish), approximately 5064 accidents occurred in 2013. The snakes that are usually involved are those belonging to the genera Bothrops, Lachesis and Micrurus. This situation extends to veterinary medicine, since both production and companion animals are victims of snakebites in the entire world. While there is data on snakebites in small animals in different countries, there is little information related to this matter in Colombia. In this literature review, epidemiological data on snakebites on pets in Africa, Australia, some countries in Europe, in the United States and in some countries in South America are described. Similarly, the main species of snakes involved in such accidents are described, as well as the general poisoning conditions and some considerations regarding current treatments.

This text contributes to the knowledge gathered regarding the relationship that exists between 'environment' and 'cosmopraxis' among the Mixe peoples of the Sierra Norte de Oaxaca, thus showing, through the ethnographic examination of the presence of snakes in their daily life, rituals and mythical narrations of the ayuujk, the fundamental role that snakes play in the definition and articulation of the relationship between the environment and sociability.

- Abstract
Snakes are responsible for around 5.400.000 bite accidents per year in the world, with a high percentage of mortality caused by the snake's venom, as a consequence, snakes are one of the groups that present the greatest aversion in the human population, which can represent a future problem for their conservation. This paper compares a pre-test and a post-test, after three environmental education workshops where was used the methodology of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL), in order to identify the change in the conceptions on the knowledge and prevention of the ophidic accident in nine-degree students from ten different schools of the Tolima department. As a particular result, it was found that the students were able to identify the species Bothrops asper (talla equis, terciopelo or mapana), probably for its proximity to the humans and because has the highest mortality rate in the country. Additionally, in the pre-test it was detected the wrong conception of applying a tourniquet in the affected area of the bite. However, after the environmental education workshops, there was an increase of 17% in the knowledge about snakes and prevention of the ophidic accident, demonstrating that the PBL was successful in the study scholar population.
