1. The brevity law as a scaling law, and a possible origin of Zipf's law for word frequencies

Abstract

An important body of quantitative linguistics is constituted by a series of statistical laws about language usage. Despite the importance of these linguistic laws, some of them are poorly formulated, and, more importantly, there is no unified framework that encompasses all them. This paper presents a new perspective to establish a connection between different statistical linguistic laws. Characterizing each word type by two random variables, length (in number of characters) and absolute frequency, we show that the corresponding bivariate joint probability distribution shows a rich and precise phenomenology, with the type-length and the type-frequency distributions as its two marginals, and the conditional distribution of frequency at fixed length providing a clear formulation for the brevity-frequency phenomenon. The type-length distribution turns out to be well fitted by a gamma distribution (much better than with the previously proposed lognormal), and the conditional frequency distributions at fixed length display power-law-decay behavior with a fixed exponent $\alpha\simeq 1.4$ and a characteristic-frequency crossover that scales as an inverse power $\delta\simeq 2.8$ of length, which implies the fulfilment of a scaling law analogous to those found in the thermodynamics of critical phenomena. As a by-product, we find a possible model-free explanation for the origin of Zipf's law, which should arise as a mixture of conditional frequency distributions governed by the crossover length-dependent frequency., Comment: Submitted to special issue on Information Theory and Language

2. Time window to constrain the corner value of the global seismic-moment distribution

Abstract

It is well accepted that, at the global scale, the Gutenberg-Richter (GR) law describing the distribution of earthquake magnitude or seismic moment has to be modified at the tail to properly account for the most extreme events. It is debated, though, how much additional time of earthquake recording will be necessary to properly constrain this tail. Using the global CMT catalog, we study how three modifications of the GR law that incorporate a corner-value parameter are compatible with the size of the largest observed earthquake in a given time window. Current data lead to a rather large range of parameter values (e.g., corner magnitude from 8.6 to 10.2 for the so-called tapered GR distribution). Updating this estimation in the future will strongly depend on the maximum magnitude observed, but, under reasonable assumptions, the range will be substantially reduced by the end of this century, contrary to claims in previous literature., Comment: Virtually accepted for publication

Abstract

In the last years, researchers have realized the difficulties of fitting power-law distributions properly. These difficulties are higher in Zipf's systems, due to the discreteness of the variables and to the existence of two representations for these systems, i.e., two versions about which is the random variable to fit. The discreteness implies that a power law in one of the representations is not a power law in the other, and vice versa. We generate synthetic power laws in both representations and apply a state-of-the-art fitting method (based on maximum-likelihood plus a goodness-of-fit test) for each of the two random variables. It is important to stress that the method does not fit the whole distribution, but the tail, understood as the part of a distribution above a cut-off that separates non-power-law behavior from power-law behavior. We find that, no matter which random variable is power-law distributed, the rank-size representation is not adequate for fitting, whereas the representation in terms of the distribution of sizes leads to the recovery of the simulated exponents, may be with some bias.

4. Universality of power-law exponents by means of maximum likelihood estimation

Abstract

Power-law type distributions are extensively found when studying the behaviour of many complex systems. However, due to limitations in data acquisition, empirical datasets often only cover a narrow range of observation, making it difficult to establish power-law behaviour unambiguously. In this work we present a statistical procedure to merge different datasets with the aim of obtaining a broader fitting range for the statistics of different experiments or observations of the same system or the same universality class. This procedure is applied to the Gutenberg-Richter law for earthquakes and for synthetic earthquakes (acoustic emission events) generated in the laboratory: labquakes. Different earthquake catalogs have been merged finding a Gutenberg-Ricther law holding for more than eight orders of magnitude in seismic moment. The value of the exponent of the energy distribution of labquakes depends on the material used in the compression experiments. By means of the procedure exposed in this manuscript, it has been found that the Gutenberg-Richter law for earthquakes and charcoal labquakes can be characterized by the same power-law exponent., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

7. Increasing power-law range in avalanche amplitude and energy distributions

Abstract

Power-law type probability density functions spanning several orders of magnitude are found for different avalanche properties. We propose a methodology to overcome empirical constrains that limit the power-law range for the distributions of different avalanche observables like amplitude, energy, duration or size. By considering catalogs of events that cover different observation windows, maximum likelihood estimation of a global power-law exponent is computed. This methodology is applied to amplitude and energy distributions of acoustic emission avalanches in failure-under- compression experiments of a nanoporous silica glass, finding in some cases global exponents in an unprecedented broad range: 4.5 decades for amplitudes and 9.5 decades for energies. In the later case, however, strict statistical analysis suggests experimental limitations might alter the power-law behavior., Comment: 23 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

Most extreme events in real life can be faithfully modeled as random realizations from a Generalized Pareto distribution, which depends on two parameters: the scale and the shape. In many actual situations, one is mostly concerned with the shape parameter, also called tail index, as it contains the main information on the likelihood of extreme events. In this paper, we show that the mean/max statistic, that is the empirical mean divided by the maximal value of the sample, constitutes an ideal normalization to study the tail index independently of the scale. This statistic appears naturally when trying to distinguish between uniform and exponential distributions, the two transitional phases of the Generalized Pareto model. We propose a simple methodology based on the mean/max statistic to detect, classify and infer on the tail of the distribution of a sample. Applications to seismic events and detection of saturation in experimental measurements are presented.

Abstract

The distribution of seismic moment is of capital interest to evaluate earthquake hazard, in particular regarding the most extreme events. We make use of likelihood-ratio tests to compare the simple Gutenberg-Richter power-law distribution with two statistical models that incorporate an exponential tail: the so-called tapered Gutenberg-Richter and the truncated gamma, when fitted to the global CMT earthquake catalog. The outcome is that the truncated gamma model outperforms the other two models. If simulated samples of the truncated gamma are reshuffled in order to mimic the time occurrence of the order statistics of the empirical data, this model turns out to be able to explain the empirical data both before and after the great Sumatra-Andaman earthquake of 2004.

18. Ranking and significance of variable-length similarity-based time series motifs

Abstract

The detection of very similar patterns in a time series, commonly called motifs, has received continuous and increasing attention from diverse scientific communities. In particular, recent approaches for discovering similar motifs of different lengths have been proposed. In this work, we show that such variable-length similarity-based motifs cannot be directly compared, and hence ranked, by their normalized dissimilarities. Specifically, we find that length-normalized motif dissimilarities still have intrinsic dependencies on the motif length, and that lowest dissimilarities are particularly affected by this dependency. Moreover, we find that such dependencies are generally non-linear and change with the considered data set and dissimilarity measure. Based on these findings, we propose a solution to rank those motifs and measure their significance. This solution relies on a compact but accurate model of the dissimilarity space, using a beta distribution with three parameters that depend on the motif length in a non-linear way. We believe the incomparability of variable-length dissimilarities could go beyond the field of time series, and that similar modeling strategies as the one used here could be of help in a more broad context., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

The article analyzes the impact of the pandemic on the rural entrepreneurship of highly qualified young women, outstanding in the current socioeconomic transformation of their territories. Their experience is significant because they constitute enormous potential for recapitalization processes in rural areas. The analysis is carried out from an intersectional perspective, taking the axes of gender, class and age, and using a qualitative methodology through in-depth interviews. The results show how the entrepreneurs extend the sustainability values that they defend in their projects towards their relationship with work, care and affection. Their class position gives them a social capital that enables them to resist oppression based on gender and age in the professional sphere. However, this position does not liberate them from the role in social reproduction. Through these particular experiences, we reflect on the capacity for resistance and resilience of people and rural territories in situations that can become ordinary in our lives., En el artículo se analiza el impacto de la pandemia en el emprendimiento rural de mujeres jóvenes altamente cualificadas, destacadas en la transformación socioeconómica actual de sus territorios. Su experiencia es significativa porque constituyen un potencial enorme para procesos de recapitalización del medio rural. El análisis se realiza desde una perspectiva interseccional, tomando los ejes de género, clase y edad, y se utiliza una metodología cualitativa mediante entrevistas en profundidad. Los resultados muestran cómo las emprendedoras extienden los valores de sostenibilidad que defienden en sus proyectos hacia su relación con el trabajo, los cuidados y los afectos. Su posición de clase les otorga un capital social que las capacita para resistir la opresión por género y edad en lo profesional. Sin embargo, su misma posición no las libera del rol en la reproducción social. A través de estas experiencias concretas, se reflexiona sobre la capacidad de resistencia y resiliencia de las personas y los territorios rurales en situaciones que pueden volverse cotidianas en nuestras vidas.

Abstract

In this article we show the relationship between the Pareto distribution and the gamma distribution. This shows that the second one, appropriately extended, explains some anomalies that arise in the practical use of extreme value theory. The results are useful to certain phenomena that are fitted by the Pareto distribution but, at the same time, they present a deviation from this law for very large values. Two examples of data analysis with the new model are provided. The first one is on the influence of climate variability on the occurrence of tropical cyclones. The second one on the analysis of aggregate loss distributions associated to operational risk management.

Abstract

Across the world, countries have engaged in different iterations of curriculum change, and one of the common denominators of reform is the proposal of more agency for teachers around curriculum making. This is not an easy task for teachers. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the discussion about the effects that international ERASMUS+ mobilities have had on the power of curricular agency of teachers from two European countries. This work is based on an empirical investigation of a qualitative nature which collected the testimonies of four school headmasters, a deputy principal and eleven teachers from Ireland and Portugal, teaching different curriculum matters, who were involved in the ERASMUS+ programme. Our findings evidence a very positive impact on secondary teachers' capacity to self‐organize and achieve agency in relation to curriculum making by adapting their knowledge and skills, learnt through the mobility, to their own culture and context through collaborative communities of practice. Abstract

Nowadays, critical functionalities are increasingly tackled by autonomous decision-making systems, which depend on Artificial Intelligence (e.g. Deep Learning) models. Still, most of these models are designed to maximize the generic performance rather than preventing potential irreversible errors. While robustness and reliability techniques have been developed, in the recent years, to fill this gap, the sources of uncertainty in those decision models are still ambiguous. With a view to standardizing the uncertainty sources, in this paper we present a formal methodology to disentangle those sources from a probabilistic viewpoint for any (regression and classification) supervised learning model. Once we associate a formula to each uncertainty type, we expose the terminology disagreement in the literature and we propose one that is aligned with other previous works. Abstract

Deep Learning (DL) techniques are at the heart of most future advanced software functions in Critical Autonomous AI-based Systems (CAIS), where they also represent a major competitive factor. Hence, the economic success of CAIS industries (e.g., automotive, space, railway) depends on their ability to design, implement, qualify, and certify DL-based software products under bounded effort/cost. However, there is a fundamental gap between Functional Safety (FUSA) requirements on CAIS and the nature of DL solutions. This gap stems from the development process of DL libraries and affects high-level safety concepts such as (1) explainability and traceability, (2) suitability for varying safety requirements, (3) FUSA-compliant implementations, and (4) real-time constraints. As a matter of fact, the data-dependent and stochastic nature of DL algorithms clashes with current FUSA practice, which instead builds on deterministic, verifiable, and pass/fail test-based software. The SAFEXPLAIN project tackles these challenges and targets by providing a flexible approach to allow the certification - hence adoption - of DL-based solutions in CAIS building on: (1) DL solutions that provide end-to-end traceability, with specific approaches to explain whether predictions can be trusted and strategies to reach (and prove) correct operation, in accordance to certification standards; (2) alternative and increasingly sophisticated design safety patterns for DL with varying criticality and fault tolerance requirements; (3) DL library implementations that adhere to safety requirements; and (4) computing platform configurations, to regain determinism, and probabilistic timing analyses, to handle the remaining non-determinism., The research leading to these results has received funding from the Horizon Europe Programme under the SAFEXPLAIN Project (www.safexplain.eu), grant agreement num. 101069595. The SAFEXPLAIN project tackles these challenges and targets by providing a flexible approach to allow the certification - hence adoption - of DL-based solutions in CAIS building on: (1) DL solutions that provide end-to-end traceability, with specific approaches to explain whether predictions can be trusted and strategies to reach (and prove) correct operation, in accordance to certification standards; (2) alternative and increasingly sophisticated design safety patterns for DL with varying criticality and fault tolerance requirements; (3) DL library implementations that adhere to safety requirements; and (4) computing platform configurations, to regain determinism, and probabilistic timing analyses, to handle the remaining non-determinism. © 2023 EDAA., The research leading to these results has received funding from the Horizon Europe Programme under the SAFEXPLAIN Project (www.safexplain.eu), grant agreement num. 101069595. Abstract

Hyperventilation (HV) therapy uses vasoconstriction to reduce intracranial pressure (ICP) by reducing cerebral blood volume. However, as HV also lowers cerebral blood flow (CBF), it may provoke misery perfusion (MP) where the decrease in CBF is coupled with increased oxygen extraction fraction (OEF). MP may rapidly lead to the exhaustion of brain energy metabolites, making it vulnerable to ischemia.
