The paper discusses how Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) techniques can support survivability of military networks, both on the strategic / operational and tactical levels. In the introduction the term survivability has been described. Then the attention is paid to the possibilities of supporting the following situations: mobility of users (individual soldiers), network segments (entire military units at low levels of command), service mobility and recovery from the destruction of key network components. These article describes both the possibilities associated with the use of technologies widely adapted in the civil market and the challenges of using the technology in specific military applications.

International audience; Craftsmen and small businesses in the building industry hold a significant place in the French economy (98,000 businesses in the Paris region only). Craftsmen also have an intensive use of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles, as moving around tools and materials is a prerequisite of their core activity, though it can be costly and time-consuming. Parking unavailability and traffic congestion have been identified as major obstacles to the preservation of the activity of craftsmen and small businesses in the building industry in the City of Paris. Yet, existing policy support might fall short of meeting the challenges of craftsmen’s mobility, partly due to a lack of data and knowledge available to public policy-makers about craftsmen’s mobility in the Paris region. This study analyzes the mobility of craftsmen and small businesses in the building industry in the Paris region. It is based on a dedicated exploratory survey of the mobility patterns and experience of 81 managers and employees of small businesses that was initiated in early 2017. The survey used an interview guide, which included closed questions, a cartographic component, and some open questions that were recorded and transcribed for content analysis. Basic facts about the geographical organization of activities and the mobility of businesses in the building industry are highlighted. The main constraints to mobility are identified, as well as the strategies that craftsmen implement to adapt to such constraints. Finally, some innovative mobility practices are highlighted.

The major advantage of wireless networks over wired networks is mobility support for terminal mobility and service mobility. Terminal mobility allows a user along its terminals for instance mobile phones to be able to move anytime even during a communication in progress. Service mobility permits a user to use the registered services anywhere and anytime with different terminals. Now the term “mobility” may also refer to other capabilities such as session mobility, with which an ongoing session can be switched from one terminal to another without session interruption. Un exemple d'implantació de l'E-Sharing és al servici de flotes d'empresa per a administracions públiques com és el cas dels servicis hospitalaris que oferixen les Unitats d'Hospitalització a Domicili (UHD). Esta forma de mobilitat, entre altres, permet d'optimitzar els recursos, estalviar costos, lluitar contra el canvi climàtic i contribuir amb el desenrotllament sostenible de les ciutats. En este treball s'han realitzat diferents anàlisis tant generals com particulars per a determinar la idoneïtat de la implementació de l'E-Sharing per a les Unitats d'Hospitalització a Domicili (UHD), tant des del punt de vista dels hospitals com de les empreses operadores que poguera subministrar el servici. En termes generals, l'anàlisi DAFO ha permés constatar la idoneïtat de la implantació d'este servici. D'altra banda, l'estudi de detall de la primera flota E-Sharing al servici hospitalari com és el cas de la UHD de l'Hospital Mare de Déu dels Lliris d'Alcoi, ha permés corroborar el supòsit general després de l'anàlisi de les característiques particulars i l'avaluació d'aspectes com el funcionament i la sostenibilitat en la seua triple faceta: econòmica, ambiental i social. A més, s'han estudiat les principals característiques de les noves flotes d'E-Sharing al servici de les UHD implantades a la Comunitat Valenciana. In the ubiquitous network environment, the home network should be able to support seamless service mobility with fast signal processing before transporting data stream for providing multimedia services. In this paper, we propose a proxy-based multimedia signaling scheme using real time streaming protocol (RTSP) in order to support fast signaling in the home network. Implementation on test bed shows that the proposed scheme has the better performance than RTSP in terms of the signaling latency time.

Lately, the proliferation of small portable devices has driven the introduction of a new mobility concept called service mobility. In order to support service mobility, we introduce a new architecture implementing mechanisms to access end user’s personalized services regardless of his physical location. The proposed architecture leverages on mobile agent technology to transport and move services to the end user’s registered terminals and the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) for user location signaling. A decentralized approach purely based on mobile agents is compared with a centralized approach. The performance measurement results show that mobile agents are worth being used for realizing service mobility but in specific conditions.

In the current mobile network architecture, network traffic between user equipment (UE) and services deployed on the public cloud is tromboned towards the anchor point which could lead to network congestion. Deploying services closer to the UE, for example near the eNodeB, is a potential solution. The services are deployed on small scale data centers connected to, or collocated with the eNodeB, called ’eNodeB-Cloud’ (eNBC). Mobility of UEs presents a challenge for deploying services in an eNBC. When the UE is handed over from one eNodeB to another, seamless migration of UE context between the service instances running in different eNBCs needs to be ensured. In this paper, we propose a Platform as a Service framework to enable UE context migration between eNBCs. The architecture consists of handover signaling mechanism, TCP session migration technology, context transfer protocol and a set of APIs towards the service. An evaluation of the prototype implementation shows that on an average the time taken to migrate a UE context between two eNBCs is in the order of 12 ms, which is within the limit of handover interruption time between two eNodeBs. A common focus shared by researchers in mobile, ubiquitous and wearable computing is the attempt to break away from the traditional desktop computing paradigm. Computational services need to become as mobile as their users. Whether that service mobility is achieved by equipping the user with computational power or by instrumenting the environment, all services need to be extended to take advantage of the constantly changing context in which they are accessed. This paper will report on work carried out by the Future Computing Environments Group at Georgia Tech to provide infrastructure for context-aware computing. We will describe some of the fundamental issues involved in contextaware computing, solutions we have generated to provide a flexible infrastructure and several applications that take advantage of context awareness to allow freedom from traditional desktop computing.

With the advent of the Internet of Things (IoT), we are facing a proliferation of connected devices distributed over physical locations, so called smart spaces and offering IoT services. Enabling an easy and seamless discovery of these IoT services is crucial for the success of the Internet of Things. The characteristics of IoT services, such as their sheer number, their heterogeneity and their dynamicity induced by the mobility of the related devices, make discovering them a challenge. In this thesis, we propose a system architecture and the associated mechanisms to enable efficient and scalable semantic-based IoT service discovery supporting dynamic contexts. Intelligent networks (INs) will allow wide area roaming and location of individuals so that true anytime, anywhere, any form communications can take place. Personal communications will put new demands on INs. The architectures of existing INs may need to be modified to accommodate the new capabilities required to support such services. In particular, the databases that put the "intelligence" in IN will have many more demands placed upon them due to the changes in scope and content. We identify some of the teletraffic and architectural issues associated with the support of personal and mobile communications by IN databases. We first provide some context by reviewing IN architecture, personal communications, and the data required to support it. We then look at a pseudoservice example to better understand the implications for query and update traffic that must be handled by the databases. In such an environment, users are of high mobility, who roam around and access various services through resources that are available to them on the spot. These resources are heterogeneous, embedded in their surroundings, and vary from location to location. Therefore computing services should be able to adapt to different computing contexts, and it is essential for the system to support mobility and make the changing context invisible, so that users can continuously interact with the available services anytime, anywhere, and without disruption. Researchers have worked on mobility support for many years. Mobility has been considered in many aspects, such as user mobility, device mobility, and service mobility. However, little research has so far been conducted on the issue of adaptation. There are some researchers who have worked on adaptation methods, such as data adaptation, code adaptation and functionality adaptation. But they have rarely considered the issue of mobility. Research into mobility or adaptation alone is unlikely to achieve the goals of supporting mobility and achieving invisibility in the pervasive computing environment. Current mobility support would move an application by shipping its code with existing states. On the other hand, adaptability support is mostly concerned with the change of data or code, but very little with states. The state, i.e. the current status of the application, actually plays an important role in both mobility and adaptability, and it binds the two together.

The ubiquity of wireless ad hoc networks and the benefits of loosely coupled services have fostered a growing interest in service-oriented architectures for pervasive computing. Context-aware services and runtime adaptation are key to expedite human interaction with dynamic pervasive computing environments. We explore two types of live service mobility to avoid service disruptions in mobile ad hoc networks. Service migration moves a service at runtime from one host to another including its state, while service diffusion replicates the service and the state on multiple hosts. We analyse the basic requirements for service mobility and evaluate our OSGi-based implementation for service mobility with real life experiments. Our results show that the overhead of state transfer and synchronisation is limited for relatively small applications and that the delay for handing over to a replicated service in a small scale network with enforced network failures remains minimal. ispartof: International Journal of Autonomous and Adaptive Communications Systems vol:3 issue:1 pages:3-22 status: published

Widgets are becoming a natural way to design small, intuitive application, and their usage is becoming widespread on both the desktop and the mobile world. However, most widgets systems are web-centric and cannot address service mobility or application migration without heavy workarounds. In this paper, we describe a mechanism enabling the communication between widgets and their environment (other widgets, remote services). The proposed solution provides mechanisms to handle application and service mobility while retaining compatibility with existing Widget technologies. A description of an implementation is also provided.

In many areas of ICT the use of virtualization techniques has decoupled the binding between physical resources and functional roles assigned to them. While the use of virtualization in computing systems is already extremely popular, similar forms of virtualization have been proposed for the network infrastructure as well. In such a context, we propose a new paradigm that aims at extending the concept of virtualization to network services, by decoupling service execution environments and their physical location. We call this paradigm Service Switching. In a Service Switching environment, service instances may be dynamically migrated across geographically dispersed data centers to pursue better usage of both network and computing resources.

The paper proposes a methodology to provide the multimedia service framework to provide an integrated multimedia service in the ubiquitous home network. To do so, we define the requirements of a home media server (HMS), and implement its functionalities as a gateway for establishing connections between the home and external networks. The proposed HMS pursues, not only the integration of home network middleware technologies that allow automatic control and information sharing with various consumer electronics (CEs) and A/V devices, but also intended to provide context based intelligences to the multimedia services for the ubiquitous home environment .

We have designed and implemented a compact and simple network oriented device, a NetSpeaker, which mainly consists of a DA converter, an amplifier and buffers, in order to enable setting many terminals and realize ubiquitous computing environment. It receives WAV formatted data via IP packets and simply plays it by DA converting. All the sound outputs of Windows XP/2000 applications can be played on remote NetSpeakers, since we implemented the sound forwarding function as a virtual sound device, which generates WAV data of sound outputs of applications and sends them to a selected NetSpeaker. In this paper, we show design of this NetSpeaker system and its application in a service mobility environment.

Future networks need to be autonomic self-managed and provide resilient servicing, even when the hardware fails. To achieve this goal, two fundamental requirements need to be satisfied: (i) the service management and provisioning must be independent and decoupled of the infrastructure management, and (ii) a certain degree of cognitive behaviour needs to be achieved at the service management level. In achieving the first goal, which in turn will enable the pursuing of the second goal, active and programmable networks will play an important role. A problem though arises when we try to build and use actual active networks, as most research so far has focused at the node level and has left us with a unbridged diversity of platforms and execution environments, which are largely uninteroperable with each other. We introduce a toolkit that provides a set of mechanisms aiming to bridge this diversity and provide a set of functionalities and abstractions for uniform installation and deployment of services over active and programmable networks.

This paper presents a proposal for a reference nehvork centric architecture designed to enable mobility of personalired service environments across different networks and terminals. This concept is addressed in the 3GPP (Third Generation Partnership Project) specifications as Virtual Home Environment (WE). Main objective of VHE is to enable user centric communications and ubiquitous personalization, thus providing users with consistent usage experience. The proposed architecture deals with various issues raised by VIE requirements, such as: handling different front-end technologies, defining and maintaining personal service profiles, convergence of telecomm networks and Internet etc. A partial implementation of the proposed architecture, based on mobile agents and Open Service Access (OSA), was implemented and tested in a laharalory environment.

Virtual home environment (VHE) is a personalization concept introduced by 3GPP (third generation partnership project). Its purpose is to enable users' personalized settings to be portable across network boundaries and between terminals. This paper addresses a subset of VHE features, and tries to solve the problems related to availability of personal service collection when users are switching terminals. Special consideration is given to filtering user profiles according to technical limitations of the currently used terminal, so that user's personal service environment is automatically adjusted to terminal capabilities. Implementation is based on mobile agents and CC/PP (composite capabilities/preference profiles) technology for description of terminal profiles.

Next generation networks will offer new, more complex services and personalization capabilities. This will allow development of advanced personal profiles, which user will want to carry around when switching between different networks and terminals. Virtual Home Environment (VHE) is defined as a concept for personal environment portability accross networks and terminals. VHE is split into two main components - interface mobility and service mobility, and each of those is examined. The emphasis is put on categorization of services regarding their mobility, and theoretical models for each of these categories are developed. Case study discusses an exemplary mobile agent based service, for which service mobility is implemented according to an appropriate model.
