Membranes integrating two-dimensional (2D) materials have emerged as a category with unusual ion transport and potentially useful separation applications in both aqueous and nonaqueous systems. The interlayer galleries in these membranes drive separation and selectivity, with specific transport properties determined by the chemical and structural modifications within the inherently different interlayers. Here we report an approach to tuning interlayer spacing with a single source material─exfoliated and restacked vermiculite with alkanediamine cross-linkers─to both control the gallery height and enhance the membrane stability. The as-prepared cross-linked 2D vermiculite membranes exhibit ion diffusivities tuned by the length of the selected diamine molecule. The 2D nanochannels in these stabilized vermiculite membranes enable a systematic study of confined ionic transport.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a large group of engineered chemicals that have been widely used in industrial production. PFAS have drawn increasing attention due to their frequent occurrence in the aquatic environment and their toxicity to animals and humans. Developing effective and efficient detection and remediation methods for PFAS in aquatic systems is critical to mitigate ongoing exposure and promote water reuse. Adsorption-based removal is the most common method for PFAS remediation since it avoids hazardous byproducts; in situ sensing technology is a promising approach for PFAS monitoring due to its fast response, easy operation, and portability. This review summarizes current materials and devices that have been demonstrated for PFAS adsorption and sensing. Selectivity, the key factor underlying both sensor and sorbent performance, is discussed by exploring the interactions between PFAS and various probes. Examples of selective probes will be presented and classified by fluorinated groups, cationic groups, and cavitary groups, and their synergistic effects will also be analyzed. This review aims to provide guidance and implication for future material design toward more selective and effective PFAS sensors and sorbents.

Porous Janus materials have attracted widespread attention due to their asymmetry in wettability, charge, pore size or structure, thermal/electrical conductivity, and chemical activity. Multifunction integration and unique directional manipulation of liquid, ion, or gas within porous Janus materials enable rapid progress in diverse applications such as fog collection, personal moisture and healthcare management, energy conversion, water purification, sensor devices, and biomedical applications. Compared with conventional homogeneous materials, porous Janus materials not only showcase superior performance and energetic potential but also open up new applications by virtue of the synergistic or independent effects of asymmetry. This comprehensive review systematically analyzes the research progress of porous Janus materials, highlighting fabrication strategies, synergistic/independent work mechanisms, and emerging advanced applications. Finally, ongoing challenges and outlook for the future research of porous Janus materials are presented.

Summary Global water stress and challenges for producing sufficient supplies of fit-for-purpose water are amplifying. Atomically engineered interfaces are emerging as a powerful tool in the fabrication of advanced water treatment materials. Atomic layer deposition (ALD) and recently developed related methods, such as sequential infiltration synthesis (SIS), offer a tremendously diverse library of chemistries for interface functionalization. Thickness, stoichiometry, and physicochemical properties can be manipulated with precision. We review their fundamental physical chemistry and processing factors. ALD/SIS engineering strategies, including direct deposition, growth with intermediate layers, and secondary treatment are presented with realization of efficient water treatment. We lay out a pathway to establishing an ALD/SIS-based universal functionalization platform for water treatment, including sensitization strategies, in situ regulation, secondary reactions, and simulation/machine learning. We also provide a perspective on ALD/SIS-based interface engineering via synergy with other widely used interface engineering techniques to develop facile, versatile, and energy-efficient strategies for tackling increasingly complex water challenges.

Solar-driven evaporation is promising in oily wastewater treatment, in particular for emulsions, but conventional evaporators suffer from pore blocking by residual oil or contamination by volatile oil compounds in the condensed water. In the current research, we develop a suspended membrane evaporator integrating solar evaporation with oil-in-water emulsion separation. The heating and evaporating interface is separated from the rejecting interface to avoid oil escape and improve heat management. A temperature gradient forms on the membrane surface that can promote evaporation performance by combining both solar and environmental evaporation. Such an evaporator achieves a maximum evaporation rate of 1.645 kg/(m2·h) as well as an apparent evaporation efficiency of 111.9%. Moreover, the superhydrophilic and superoleophobic membrane shows excellent oil repellence and emulsion rejection, which can achieve an oil removal efficiency above 98.8% in oil-in-water emulsion separation, and high evaporation rate recovery in cycling tests. A scaled-up membrane evaporator array produces ∼8 kg/(m2·d) of clean water from oily wastewater in outdoor experiments, further demonstrating the strong purification performance of this evaporator in oily wastewater treatment.

Ionic computing raises the possibility of devices that operate similarly to the human brain

The bicontinuous microemulsion (BμE) phase is an equilibrium morphology characterized by cocontinuous domains, high interfacial areas, and nanoscale domain dimensions. These characteristics make the BμE potentially suitable for use in organic photovoltaic applications. Here, we use a combination of simulations and experiments to investigate the equilibrium morphologies formed by a ternary blend of conjugated polymer, all-conjugated diblock copolymer, and fullerene derivative PCBM. Using coarse-grained simulations, we identify the blend compositions that are most likely to result in donor/acceptor morphologies resembling the BμE. Experimentally, we probe these compositions through transmission electron microscopy and grazing-incidence X-ray scattering measurements. We demonstrate that all-conjugated block copolymer additives can be used to produce thermally stable, cocontinuous donor/acceptor morphologies at higher additive contents and longer annealing times than previously reported. These results demonstrate that conjugated BCP compatibilizers can be used as a means to achieve equilibrium, cocontinuous morphologies in donor/acceptor blends.

Solar-driven evaporation is an emerging process to acquire freshwater from saline water or wastewater, in which photothermal materials play a crucial role. Significant effort has been devoted to promoting energy conversion efficiency by material and device design. In the current review, we discuss the major factors affecting evaporator efficiency and long-term performance, including selection of photothermal materials, promotion of evaporation efficiency, and solutions to the problem of scaling. Both the material components and structure will affect the absorption and reflection of the incident light, and the evaporation efficiency can be enhanced by reducing heat loss, enlarging surface area, and recycling latent heat. Scaling can be addressed by tailoring surface properties and structure.

Sequential infiltration synthesis (SIS) is a route to the precision deposition of inorganic solids in analogy to atomic layer deposition but occurs within (vs upon) a soft material template. SIS has enabled exquisite nanoscale morphological complexity in various oxides through selective nucleation in block copolymers templates. However, the earliest stages of SIS growth remain unresolved, including the atomic structure of nuclei and the evolution of local coordination environments, before and after polymer template removal. We employed In K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure and atomic pair distribution function analysis of high-energy X-ray scattering to unravel (1) the structural evolution of InOxHy clusters inside a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) host matrix and (2) the formation of porous In2O3 solids (obtained after annealing) as a function of SIS cycle number. Early SIS cycles result in InOxHy cluster growth with high aspect ratio, followed by the formation of a three-dimensional network with additional SIS cycles. That the atomic structures of the InOxHy clusters can be modeled as multinuclear clusters with bonding patterns related to those in In2O3 and In(OH)3 crystal structures suggests that SIS may be an efficient route to 3D arrays of discrete-atom-number clusters. Annealing the mixed inorganic/polymer films in air removes the PMMA template and consolidates the as-grown clusters into cubic In2O3 nanocrystals with structural details that also depend on SIS cycle number.

Nanofiltration plays an increasingly large role in many industrial applications, such as water treatment (e.g., desalination, water softening, and fluoride removal) and resource recovery (e.g., alkaline earth metals). Energy consumption and benefits of nanofiltration processes are directly determined by the selectivity of the nanofiltration membranes, which is largely governed by pore-size distribution and Donnan effects. During operation, the separation performance of unmodified nanofiltration membranes will also be impacted (deleteriously) upon unavoidable membrane fouling. Many efforts, therefore, have been directed toward enhancing the selectivity of nanofiltration membranes, which can be classified into membrane fabrication method improvement and process intensification. This review summarizes recent developments in the field and provides guidance for potential future approaches to improve the selectivity of nanofiltration membranes.

Precise control over the charge carrier dynamics throughout the device can result in outstanding performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) is the most actively studied hole transport material in p-i-n structured PSCs. However, charge transport in the PEDOT:PSS is limited and inefficient because of its low conductivity with the presence of the weak ionic conductor PSS. In addition, morphology of the underlying PEDOT:PSS layer in PSCs plays a crucial role in determining the optoelectronic quality of the active perovskite absorber layer. This work is focused on realization of a non-wetting conductive surface of hole transport layer suitable for the growth of larger perovskite crystalline domains. This is accomplished by employing a facile solvent-engineered (ethylene glycol and methanol) approach resulting in removal of the predominant PSS in PEDOT:PSS. The consequence of acquiring larger perovskite crystalline domains was observed in the charge carrier dynamics studies, with the achievement of higher charge carrier lifetime, lower charge transport time and lower transfer impedance in the solvent-engineered PEDOT:PSS-based PSCs. Use of this solvent-engineered treatment for the fabrication of MAPbI3 PSCs greatly increased the device stability witnessing a power conversion efficiency of 18.18%, which corresponds to ∼37% improvement compared to the untreated PEDOT:PSS based devices.

Organic–inorganic composite membranes are of great interest in modern water treatment processes because they offer potentially superior separation efficiency and advanced functionality by integrating the properties of polymers and inorganics. The biggest challenge in the fabrication and applications of organic–inorganic composite membranes is the incompatibility of organic–inorganic interfaces. In this minireview, we summarize the most recent advances in molecular engineering to tailor the properties of interfaces in composite membranes. Three typical models (i.e. mixed matrix models, interface composite models, and dual-layer composite models) are presented to demonstrate how to regulate these interfaces via molecular engineering and how the interfacial properties ultimately affect the membrane performance.

Utilizing sunlight to accelerate water evaporation is emerging as a promising strategy for desalination and for distilling wastewater. Here we report on the application of ferric tannate as such a photothermal material, which is deposited onto a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane and encapsulated with titanium dioxide via atomic layer deposition. This system achieves 63.9% efficiency for the overall process, suggesting strong potential for real-world application.

Bipolar nanochannels comprising two domains of positively and negatively charged walls along the pore axis are known to rectify current when exposed to an electric potential bias. We find that addition of charged nanoparticles can increase rectification considerably, by approximately one order of magnitude. Two bipolar channel geometries are considered here; their behavior is examined at rest and under the influence of a negative bias and a positive bias, respectively. We do so by relying on a molecular-level model of the electrolyte solution in the channels. The large increase in current rectification can be explained by the inherent electric field that charged nanoparticles generate within the channel. This effect is found to be largely dependent on the pore's geometry, its charge distribution, and the sign of the nanoparticles' charge, thereby offering new opportunities for design of engineered nanopore membrane-nanoparticle systems for energy storage., Comment: 30 pages, 4 figures

Cysteine-based polyzwitterionic brushes have been prepared via a two-step route. First, poly(allyl methacrylate) (PAMA) brushes have been grown from the surface of silicon substrates using surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization. The obtained PAMA brushes with free pendant vinyl groups were further modified via radical thiol-ene addition reaction to attach l-cysteine moieties. Surface ζ potential investigations on pH-responsiveness of these poly(cysteine methacrylate) (PCysMA) brushes confirm their zwitterionic character at intermediate pH range, while at pH values either below pH 3.50 or above pH 8.59, they exhibit polyelectrolyte character. Under acid (pH 8.59) conditions, they possess either cationic or anionic character, respectively. In the zwitterionic region, these PCysMA brushes show positive surface ζ potential in the presence of Pb(CH3COO)2 solutions of various concentrations. The results are in line with microscopic investigations using anomalous X-ray reflectivity (AXRR) carried out along the absorption edge of Pb2+ ions. When the photon energies were varied around the absorption L3 edge of lead (13037 eV), the Pb2+ concentration normal to the silicon substrates, as a function of depth inside PCysMA brushes, could be revealed at the nanoscale. Both ζ potential and AXRR measurements confirm the enrichment of Pb2+ ions inside PCysMA brushes, indicating the potential of PCysMA to be used as a water purification material.

Membranes are among the most promising technologies for energy-efficient and highly selective separations, and the surface-charge property of membranes plays a critical role in their broad applications. Atomic layer deposition (ALD) can deposit materials uniformly and with high precision and controllability on arbitrarily complex and large substrates, which renders it a promising method to tune the electrostatics of water/solid interfaces. However, a systematic study of surface-charge properties of ALD-grown films in aqueous environments is still lacking. In this work, 17 ALD-grown metal-oxide films are synthesized, and a comprehensive study of their water stability, wetting properties, and surface-charge properties is provided. This work represents a resource guide for researchers and ultimately for materials and process engineers, seeking to tailor interfacial charge properties of membranes and other porous water treatment components.

Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is a powerful strategy to engineer hybrid organic-inorganic membranes with emergent functionalities. The combination of atomic-level thickness control, wide materials palette, and unprecedented conformality allow the physiochemical properties (e.g., hydrophilicity) of mesoporous polymer membranes to be precisely tuned. The nucleation of ALD materials growth on polymer surfaces relies on chemical interactions between the ALD metalorganic precursor and functional groups in the polymer structure and these interactions dictate the number of ALD cycles required to achieve a continuous coating. Strategies to enhance these interactions could enable desirable properties such as anti-fouling behavior to be imparted on inert polymer surfaces that lack the necessary functional groups for ALD nucleation. In this study, we demonstrate that the reactivity of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) membranes towards ALD metal oxide (MO) precursors with Lewis acid characteristics is enhanced by introducing Lewis base functional groups (amidoxime: Am) on the PAN backbone. The resulting Lewis acid-base interactions accelerates the MO nucleation in Am-PAN and reduce the number of deposition cycles required to achieve hydrophilicity compared to the untreated PAN membrane. Unveiling the reaction mechanism, the in-situ FTIR intensity changes established enhanced interaction dynamics between the ALD MO precursors and the Am-PAN membrane, unlike the PAN membrane. For similar MO cycles, through both spectroscopic and thermogravimetric analysis, we observe enhanced MO loading in the Am-PAN membrane compared to the PAN membrane. Here we have verified that strong Lewis acid-base interactions led to enhanced loading for a range of ALD MO materials including Al2O3, TiO2, SnO2, and ZnO. Most importantly, the Al2O3-Am-PAN hybrid membrane showed 23.3% higher antifouling capability compared to the pristine PAN membrane. Our approach expands the scope of design options for fouling-resistant porous hybrid inorganic-organic membranes and may reduce manufacturing costs of water treatment membranes.

Moisture capture coupled with photothermal regeneration provides an alternative and sustainable way to acquire fresh water. Composite moisture absorbents based on hygroscopic salts are environmentally friendly, economically feasible, and of high efficiency but suffer from the unavoidable desiccant leakage during absorption and evaporation-induced salt accumulation on material surfaces during desorption. In this study, we develop a superhydrophobic-hydrophilic-hydrophobic photothermal wood embedded with CaCl2 to promote the durability of the absorbents. The sandwich structure serves as a liquid/vapor gate allowing vapor transport but forbidding liquid permeation, enabling the condensation and evaporation within the wood. Beyond moisture harvesting, the sandwich-structured photothermal wood exhibits potential in indoor dehumidification by pumping the moisture through an absorption-desorption cycle.

The sequential infiltration synthesis (SIS) of group 13 indium and gallium oxides (In2O3 and Ga2O3) into poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) thin films is demonstrated using trimethylindium (TMIn) and trimethylgallium (TMGa), respectively, with water. In situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy reveals that these metal alkyl precursors reversibly associate with the carbonyl groups of PMMA in analogy to trimethylaluminum (TMAl), however, with significantly lower affinity. This is demonstrated to have important kinetic consequences that dramatically alter the synthetic parameters required to achieve material growth. Ab initio density functional theory simulations of the methyl methacrylate monomer with group 13 metal alkyls corroborate association energy that is 3× greater for TMAl than for either TMIn or TMGa. Janus --or two-sided, charged membranes offer promise as ionic current rectifiers. In such systems, pores consisting of two regions of opposite charge can be used to generate a current from a gradient in salinity. The efficiency of \textcolor{black}{nanoscale} Janus pores increases dramatically as their diameter becomes smaller. However, little is known about the underlying transport processes\textcolor{black}{, particularly under experimentally accessible conditions}. In this work, we examine the molecular basis for rectification in Janus nanopores using an applied electric field. Molecular simulations with explicit water and ions are used to examine the structure and dynamics of all molecular species in aqueous electrolyte solutions. \textcolor{black}{For several macroscopic observables, the results of such simulations are consistent with experimental observations on asymmetric membranes. Our analysis reveals a number of previously unknown features, including a pronounced local re-orientation of water molecules in the pores, and a segregation of ionic species that has not been anticipated by previously reported continuum analyses of Janus pores. Using these insights, a model is proposed for ionic current rectification in which electric leakage at pore entrance controls net transport.

The dewetting dynamics of a supported bilayer polymer thin film on a solid substrate is investigated using grazing incidence x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy. We find that the top layer dewets via the spinodal mechanism. The kinetics of the dewetting is studied by monitoring the time evolution of the surface diffuse x-ray scattering intensity. We study the time evolution of fluctuations about the average surface structure by measuring the two-time x-ray intensity fluctuation correlation functions. Using these two-time correlation functions we quantify the crossover from early-time diffusive dynamics to hydrodynamics. The early diffusive regime satisfies dynamic universality. The two-time correlation functions also quantify the onset of hydrodynamic effects. The hydrodynamic regime is observed during the spinodal dewetting process as these interactions are not screened.

We report the sequential infiltration synthesis (SIS) of aluminum oxide (Al2O3) into polyethersulfone (PES) ultrafiltration (UF) membranes to form hybrid nanocomposites. SIS relies on chemical interactions between precursor vapors and polymer functional groups, and enables nucleation and growth of inorganic materials to controlled depth. Using in situ Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and ellipsometry measurements, we demonstrate that trimethylaluminum associates with the sulfonyl groups in PES, extending the library of SIS-modified polymer nanocomposites to a previously undescribed polymer system and new application space: PES UF membranes. Depth-profiled x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed that the trimethylaluminum purge time dictates the extent of Al2O3 infiltration. Energy dispersive spectroscopy revealed the differences between SIS and atomic layer deposition in the membranes. This work demonstrates the viability of SIS to access the entire macroporous volume of PES UF membranes.

Crude oil fouling on membrane surfaces is a persistent, crippling challenge in oil spill remediation and oilfield wastewater treatment. In this research, we present how a nanosized oxide coating can profoundly affect the anti-crude-oil property of membrane materials. Select oxide coatings with a thickness of ∼10 nm are deposited conformally on common polymer membrane surfaces by atomic layer deposition to significantly mitigate fouling during filtration processes. TiO2- and SnO2-coated membranes exhibited far greater anti-crude-oil performance than ZnO- and Al2O3-coated ones. Tightly bound hydration layers play a crucial role in protecting the surface from crude oil adhesion, as revealed by molecular dynamics simulations. This work provides a facile strategy to fabricate crude-oil-resistant membranes with negligible impact on membrane structure, and also demonstrates that, contrary to common belief, excellent crude oil resistance can be achieved easily without implementation of sophisticated, hierarchical structures.

Sequential infiltration synthesis (SIS) is an emerging materials growth method by which inorganic metal oxides are nucleated and grown within the free volume of polymers in association with chemical functional groups in the polymer. SIS enables the growth of novel polymer-inorganic hybrid materials, porous inorganic materials, and spatially templated nanoscale devices of relevance to a host of technological applications. Although SIS borrows from the precursors and equipment of atomic layer deposition (ALD), the chemistry and physics of SIS differ in important ways. These differences arise from the permeable three-dimensional distribution of functional groups in polymers in SIS, which contrast to the typically impermeable two-dimensional distribution of active sites on solid surfaces in ALD. In SIS, metal-organic vapor-phase precursors dissolve and diffuse into polymers and interact with these functional groups through reversible complex formation and/or irreversible chemical reactions. In this perspective, we describe the thermodynamics and kinetics of SIS and attempt to disentangle the tightly coupled physical and chemical processes that underlie this method. We discuss the various experimental, computational, and theoretical efforts that provide insight into SIS mechanisms and identify approaches that may fill out current gaps in knowledge and expand the utilization of SIS.

High-density arrays of gold nanodots and nanoholes on indium tin oxide (ITO)-coated glass surfaces are fabricated using a nanoporous template fabricated by the self-assembly of diblock copolymers of poly (styrene-block-methyl methacrylate) (PS-b-PMMA) structures. By balancing the interfacial interactions between the polymer blocks and the substrate using random copolymer, cylindrical block copolymer microdomains oriented perpendicular to the plane of the substrate have been obtained. Nanoporous PS films are created by selectively etching PMMA cylinders, a straightforward route to form highly ordered nanoscale porous films. Deposition of gold on the template followed by lift off and sonication leaves a highly dense array of gold nanodots. These materials can serve as templates for the vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) growth of semiconductor nanorod arrays for next generation hybrid optoelectronic applications.

Large-scale fabrication of nanofilms directly on macro-porous substrates remains a major challenge in preparing advanced separation membranes. In this work, polyphenol/polyamine nanofilms with a minimum thickness around 13 nm were formed at the gas/liquid interface and simultaneously composited onto hydrophobic macro-porous substrates with the pore size of several hundreds of nanometers, a process driven by high oxygen concentration and interfacial energy at the interface. The as-prepared nanofilms show nearly complete rejection to a wide spectrum of dye molecules, and above 90% rejection to divalent cations such as Mg2+ and Ca2+ with a relative high permeate flux above 15 L m−2 h−1 bar−1, demonstrating great potential in ionic and molecular sieving processes.

The scale and scope of uncontrolled oil spills can be devastating. Diverse marine environments and fragile ecologies are some of the most susceptible to the many ill effects, while the economic costs can be crippling. A notoriously difficult challenge with no known technological solution is the successful removal of oil dispersed in the water column. Here, we address this problem through cheap and reusable oil sorbents based on the chemical modification of polymer foams. Interfacial chemistry was optimized and subsequently tested in a simulated marine environment at the National Oil Spill Response Research & Renewable Energy Test Facility, Ohmsett. We find favorable performance for surface oil mitigation and, for the first time, demonstrate the advanced sorbent's efficiency and efficacy at pilot scale in extraction of crude oil and refined petroleum products dispersed in the water column. This is a potentially disruptive technology, opening a new field of environmental science focused on sub-surface pollutant sequestration.

In many applications, interfaces govern the performance of membranes. Structure, chemistry, electrostatics, and other properties of interfaces can dominate the selectivity, flux, fouling resistance, and other critical aspects of membrane functionality. Control over membrane interfacial properties, therefore, is a powerful means of tailoring performance. In this Minireview, we discuss the application of atomic layer deposition (ALD) and related techniques in the design of novel membrane interfaces. We discuss recent literature in which ALD is used to (1) modify the surface chemistry and interfacial properties of membranes, (2) tailor the pore sizes and separation characteristics of membranes, and (3) enable novel advanced functional membranes.

Slippery lubricant-infused porous surfaces (SLIPSs) hold great promise in fields requiring adhesion resistance such as self-cleaning, anti-fouling, anti-icing, and anti-scaling. However, their road to practical application is still blocked by the complicated fabrication process and the restricted coating area. To address these challenges, we propose a new concept of endogenous SLIPS in which the porous structure grows from the solution coating of polypropylene/caprylyl methicone undergoing a thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) process. Caprylyl methicone serves as the diluent during TIPS as well as the lubricant in the SLIPS so that the coating can be fabricated in one step and unrestrictedly. The dissolution and phase separation mechanisms have been revealed by molecular dynamic simulation and in situ microscopic observation. Such SLIPSs exhibit impressive sliding property even for sticky and viscous liquids and exhibit extremely low ice adhesion in anti-icing tests.

The mixed-valent vanadium oxide based three-dimensional framework structure species [Cd 3 (H 2 O) 12 V 16 IV V 2 V O 36 (OH) 6 (AO 4 )]·24H 2 O, (A = V,S) ( Cd 3 (VO) o ) represents a rare example of an interesting sensor material which exhibits NO x {NO + NO 2 } semiconducting gas sensor properties under ambient conditions. The electrical resistance of the sensor material Cd 3 (VO) o decreases in air. Combined characterization studies revealed that the building block, {V 18 O 42 (AO 4 )} cluster, of 3-D framework undergoes oxidation and remains intact for at least 2 months. The decrease in resistance is attributable to the reactivity of molecular oxygen towards vanadium which results in an increase in the oxidation state as well as the coordination number of vanadium center and decrease in band gap of Cd 3 (VO) o . Based on these results we propose that the changes in semiconducting properties of Cd 3 (VO) o under ambient conditions are due to the greater overlap between the O 2p and V 3d orbitals occurring during the oxidation.

There are broad interests in selective and localized synthesis in nanodomains of self-assembled block copolymers (BCPs) for a variety of applications. Sequential infiltration synthesis (SIS) shows promise to selectively grow a controllable amount of materials in one type of nanodomain of a self-assembled BCP film. However, the effects of nanostructured domains in a BCP film and SIS cycles on the material growth behavior of SIS are rarely studied. In this work, we investigated the growth behavior of TiO2 SIS within self-assembled polystyrene-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PS-b-PMMA) films and the two corresponding pure homopolymer films (PS and PMMA) by using in situ quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). Membranes are compelling candidates for many separation-based industrial processes. However, all synthetic membranes are subject to well-recognized permeability-selectivity trade-offs that hinder their use in advanced applications. Having uniform nanoscale pore size, isoporous nanofiltration and ultrafiltration membranes have attracted wide research interest. However, quantitative analysis of isoporous membrane performance is lacking – particularly at module and system-level scales. In this study, an analytical model is built to investigate how membrane pore-size distribution affects the solute separation efficiency (i.e., rejection and selectivity). The model accounts for convective hindrance as well as concentration polarization and explores effects on separation from the solute-to-pore-size ratio and percent recovery (i.e., fraction of feed flow that passes through the membrane). At the module level, our analysis suggests that a notably sharper rejection vs. solute size curve can be obtained as the pore-size distribution becomes narrower. As the recovery increases, the rejection of a solute is maintained at a high level using isoporous membranes while the rejection drops rapidly for membranes that possess a disperse pore-size distribution. Furthermore, in the separation of mixed solutes, isoporous membranes achieve a large selectivity with a modest loss of permeability. Overall, this study elaborates the unique role that isoporous membranes play within the permeability-selectivity trade-off relations and identifies the most exciting opportunities for their future applications.

Organic photovoltaics (OPVs) are a promising carbon-neutral energy conversion technology, with recent improvements pushing power conversion efficiencies over 10%. A major factor limiting OPV performance is inefficiency of charge transport in organic semiconducting materials (OSCs). Due to strong coupling with lattice degrees of freedom, the charges form polarons, localized quasi-particles comprised of charges dressed with phonons. These polarons can be conceptualized as pseudo-atoms with a greater effective mass than a bare charge. We propose that due to this increased mass, polarons can be modeled with Langevin molecular dynamics (LMD), a classical approach with a computational cost much lower than most quantum mechanical methods. Here we present LMD simulations of charge transfer between a pair of fullerene molecules, which commonly serve as electron acceptors in OSCs. We find transfer rates consistent with experimental measurements of charge mobility, suggesting that this method may provide quantitative predictions of efficiency when used to simulate materials on the device scale. Our approach also offers information that is not captured in the overall transfer rate or mobility: in the simulation data, we observe exactly when and why intermolecular transfer events occur. In addition, we demonstrate that these simulations can shed light on the properties of polarons in OSCs. Much remains to be learned about these quasi-particles, and there are no widely accepted methods for calculating properties such as effective mass and friction. Our model offers a promising approach to exploring mass and friction as well as providing insight into the details of polaron transport in OSCs.

Disasters on the scale of the Exxon Valdez and Deepwater Horizon serve as harrowing reminders of the devastating effects uncontrolled oil spills have on the environment. Skimming, burning, and dispersing oil are only partially effective and carry their own ecological impacts. An enticing alternative strategy involves oil sorbents capable of efficient extraction of oil from water bodies, which in turn necessitates the design and implementation of novel materials Here, we extend methods of sequential infiltration synthesis (SIS) traditionally only applied to nanometer scale thin films to create oil sorbents based on macroscopic, commercially available polymeric foams. Targeting superoleophilic and superhydrophobic chemistries, we demonstrate the propensity of SIS-based modifications in oil spill remediation and demonstrate its efficacy in crude oil sorption in model seawater. We find crude oil sorption on the order of 30 and 90 times the initial foam weight for polyurethane and polyimide, respectively, both with highly favorable reusability.

The fabrication of devices containing thin film composite membranes necessitates the transfer of these films onto the surfaces of arbitrary support substrates. Accomplishing this transfer in a highly controlled, mechanized, and reproducible manner can eliminate the creation of macroscale defect structures (e.g., tears, cracks, and wrinkles) within the thin film that compromise device performance and the usable area per sample. Here, we describe a general protocol for the highly controlled and mechanized transfer of a polymeric thin film onto an arbitrary porous support substrate for eventual use as a water filtration membrane device. Specifically, we fabricate a block copolymer (BCP) thin film on top of a sacrificial, water-soluble poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) layer and silicon wafer substrate. We then utilize a custom-designed, 3D-printed transfer tool and drain chamber system to deposit, lift-off, and transfer the BCP thin film onto the center of a porous anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) support disc. The transferred BCP thin film is shown to be consistently placed onto the center of the support surface due to the guidance of the meniscus formed between the water and the 3D-printed plastic drain chamber. We also compare our mechanized transfer-processed thin films to those that have been transferred by hand with the use of tweezers. Optical inspection and image analysis of the transferred thin films from the mechanized process confirm that little-to-no macroscale inhomogeneities or plastic deformations are produced, as compared to the multitude of tears and wrinkles produced from manual transfer by hand. Our results suggest that the proposed strategy for thin film transfer can reduce defects when compared to other methods across many systems and applications.

Scanning tunneling microscopy is utilized to investigate the local density of states of a CH3NH3PbI3–xClx perovskite in cross-sectional geometry. Two electronic phases, 10–20 nm in size, with different electronic properties inside the CH3NH3PbI3–xClx perovskite layer are observed by the dI/dV mapping and point spectra. A power law dependence of the dI/dV point spectra is revealed. In addition, the distinct electronic phases are found to have preferential orientations close to the normal direction of the film surface. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the observed electronic phases are associated with local deviation of I/Cl ratio, rather than different orientations of the electric dipole moments in the ferroelectric phases. By comparing the calculated results with experimental data we conclude that phase A (lower contrast in dI/dV mapping at −2.0 V bias) contains a lower I/Cl ratio than that in phase B (higher contrast in dI/dV).

Water purification for human use, ecosystem management, agriculture, and industry is emerging as a leading global priority. Access to sufficient clean water ultimately requires improvements over the current state of water filtration technology. Membrane technologies for water purification have been actively pursued for decades, but with recent innovation of both analytical and fabrication tools, more advanced membrane technologies are surfacing. Here, we review the design, development, and application of new membrane materials, fabrication methods for controlling the filtration size regime, analytical tools for performance testing, and molecular modeling for transport and separation. Membrane chemical stability, fouling, and environmental impact as open questions are also presented.
