1. Evaluating link prediction: New perspectives and recommendations

Abstract: Link prediction (LP) is an important problem in network science and machine learning research. The state-of-the-art LP methods are usually evaluated in a uniform setup, ignoring several factors associated with the data and application specific needs. We identify a number of such factors, such as, network-type, problem-type, geodesic distance between the end nodes and its distribution over the classes, nature and applicability of LP methods, class imbalance and its impact on early retrieval, evaluation metric, etc., and present an experimental setup which allows us to evaluate LP methods in a rigorous and controlled manner. We perform extensive experiments with a variety of LP methods over real network datasets in this controlled setup, and gather valuable insights on the interactions of these factors with the performance of LP through an array of carefully designed hypotheses. Following the insights, we provide recommendations to be followed as best practice for evaluating LP methods.

2. A Tale of Two Imperatives: Privacy and Explainability

Abstract: Deep learning's preponderance across scientific domains has reshaped high-stakes decision-making, making it essential to follow rigorous operational frameworks that include both Right-to-Privacy (RTP) and Right-to-Explanation (RTE). This paper examines the complexities of combining these two requirements. For RTP, we focus on `Differential privacy' (DP), which is considered the current \textit{gold standard} for privacy-preserving machine learning due to its strong quantitative guarantee of privacy. For RTE, we focus on post-hoc explainers: they are the \textit{go-to} option for model auditing as they operate independently of model training. We formally investigate DP models and various commonly-used post-hoc explainers: how to evaluate these explainers subject to RTP, and analyze the intrinsic interactions between DP models and these explainers. Furthermore, our work throws light on how RTP and RTE can be effectively combined in high-stakes applications. Our study concludes by outlining an industrial software pipeline, with the example of a wildly used use-case, that respects both RTP and RTE requirements., Comment: 45 pages, 12 figures

Abstract: Intermediate mass black holes (10^2 < M_BH< 10^5 Msun) are an open question in our understanding of black hole evolution and growth. They have long been linked to dense star cluster environments thanks to cluster dynamics, but there are a limited number of secure detections. We leverage existing X-ray observations from Chandra X-ray Observatory and optical catalogs from Hubble Space Telescope with new radio observations from the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array to search for any evidence of accreting black holes in young massive clusters in the nearby galaxy M51. We find that of 43 bright ($L_X > 10^{38}$ erg/s) X-ray point sources in M51, 24 had probable matches to objects including possible associated star clusters in the HST Legacy Extragalactic UV Survey catalog, seven of which were classified as contaminants (background galaxies or foreground stars). We explore the optical properties of the remaining 17 sources, including cluster age and mass estimates, and search for radio counterparts in the 8-12 GHz band. The lack of radio counterparts to X-ray sources we know to be associated with young massive clusters in M51 suggests that we do not significantly detect hard-state IMBHs ~ 10^4 Msun or above. However, more sensitive radio facilities like the Square Kilometre Array and next generation Very Large Array may be able to provide evidence for IMBHs with masses down to ~ 10^3 Msun., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures, accepted to ApJ

4. Safety cases for frontier AI

Abstract: As frontier artificial intelligence (AI) systems become more capable, it becomes more important that developers can explain why their systems are sufficiently safe. One way to do so is via safety cases: reports that make a structured argument, supported by evidence, that a system is safe enough in a given operational context. Safety cases are already common in other safety-critical industries such as aviation and nuclear power. In this paper, we explain why they may also be a useful tool in frontier AI governance, both in industry self-regulation and government regulation. We then discuss the practicalities of safety cases, outlining how to produce a frontier AI safety case and discussing what still needs to happen before safety cases can substantially inform decisions., Comment: 25 pages, 6 figures, 5 tables

5. Faithfulness and the Notion of Adversarial Sensitivity in NLP Explanations

Abstract: Faithfulness is arguably the most critical metric to assess the reliability of explainable AI. In NLP, current methods for faithfulness evaluation are fraught with discrepancies and biases, often failing to capture the true reasoning of models. We introduce Adversarial Sensitivity as a novel approach to faithfulness evaluation, focusing on the explainer's response when the model is under adversarial attack. Our method accounts for the faithfulness of explainers by capturing sensitivity to adversarial input changes. Abstract: We report the first measurement of the azimuthal anisotropy of J$/\psi$ at forward rapidity ($1.2<|\eta|<2.2$) in Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The data were collected by the PHENIX experiment in 2014 and 2016 with integrated luminosity of 14.5~nb$^{-1}$. The second Fourier coefficient ($v_2$) of the azimuthal distribution of $J/\psi$ is determined as a function of the transverse momentum ($p_T$) using the event-plane method. The measurements were performed for several selections of collision centrality: 0\%--50\%, 10\%--60\%, and 10\%-40\%. We find that in all cases the values of $v_2(p_T)$, which quantify the elliptic flow of J$/\psi$, are consistent with zero. The results are consistent with measurements at midrapidity, indicating no significant elliptic flow of the J$/\psi$ within the quark-gluon-plasma medium at collision energies of $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV., Comment: 369 authors from 72 institutions, 12 pages, 7 figures, 5 tables. v1 is version submitted to Physical Review C. Abstract: The implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the healthcare industry has garnered considerable attention, attributable to its prospective enhancement of clinical outcomes, expansion of access to superior healthcare, cost reduction, and elevation of patient satisfaction. Nevertheless, the primary hurdle that persists is related to the quality of accessible multi-modal healthcare data in conjunction with the evolution of AI methodologies. This study delves into the adoption of large language models to address specific challenges, specifically, the standardization of healthcare data. We advocate the use of these models to identify and map clinical data schemas to established data standard attributes, such as the Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources. Our results illustrate that employing large language models significantly diminishes the necessity for manual data curation and elevates the efficacy of the data standardization process. 11. Need of AI in Modern Education: in the Eyes of Explainable AI (xAI)

Abstract: Modern Education is not \textit{Modern} without AI. However, AI's complex nature makes understanding and fixing problems challenging. Research worldwide shows that a parent's income greatly influences a child's education. This led us to explore how AI, especially complex models, makes important decisions using Explainable AI tools. Our research uncovered many complexities linked to parental income and offered reasonable explanations for these decisions. However, we also found biases in AI that go against what we want from AI in education: clear transparency and equal access for everyone. These biases can impact families and children's schooling, highlighting the need for better AI solutions that offer fair opportunities to all. This chapter tries to shed light on the complex ways AI operates, especially concerning biases. 12. Imaging pulsar census of the Galactic Plane using MWA VCS data

Abstract: Traditional pulsar surveys have primarily employed time-domain periodicity searches. However, these methods are susceptible to effects like scattering, eclipses and orbital motion. At lower radio frequencies (<= 300 MHz), factors such as dispersion measure and pulse broadening become more prominent, reducing the detection sensitivity. On the other hand, image domain searches for pulsars are not limited by these effects and can extend the parameter space to regions inaccessible to traditional search techniques. Therefore, we have developed a pipeline to form 1-second full Stokes images from offline correlated high time-resolution data from the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA). This led to the development of image-based methodologies to identify new pulsar candidates. In this paper, we applied these methodologies to perform a low-frequency image-based pulsar census of the Galactic Plane ( 12 MWA observations, covering ~6000 deg^2 sky ). This work focuses on the detection of the known pulsar population which were present in the observed region of the sky using both image-based and beamformed methods. This resulted in the detection of 83 known pulsars, with 16 pulsars found only in Stokes I images but not in periodicity searches applied in beamformed data. Notably, for 14 pulsars these are the first reported low-frequency detections. This underscores the importance of image-based searches for pulsars that may be undetectable in time-series data, due to scattering and/or dispersive smearing at low frequencies. Abstract: High-momentum two-particle correlations are a useful tool for studying jet-quenching effects in the quark-gluon plasma. Angular correlations between neutral-pion triggers and charged hadrons with transverse momenta in the range 4--12~GeV/$c$ and 0.5--7~GeV/$c$, respectively, have been measured by the PHENIX experiment in 2014 for Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$~GeV. Suppression is observed in the yield of high-momentum jet fragments opposite the trigger particle, which indicates jet suppression stemming from in-medium partonic energy loss, while enhancement is observed for low-momentum particles. The ratio and differences between the yield in Au$+$Au collisions and $p$$+$$p$ collisions, $I_{AA}$ and $\Delta_{AA}$, as a function of the trigger-hadron azimuthal separation, $\Delta\phi$, are measured for the first time at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Abstract: At near-parallel orientation, twisted bilayer of transition metal dichalcogenides exhibit inter-layer charge transfer-driven out-of-plane ferroelectricity that may lead to unique electronic device architectures. Here we report detailed electrical transport in a dual-gated graphene field-effect transistor placed on 3R stacked twisted bilayer of WSe2 at a twist angle of 2.1 degree. We observe hysteretic transfer characteristics and an emergent charge inhomogeneity with multiple local Dirac points as the electric displacement field (D) is increased. Concomitantly, we also observe a strong non-local voltage signal at D = 0 V/nm that decreases rapidly with increasing D. A linear scaling of the non-local signal with longitudinal resistance suggests edge mode transport, which we attribute to the breaking of valley symmetry of the graphene channel due to the spatially fluctuating electric field from the moire domains of the underlying twisted WSe2. A quantitative analysis connecting the non-locality and channel inhomogeneity suggests emergence of finite-size domains in the graphene channel that modulate the charge and the valley currents simultaneously. This work underlines efficient control and impact of interfacial ferroelectricity that can trigger a new genre of devices for twistronic applications., Comment: 16 pages, 15 figures

Abstract: The PHENIX experiment has performed a systematic study of identified charged-hadron ($\pi^\pm$, $K^\pm$, $p$, $\bar{p}$) production at midrapidity in $p$$+$Al, $^3$He$+$Au, Cu$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV and U$+$U collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=193$ GeV. Identified charged-hadron invariant transverse-momentum ($p_T$) and transverse-mass ($m_T$) spectra are presented and interpreted in terms of radially expanding thermalized systems. The particle ratios of $K/\pi$ and $p/\pi$ have been measured in different centrality ranges of large (Cu$+$Au, U$+$U) and small ($p$$+$Al, $^3$He$+$Au) collision systems. The values of $K/\pi$ ratios measured in all considered collision systems were found to be consistent with those measured in $p$$+$$p$ collisions. However the values of $p/\pi$ ratios measured in large collision systems reach the values of $\approx0.6$, which is $\approx2$ times larger than in $p$$+$$p$ collisions. These results can be qualitatively understood in terms of the baryon enhancement expected from hadronization by recombination. Identified charged-hadron nuclear-modification factors ($R_{AB}$) are also presented. Enhancement of proton $R_{AB}$ values over meson $R_{AB}$ values was observed in central $^3$He$+$Au, Cu$+$Au, and U$+$U collisions. The proton $R_{AB}$ values measured in $p$$+$Al collision system were found to be consistent with $R_{AB}$ values of $\phi$, $\pi^\pm$, $K^\pm$, and $\pi^0$ mesons, which may indicate that the size of the system produced in $p$$+$Al collisions is too small for recombination to cause a noticeable increase in proton production., Comment: 480 authors from 78 institutions, 18 pages, 6 tables, 16 figures. v2 is version accepted for publication in Physical Review C. Abstract: Astronomers have studied the Vela pulsar (PSR~J0835$-$4510) for decades. This study analyses almost one hundred hours of single-pulse data collected over three consecutive days from 2016 and 2020. The work investigates the fascinating phenomena of the earlier arrival of brighter pulses with their increase in peak intensity. We found a hyperbolic relation between them by constructing integrated pulse profiles using flux density intervals and examining the relationship between pulse arrival time and intensity. We identified a phase limit of $-0.85~\pm 0.0109$~ms for the earliest arrival of the brightest pulses. 20. Single-pulse analysis and average emission characteristics of PSR J1820-0427 from observations made with the MWA and uGMRT

Abstract: We have studied the pulse-to-pulse variability in PSR J1820--0427 and its frequency dependence using high-quality, wide-band observations made from the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT; 300-750 MHz) and the Murchison Widefield Array ($\sim$170-200 MHz). The low-frequency data reveal a previously unreported feature in the average profile (at 185 MHz) after accounting for the effects of temporal broadening arising from multi-path scattering due to the Interstellar Medium (ISM). We advance a new method for flux density calibration of beamformed data from the uGMRT and use it to measure the single pulse flux densities across the uGMRT band. Combined with previously published measurements, these flux densities are best fit with a power-law spectrum with a low-frequency turnover. We also use calibrated flux densities to explore the relationship between pulse-to-pulse variability and the spectral index of individual pulses. Our analysis reveals a large scatter in the single-pulse spectral indices and a general tendency for brighter pulses to show a steepening of the spectral index. Abstract: Pulsars have proven instrumental in exploring a wide variety of physics. Pulsars at low radio frequencies is crucial to further our understanding of spectral properties and emission mechanisms.The Murchison Widefield Array Voltage Capture System (MWA-VCS) has been routinely used to study and discover pulsars at low frequencies, offering the unique opportunity of recording complex voltages ,which can be off-line beamformed or imaged at millisecond time resolution.Devising imaged-based methods for finding pulsar candidates, which can be verified in beamformed data, can accelerate the complete process and lead to more pulsar detections by reducing the number of tied-array beams required, increasing compute resource efficiency.Despite a factor of ~4 loss in sensitivity, searching for pulsar candidates in images from the MWA-VCS, we can explore a larger parameter space, potentially leading to discoveries of pulsars missed by high-frequency surveys such as pulsars obscured in high-time resolution timeseries data by propagation effects.Image-based searches are also essential to probing parts of parameter space inaccessible to traditional beamformed searches with the MWA.In this paper we describe the innovative approach and capability of dual-processing MWA VCS data, i.e. finding pulsar candidates in these images, and verifying by forming tied-array beam.We developed and tested image-based methods of finding pulsar candidates, based on pulsar properties such as spectral index, polarisation and variability.The efficiency of these methodologies has been verified on known pulsars, and the main limitations explained in terms of sensitivity and low-frequency spectral turnover of some pulsars.No candidates were confirmed to be a new pulsar.This new capability will now be applied to multiple observations to accelerate pulsar discoveries with MWA and speed up future searches with the SKA-Low., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in Publications of the Astronomical Society of Australia (PASA)

24. Emergent macroscopic bistability induced by a single superconducting qubit

Abstract: The photon blockade breakdown in a continuously driven cavity QED system has been proposed as a prime example for a first-order driven-dissipative quantum phase transition. But the predicted scaling from a microscopic system - dominated by quantum fluctuations - to a macroscopic one - characterized by stable phases - and the associated exponents and phase diagram have not been observed so far. In this work we couple a single transmon qubit with a fixed coupling strength $g$ to an in-situ bandwidth $\kappa$ tuneable superconducting cavity to controllably approach this thermodynamic limit. Even though the system remains microscopic, we observe its behavior to become more and more macroscopic as a function of $g/\kappa$. For the highest realized $g/\kappa \approx 287$ the system switches with a characteristic dwell time as high as 6 seconds between a bright coherent state with $\approx 8 \times 10^3$ intra-cavity photons and the vacuum state with equal probability. This exceeds the microscopic time scales by six orders of magnitude and approaches the near perfect hysteresis expected between two macroscopic attractors in the thermodynamic limit. These findings and interpretation are qualitatively supported by semi-classical theory and large-scale Quantum-Jump Monte Carlo simulations. Besides shedding more light on driven-dissipative physics in the limit of strong light-matter coupling, this system might also find applications in quantum sensing and metrology., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures

25. Tuning exciton complexes in twisted bilayer WSe2 at intermediate misorientation

Abstract: Twist angle modifies the band alignment, screening, and interlayer (IL) coupling in twisted bilayers (tBLs) of transition metal dichalcogenides. Intermediate misorientation (twist angles > 15 degrees) bilayers (BLs) offer a unique opportunity to tune excitonic behavior within these concurrent physical mechanisms but are seldom studied. In this paper, we measure many-body excitonic complexes in monolayer (ML), natural BL, and tBL WSe2. Neutral biexciton (XX) is observed in tBL, while being undetected in nonencapsulated ML and BL, demonstrating unique effects of disorder screening in tBLs. The XX as well as charged biexciton are robust to thermal dissociation and are controllable by electrostatic doping. Vanishing of momentum-indirect IL excitons with increasing electron doping is demonstrated in tBL, resulting from the near alignment of Q-K and K-K valleys. Intermediate misorientation samples offer a high degree of control of excitonic complexes while offering possibilities for studying exciton-phonon coupling, band alignment, and screening.

Abstract: The PHENIX experiment reports systematic measurements at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider of $\phi$-meson production in asymmetric Cu$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$=200 GeV and in U$+$U collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$=193 GeV. Measurements were performed via the $\phi\rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}$ decay channel at midrapidity $|\eta|<0.35$. Features of $\phi$-meson production measured in Cu$+$Cu, Cu$+$Au, Au$+$Au, and U$+$U collisions were found to not depend on the collision geometry, which was expected because the yields are averaged over the azimuthal angle and follow the expected scaling with nuclear-overlap size. The elliptic flow of the $\phi$ meson in Cu$+$Au, Au$+$Au, and U$+$U collisions scales with second-order-participant eccentricity and the length scale of the nuclear-overlap region (estimated with the number of participating nucleons). At moderate $p_T$, $\phi$-meson production measured in Cu$+$Au and U$+$U collisions is consistent with coalescence-model predictions, whereas at high $p_T$ the production is in agreement with expectations for in-medium energy loss of parent partons prior to their fragmentation. The elliptic flow for $\phi$ mesons measured in Cu$+$Au and U$+$U collisions is well described by a (2+1)D viscous-hydrodynamic model with specific-shear viscosity $\eta/s=1/4\pi$., Comment: 412 authors from 76 institutions, 16 pages, 12 figures, 9 tables, 2012 data. v2 is version accepted for publication by Physical Review C. Abstract: The ability to control the direction of scattered light in integrated devices is crucial to provide the flexibility and scalability for a wide range of on-chip applications, such as integrated photonics, quantum information processing and nonlinear optics. In the optical and microwave frequency ranges tunable directionality can be achieved by applying external magnetic fields, that modify optical selection rules, by using nonlinear effects, or interactions with vibrations. However, these approaches are less suitable to control propagation of microwave photons inside integrated superconducting quantum devices, that is highly desirable. Here, we demonstrate tunable directional scattering with just two transmon qubits coupled to a transmission line based on periodically modulated transition frequency. By changing the symmetry of the modulation, governed by the relative phase between the local modulation tones, we achieve directional forward or backward photon scattering.

Abstract: The measurement of the direct-photon spectrum from Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV is presented by the PHENIX collaboration using the external-photon-conversion technique for 0\%--93\% central collisions in a transverse-momentum ($p_T$) range of 0.8--10 GeV/$c$. An excess of direct photons, above prompt-photon production from hard-scattering processes, is observed for $p_T<6$ GeV/$c$. Nonprompt direct photons are measured by subtracting the prompt component, which is estimated as $N_{\rm coll}$-scaled direct photons from $p$$+$$p$ collisions at 200 GeV, from the direct-photon spectrum. Abstract: Recently, the PHENIX Collaboration has published second- and third-harmonic Fourier coefficients $v_2$ and $v_3$ for midrapidity ($|\eta|<0.35$) charged hadrons in 0\%--5\% central $p$$+$Au, $d$$+$Au, and $^3$He$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV utilizing three sets of two-particle correlations for two detector combinations with different pseudorapidity acceptance [Phys. Rev. C {\bf 105}, 024901 (2022)]. This paper extends these measurements of $v_2$ to all centralities in $p$$+$Au, $d$$+$Au, and $^3$He$+$Au collisions, as well as $p$$+$$p$ collisions, as a function of transverse momentum ($p_T$) and event multiplicity. The kinematic dependence of $v_2$ is quantified as the ratio $R$ of $v_2$ between the two detector combinations as a function of event multiplicity for $0.5$$<$$p_T$$<$$1$ and $2$$<$$p_T$$<$$2.5$ GeV/$c$. A multiphase-transport (AMPT) model can reproduce the observed $v_2$ in most-central to midcentral $d$$+$Au and $^3$He$+$Au collisions. However, the AMPT model systematically overestimates the measurements in $p$$+$$p$, $p$$+$Au, and peripheral $d$$+$Au and $^3$He$+$Au collisions, indicating a higher nonflow contribution in AMPT than in the experimental data. The AMPT model fails to describe the observed $R$ for $0.5$$<$$p_T$$<$$1$ GeV/$c$, but there is qualitative agreement with the measurements for $2$$<$$p_T$$<$$2.5$ GeV/$c$., Comment: 393 authors from 72 institutions, 14 pages, 10 figures, 2014, 2015, and 2016 data. v2 is version accepted for publication in Physical Review C. Abstract: Small nuclear collisions are mainly sensitive to cold-nuclear-matter effects; however, the collective behavior observed in these collisions shows a hint of hot-nuclear-matter effects. The identified-particle spectra, especially the $\phi$ mesons which contain strange and antistrange quarks and have a relatively small hadronic-interaction cross section, are a good tool to study these effects. The PHENIX experiment has measured $\phi$ mesons in a specific set of small collision systems $p$$+$Al, $p$$+$Au, and $^3$He$+$Au, as well as $d$$+$Au [Phys. Rev. C {\bf 83}, 024909 (2011)], at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV. The transverse-momentum spectra and nuclear-modification factors are presented and compared to theoretical-model predictions. The comparisons with different calculations suggest that quark-gluon plasma may be formed in these small collision systems at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV. However, the volume and the lifetime of the produced medium may be insufficient for observing strangeness-enhancement and jet-quenching effects. Comparison with calculations suggests that the main production mechanisms of $\phi$ mesons at midrapidity may be different in $p$$+$Al versus $p/d/$$^3$He$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV. While thermal quark recombination seems to dominate in $p/d/$$^3$He$+$Au collisions, fragmentation seems to be the main production mechanism in $p$$+$Al collisions., Comment: 371 authors from 72 institutions, 13 pages, 7 figures, 7 tables, 2014 and 2015 data. v2 is version accepted for publication Physical Review C. Abstract: We present measurements of the cross section and double-helicity asymmetry $A_{LL}$ of direct-photon production in $\vec{p}+\vec{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=510$ GeV. The measurements have been performed at midrapidity ($|\eta|<0.25$) with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. At relativistic energies, direct photons are dominantly produced from the initial quark-gluon hard scattering and do not interact via the strong force at leading order. Therefore, at $\sqrt{s}=510$ GeV, where leading-order-effects dominate, these measurements provide clean and direct access to the gluon helicity in the polarized proton in the gluon-momentum-fraction range $0.02

Abstract: The PHENIX collaboration presents a systematic study of $\pi^0$ production from $p$$+$$p$, $p$$+$Al, $p$$+$Au, $d$$+$Au, and $^{3}$He$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV. Measurements were performed with different centrality selections as well as the total inelastic, 0%--100%, selection for all collision systems. For 0%--100% collisions, the nuclear modification factors, $R_{xA}$, are consistent with unity for $p_T$ above 8 GeV/$c$, but exhibit an enhancement in peripheral collisions and a suppression in central collisions. The enhancement and suppression characteristics are similar for all systems for the same centrality class. It is shown that for high-$p_T$-$\pi^0$ production, the nucleons in the $d$ and $^3$He interact mostly independently with the Au nucleus and that the counter intuitive centrality dependence is likely due to a physical correlation between multiplicity and the presence of a hard scattering process. These observations disfavor models where parton energy loss has a significant contribution to nuclear modifications in small systems. Nuclear modifications at lower $p_T$ resemble the Cronin effect -- an increase followed by a peak in central or inelastic collisions and a plateau in peripheral collisions. The peak height has a characteristic ordering by system size as $p$$+$Au $>$ $d$$+$Au $>$ $^{3}$He$+$Au $>$ $p$$+$Al. For collisions with Au ions, current calculations based on initial state cold nuclear matter effects result in the opposite order, suggesting the presence of other contributions to nuclear modifications, in particular at lower $p_T$., Comment: 554 authors from 81 institutions, 21 pages, 13 figures, and 3 tables. Abstract: There is strong evidence for the formation of small droplets of quark-gluon plasma in $p/d/^{3}$He+Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and in $p$+$p$/Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider. In particular, the analysis of data at RHIC for different geometries obtained by varying the projectile size and shape has proven insightful. In the present analysis, we find excellent agreement with the previously published PHENIX at RHIC results on elliptical and triangular flow with an independent analysis via the two-particle correlation method, which has quite different systematic uncertainties and an independent code base. In addition, the results are extended to other detector combinations with different kinematic (pseudorapidity) coverage. 38. A search for radio pulsars in five nearby supernova remnants

Abstract: Most neutron stars are expected to be born in supernovae, but only about half of supernova remnants (SNRs) are associated with a compact object. In many cases, a supernova progenitor may have resulted in a black hole. However, there are several possible reasons why true pulsar-SNR associations may have been missed in previous surveys: The pulsar's radio beam may not be oriented towards us; the pulsar may be too faint to be detectable; or there may be an offset in the pulsar position caused by a kick. Our goal is to find new pulsars in SNRs and explore their possible association with the remnant. The search and selection of the remnants presented in this paper was inspired by the non-detection of any X-ray bright compact objects in these remnants when previously studied. Five SNRs were searched for radio pulsars with the Green Bank Telescope at 820 MHz with multiple pointings to cover the full spatial extent of the remnants. A periodicity search plus an acceleration search up to 500 m/s^2 and a single pulse search were performed for each pointing in order to detect potential isolated binary pulsars and single pulses, respectively. No new pulsars were detected in the survey. However, we were able to re-detect a known pulsar, PSR J2047+5029, near SNR G89.0+4.7. We were unable to detect the radio-quiet gamma-ray pulsar PSR J2021+4026, but we do find a flux density limit of 0.08 mJy. Our flux density limits make our survey two to 16 times more sensitive than previous surveys, while also covering the whole spatial extent of the same remnants. We discuss potential explanations for the non-detection of a pulsar in the studied SNRs and conclude that sensitivity is still the most likely factor responsible for the lack of pulsars in some remnants., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A on 14/01/2021

The investigation which is a combination of experimental observations and a theoretical analysis of the ultrahigh optical response of semiconductor nanowires, has been carried out with emphasis on Ge nanowires. Semiconductor nanowire photodetectors show a signature of photogating where G_Pc rolls-off with increasing illumination intensity. We show that surface band bending due to depleted surface layers in nanowires induces a strong radial field (~ 108 V/m at the nanowire surface) which causes physical separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. This was established quantitatively through a self-consistent theoretical model based on coupled Schrodinger and Poisson Equations. It shows that carrier separation slows down the surface recombination velocity to a low value (< 1 cm/s) thus reducing the carrier recombination rate and extending the recombination lifetime by few orders of magnitude. An important outcome of the model is the prediction of G_Pc ~ 106 in a single Ge nanowire (with diameter 60 nm), which matches well with our experimental observation. The model also shows an inverse dependence of G_Pc on the diameter that has been observed experimentally. 41. Broad Band Single Germanium Nanowire Photodetectors with Surface Oxide Controlled High Optical Gain

Abstract: We have investigated photoconductive properties of single Germanium Nanowires(NWs)of diameter less than 100 nm in the spectral range of 300 to 1100 nm showing ultra large peak Responsivity in excess of 10^{7}AW^{-1}.The NWs were grown by Vapor Liquid Solid method using Au nanoparticle as catalyst. In this report we discuss the likely origin of the ultra large responsivity that may arise from a combination of various physical effects which are a): Ge and GeO_{x} interface states which act as scavengers of electrons from the photo-generated pairs,leaving the holes free to reach the electrodes,b) Schottky barrier at the metal and NW interface which gets lowered substantially due to carrier diffusion in contact region and (c) photodetector length being small (approximately few {\mu}m), negligible loss of photogenerated carriers due to recombination at defect sites. We have observed from power dependence of the optical gain that the gain is controlled by trap states. We find that the surface of the nanowire has presence of a thin layer of GeO_{x} (as evidenced from HRTEM study) which provide interface states. It is observed that these state play a crucial role to provide a radial field for separation of photogenerated electron and hole pair which in turn leads to very high effective photoconductive gain that reaches a very high at low illumination density., Comment: 32 pages

42. Enhanced broad band photoresponse of a partially suspended horizontal array of Silicon microlines fabricated on Silicon-On-Insulator wafers

Abstract: We report a high Responsivity broad band photo-detector working in the wavelength range 400 nm to 1100 nm in a horizontal array of Si microlines (line width ~1 micron) fabricated on a Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI) wafer. The array was made using a combination of plasma etching, wet etching and electron beam lithography. It forms a partially suspended (nearly free) Silicon microstructure on SOI. The array detector under full illumination of the device shows a peak Responsivity of 18 A/W at 800 nm, at a bias of 1V which is more than an order of magnitude of the Responsivity in a commercial Si detector. In a broad band of 400 nm to 1000 nm the Responsivity of the detector is in excess of 10A/W. We found that the suspension of the microlines in the array is necessary to obtain such high Responsivity. The suspension isolates the microlines from the bulk of the wafer and inhibits carrier recombination by the underlying oxide layer leading to enhanced photo-response. This has been validated through simulation. By using focused illumination of selected parts of a single microline of the array, we could isolate the contributions of the different parts of the microline to the photo-current.

Abstract: The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider measured $\pi^0$ and $\eta$ mesons at midrapidity in U$+$U collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=192$ GeV in a wide transverse momentum range. Measurements were performed in the $\pi^0(\eta)\rightarrow\gamma\gamma$ decay modes. A strong suppression of $\pi^0$ and $\eta$ meson production at high transverse momentum was observed in central U$+$U collisions relative to binary scaled $p$$+$$p$ results. Yields of $\pi^0$ and $\eta$ mesons measured in U$+$U collisions show similar suppression pattern to the ones measured in Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV for similar numbers of participant nucleons. Abstract: The cross section of bottom quark-antiquark ($b\bar{b}$) production in $p$+$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=510$ GeV is measured with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The results are based on the yield of high mass, like-sign muon pairs measured within the PHENIX muon arm acceptance ($1.2<|y|<2.2$). The $b\bar{b}$ signal is extracted from like-sign dimuons by utilizing the unique properties of neutral $B$ meson oscillation. We report a differential cross section of $d\sigma_{b\bar{b}\rightarrow \mu^\pm\mu^\pm}/dy = 0.16 \pm 0.01~(\mbox{stat}) \pm 0.02~(\mbox{syst}) \pm 0.02~(\mbox{global})$ nb for like-sign muons in the rapidity and $p_T$ ranges $1.2<|y|<2.2$ and $p_T>1$ GeV/$c$, and dimuon mass of 5--10 GeV/$c^2$. The extrapolated total cross section at this energy for $b\bar{b}$ production is $13.1 \pm 0.6~(\mbox{stat}) \pm 1.5~(\mbox{syst}) \pm 2.7~(\mbox{global})~\mu$b. The total cross section is compared to a perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculation and is consistent within uncertainties. The azimuthal opening angle between muon pairs from $b\bar{b}$ decays and their $p_T$ distributions are compared to distributions generated using {\sc ps pythia 6}, which includes next-to-leading order processes. The azimuthal correlations and pair $p_T$ distribution are not very well described by {\sc pythia} calculations, but are still consistent within uncertainties. Abstract: We present direct photon-hadron correlations in 200 GeV/A Au$+$Au, $d$$+$Au and $p$$+$$p$ collisions, for direct photon $p_T$ from 5--12 GeV/$c$, collected by the PHENIX Collaboration in the years from 2006 to 2011. We observe no significant modification of jet fragmentation in $d$$+$Au collisions, indicating that cold nuclear matter effects are small or absent. Hadrons carrying a large fraction of the quark's momentum are suppressed in Au$+$Au compared to $p$$+$$p$ and $d$$+$Au. As the momentum fraction decreases, the yield of hadrons in Au$+$Au increases to an excess over the yield in $p$$+$$p$ collisions. The excess is at large angles and at low hadron $p_T$ and is most pronounced for hadrons associated with lower momentum direct photons. Abstract: The PHENIX experiment has measured the spin alignment for inclusive $J/\psi\rightarrow e^{+}e^{-}$ decays in $p$+$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=510$ GeV at midrapidity. The angular distributions have been measured in three different polarization frames, and the three decay angular coefficients have been extracted in a full two-dimensional analysis. Previously, PHENIX saw large longitudinal net polarization at forward rapidity at the same collision energy. This analysis at midrapidity, complementary to the previous PHENIX results, sees no sizable polarization in the measured transverse momentum range of $0.0

47. Temperature-dependent thermal conductivity of a single Germanium nanowire measured by Optothermal Raman Spectroscopy

Abstract: We investigate temperature dependent thermal conductivity k(T) in a single Ge nanowire (NW) using Optothermal Raman Spectroscopy which utilizes the temperature dependence of Raman lines as a local probe for temperature. The experiment was done from 300 K to above 700 K, a temperature range in which thermal conductivity of single NWs has been explored rarely. The thermal conductivity of Ge NWs (grown by vapor liquid solid mechanism), at around room temperature were observed to lie in the range 1.8 to 4.2 W/m.K for diameters between 50 to 110 nm. The thermal conductivity at a given temperature was found to follow a linear dependence on NW diameter, suggesting that the low magnitude of k(T) is determined by diffused scattering of phonons from the surface of NWs that reduces it severely from its bulk value. k(T) shows approximately 1/T behavior which arises from the Umklapp processes. The quantitative estimation of errors arising from the Optothermal measurement and methods to mitigate them has been discussed. We also suggest a quick way to estimate approximately the thermal conductivity of Ge and Si NWs using the above observations.

Abstract: The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider has measured the longitudinal double spin asymmetries, $A_{LL}$, for charged pions at midrapidity ($|\eta|<0.35$) in longitudinally polarized $p$$+$$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=510$ GeV. These measurements are sensitive to the gluon spin contribution to the total spin of the proton in the parton momentum fraction $x$ range between 0.04 and 0.09. One can infer the sign of the gluon polarization from the ordering of pion asymmetries with charge alone. The asymmetries are found to be consistent with global quantum-chromodynamics fits of deep-inelastic scattering and data at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV, which show a nonzero positive contribution of gluon spin to the proton spin., Comment: 360 authors, 8 pages, 6 figures, 1 table, 2013 data. v2 is version accepted for publication in Physical Review D.
