Abstract

The article discusses several paleomagnetic investigations conducted on the Lhasa block and the Tethyan Himalayan sediments in order to determine the timing of the initial India-Eurasia collision. Based on these investigations, the intersection between the paleoaltitude for the pre-collisional southern Eurasian margin (12.7° N) and that of the pre-collisional northern Indian margin (4.7°N), a collision age of 53 to 55 million years was estimated for central and western Tibet.
