이 논문은 21대 총선 직후 실시된 온라인 설문조사 데이터를 활용하여 당파적 양극화가 비정치적 영역에서 어떤 효과를 갖는지 살펴본다. 분석결과는 정당 간 감정적 선호의 차이가 큰 사람일수록 자신과 정당일체감을 공유하는 사람들과의 선별적 관계를 더욱 선호하고 타인이 어떤 정당을 지지하는지에 따라서 그의 도덕적/지적 능력을 판단하는 경향이 있음을 보인다. 뿐만 아니라 이 상관관계는 정치 지식의 증가에 따라서 더욱 강하게 나타난다. 이러한 결과들은 한국에서의 정서적 양극화에 대한 이해를 돕고 정치 지식의 중개적 역할에 대하여 다른 나라에서도 연구해볼 필요성을 시사한다.

Backgroud Volar plate avulsion fractures of the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint are a common hand injury and have been treated conservatively with favorable results. We assumed that conservative treatment of volar plate avulsion fractures of the PIP joint would be unsuccessful if the fracture fragment, even if small, was much displaced or rotated and that delayed excision of the avulsion fractures would result in good outcomes. We report clinical and radiological outcomes of conservative treatment of volar plate avulsion fractures of the PIP joint and risk factors for failure of conservative treatment. Methods We retrospectively reviewed the clinical and radiological outcomes of 88 volar plate avulsion fractures (85 patients) treated conservatively at first. In 18 of these fractures, delayed excision of the fracture fragment was required after an average of 75 days of conservative treatment for limited motion or pain of the joint. We compared parameters between failed cases and successful cases after conservative treatment. Results Compared to the successful cases, the failed cases had a higher prevalence of joint dislocation at the time of injury and greater pain, larger flexion contracture, and less further flexion after conservative treatment. The shape, comminution, and size of the fracture fragments were not related with the need for operation, but the operative cases had greater displacement and rotation of the fracture fragments than the conservative cases. After fragment excision, postoperative protection of the joint was not necessary, pain was reduced, and the mean range of motion increased. Conclusions The presence of joint dislocation and greater displacement and rotation of the fragments may be associated with the failure of conservative treatment of volar plate avulsion fractures. Failed cases after conservative treatment could be resolved by delayed fragment excision with favorable results. Therefore, it might be appropriate to consider conservative treatment at first in almost all volar plate avulsion fractures of stable PIP joints.

This chapter reviews some of the new issues that have become, or will potentially become, salient in South Korean politics: welfare and redistribution, gender, and immigration. While traditional political cleavage based on generational differences in political ideology still persists, these new issues have gained political significance and public attention, creating different political coalitions across South Korean voters. Though they may have not fundamentally changed South Korean politics, they have certainly diversified its issue content. For each of these issues, the chapter discusses their background, how South Koreans think about them, and what implications they have in understanding contemporary South Korean politics.

본 논문은 2016년 국회의원선거 당시 실시된 설문조사 자료를 사용하여, 한국 유권자들 이에서 나타나는 당파적 양극화 — 지지 정당에 대한 호감과 상대 정당에 대한 호감 사이의 이 — 에 어떤 요인이 영향을 끼치는지 실증적으로 분석한다. 분석결과에 따르면 유권자의 당일체감 및 이념성향과 같은 정치적 정체성, 쟁점선호의 일관성과 강도, 그리고 정치적 세련도 등이 한국 유권자의 정서적 양극화에 유의미한 영향을 끼치지만, 각 요인들은 서로 다른 메커니즘을 통해 정서적 양극화에 기여하는 것으로 드러났다. 보다 구체적으로 정치적 정체성의 강도는 지지하는 정당에 대한 호감에만 영향을 끼치는 데 반해서 쟁점선호와 정치적 세련도는 지지하지 않는 정당에 대한 반감에 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 결과적으로 본 연구는 한국 유권자의 당파적 양극화가 가지고 있는 이원적 구조에 대한 분석을 바탕으로 한국 유권자들이 가지고 있는 정당 태도를 이해하기 위한 흥미로운 함의를 제공하고 있다.

Unique among human viruses, Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) encodes several homologs of cellular interferon regulatory factors (vIRFs). Since KSHV expresses multiple factors that can inhibit interferon (IFN) signaling to promote virus production, it is still unclear to what extent vIRFs contribute to these specific processes during KSHV infection. To study the function of vIRFs during viral infection, we engineered 3xFLAG-tagged-vIRF and vIRF-knockout recombinant KSHV clones, which were utilized to test vIRF expression, as well as their requirement for viral replication, virus production, and inhibition of the type I IFN pathway in different models of lytic KSHV infection. Our data show that all vIRFs can be expressed as lytic viral proteins, yet were dispensable for KSHV production and inhibition of type I IFN. Nevertheless, as vIRFs were able to suppress IFN-stimulated antiviral genes, vIRFs may still promote the KSHV lytic cycle in the presence of an ongoing antiviral response.

This paper examines how national identity is associated with South Koreans’ attitudes toward North Korean defectors and their opinions on the relationship between two Koreas. Using a nationally representative survey, we find that individuals high on ethnic identity are more likely to harbor negative attitudes toward migrants from North Korea and less likely to believe that the reunification between two Koreas is necessary. The findings suggest that alleged common belief in “one nation, two countries” notwithstanding, political division has led South Koreans to regard North Korean citizens as an out-group, who are not clearly distinguishable from non-coethnic immigrants.

Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) is a human oncogenic virus, which maintains the persistent infection of the host by intermittently reactivating from latently infected cells to produce viral progenies. While it is established that the replication and transcription activator (RTA) viral transcription factor is required for the induction of lytic viral genes for KSHV lytic reactivation, it is still unknown to what extent RTA alters the host transcriptome to promote KSHV lytic cycle and viral pathogenesis. To address this question, we performed a comprehensive time course transcriptome analysis during KSHV reactivation in B-cell lymphoma cells and determined RTA-binding sites on both the viral and host genomes, which resulted in the identification of the core RTA-induced host genes (core RIGs). We found that the majority of RTA-binding sites at core RIGs contained the canonical RBP-Jκ-binding DNA motif. Subsequently, we demonstrated the vital role of the Notch signaling transcription factor RBP-Jκ for RTA-driven rapid host gene induction, which is consistent with RBP-Jκ being essential for KSHV lytic reactivation. Importantly, many of the core RIGs encode plasma membrane proteins and key regulators of signaling pathways and cell death; however, their contribution to the lytic cycle is largely unknown. We show that the cell cycle and chromatin regulator geminin and the plasma membrane protein gamma-glutamyltransferase 6, two of the core RIGs, are required for efficient KSHV reactivation and virus production. Our results indicate that host genes that RTA rapidly and directly induces can be pivotal for driving the KSHV lytic cycle. IMPORTANCE The lytic cycle of KSHV is involved not only in the dissemination of the virus but also viral oncogenesis, in which the effect of RTA on the host transcriptome is still unclear. Using genomics approaches, we identified a core set of host genes which are rapidly and directly induced by RTA in the early phase of KSHV lytic reactivation. We found that RTA does not need viral cofactors but requires its host cofactor RBP-Jκ for inducing many of its core RIGs. Importantly, we show a critical role for two of the core RIGs in efficient lytic reactivation and replication, highlighting their significance in the KSHV lytic cycle. We propose that the unbiased identification of RTA-induced host genes can uncover potential therapeutic targets for inhibiting KSHV replication and viral pathogenesis.

This paper examines how perceived threats from immigration are associated with individuals’ definition of national identity. Using a nationally representative, face-to-face survey conducted in South Korea, we find that people's reactions to immigration are basically cultural: those who believe immigrants undermine the longstanding cultural unity of South Korea are likely to embrace more exclusive definitions of national in-group, whereas threats regarding the national economy are not necessarily associated with nationalist sentiments. Concerns about public safety due to immigrants also turn out to affect South Koreans’ sense of belonging to the nation. Additional analysis reveals that perceived cultural threats—neither economic nor social concerns—predict lower levels of national pride among South Koreans. The results suggest that increasing levels of racial and ethnic diversity correspond to an ethnocentric response by heightening non-economic concerns. Implications are discussed, referring to the unique socio-cultural context of South Korea.

The transcription factor STAT5 mediates prolactin signaling and controls functional development of mammary tissue during pregnancy. This study has identified the miR-193b locus, also encoding miRNAs 365-1 and 6365, as a STAT5 target in mammary epithelium. While the locus was characterized by active histone marks in mammary tissue, STAT5 binding and expression during pregnancy, it was silent in most non-mammary cells. Inactivation of the miR-193b locus in mice resulted in elevated mammary stem/progenitor cell activity as judged by limiting dilution transplantation experiments of primary mammary epithelial cells. Colonies formed by mutant cells were larger and contained more Ki-67 positive cells. Differentiation of mammary epithelium lacking the miR-193b locus was accelerated during puberty and pregnancy, which coincided with the loss of Cav3 and elevated levels of Elf5. Normal colony development was partially obtained upon ectopically expressing Cav3 or upon siRNA-mediated reduction of Elf5 in miR-193b-null primary mammary epithelial cells. This study reveals a previously unknown link between the mammary-defining transcription factor STAT5 and a microRNA cluster in controlling mammary epithelial differentiation and the activity of mammary stem and progenitor cells.

Data for temperature and humidity which are received by CAN communication module proved the suitability and validity for the embedded platform design as implementing application program employed the native App with Linux Kernel based on the Android OS and application of HTML5.

본 논문은 제18대 대선을 사례로 독립변수의 내인성 및 인과관계의 방향성 문제를 해결하기 위해, 도구변수를 사용한 2단계 프로빗모형을 사용하여 유권자의 투표선택 결정요인을 재검토하였다. 분석 결과, 기존 연구에서 한국 유권자의 전망적 투표의 증거로 제시된 전망적 경제 평가 및 후보자 특성에 대한 인식은 투표선택에 유의한 영향을 끼치지 못했던 것으로 드러났다. 대신 정당에 대한 선호가 투표선택을 결정짓는 가장 중요한 변수였음을 확인하였다. 이와 더불어, 내인성 문제를 통제한 후 이명박 정부 및 야당에 대한 심판론의 영향력이 명확히 나타났다. 요컨대 본 논문의 분석은 제18대 대선에서 한국 유권자들이 매우 당파적인 선택을 했으며, 이명박 정부 및 야당에 대한 회고적 평가역시 당파적인 선택의 중요한 부분을 이루었음을 보여주고 있다.

This paper investigates the relationships among national identity, national pride, and happiness, using a nationally representative survey dataset from South Korea. Two dimensions of national identity—civic and ethnic—are considered, after factor-analyzing eight survey items. The results demonstrate that national pride is positively associated with happiness, but empirical evidence is scarce regarding the relationship between national identity and happiness. Also, we have not found alleged moderating effects of national identity on the relationship between national pride and happiness. Lack of statistically significant effects of national identity is not consistent with the pre-existing findings from cross-national surveys. Given that national identity is deeply rooted in a historically unique context of each nation, this study calls for a more nuanced conceptualization of national identity and culture-specific measures to fully grasp its association with happiness.

The recent domestic research trend with regard to debris flows mainly focused on mapping of landslide hazard and its triggering mechanism. However, as the vulnerability of structure is very important as much as mapping of landslide hazard or its triggering mechanism, this paper is focused on vulnerability assessment of structures impacted by debris flow. The principles of dynamic response of structures to earthquake impact and damage functions proposed in HAZUS-MH were used as the assessment method for estimation of the structural vulnerability, and these methods were verified by applying it to two debris flow cases such as Umyeon-mountain landslide area and Chuncheon landslide area. As the result, it is considered that these methods are suitable for vulnerability assessment of structure impacted debris flows in Korea, but some cases are still limited with regard to practical applications due to the difference of the structure design codes and working behavior between Korea and America.

The frequency in which noise energy is generated, that is, the point where the preceding vowel ends is the cut-off frequency. Thereupon, this study intends to examine the correlations between, cut-off frequencies, cut-off frequencies changed by the following vowel, and cut-off frequencies and nasalance score, of fricatives and affricates with the subjects of children with the cleft palate and normal children. The subjects of this study are total 12 children residing in Seoul and Gyeonggi area. Six are the children diagnosed to have the cleft palate and whose chronological age are more than six, and another six are the normal children who are also more than six and whose chronological age and sex correspond to those of the former. Each subject was presented with nonsyllable environment and sentence environment(50 environment) of fricatives and affricates. Regarding meaningless syllable environment and sentence environment of fricatives and affricates, children with the cleft palate had lower cut-off frequencies than normal children. As a result of comparative study on correlations between cut-off frequencies and nasalance score of children with the cleft palate and normal children, it doesn`t show statistically significant correlations in both meaningless syllable environment and sentence environment of normal children, but it has statistically significant correlations in sentence environment of children with the cleft palate.

Political discussions within interpersonal networks not only help communicate political information that is otherwise too costly to obtain, but they also expose people to political views that are not necessarily congruent to their own predispositions. In exploring consequences of exposure to political disagreements, existing literature finds an interesting dilemma: Although political disagreements contribute to the deliberative democracy by encouraging greater awareness of rationales for opposing views as well as greater political tolerance, they undermine the prospect for participatory democracy by demobilizing people. In response, this article shows that experiences of political disagreements do not necessarily discourage political participation. More specifically, based on the American National Election Study 2000, we find that the demobilizing effect of political disagreements continues to decrease with increasing levels of indifference and alienation between the candidates. Furthermore, among highly alienated individuals, we find that experiences of political disagreements can actually promote their voting turnout.

With the continuous inflow of new immigrants, political participation of Latinos and Asian Americans has become increasingly important for understanding the American electoral politics. A few previous studies examining how political participation of Latinos and Asian Americans is contextually determined reported mixed empirical findings, and this paper re-examines the issue by considering how different features of racial contexts interact to influence the voting turnout of individual Latinos and Asian Americans. Theoretically, we present a model of turnout where a rational individual is motivated to participate, not only by individualistic benefits accrued to him- or herself, but also by perceptions of group-level benefits—concerns regarding the welfare of other members of the racial group. We argue that racial contexts provide distinctive (dis-)incentives to participate, by influencing their perception of participatory benefits at the group level. Empirically, we find that the size of the group exerts a significant effect on turnout decisions of Latino and Asian American individuals, and, particularly for Latinos, its effect interacts with the economic status of the group and the overall racial heterogeneity in the county of residence.

In this paper, Nonlinear Autoregressive (NAR) method based on Least Square-Support Vector Regression (LS-SVR) is introduced and tested for nonlinear sustained vowel modeling. In the database of total 43 sustained vowel of Benign Vocal Fold Lesions having aperiodic waveform, this nonlinear synthesizer near perfectly reproduced chaotic sustained vowels, and also conserved the naturalness of sound such as jitter, compared to Linear Predictive Coding does not keep these naturalness. However, the results of some phonation are quite different from the original sounds. These results are assumed that single-band model can not afford to control and decompose the high frequency components. Therefore multi-band model with wavelet filterbank is adopted for substituting single band model. As a results, multi-band model results in improved stability. Finally, nonlinear sustained vowel modeling using NAR based on LS-SVR can successfully reconstruct synthesized sounds nearly similar to original voiced sounds.

Generating heat and maintaining body temperature is the primary function of brown adipose tissue (BAT). Previous studies have implicated microRNAs, including miR-193b and miR-365-1, in BAT differentiation. We used mouse genetics to further understand the specific contributions of these two miRs. BAT function in mice with an inactivated miR-193b-365-1 locus, as determined by their response to the selective β3 adrenergic receptor agonist CL316.243 and their tolerance to cold exposure, was normal and expression of genes associated with functional BAT, including Prdm16 and Ucp1, was unaffected. In addition, genome-wide expression profiles of miRNAs and mRNAs in BAT in the presence and absence of miR-193b-365-1 were determined. In summary, these data demonstrate, in contrast to earlier work, that the development, differentiation, and function of BAT do not require the presence of miR-193b and miR-365-1.

This chapter discusses Latino public opinion, which was closely monitored since the 1990s through a series of successive large-scale opinion polls, first taking a look at the general form and patterns that help characterize Latino public opinion. It then examines the continuities and changes that occurred between the Latino National Political Survey and the Latino National Survey, in order to provide some insight to understanding the components and evolution of current Latino public opinion. The chapter also discusses transnationalism and the views of Latinos on foreign policies, as well as the effects of Latino public opinion.

Objectives We seek to examine what common characteristics Latino voters share distinctively from nonvoting Latinos and how they differ from those of non-Latino voters. Methods We use the method of classification tree to find what variables best describe the shared characteristics of Latino and non-Latino voters. Results The results indicate that age, the strength of partisanship, and the level of education characterize both Latino and non-Latino voters. However, there is a sharp difference in how age interacts with other the two variables. In the Latino sample, the overwhelming majority of younger people do not turn out to vote, and it is among older Latinos that education and partisanship play an important role in distinguishing voters and nonvoters. By contrast, among non-Latinos, it is younger people whose participation is sensitive to the level of education or strength of partisanship, while the older are overwhelmingly voters regardless of other factors. Conclusions At the individual level, Latinos in the United States still face substantial barriers in political incorporation: in contrast to non-Latinos, they do not seem to develop the habit of voting even after they have aged enough, unless they are helped by higher levels of education or stronger partisanship. At the aggregate level, the pool of Latino likely voters is relatively small, which in turn emphasizes the potential significance of the GOTV campaigns in increasing participation rates among Latinos.

The changes of medical environments such as the growth of a patient with a chronic disease and the elderly, and the advance of the IT technology require highly qualified medical service of new paradigm. For the reason, home health management service has been focused with much expectations and interests. Our proposed home health management system (H2MS) monitors and manages daily physiological status which is easily acquired from multiple-sensor based ubiquitous bio-signal sensor during sleeping, bathing, evacuating, and living at home. H2MS is largely consisted of four functional subsystems: multiple-sensor based ubiquitous bio-signal sensor, home health intermediary client (H2IC), home health center (H2C), and home health service provider (H2SP). Each subsystem carried out their own processes and collaborated on a work with each other. H2MS provides various home health services for the wellness, as well as the elderly, chronic patient's illness, or terminal illness. Also, it is available to suggest various services: an early warning service according to the change of health status, advice service for health improvement, and appointment service for medical treatment. Moreover, this early warning service makes promptly emergency repairs as soon as occurrence of physiologically abnormal symptom. Consequently, early warning reports reduce the frequent intervention of high costed service of medical professionals.

Robust pitch estimation is important in many areas of speech processing. In voice pathology, diverse statistics extracted form pitch estimation were commonly used to test voice quality. In this study, we compared several established pitch detection algorithms (PDAs) for verification of adequacy of the PDAs. In the database of total pathological voices of 99 and normal voices of 30, an analysis of errors related with pitch detection was evaluated between pathological and normal voices, or among the types of pathological voices. Pitch errors of all PDAs used in this study more or less showed some changes between pathological and normal voices. According to the results of pitch errors, gross pitch error showed some increases in cases of pathological voices; especially excessive increase in PDA based on nonlinear time-series. In an analysis of types of pathological voices classified by aperiodicity and the degree of chaos, the more voice has aperiodic and chaotic, the more growth of pitch errors increased. Consequently, it is required to survey the severity of tested voice in order to obtain accurate pitch estimates.

In this paper, survival estimate under ventricular fibrillation, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, administration of drug (epinephrine), measurement of coronary perfusion pressure and ECG signal is investigated. In 360 segments derived from ECG signal and coronary perfusion pressure data of 18 test dogs with experimental cardiac arrest of cardiac cause, several features are inspected for classification of a group of a return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC). Feature vectors, such as spectral moment, median and peak frequency, level-crossing spectrum, average segment amplitude, extracted from the time and frequency domain analysis are initially tested for the use of statistical analysis, and then Support Vector Machine finds the best boundary line discriminating between ROSC and Non-ROSC. Consequently, determination of the experimental period leading the best performance of Support Vector Machine results in a high sensitivity and specificity of ROSC estimate.

Laboratory information System (LIS) is a key tool for management of laboratory data and for improvement of service quality in clinical pathology. But various type, complexity, and large quantity of specimen, occur missing the specimen or report. So we suggest the RFID based LIS system. We developed implementation LIS system has better CQI(Continuous Quality Improvement) using RFID and XML, ADO.net, ASP.net c# 2.0. RFID technology replaces to an existing the bar-code system. Also for more convenience, we used PDA RFID module. The LIS system consists of Main Server, SQL 2005, event display and analysis web page developed using asp.net 2.0 and sharing specimen data information using XML technology.

Body movement is one of the important factors in sleep analysis. This paper is expected to evaluate a person’s sleep condition and analysis of sleep disease much efficiently. Because polysomnography (PSG) method must directly attach a sensor to a body, subjects are going to feel probably inconvenience.

Continuously motivating people to exercise regularly is more important than finding a barriers such as lack of time, cost of equipment or gym membership, lack of nearby facilities and poor weather or night-time lighting. Our proposed system presents practicable methods of motivation through a web-based exercise prescription service. Users are instructed to exercise according to their physical ability by means of an automated individual prescription of exercise checked and approved by a personal trainer or exercise specialist after being tested with the HIMS, fitness assessment system. Furthermore, utilizing BIOFIT exercise prescriptions scheduled by an expert system can help users exercise systematically. Automated individual prescriptions are built in XML based documents because the data needs to be flexible, expansible and convertible structures to process diverse exercise templates. Web-based exercise prescription service makes users stay interested in exercise even if they live in many different environments.

This work presents an alternative return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) estimate using indirectly induced presumption that coronary perfusion pressure (CPP) correlates with the extracted parameter from the ventricular fibrillation (VF) ECG signal. In past studies, it is revealed that successful cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) needs at least 30/spl sim/40mmHg CPP during the aortic diastolic period. In 360 segments derived from 18 test dogs with experimental cardiac arrest of cardiac cause, we analyzed the ability of 4 spectral features of VF before countershock to discriminate or not between segments that correspond to CPP. The median frequency (MF), peak frequency (PF), average segment amplitude (ASA) and maximum segment amplitude (MSA) were studied. After preprocessing the raw data acquired from the specific experimental setup and protocol, we verified CPP is a serious estimate of ROSC, and then we analyzed the extracted parameters corresponding to CPP by multiple regression. In the specific conditional frequency domain (MF: 9.42/spl sim/12.42Hz, PF: 8.71/spl sim/13.08Hz, ASA: > 0.19mV), CPP is correlated to the extracted parameter with 0.71 /spl plusmn/ 0.05 coefficient of multiple determination (R/sup 2/). This paper describes the process and methodology of designing and developing a clinical decision support system for home healthcare system for multi user that classify the patients into proper health level and handle the on-line monitoring, a reaction of the classification result. H2MRC Center is home healthcare system that acquires fundamental patient’s important 8 health parameters and monitors the patient’s information and classifies befitting health level and responses in health level. H2MRC have 8 important key health information, 8 parameters that classified A. the sap of life, B. Respiratory, C. Cardiovascular, D. Endocrines, and So, it needs a fast the classification of health level result, automatic classification, reliability of the result. But many users participate in H2MRC program and 8 parameters each have complicated relations so hard to monitor by a physician. So we design XML based SDSS for home healthcare. It helps fast classified by health level using these acquired 8 parameters, and suggests the proper diagnosis and provides proper medical information that helps patient’s Diagnosis. Also it helps the physician’s effectiveness of on-line decision support using large volumes of data that has complicated relation.
