A seismic simulator based on a 3-degrees-of-freedom (3-DOF) motion base is presented in an immersive augmented reality (AR) environment to provide effective earthquake response training. To mimic an environment similar to that of an actual earthquake, the proposed system provides users with precisely synchronized visual and motion haptic feedback. The motion haptic feedback is designed using a 3-DOF motor-based actuator to generate a momentum similar to an actual earthquake. In addition, scenario-based seismic content was designed for effective visualization in an AR setting to create a more immersive environment that provides a response training program for earthquakes beyond simple experience. We present an interactive virtual-reality (VR) fire extinguisher that provides both realistic viewing using a head-mounted display (HMD) and kinesthetic experiences using a pneumatic muscle and vibrotactile transducer. The VR fire extinguisher is designed to train people to use a fire extinguisher skillfully in real fire situations. We seamlessly integrate three technologies: VR, object motion tracking, and haptic feedback. A fire scene is immersed in the HMD, and a motion tracker is used to replicate a real designed object into the virtual environment to realize augmented reality. In addition, when the handle of the fire extinguisher is squeezed to release the extinguishing agent, the haptic device generates both vibrotactile and air flow tactile feedback signals, providing the same experience as that obtained while using a real fire extinguisher.

This paper proposes a new system for estimating 3D human pose with a ToF sensor. In the proposed system, a single low-cost ToF sensor captures depth data of human pose. Then, a new clean imaging converter for the ToF sensor transforms the depth data corrupted with sensor errors and zero values into a clean 3D image data. Finally, a deep learning predictor based on the convolutional neural networks pre-trained with millions of 2D image data of human pose, not 3D ones, estimates the 3D human pose from the clean 3D image data. Experimental results show that the proposed system shows the good performance comparable to the commercial system in terms of 3D human pose estimation accuracy.
