Birds -- Analysis ,Urbanization -- Analysis ,Biological sciences - Abstract
House Sparrow {Passer domesticus) populations have been negatively affected in various regions of the world because of the urbanization process, although in Brazil the factors involved are still poorly understood. Through standardized sampling, our study aimed to assess the effects of an urbanization gradient on the abundance of House Sparrows in the city of Campo Grande, in central-western Brazil. We recorded House Sparrow and Saffron Finch (Sicalis flaveola) abundance and the percentage of urbanized area (impervious surface) in 61 hexagons of 16 ha each. We surveyed sparrows by using fixed-radius (50 m). 10-min point counts (4 points/hexagon). We recorded 897 House Sparrows and 408 Saffron Finches in all sampled hexagons, with abundance ranging from 0 to 68 House Sparrows'hexagon (-1 individual/ha) and from 0 to 22 Saffron Finches/hexagon (0.42 individual/ha). We found a significant relationship between House Sparrow abundance and the proportion of hexagon impervious surface according to a quadratic equation, as well as more birds in areas that exhibit moderate to high urbanization than in low urbanization. Multilevel Structural Equation Models showed that House Sparrows were negatively (but nonsignificantly) affected by buildings and trees >5 m in height, positively affected by buildings Key words: Saffron Finch. Lack of sufficient knowledge of biological diversity is the first barrier to promoting scientifically‐based conservation policies in Neotropical regions, where high diversity and limited sampling remains a challenge. We compiled fish occurrences data from the whole Upper Paraguay River basin (UPRB) and evaluated the altitudinal variation in species richness, local contribution to beta diversity (LCBD) and composition. We also evaluate the influence of other environmental variables on species richness. Occurrence of a total of 342 native and five exotic fish species were recorded. Fish species richness was higher in lower portions of the basin, with a clear decrease from 400 m.a.s.l. Richness was negatively correlated with altitude, and positively correlated with net primary productivity and slope. The LCBD presented higher values on floodplain and in headwaters. Intermediate classes presented greater relative importance, as they present greater relative richness in a small relative area in the basin. We observed a partial overlap in species composition along altitude classes. Three species classified in some category of threat according to the conservation status of ichthyofauna in Brazil have a limited spatial extent of occurrence, restricted within the Serra da Bodoquena plateau. The obtained results highlight the unique diversity in the floodplain–plateau continuum, therefore, choosing protected areas must consider altitude gradients in the UPRB. Given the small area of the conservation units in the basin, the important role of higher altitude streams in regional fish species diversity and the several threats in the plateau, we conclude that an increase in conservation effort is needed in the plateau portion of the Upper Paraguay River basin. A new species of Melanorivulus is described from the upper Taquari River drainage, upper Paraguay River basin, in the Western Brazilian Cerrado. This species is a member of the Melanorivulus pictus group, endemic to the central Brazilian plateau and adjacent areas. Melanorivulus terena, new species, is endemic to the Paraguay River basin and is possibly closely related to other species endemic to the upper Paraná River basin, such as M. linearis, M. interruptus and M. egens, by the absence of distinctive dark marks on the humeral region in males. The new species is distinguished from all other species of the M. pictus group by a distal margin of unpaired fins and pelvic fin that is orangish red, and by the number of scales in the transversal series. The possible close relationship between the new species and other species recorded in the Paraná River basin may indicate an ancestral interconnection of the headwaters of the Rio Taquari (Paraguay River basin) with the headwaters of the upper Rio Verde and Rio Pardo (Paraná River basin). Trophic interactions have been a long-standing field of interest in ecology, helping to understand the relationships between organisms and how ecosystems function. In this study, we describe the trophic relationships of fish from karst environments in headwater streams of the upper Paraguai River basin. We analyzed the stomach contents of 81 fish species from the Serra da Bodoquena, calculated the metrics associated with the trophic network, incorporating the body size component in the analyses, and evaluated the participation of each species in network/module connectivity. The analyzed community trophic organization was based mainly on autochthonous items which were the most consumed items for about 30% of fish species. The trophic network showed a modular pattern without nestedness or specialization. However, nestedness was significant within each module, demonstrating a hierarchical compound topology (i.e., species with few connections interacted with subsets of the pairs of more connected species within each module). We also found a relationship between network connectivity and fish body size, in which small species tend to connect modules through generalist feeding strategies. Thus, we demonstrated a still little-known role of small species in fish trophic networks, and how trophic segregation occurs in a highly diverse community from Pantanal headwater streams. - Abstract
The Neotropical region hosts 4225 freshwater fish species, ranking first among the world's most diverse regions for freshwater fishes. Our NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set is the first to produce a large-scale Neotropical freshwater fish inventory, covering the entire Neotropical region from Mexico and the Caribbean in the north to the southern limits in Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay. We compiled 185,787 distribution records, with unique georeferenced coordinates, for the 4225 species, represented by occurrence and abundance data. The number of species for the most numerous orders are as follows: Characiformes (1289), Siluriformes (1384), Cichliformes (354), Cyprinodontiformes (245), and Gymnotiformes (135). The most recorded species was the characid Astyanax fasciatus (4696 records). We registered 116,802 distribution records for native species, compared to 1802 distribution records for nonnative species. The main aim of the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set was to make these occurrence and abundance data accessible for international researchers to develop ecological and macroecological studies, from local to regional scales, with focal fish species, families, or orders. We anticipate that the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set will be valuable for studies on a wide range of ecological processes, such as trophic cascades, fishery pressure, the effects of habitat loss and fragmentation, and the impacts of species invasion and climate change. There are no copyright restrictions on the data, and please cite this data paper when using the data in publications.

Data obtained by direct observation of organisms in their natural habitats can provide valuable contributions regarding intra- and inter-specific interactions, as well as spatial distribution and trophic relationships. However, relatively few such data are available for the Neotropical ichthyofauna relative to the great species diversity of this region. We present data on the ichthyofauna in karst environments of the Serra da Bodoquena, Upper Paraguay River basin regarding their categorization into functional trophic groups. We used direct observations that focused on the most frequent feeding tactics and their spatial (vertical and horizontal) distribution in the channel. We observed 83 fish species in 17 functional trophic groups. The greatest species richness was concentrated in the Characidae and Loricariidae in the categories Diurnal Backwater Drift Feeders and Grazers, respectively. Regarding horizontal depth stratification, we found a positive relationship between the association of small fish with the shallow marginal habitats. This work represents a contribution to a region known for its high tourist potential and to the important diversity of the entire ichthyofauna of the Upper Paraguay basin region that requires proper conservation strategies for sustaining these species.

- Abstract
The Serra da Bodoquena includes the headwaters of important rivers of the upper Paraguay River basin and constitutes one of the more extensive karst formations in Brazil. The region is an important tourist destination and Serra da Bodoquena National Park (SBNP) was established in 2000. In this work, we provide a list of the ichthyofauna and describe the main water systems in SBNP. Surveys were carried out in August, September and December 2005 using trawl nets, gill nets and electrofishing. For the list of species, we included records made in subsequent studies, resulting in 60 species belonging to seven orders and 21 families, which are all autochthonous to the upper Paraguay River, except the tilapia Coptodon rendalli, the only non-native species. The species richness was higher in the Salobra River basin (49 species, 39 exclusive) compared to the Perdido River basin (15 species, six exclusive). We documented seven endemic species in the Serra da Bodoquena, of which two are threatened with extinction (Vulnerable category): Trichomycterus dali and Ancistrus formoso. As mitigation and preventive measures for environmental impacts, we suggest regularizing land use and increasing environmental education programs as ways of contributing to public policies that are involved in the conservation of aquatic systems and their biotic communities.

Austrolebias ephemerus can be distinguished from all species belonging to the A. bellottii species group by presenting pectoral fin posterior margin on vertical between base of 5th and 7th anal fin rays in females (vs. between pelvic fin origin and base of 2nd anal fin ray), and by presenting a greater number of gill rakers in the first branchial arch (45+1415 vs. 34+1012; except in A. vandenbergi). It is distinguished from all species of the A. bellottii species group, except A. accorsii and A. queguay, by having a lower head width in males (55.361.1 % SL vs. 61.972.6 % SL) and females (58.462.8 % SL vs. 63.473.2 % SL). Austrolebias ephemerus also differs from all species of the A. bellottii species group, except A. melanoorus and A. queguay, by having fewer neuromasts in the preopercular series (1623 vs. 2429). In addition, the following characters are useful for diagnosing A. ephemerus from the other species of the A. bellottii group: from A. accorsii by having urogenital papilla attached to anal fin (vs. not attached), more scale rows in transversal series (1314 vs. 12), position of dorsal fin origin in relation to the neural spines in males (7th9th vs. 12th13th) and females (9th12h vs. 14th15th), lower number of dorsal fin rays in males (2425 vs. 2628) and females (1820 vs. 2528), lower number of anal fin rays in males (2730 vs. 3234) and females (2328 vs. 3132), and position of anal fin origin in relation to the neural spines in males (6th9th vs. 13th14th). It is distinguished from A. bellottii by presenting basihyal cartilage width of about 75% of basihyal length (vs. 5055%), lower head depth in males (103.3110.0 % SL vs. 110.3 118.1 % SL), and fewer neuromasts in the post-otic series (3 vs. 4). Austrolebias ephemerus can be distinguished from A. melanoorus by presenting a distinct colour pattern in males, consisting of flanks dark bluish gray with vertical rows of bright greenish blue dots (vs. light bluish gray bars alternating with dark gray bars), a single anterior rostral neuromast (vs. 2), and contact organs on anal fin in males (vs. contact organs absent on anal fin), dorsal fin origin between 1st and 4th anal fin ray in males (vs. slightly anterior or on vertical through anal fin origin), medial pelvic fin membranes about 75100% coalesced (vs. 1025 % coalesced), and a higher number of teeth on second pharyngobranchial (58 vs. 34). It is distinguished from A. queguay by presenting vertical rows of bright greenish blue dots in the flanks in males (vs. well-defined light blue bands contrasting with the sides of the body), pectoral fins hyaline, without iridescent blue sub-marginal band (vs. pectoral fin hyaline with iridescent blue sub-marginal band present), one to three rows of scales at anal fin base (vs. scales absent at anal-fin base). The new species can be distinguished from A. univentripinnis by the presence of contact organs on anal fin in males (vs. contact organs absent on anal fin), pectoral fins posterior margin on vertical between base of 6th and 8th anal-fin rays in males (vs. between 3th and 5th anal-fin rays), and fewer neuromasts in the preopercular series (1623 vs. 2426). Finally, Austrolebias ephemerus can be distinguished from A. vandenbergi by having urogenital papilla attached to anal fin (vs. not attached), fewer neuromasts in the infraorbital (23+2126 vs. 3+31), preopercular (1623 vs. 31) and mandibular series (916 vs. 18), fewer scales in longitudinal series (2730 vs. 3133), basihyal cartilage with about 5060% of basihyal length (vs. 75%), and fewer teeth on second pharyngobranchial (58 vs. 1113). Description. Morphometric and meristic data of the holotype and paratypes are presented in Table 1. Males larger than females, largest male examined 31.7 mm SL, largest female 28.1 mm SL. Dorsal profile slightly concave on head, convex from nape to end of dorsal fin base, straight on caudal peduncle. Ventral profile convex from lower jaw to origin of anal fin base, nearly straight on caudal peduncle. Greatest body depth at dorsal fin origin. Body deep and compressed. Snout blunt and jaws short. Dorsal fin rays in males 2425; in females 1820. Tip of dorsal fin rounded. Dorsal fin origin at vertical through 1st and 4th anal-fin rays in males and through 2nd and 5th anal-fin rays in females. Origin of dorsal fin at vertical through neural spines of 7th and 9th vertebrae in males and through neural spines of 9th and 12th vertebrae in females. Anal-fin rays in males 2730; in females 2328. Tip of anal fin rounded in males. Anteromedian rays of anal fin of females lengthened, resulting in nearly triangular anal fin shape. Origin of anal fin at vertical through pleural ribs of 6th and 9th vertebrae in males and in females through pleural ribs of 8th11th vertebrae. Caudal fin rounded, 2224 rays in males and 2225 in females. Pectoral fin elliptical, with 1113 rays in both sexes. Pectoral fin posterior tip reaching vertical through 6th to 8th anal-fin rays in males, and at vertical through 5th to 7th analfin rays in females. Pelvic fin rays 45. Pelvic fin posterior tip reaching 2nd to 4th anal-fin rays in both sexes. Medial pelvic fin membranes about 75100 % coalesced. Urogenital papilla attached 60100% of its length to anal fin in males. Scales cycloid. Body and head entirely scaled, except anterior portion of ventral surface of head. No scales on dorsal fin base. One to three rows of scales on anal-fin base and three rows of scales on caudal-fin base. Supraorbital scales 13. No transverse row of scales anterior to H-scale. Frontal squamation H-patterned; E-scales not overlapping medially. Scales arranged in transverse pattern. Lateral line of trunk complete, with one neuromast per scale. Known only from six small temporary pools on the left bank of the Rio Paraguai basin, between the left bank of the Rio Amonguij and the right bank of the Crrego Progresso, municipality of Porto Murtinho, Mato Grosso do Sul state, Brazil. Etymology. From the Greek ephemeros (ephemeral, short-lived), referring to the short life cycle of the new species and the highly seasonal environment that it inhabits. Habitat (Fig. 6 and 7). Austrolebias ephemerus was recorded in relatively flat and forested areas at altitudes ranging 80 to 100m a.s.l. with arbustive Chacoan vegetation both in open sites and in shaded areas. The pools where the species was recorded had a small area (between 10 m and 400 m ), with low density of macrophytes, depth less than 40 cm, muddy substratum and slightly turbid water. The species was typically the single fish species at its habitat, or, less commonly, coexisting with other annual fish species [i.e., Neofundulus cf. paraguayensis (Myers) and Trigonectes balzanii (Perugia)]. Conservation. Austrolebias ephemerus was recorded in small pools within private properties that are generally used for cattle farming. Since the discovery of the species in 2015, one third of the six pools with occurrence of the species were lost owing to their conversion to pasture areas. The species presents a low population density, occurring in small and isolated pools that, combined, have an area less than 1 hectare and in a region under strong pressure from livestock husbandry. Austrolebias ephemerus presents a reduced (AOO A. ephemerus should be considered a Critically Endangered species under the category CR B2ab (ii, iii), and as such, the species should be included in future lists of the endangered fauna from Brazil., Published as part of Volcan, Matheus Vieira & Severo-Neto, Francisco, 2019, Austrolebias ephemerus (Cyprinodontiformes: Rivulidae), a new annual fish from the upper Rio Paraguai basin, Brazilian Chaco, pp. 541-553 in Zootaxa 4560 (3) on pages 543-545, DOI: 10.11646/zootaxa.4560.3.6, http://zenodo.org/record/2627866, {"references":["IUCN (2011) Standards and Petitions Subcommittee. 2011. The large branchiopod crustacean fauna (fairy shrimp, tadpole shrimp and clam shrimp) of the Neotropical Bioregion are incompletely known, with scattered records for many taxa, and many new taxa discovered and described regularly. As an aid to furthering our knowledge of the group in this region, we present an assortment of notes and records on various Neotropical taxa. We present our information in the form of a checklist, listing all reported species, with a review of their known distribution, with 56 new distributional records for 29 taxa. We also include a revised description of Spiralifrons mira based on new material from Brazil, and provide important comments on the Leptestheriidae, reducing Strakrabiidae, Straskrabia, and Brtekia to synonymy. The information presented here will assist in additional studies, surveys, and conservation, as well as help develop a biogeographical understanding of this vast region. Thus, we have compiled these records so that it will be available to other researchers. Future survey efforts will undoubtedly reveal additional records and taxa. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Astyanax biotae was described from an affluent of the Paranapanema River, in the upper Paraná River basin. During sampling carried out for research projects in the drainage of the Ivinhema and Verde rivers, in the upper Paraná River system, A. biotae individuals were collected in headwaters of small streams and várzea lagoons, both in protected and intensive agriculture areas. The morphometric and meristic data of 20 individuals analyzed were similar to those of the standard series. Vouchers are deposited in the ichthyological collections of UFMS (ZUFMS), UEMS (CPUEMS) and UNESP (DZSJRP). Based on IUCN criteria, we suggest this species be classified as Least Concern (LC) in Mato Grosso do Sul State, considering the absence of effective threats in two of the occurrence areas, which are located within protected areas. However, we emphasize the establishment of measures to protect headwater regions in order to avoid an increase in deforestation, siltation and agricultural pollution, which are recurrent problems in the Cerrado that severely compromise the maintenance of these habitats and their species. It is necessary to invest in studies about natural history of the species and to increase sampling, seeking to reduce the sample gaps that still exist in the Mato Grosso do Sul drainages., Astyanax biotae é uma espécie originalmente descrita em um afluente do Rio Paranapanema, bacia do alto Paraná.

Located in the Pantanal of Miranda-Abobral, the Baía da Medalha is the largest pond close to the Base de Estudos do Pantanal of the Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso do Sul. The Baía da Medalha has been a study site for several didactic and scientific projects for years. Nevertheless, its fish fauna has never been inventoried. Based on data collected from the beginning of the 1990s up to 2011, we provide a list of fish species from the Baía da Medalha. A total of 97 species were recorded, corresponding to about 40% of the species stated for the Pantanal. Characiformes and Siluriformes were the most species-rich orders, being Characidae and Cichlidae the families with the highest number of species. Regional seasonal flood dynamics and the abundance of aquatic macrophytes may be associated with this high diversity. The representative richness found in this lagoon highlights the importance of such taxonomic surveys to preserve the diversity of aquatic habitats within the Pantanal ecosystem.
