Previous studies have identified wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) chromosome substitution lines between `Cheyenne' (CNN) and `Wichita' (WI) that contain quantitative trait loci (QTLs) affecting yield and yield components, anthesis date, plant height, and grain volume weight. However, chromosome substitution lines can only identify additive or epistatic gene action. In this study, hybrids between CNN and WI, and between chromosome substitution lines and their recurrent parents were evaluated in four field environments to determine if the QTLs exhibited additive and dominant gene action which could result in heterosis. As expected, the chromosome substitution lines were significantly different for grain yield from their recurrent parents, which indicated the chromosomes contained additive genes. Three of four chromosome substitution line hybrids were not different from the midparent value, which indicated predominantly additive gene action. However, the fourth substitution line hybrid significantly differed from the midparent value for grain yield, which indicated the chromosome contained genes that were heterotic and had dominant gene action. Some hybrids did not significantly differ from one parent, which further indicated the possibility of dominant gene action. Midparent heterosis also was identified in the cultivar hybrid for grain yield. High parent heterosis was not found for any of the measured traits. Hence, genes on these chromosomes exhibited predominantly additive gene action, but also exhibited dominant gene action which may explain some of the heterosis found in the cultivar hybrid., Previous research on reciprocal chromosome substitution lines between bread wheat cultivars `Wichita' (WI) and `Cheyenne' (CNN) determined that WI has major QTLs on chromosomes 3A and 6A that increased grain [...]

Cultivar comparisons have suggested that the 1BL/1RS wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)-rye (Secale cereale L.) chromosomal translocation enhances agronomic performance and environmental stability of wheat. This advantage has been attributed either to disease resistance genes or to improved adaptation genes on the 1RS segment. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of 1BL/1RS without the confounding effect of cultivar background by evaluating 17 homogeneous 1B, 20 heterogeneous 1B:1BL/1RS, and 22 homogeneous 1BL/1RS lines. The lines were randomly selected from the cross 'Siouxland'/'Ram'. The 59 progeny lines and the two parents were tested in seven Nebraska field environments with a randomized complete-block design. Data were obtained for grain yield, components of yield, grain volume weight, anthesis date, plant height, and leaf rust infection. The 1BL/1RS class was 9% higher yielding than lB and heterogeneous classes. This yield advantage was attributed to increased kernel weight, which was generally expressed in lower yielding environments. Differential response to disease pressure did not explain yield differences. Within chromosome classes, differences in grain yield were attributed more to variation in number of spikes per square meter not kernel weight. The grain yield advantage of the 1BL/1RS appeared to be associated with a postanthesis stress tolerance, which resulted in increased kernel weight of the 1BL/1RS genotypes.

Background GLORIA-AF (Global Registry on Long-Term Oral Antithrombotic Treatment in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation) is a prospective, global registry program describing antithrombotic treatment patterns in patients with newly diagnosed nonvalvular atrial fibrillation at risk of stroke. Phase 2 began when dabigatran, the first non–vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulant (NOAC), became available. Objectives This study sought to describe phase 2 baseline data and compare these with the pre-NOAC era collected during phase 1. Methods During phase 2, 15,641 consenting patients were enrolled (November 2011 to December 2014); 15,092 were eligible. This pre-specified cross-sectional analysis describes eligible patients’ baseline characteristics. Atrial fibrillation disease characteristics, medical outcomes, and concomitant diseases and medications were collected. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results Of the total patients, 45.5% were female; median age was 71 (interquartile range: 64, 78) years. Patients were from Europe (47.1%), North America (22.5%), Asia (20.3%), Latin America (6.0%), and the Middle East/Africa (4.0%). Most had high stroke risk (CHA2DS2-VASc [Congestive heart failure, Hypertension, Age ≥75 years, Diabetes mellitus, previous Stroke, Vascular disease, Age 65 to 74 years, Sex category] score ≥2; 86.1%); 13.9% had moderate risk (CHA2DS2-VASc = 1). Overall, 79.9% received oral anticoagulants, of whom 47.6% received NOAC and 32.3% vitamin K antagonists (VKA); 12.1% received antiplatelet agents; 7.8% received no antithrombotic treatment. For comparison, the proportion of phase 1 patients (of N = 1,063 all eligible) prescribed VKA was 32.8%, acetylsalicylic acid 41.7%, and no therapy 20.2%. In Europe in phase 2, treatment with NOAC was more common than VKA (52.3% and 37.8%, respectively); 6.0% of patients received antiplatelet treatment; and 3.8% received no antithrombotic treatment. In North America, 52.1%, 26.2%, and 14.0% of patients received NOAC, VKA, and antiplatelet drugs, respectively; 7.5% received no antithrombotic treatment. NOAC use was less common in Asia (27.7%), where 27.5% of patients received VKA, 25.0% antiplatelet drugs, and 19.8% no antithrombotic treatment. Conclusions The baseline data from GLORIA-AF phase 2 demonstrate that in newly diagnosed nonvalvular atrial fibrillation patients, NOAC have been highly adopted into practice, becoming more frequently prescribed than VKA in Europe and North America. Worldwide, however, a large proportion of patients remain undertreated, particularly in Asia and North America. - Abstract
In North America, 52.1%, 26.2%, and 14.0% of patients rece

We present the case of a 26-year-old male sportsman by profession, who suffers a radial transstyloid-translunate fracture-dislocation after a trauma during a sport practice. This is an uncommon injury that escapes from the typical injury patterns. After an urgent closed reduction, the patient undergoes surgery by osteosynthesis of the lunate fracture and scapholunate ligament repair, with a successful recovery. Carpal fracture-dislocations are severe injuries that may be associated with multiple patterns of ligamentous and bone injuries. Bain adds the translunate arc (lunate fracture) as a complement to the greater arc-lesser arc classification model of perilunate inestabilities from Johnson. This mechanism of translunate injury does not follow the pattern described by Mayfield, although it is a combination of such concept and the lunate fracture. In our clinical case, there was an involvement of the 3 arches: radial styloid fracture (greater arc), lunate fracture (translunate arc) and carpal ligaments fracture (lesser arc); this has not yet been studied biomechanically.

Previous studies with chromosome substitution lines between hard red winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars Cheyenne (CNN} and Wichita (WI) identified genes on chromosome 3A of WI which affect grain yield, yield components, grain volume weight, plant height, and anthesis date. This study was conducted to determine if the trait variation caused by chromosome 3A could be explained by major or minor gene segregation and if these genes are pleiotropic, linked, or independent on the chromosome. A population of recombinant inbred chromosome lines for chromosome 3A (RICLs-3A), developed between CNN and a chromosome substitution line CNN(WI3A), was evaluated in multi-location field trials in 3 yr. Our results indicate significant differences (P [is less than or equal to] 0.05) between parental lines and among RICLs for grain yield, 1000-kernel weight, plant height, and anthesis date, but not for kernel number per spike, spike number per square meter, and grain volume weight. A 1:1 genetic ratio for anthesis date suggested the presence of a single segregating locus controlling the trait. None of the other agronomic traits could be separated into unequivocal groups and hence, major genes were not detected. This indicates that the traits were controlled either by several genes or few genes with enough environmental influence, or both, to obscure their effects. Significant correlations and possible crossover products between anthesis date, plant height, and 1000-kernel weight suggest that these traits were controlled either by linked gene(s} or by pleiotropic genes with additional genes affecting one of the traits., PREVIOUS RESEARCH with reciprocal chromosome substitution lines between bread wheat cultivars Cheyenne (CNN) and Wichita (WI) determined that WI chromosome 3A contained gene(s) that significantly increased grain yield and 1000-kernel [...]

Recent epidemics of fusarium head blight (FHB), caused by Fusarium graminearum Schwabe (telomorph: Gibberella zeae), in the USA and Canada have caused severe yield and quality losses in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Development of resistant cultivars has been difficult because of the complex inheritance of resistance and confounding environmental effects. This study was conducted to identify and map DNA markers linked to genes associated with FHB resistance. A population of 112 [F.sub.5]-derived recombinant inbred (RI) wheat lines from the cross `Sumai 3' (resistant)/`Stoa' (moderately susceptible) was evaluated in two greenhouse experiments for Type II resistance (spread within the spike). On the basis of restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) marker analyses, five genomic regions were significantly (P [is less than] 0.01) associated with FHB resistance, three derived from Sumai 3 and two from Stoa. Regions on Chromosomes 3BS (from Sumai 3) and 2AL (from Stoa) were identified by interval analysis using a LOD threshold of 3.0. These two quantitative trait loci (QTL) have been assigned the gene designations QFhs.ndsu-3B and QFhs. ndsu-2A, respectively. Recombinant inbred lines with these two QTL had a median severity of 20.9%, compared with 36.2% for all RI lines. The best RFLP marker in the 3BS region explained 15.4% of the variation and a multiple regression model consisting of three QTL explained 29.5% of the variation. These results indicate that resistance to FHB is inherited in a quantitative manner and that marker-assisted selection may aid the development of FHB-resistant cultivars., Fusarium head blight, caused by Fusarium graminearum is an important disease in the hard red spring wheat producing areas of the USA and Canada (Wilcoxson et al., 1992). Epidemics of [...]

Chromosomal translocations between wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and rye (Secale cereale L.) have been associated with an increase in grain yield and a decrease in end-use quality in hard red winter wheat. Although demonstrated with a 1BL.1RS translocation, less information is available regarding the effect of 1AL.1RS translocations. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of a 1AL.1RS translocation in hard red winter wheat on end-use quality traits and their stability across environments. From the heterogeneous 1AL.1RS wheat cultivar Nekota, 18 homogeneous 1A lines (non-1RS), 16 1AL.1RS lines, four composites (1A, 1AL.1RS, 1AL.1RS+ 1A, and Nekota), and six cultivars were tested in eight Nebraska environments. The 1AL.1RS translocation increased flour protein content (5.5 mg [g.sup.-1]), but decreased flour yield (14.2 g [kg.sup.-1]), Mixograph mixing time (from 2.9-2.7 min), and Mixograph mixing tolerance rating (from 3.5-3.1). Despite higher flour protein content in 1AL.1RS lines, the 1AL.1RS translocation did not enhance other end use quality traits. On the basis of linear regression, the 1A and 1AL.1RS lines had similar stability values for flour yield and flour protein content. The 1A lines showed higher flour yield in all environments, while the 1AL.1RS lines had higher flour protein content in all environments. For Mixograph mixing time and mixing tolerance, the 1A lines were more responsive to the environment, while the 1AL.1RS lines had exceptional stability over all environments. The end-use quality of Nekota can be explained by a mixture of 1A lines with acceptable to good quality and 1AL.1RS lines with poor to acceptable quality., The 1AL.1RS translocation originally found in `Amigo' has been widely used (Sebesta and Wood 1978; Sebesta et al., 1995; Friebe et al., 1996) and is in many wheat cultivars, such [...]

The presence of the short arm of rye (Secale cereale L.) chromosome one (1RS) has been associated with an increase in grain yield in hard red winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). This positive effect has been demonstrated when the 1RS arm is present in the 1BL.1RS translocation. However, little information is available regarding the 1AL.1RS transiocation. Our objective was to determine the effect of the 1AL.1RS translocation on yield and yield components and their stability across environments. Eighteen homogeneous 1A lines (non1RS) and 161AL.1RS lines were randomly derived from the heterogeneous cultivar Nekota. These 34 lines, four composites (IA, 1AL.1RS, 1AL.1RS + 1A, and Nekota), along with six check cultivars were grown in eight Nebraska environments. The 1AL.1RS transiocation in the Nekota background increased kernel weight (3.3%) and grain volume weight (0.4%); had no effect on grain yield, kernels per spike, and anthesis date; and decreased plant height (1.2%) and number of spikes per square meter (2.9%). The 1A lines and 1AL.1RS lines were equally stable for grain yield, kernels per spike, spikes per square meter, and plant height. For kernel weight, the 1A lines were more responsive and tended to have heavier kernels under favorable environments, while the 1AL.1RS lines had heavier kernels under lower yielding environments. For grain volume weight, the 1A lines were more responsive than the 1AL.1RS lines, which had heavier grain volume weight under lower yielding environments. Hence, the 1AL.1RS translocation in Nekota was not beneficial for either agronomic performance or stability., Translocations between wheat and rye have been successfully used to enhance genetic variability in wheat breeding programs. The translocation of the short arm of rye chromosome one (1RS) to the [...]

This study described the reproductive system and gonadal development of Octopus rubescens from Bahía de Todos Santos, Baja California, Mexico. A total of 65 organisms, 35 males weighing 7.2 to 543.4 g and 30 females from 9.4 to 87.7 g where analyzed. The gonad development was defined through histological methods using Hematoxylin-eosin and Arteta- trichrome stains. We describe macroscopically the reproductive system of males and females, and characterized each of the anatomic components. Eight stages of maturity were recognized in females: 1. Immature, 2. Initial folliculogenesis, 3. Final folliculogenesis, 4. Previtelogenesis, 5. Early vitelogenesis, 6. Final vitelogenesis, 7. Maturing and 8. Spawn. In males five stages were identified: 1. Immature, 2. Maturing A, 3. Maturing B, 4. Mature type 1 and 5. Mature type 2. This work is the first histological description of the reproductive system of this species and the beginning for future research on its basic biology.

This text aims to reveal how natives of Mexico learned the techniques to built masonry spanning structures such as arches and vaults. The guideline of this study starts by observing illustrations of the Florentine Codex, later it reflects on pre-Columbian masons skills by looking at the building solutions in the site of Mitla, and finally takes on the unique experience of reconstructing the ribbed vault of the open chapel of Teposcolula as case study. The weaving of these three components unveils those methods of teaching building techniques during the 16th century were done by example and practical knowledge.

- Abstract
Despite its relevance, the microscopic origin of the energy barrier, B, between the compressed and elongated geometries of Jahn–Teller (JT) systems is not well understood yet because of a lack of quantitative data about its various contributions. Seeking to clear up this matter, we have carried out both periodic and cluster ab initio calculations on the model system NaCl:Ni+. This system is particularly puzzling because, according to experimental data, its barrier is much smaller than that for other d9 and d7 ions in similar lattices. All calculations performed on the model system lead, in fact, to values |B| ≤ 160 cm–1, which are certainly smaller than B = 500 cm–1 derived for NaCl:M2+ (M = Ag, Rh) or B = 1024 cm–1 obtained for KCl:Ag2+. As a salient feature, analysis of calculations carried out as a function of the Qθ (3z2 – r2) coordinate unveils the microscopic origin of the barrier. It is quantitatively proven that the elongated geometry observed for NaCl:Ni+ is due to the 3d–4s vibronic admixture, which is slightly larger than the anharmonicity in the eg JT mode that favors a compressed geometry. The existence of these two competing mechanisms explains the low value of B for the model system, contrary to cases where the complex formed by d9 or d7 ions is elastically decoupled from the host lattice. Although the magnitude of B for NaCl:Ni+ is particularly small, the tunneling splitting, 3Γ, is estimated to be below 9 cm–1, thus explaining why the coherence is easily destroyed by random strains and thus a static JT effect is observed experimentally. As a main conclusion, the barrier in JT systems cannot be understood neglecting the tiny changes of the electronic density involved in small distorti
