Distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) technology is an emerging field of seismic sensing that enables recording ambient noise seismic data along the entire length of a fiber-optic cable at meter-scale resolution. Such a dense spatial resolution of recordings over long distances has not been possible using traditional methods because of limited hardware resources and logistical concerns in an urban environment. The low spatial resolution of traditional passive seismic acquisition techniques has limited the accuracy of the previously generated velocity profiles in many important urban regions, including the Reno-area basin, to the top 100 m of the underlying subsurface. Applying the method of seismic interferometry to ambient noise strain rate data obtained from a dark-fiber cable allows for generating noise cross correlations, which can be used to infer shallow and deep subsurface properties and basin geometry. We gathered DAS ambient noise seismic data for this study using a 12 km portion of a dark-fiber line in Reno, Nevada. We used gathered data to generate and invert dispersion curves to estimate the near-surface shear-wave velocity structure. Comparing the generated velocity profiles with previous regional studies shows good agreement in determining the average depth to bedrock and velocity variations in the analyzed domain. A synthetic experiment is also performed to verify the proposed framework further and better understand the effect of the infrastructural cover along the cable. The results obtained from this research provide insight into the application of DAS using dark-fiber lines in subsurface characterization in urban environments. The technique referred as ray approximation treats wave propagation in a heterogeneous medium at the infinitely small wavelength limit. This classic simplification allows useful approximate analytical results to be obtained in cases where complete description of the waveform behaviour is virtually unattainable, hence its wide use in physics. In seismology, this approximation has been widely applied. This paper presents an application in one-dimensional site response (1DSR) analysis: it is used herein, first to explain and elucidate the generality of some previous observations as to the use of the harmonic mean of a shear-wave velocity profile to represent the global behaviour of a site; and second to partially settle an open question in 1DSR, namely 'What are the equivalent homogeneous properties that yield the same response, in terms of natural frequencies and resonance amplitude, for a given inhomogeneous site?', providing a few assumptions are met – chiefly, that excitations of sufficiently high frequency are considered. In recent years, researchers have shown interest in blocking low-frequency vibrations with the aid of metamaterials due to their inherent wave-filtering properties. However, proposing a practical metamaterial layout remains a challenge, taking into consideration the size, shape, and availability of metamaterial components. This study proposes a new configuration that can increase the range of the attenuation frequency. The configuration focuses on the capability of graded metamaterials in filtering a wide range of wave frequencies that can be generated by low-amplitude waves. To find the best configuration with the widest bandgap, square periodic sections using different materials including steel, rubber, concrete, tungsten, and carbon fiber-reinforced polymer were considered. Unit cells with two layers of materials were examined numerically to determine the attenuation zones and the effect of material properties and core size on the bandgap width and frequency range. Furthermore, the performance of the unit cells in a soil medium under the low-amplitude low-frequency surface and bulk waves is evaluated in the frequency domain using finite element analysis, in which the metamaterial is embedded periodically in a soil medium with different configurations, including a graded distribution. The results show that having an array of unit cells spaced periodically can decrease the transmission of the wave to the protected zone located after the array, and the application of grading can increase the attenuation zones to filter frequencies as low as 4.5 Hz and up to 29 Hz. In the fields of structural and geotechnical engineering, improving the understanding of soil–structure interaction (SSI) effects is critical for earthquake-resistant design. Engineers and practitioners often resort to finite element (FE) software to advance this objective. Unfortunately, the availability of software equipped with boundary representation for absorbing scattered waves and ensuring consistent input ground motion prescriptions, which is necessary for accurately representing SSI effects, is currently limited. To address such limitations, the authors developed Seismo-VLAB (SVL v1.0-stable) an open-source software designed to perform SSI simulations. The methodology considers the integration of advanced techniques, including the domain decomposition method (DDM), perfectly matched layers (PMLs), and domain reduction method (DRM), in addition to parallel computing capabilities to accelerate the solution of large-scale problems. In this work, the authors provide a detailed description of the implementation for addressing SSI modeling, validate some of the SVL's features needed for such purpose, and demonstrate that the coupled DRM–PML technique is a necessary condition for accurately solving SSI problems. It is expected that SVL provides a significant contribution to the SSI research community, offering a self-contained and versatile alternative. The software's practical application in analyzing SSI and directionality effects on 3D structures under seismic loading demonstrates its capability to model real-world earthquake responses in structural engineering. We present deterministic ground motion simulations that account for the cyclic multiaxial response of sediments in the shallow crust. We use the Garner Valley in Southern California as a test case. The multiaxial constitutive model is based on the bounding surface plasticity theory in terms of total stress and is implemented in a high‐performance computing finite‐element parallel code. A major advantage of this model is the small number of free parameters that need to be calibrated given a shear modulus reduction curve and the ultimate soil strength. This, in turn, makes the model suitable for regional‐scale simulations, where geotechnical data in the shallow crust are scarce. In this paper, we first describe a series of numerical experiments designed to verify the model implementation. This is followed by a series of idealized large‐scale simulations in a 35 × 26 × 4.5 km3 domain that encompasses the Garner Valley downhole array site, which is an instrumented and well‐characterized site in Southern California. Material properties were extracted from the Southern California Earthquake Center Community velocity model, CVM‐S4.26, considering its optional geotechnical layer, while the modulus reduction curves and soil strength were selected empirically to constrain the nonlinear soil model parameters. Our nonlinear simulations suggest that peak ground displacements within the valley increase relative to the linear case, while peak ground accelerations can increase or decrease, depending on the frequency content of the excitation. The comparisons of our simulations against hybrid three‐dimensional–one‐dimensional site response analyses suggest the inadequacy of the latter to capture the complexity of fully three‐dimensional simulations.
