Abstract

In the recent past, a comprehensive experimental program has been worked out at the Mainz Energy-Recovery Superconducting Accelerator, MESA, at the Institute of Nuclear Physics in Mainz. MESA is a high-intensity, low-energy electron accelerator presently under construction and will thereby provide great opportunities to perform a new generation of high-precision scattering experiments. The versatile MAGIX experiment will use MESA’s innovative energy recovery technique, with a science focus on the study of hadron structure and few-body systems, dark sector searches, and investigations into reactions pertinent to nuclear astrophysics. An external beam line will supply spin-polarized electrons to the P2 experiment, enabling the performance of sensitive tests of the Standard Model through parity-violating electron scattering. The DarkMESA beam dump experiment, situated behind P2, is dedicated to the search for light dark matter particles.

Abstract

A high-precision hypernuclear experiment has been commissioned at the Mainz Microtron (MAMI) to determine the hypertriton Λ binding energy via decay-pion spectroscopy. The method has been successfully pioneered with 4ΛH studies in the last decade. The experiment makes use of a novel high luminosity lithium target with a length of 45mm while being only 0.75mm thick to keep momentum smearing of the decay pions low. The target-to-beam alignment as well as the observation of the deposited heat is achieved with a newly developed thermal imaging system. Together with a precise beam energy determination via the undulator light interference method a recalibration of the magnetic spectrometers will be done to obtain a statistical and systematic error of about 20 keV. The experiment started in the summer of 2022 and initial optimization studies for luminosity and data quality are presented.

Abstract

The recently completed PREX-2 campaign - which measured the weak form factor of lead at an optimal momentum transfer - has confirmed that the neutron skin of lead is relatively large and has provided a precise determination of the interior baryon density of a heavy nucleus. In turn, the measured form factor can be related to various nuclear and neutron-star properties. Astrophysical observations by the NICER mission have benefited from improvements in flux, energy resolution, and notably, timing resolution. NICER has the capability to measure pulse profile data, which enables simultaneous mass-radius determinations. During the next decade, measurements in astrophysics, gravitational wave astronomy, and nuclear physics are expected to provide a wealth of more precise data. Abstract

On March 25th 2019, the Belle II detector recorded the first collisions delivered by the SuperKEKB accelerator. This marked the beginning of the physics run with vertex detector. The vertex detector was aligned initially with cosmic ray tracks without magnetic field simultaneously with the drift chamber. The alignment method is based on Millepede II and the General Broken Lines track model and includes also the muon system or primary vertex position alignment. To control weak modes, we employ sensitive validation tools and various track samples can be used as alignment input, from straight cosmic tracks to mass-constrained decays. With increasing luminosity and experience, the alignment is approaching the target performance, crucial for the first physics analyses in the era of Super-BFactories. We will present the software framework for the detector calibration and alignment, the results from the first physics run and the prospects in view of the experience with the first data.

Abstract

The Belle II experiment features a substantial upgrade of the Belle detector and will operate at the SuperKEKB energy-asymmetric e+e− collider at KEK in Tsukuba, Japan. The accelerator completed its first phase of commissioning in 2016, and the Belle II detector saw its first electron-positron collisions in April 2018. Belle II features a newly designed silicon vertex detector based on double-sided strip layers and DEPFET pixel layers. A subset of the vertex detector was operated in 2018 to determine background conditions (Phase 2 operation). The collaboration completed full detector installation in January 2019, and the experiment started full data taking. This paper will report on the final arrangement of the silicon vertex detector part of Belle II with a focus on online monitoring of detector conditions and data quality, on the design and use of diagnostic and reference plots, and on integration with the software framework of Belle II. Data quality monitoring plots will be discussed with a focus on simulation and acquired cosmic and collision data.

Abstract

We present measurements of the electron helicity asymmetry in quasi-elastic proton knockout from $^{2}$H and $^{12}$C nuclei by polarized electrons. This asymmetry depends on the fifth structure function, is antisymmetric with respect to the scattering plane, and vanishes in the absence of final-state interactions, and thus it provides a sensitive tool for their study. Our kinematics cover the full range in off-coplanarity angle $\phi_{pq}$, with a polar angle $\theta_{pq}$ coverage up to about 8 degrees. The missing energy resolution enabled us to determine the asymmetries for knock-out resulting in different states of the residual $^{11}$B system. We find that the helicity asymmetry for $p$-shell knockout from $^{12}$C depends on the final state of the residual system and is relatively large (up to $\approx 0.16$), especially at low missing momentum. It is considerably smaller (up to $\approx 0.01$) for $s$-shell knockout from both $^{12}$C and $^2$H. The data for $^2$H are in very good agreement with theoretical calculations, while the predictions for $^{12}$C exhibit differences with respect to the data.

Abstract

At the Mainz Microtron hypernuclei can be studied by (e,e’K) reactions. By detecting the kaon which is emitted in forward direction, with the KAOS spectrometer placed at 0° scattering angle, reactions involving open strangeness production are tagged. High-resolution magnetic spectrometers are then used to coincidentally detect the monoenergetic decay-pions from mesonic two-body weak decays of light hypernuclei at rest. As a pioneering experiment has confirmed, the KAOS spectrometer is exposed to a large flux of background particles, mostly positrons from bremsstrahlung pair production. In order to increase the effciency of kaon identification the KAOS spectrometer was modified to suppress background particles at the cost of a high momentum resolution, which is less important for this experiment. This was achieved by placing up to 14 cm of lead absorbers in front of the detectors, in which positrons are blocked by forming electromagnetic showers while the effect on kaons is limited. An additional time-of-flight wall and a new threshold Čerenkov detector help to increase the detection effciency of kaons.

Abstract

We report measurements of the induced polarization $\vec P$ of protons knocked out from $^2$H and $^{12}$C via the $A(e,e'\vec p\,)$ reaction. We have studied the dependence of $\vec P$ on two kinematic variables: the missing momentum $p_{\rm miss}$ and the "off-coplanarity" angle $\phi_{pq}$ between the scattering and reaction planes. For the full 360$\degree$ range in $\phi_{pq}$, both the normal ($P_y$) and, for the first time, the transverse ($P_x$) components of the induced polarization were measured with respect to the coordinate system associated with the scattering plane. $P_x$ vanishes in coplanar kinematics, however in non-coplanar kinematics, it is on the same scale as $P_y$. We find that the dependence on $\phi_{pq}$ is sine-like for $P_x$ and cosine-like for $P_y$. For carbon, the magnitude of the induced polarization is especially large when protons are knocked out from the $p_{3/2}$ shell at very small $p_{\rm miss}$. For the deuteron, the induced polarization is near zero at small $|p_{\rm miss}|$, and its magnitude increases with $|p_{\rm miss}|$. For both nuclei such behavior is reproduced qualitatively by theoretical results, driven largely by the spin-orbit part of the final-state interactions. However, for both nuclei, sizeable discrepancies exist between experiment and theory.

Abstract

We report the measurements of the transverse ($P'x$) and longitudinal ($P'z$) components of the polarization transfer to a bound proton in carbon via the quasi-free $^{12}{\rm C}(\vec e,e'\vec p)$ reaction, over a wide range of missing momenta. We determine these polarization-transfers separately for protons knocked out from the $s$- and $p$-shells. The electron-beam polarization was measured to determine the individual components with systematic uncertainties which allow a detailed comparison with theoretical calculations.

Abstract

We report on a comprehensive reinterpretation of the existing cross-section data for elastic electron-proton scattering obtained by the initial-state radiation technique, resulting in a significantly improved accuracy of the extracted proton charge radius. By refining the external energy corrections we have achieved an outstanding description of the radiative tail, essential for a detailed investigation of the proton finite-size effects on the measured cross-sections. This development, together with a novel framework for determining the radius, based on a regression analysis of the cross-sections employing a polynomial model for the form factor, led us to a new value for the charge radius, which is $(0.870 \pm 0.014_\mathrm{stat.}\pm 0.024_\mathrm{sys.} \pm 0.003_\mathrm{mod.})\,\mathrm{fm}$.

Abstract

We present measurements of the polarization-transfer components in the $^2$H$(\vec e,e'\vec p)$ reaction, covering a previously unexplored kinematic region with large positive (anti-parallel) missing momentum, $p_{\rm miss}$, up to 220 MeV$/c$, and $Q^2=0.65$ $({\rm GeV}/c)^2$. These measurements, performed at the Mainz Microtron (MAMI), were motivated by theoretical calculations which predict small final-state interaction (FSI) effects in these kinematics, making them favorable for searching for medium modifications of bound nucleons in nuclei. We find in this kinematic region that the measured polarization-transfer components $P_x$ and $P_z$ and their ratio agree with the theoretical calculations, which use free-proton form factors. Using this, we establish upper limits on possible medium effects that modify the bound proton's form factor ratio $G_E/G_M$ at the level of a few percent. We also compare the measured polarization-transfer components and their ratio for $^2$H to those of a free (moving) proton. We find that the universal behavior of $^2$H, $^4$He and $^{12}$C in the double ratio $\frac{(P_x/P_z)^A}{(P_x/P_z)^{^1\rm H}}$ is maintained in the positive missing-momentum region.

Abstract

This article describes the future P2 parity-violating electron scattering facility at the upcoming MESA accelerator in Mainz. The physics program of the facility comprises indirect, high precision search for physics beyond the Standard Model, measurement of the neutron distribution in nuclear physics, single-spin asymmetries stemming from two-photon exchange and a possible future extension to the measurement of hadronic parity violation. The first measurement of the P2 experiment aims for a high precision determination of the weak mixing angle to a precision of 0.14% at a four-momentum transfer of Q^2 = 4.5 10^{-3} GeV^2. The accuracy is comparable to existing measurements at the Z pole. It comprises a sensitive test of the standard model up to a mass scale of 50 TeV, extendable to 70 TeV. This requires a measurement of the parity violating cross section asymmetry -39.94 10^{-9} in the elastic electron-proton scattering with a total accuracy of 0.56 10^-9 (1.4 %) in 10,000 h of 150 \micro A polarized electron beam impinging on a 60 cm liquid H_2 target allowing for an extraction of the weak charge of the proton which is directly connected to the weak mixing angle. Contributions from gamma Z-box graphs become small at the small beam energy of 155 MeV. The size of the asymmetry is the smallest asymmetry ever measured in electron scattering with an unprecedented goal for the accuracy. We report here on the conceptual design of the P2 spectrometer, its Cherenkov detectors, the integrating read-out electronics as well as the ultra-thin, fast tracking detectors. 14. Neutron Skins: Weak Elastic Scattering and Neutron Stars.

Abstract

The recently completed PREX-2 campaign measured the density distribution of neutrons in the lead nucleus as a function of momentum transfer (the form factor), confirmed a relatively large extent of the neutrons beyond the protons in the nucleus (the neutron skin), and provided a precise determination of the density of protons and neutrons at the center of a heavy nucleus. In turn, the measured form factor can be related to various nuclear and neutron star properties. The NICER X-ray telescope has inferred the masses and radii of some X-ray pulsars (neutron stars), although complications arise when determining these quantities independently. Further improvements in NICER have enabled simultaneous mass–radius determinations that had not previously been possible. During the next decade, measurements in astrophysics, gravitational-wave astronomy, and nuclear physics are expected to provide a wealth of more precise data. Abstract

The Belle II experiment at the super KEK B-factory (SuperKEKB) in Tsukuba, Japan, has been collecting $e^+e^−$ collision data since March 2019. Operating at a record-breaking luminosity of up to $4.7×10^{34} cm^{−2}s^{−1}$, data corresponding to $424 fb^{−1}$ has since been recorded. The Belle II VerteX Detector (VXD) is central to the Belle II detector and its physics program and plays a crucial role in reconstructing precise primary and decay vertices. It consists of the outer 4-layer Silicon Vertex Detector (SVD) using double sided silicon strips and the inner two-layer PiXel Detector (PXD) based on the Depleted P-channel Field Effect Transistor (DePFET) technology. The PXD DePFET structure combines signal generation and amplification within pixels with a minimum pitch of $(50×55) μm^2$. A high gain and a high signal-to-noise ratio allow thinning the pixels to $75 μm$ while retaining a high pixel hit efficiency of about $99%$. As a consequence, also the material budget of the full detector is kept low at $≈0.21%$$\frac{X}{X_0}$ per layer in the acceptance region. This also includes contributions from the control, Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC), and data processing Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) as well as from cooling and support structures. This article will present the experience gained from four years of operating PXD; the first full scale detector employing the DePFET technology in High Energy Physics. Overall, the PXD has met the expectations. Operating in the intense SuperKEKB environment poses many challenges that will also be discussed. The current PXD system remains incomplete with only 20 out of 40 modules having been installed. A full replacement has been constructed and is currently in its final testing stage before it will be installed into Belle II during the ongoing long shutdown that will last throughout 2023.

Abstract

We present a detailed simulation study of the signatures from the sequential decays of the triple-strange pbar p -> {\Omega}+{\Omega}- -> K+{\Lambda}barK- {\Lambda} -> K+pbar{\pi}+K-p{\pi}- process in the PANDA central tracking system with focus on hit patterns and precise time measurement. We present a systematic approach for studying physics channels at the detector level and develop input criteria for tracking algorithms and trigger lines. Finally, we study the beam momentum dependence on the reconstruction efficiency for the PANDA detector.

Abstract

We present measurements of the electron helicity asymmetry in quasi-elastic proton knockout from $^{2}$H and $^{12}$C nuclei by polarized electrons. This asymmetry depends on the fifth structure function, is antisymmetric with respect to the scattering plane, and vanishes in the absence of final-state interactions, and thus it provides a sensitive tool for their study. Our kinematics cover the full range in off-coplanarity angle $\phi_{pq}$, with a polar angle $\theta_{pq}$ coverage up to about 8 degrees. The missing energy resolution enabled us to determine the asymmetries for knock-out resulting in different states of the residual $^{11}$B system. We find that the helicity asymmetry for $p$-shell knockout from $^{12}$C depends on the final state of the residual system and is relatively large (up to $\approx 0.16$), especially at low missing momentum. It is considerably smaller (up to $\approx 0.01$) for $s$-shell knockout from both $^{12}$C and $^2$H. The data for $^2$H are in very good agreement with theoretical calculations, while the predictions for $^{12}$C exhibit differences with respect to the data.

Abstract

Despite decades of studies which have seen the nuclear charge distribution being measured with increasing precision, the neutron distribution remains elusive. The difference between the neutron and proton distributions is often expressed as the difference of their root mean square radii: the neutron skin thickness. Recently, the A2 collaboration at MaMi has measured the skin thickness in lead through coherent pion photoproduction [1] with a very high precision. However, they do not include theoretical uncertainties, which can be significant for this process. Abstract

The cumulant ratios up to fourth order of the Z distributions of the largest fragment in spectator fragmentation following 107,124Sn+Sn and 124La+Sn collisions at 600 MeV/nucleon have been investigated. They are found to exhibit the signatures of a second-order phase transition established with cubic bond percolation and previously observed in the ALADIN experimental data for fragmentation of 197Au projectiles at similar energies. The deduced pseudocritical points are found to be only weakly dependent on the A/Z ratio of the fragmenting spectator source. The same holds for the corresponding chemical freeze-out temperatures of close to 6 MeV.The experimental cumulant distributions are quantitatively reproduced with the Statistical Multifragmentation Model and parameters used to describe the experimental fragment multiplicities, isotope distributions and their correlations with impact-parameter related observables in these reactions. The characteristic coincidence of the zero transition of the skewness with the minimum of the kurtosis excess appears to be a generic property of statistical models and is found to coincide with the maximum of the heat capacity in the canonical thermodynamic fragmentation model.

Abstract

One-nucleon halo nuclei are exotic nuclei which can be seen as a core around which orbits a loosely-bound valence nucleon. They are usually studied through reactions such as elastic scattering and breakup. The ratio method has been developed as a tool to study one-neutron halo nuclei at high energies. It consists of the ratio of angular cross sections, breakup and elastic scattering, which removes most of the sensitivity to the reaction mechanism and to the reaction model. In the simple recoil excitation and breakup (REB) model, the ratio simplifies to a form factor dependent solely on the wave function of the projectile. By measuring this observable and comparing it to the REB form factor, i.e. in the ratio method, more detailed information on the structure of the halo could be obtained. For neutron-halo nuclei at high energy, the ratio observable obtained from accurate CDCC and DEA theoretical calculations follows its REB prediction. I study the extension of this method to lower energies of the reaction which could make the measurement appropriate to facilities such as SPIRAL2 (GANIL, Caen, France) and ReA12 at FRIB (Michigan State University) and to proton halos. This is done by comparing the REB form factor to dynamical calculations of the ratio. The reactions investigated are the reaction of 11Be, the archetypical one-neutron halo nucleus, on 12C, 40Ca and 208Pb targets at 20 MeV/nucleon and of 8B, the archetypical one-proton halo nucleus, on 12C, 58Ni and 208Pb targets at44 MeV/nucleon.For these reactions, the adiabatic assumption is no longer valid due to the effect of the Coulomb interaction. This effect is mainly visible at forward angle for 11Be and is aggravated for 8B by the fact that the halo is charged. The ratio works less well than for neutron-halos at intermediate and high energies. Abstract

This thesis presents the work focused on detector development and data analysis related to the HADES detector. Two detection tracking stations, playing an important role of online beam monitoring and the momentum reconstruction device in the secondary pion beam experiment and employing double sided silicons strip sensors with an active area of 10 cm × 10 cm and position resolution of 780 μm, providing momentum resolution below 0.5% and capable for operating with beams up to 32M particles/s total and 2M particles/s in a single channel have been constructed, tested and used in the pion beam experiments. The second part of the thesis focuses on the analysis of inclusive production of the Λ hyperons in the nuclear reactions at the HADES energies. A total Λ-hyperon production cross-section of σ(pp → Λ + X) = 201.3 +- 1.3 +6.0/−7.3 +-8.1 +0.4/−0.4 μb with the angular anisotropy expressed in terms of Legendre polynomials have been extracted from the data. Results have been verified by comparing obtained distributions with the Λ production model based on the exclusive measurements of various channels., Die vorliegende Arbeit befasst sich mit zwei Fragestellungen, die im Rahmen des Messprogramms der HADES Kollaboration behandelt werden. Zwei Detektorstationen zur berwachung und Spurverfolgung von sekundren Pionen-Strahlen bestehend aus jeweils einem doppelseitigen Siliziumstreifenzhler mit einer aktiven Flche von 10 cm × 10 cm und einer Ortsauflsung von 780 μm wurden im Pionenstrahlexperiment gebaut, getestet und eingesetzt. So wurde eine Impulsauflsung von unter 5% bei einer Strahlintensitt von 32M Teilchen pro Sekunde auf dem gesamten Detektor und 2M Teilchen pro Sekunde pro Einzelkanal erreicht. Der zweite Teil der Arbeit enthlt die Ergebnisse zur inklusiven Produktion von Lambda-Hyperonen, die fr die Reaktion bei einer kinetischen Energie Ep = 3.5 GeV mit dem HADES Spektrometer gemessen wurden. So kann schlielich ein totaler Lambda-Hyperon Produktions-Wirkungsquerschnitt von σ(→ +X) = 201.3 +- 1.3 +6.0/−7.3 +-8.1 +0.4/−0.4 μb aus den Daten extrahiert werden, bei dem die Winkel-Anisotropie durch Legendre Polynome angegeben wird. Die Ergebnisse wurden durch einen Vergleich der aus den Daten gewonnenen Verteilungen mit den aus dem Lambdaproduktions-Modell simulierten Ereignissen verifiziert. Dieses Modell basiert auf der exklusiven Messung von verschiedenen Lambda-Ausgangskanälen.

Abstract

A detailed knowledge of the light ions interaction processes with matter is of great interest in basic and applied physics. As an example, particle therapy and space radioprotection require highly accurate fragmentation cross-section measurements to develop shielding materials and estimate acute and late health risks for manned missions in space and for treatment planning in particle therapy. The Fragmentation of Ions Relevant for Space and Therapy experiment at the Helmholtz Center for Heavy Ion research (GSI) was designed and built by an international collaboration from France, Germany, Italy, and Spain for studying the collisions of a C-12 ion beam with thin targets. The collaboration's main purpose is to provide the double-differential cross-section measurement of carbon-ion fragmentation at energies that are relevant for both tumor therapy and space radiation protection applications. Fragmentation cross sections of light ions impinging on a wide range of thin targets are also essential to validate the nuclear models implemented in MC simulations that, in such an energy range, fail to reproduce the data with the required accuracy. This paper presents the single differential carbon-ion fragmentation cross sections on a thin gold target, measured as a function of the fragment angle and kinetic energy in the forward angular region (theta less than or similar to 6 degrees), aiming to provide useful data for the benchmarking of the simulation softwares used in light ions fragmentation applications. The C-12 ions used in the measurement were accelerated at the energy of 400 MeV/nucleon by the SIS (heavy ion synchrotron) GSI facility.

Abstract

Hadrontherapy treatments use charged particles (e.g. protons and carbon ions) to treat tumors. During a therapeutic treatment with carbon ions, the beam undergoes nuclear fragmentation processes giving rise to significant yields of secondary charged particles. An accurate prediction of these production rates is necessary to estimate precisely the dose deposited into the tumours and the surrounding healthy tissues. Nowadays, a limited set of double differential carbon fragmentation cross-section is available. Experimental data are necessary to benchmark Monte Carlo simulations for their use in hadrontherapy. The purpose of the FIRST experiment is to study nuclear fragmentation processes of ions with kinetic energy in the range from 100 to 1000 MeV/u. Tracks are reconstructed using information from a pixel silicon detector based on the CMOS technology. The performances achieved using this device for hadrontherapy purpose are discussed. For each reconstruction step (clustering, tracking and vertexing), different methods are implemented. The algorithm performances and the accuracy on reconstructed observables are evaluated on the basis of simulated and experimental data.

Abstract

One-nucleon halo nuclei are exotic nuclei which can be seen as a core around which orbits a loosely-bound valence nucleon. They are usually studied through reactions such as elastic scattering and breakup. The ratio method has been developed as a tool to study one-neutron halo nuclei at high energies. It consists of the ratio of angular cross sections, breakup and elastic scattering, which removes most of the sensitivity to the reaction mechanism and to the reaction model. In the simple recoil excitation and breakup (REB) model, the ratio simplifies to a form factor dependent solely on the wave function of the projectile. By measuring this observable and comparing it to the REB form factor, i.e. in the ratio method, more detailed information on the structure of the halo could be obtained. For neutron-halo nuclei at high energy, the ratio observable obtained from accurate CDCC and DEA theoretical calculations follows its REB prediction. I study the extension of this method to lower energies of the reaction which could make the measurement appropriate to facilities such as SPIRAL2 (GANIL, Caen, France) and ReA12 at FRIB (Michigan State University) and to proton halos. This is done by comparing the REB form factor to dynamical calculations of the ratio. The reactions investigated are the reaction of 11Be, the archetypical one-neutron halo nucleus, on 12C, 40Ca and 208Pb targets at 20 MeV/nucleon and of 8B, the archetypical one-proton halo nucleus, on 12C, 58Ni and 208Pb targets at44 MeV/nucleon.For these reactions, the adiabatic assumption is no longer valid due to the effect of the Coulomb interaction. This effect is mainly visible at forward angle for 11Be and is aggravated for 8B by the fact that the halo is charged. The ratio works less well than for neutron-halos at intermediate and high energies. Nevertheless, the ratio is shown to be very sensitive to the orbital angular momentum l0 in which the halo is bound and its binding energy E0, i.e. the single-particle structure of the projectile. Variations of l0 and E0 induce visible changes in shape and in magnitude (up to several orders) of the ratio. Also, the agreement of the ratio with its REB prediction is best when the projectile is loosely-bound and for low l0, i.e. for s and p waves. The validity of the method is not affected by the use of energy ranges—or bins— in the projectile continuum. These tend to increase the cross section without changing the agreement of the ratio with its REB prediction. The applicability of the method is finally explored at high energy for proton-rich nuclei 17F, 25Al and 27P. I show that the ratio method works the latter since this nucleus is bound by a mere 0.870 MeV in the s-wave. For the other nuclei, although the agreement of the ratio with its REB prediction is less good than for neutron-halo nuclei at high energy, it still provides estimates of nuclear-structure features, such as l0 and E0 and could be applied in what can be called an approximate application of the ratio method. Heavy nuclei exhibit a neutron skin, i.e. a thin layer around the nucleus where only neutrons are found. The thickness of the skin is highly correlated with the slope of the symmetry energy. The process of coherent neutral-pion photoproduction is used to extract the nuclear density and hence the neutron-skin thickness of heavy nuclei. In order to analyse recent data on the photoproduction on 12C, 40,48Ca, 116, 120, 124Sn and 208Pb, I build a reaction code. My model uses the formalism of Kerman, McManus and Thaler (KMT) which allows to build the photoproduction matrix on a nucleus from the ones describing the elementary process on a single nucleon. Within the impulse approximation, the photoproduction is seen as the coherent sum of the photoproduction on each of the nucleons. In the plane wave impulse approximation (PWIA), no rescattering of the pion is considered after its production and the cross section is directly proportional to the Fourier transform of the density. Such process is taken into account at the distorted wave impulse approximation (DWIA) by considering a potential simulating the pion-nucleus interaction and built from the KMT formalism.The agreement of my model with the data is good, especially for 208Pb. The distortion has a significant impact on the photoproduction process. The sensitivity of the process to the density of the target is analysed by performing the calculations with several different densities calculated in different structure models. The distortion has the effect of deteriorating this sensitivity. In the particular case of a 208Pb target, the impact of variations of the neutron-skin thickness of around 0.1 fm on the photoproduction cross section is ten times smaller than the size of the error bars on the experimental data. These results, although less dramatic, hold for the tin targets, for which preliminary data exists. In the light of these results, the coherent neutral-pion photoproduction process does not seem to be suited in the study of the neutron-skin thickness.
