1. Design and early operation of a new-generation internal beam dump for CERN's Super Proton Synchrotron

Abstract: The Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) is the last stage in the injector chain for CERN's Large Hadron Collider, and it also provides proton and ion beams for several fixed-target experiments. The SPS has been in operation since 1976, and it has been upgraded over the years. For the SPS to operate safely, its internal beam dump must be able to repeatedly absorb the energy of the circulating beams without sustaining damage that would affect its function. The latest upgrades of the SPS led to the requirement for its beam dump to absorb proton beams with a momentum spectrum from 14 to 450~GeV/$c$ and an average beam power up to $\sim$270~kW. This paper presents the technical details of a new design of SPS beam dump that was installed in one of the long straight sections of the SPS during the 2019--2020 shutdown of CERN's accelerator complex. This new beam dump has been in operation since May 2021, and it is foreseen that it will operate with a lifetime of 20~years. The key challenges in the design of the beam dump were linked to the high levels of thermal energy to be dissipated -- to avoid overheating and damage to the beam dump itself -- and high induced levels of radiation, which have implications for personnel access to monitor the beam dump and repair any problems occurring during operation. The design process therefore included extensive thermomechanical finite-element simulations of the beam-dump core and its cooling system's response to normal operation and worst-case scenarios for beam dumping. To ensure high thermal conductivity between the beam-dump core and its water-cooling system, hot isostatic pressing techniques were used in its manufacturing process. Abstract: By the end of October 2022, the US HL-LHC Accelerator Upgrade Project (AUP) had completed fabrication of ten MQXFA magnets and tested eight of them. The MQXFA magnets are the low beta quadrupole magnets to be used in the Q1 and Q3 Inner Triplet elements of the High Luminosity LHC. This AUP effort is shared by BNL, Fermilab, and LBNL, with strand verification tests at NHMFL. An important step of the AUP QA plan is the testing of MQXFA magnets in a vertical cryostat at BNL. The acceptance criteria that could be tested at BNL were all met by the first four production magnets (MQXFA03-MQXFA06). Subsequently, two magnets (MQXFA07 and MQXFA08) did not meet some criteria and were disassembled. Lessons learned during the disassembly of MQXFA07 caused a revision to the assembly specifications that were used for MQXFA10 and subsequent magnets. In this paper, we present a summary of: 1) the fabrication and test data of all the MQXFA magnets; 2) the analysis of MQXFA07/A08 test results with characterization of the limiting mechanism; 3) the outcome of the investigation, including the lessons learned during MQXFA07 disassembly; and 4) the finite element analysis correlating observations with test performance.

Abstract: Dark photons are hypothetical massive vector particles that could mix with ordinary photons. The simplest theoretical model is fully characterised by only two parameters: the mass of the dark photon m$_{\gamma^{\mathrm{D}}}$ and its mixing parameter with the photon, $\varepsilon$. The sensitivity of the SHiP detector is reviewed for dark photons in the mass range between 0.002 and 10 GeV. Different production mechanisms are simulated, with the dark photons decaying to pairs of visible fermions, including both leptons and quarks. Exclusion contours are presented and compared with those of past experiments. The SHiP detector is expected to have a unique sensitivity for m$_{\gamma^{\mathrm{D}}}$ ranging between 0.8 and 3.3$^{+0.2}_{-0.5}$ GeV, and $\varepsilon^2$ ranging between $10^{-11}$ and $10^{-17}$.

Abstract: We propose to build and operate a detector that, for the first time, will measure the process $pp\to\nu X$ at the LHC and search for feebly interacting particles (FIPs) in an unexplored domain. The TI18 tunnel has been identified as a suitable site to perform these measurements due to very low machine-induced background. The detector will be off-axis with respect to the ATLAS interaction point (IP1) and, given the pseudo-rapidity range accessible, the corresponding neutrinos will mostly come from charm decays: the proposed experiment will thus make the first test of the heavy flavour production in a pseudo-rapidity range that is not accessible by the current LHC detectors. In order to efficiently reconstruct neutrino interactions and identify their flavour, the detector will combine in the target region nuclear emulsion technology with scintillating fibre tracking layers and it will adopt a muon identification system based on scintillating bars that will also play the role of a hadronic calorimeter. The time of flight measurement will be achieved thanks to a dedicated timing detector. Abstract: The Beam Dump Facility (BDF) project is a proposed general-purpose facility at CERN, dedicated to beam dump and fixed target experiments. In its initial phase, the facility is foreseen to be exploited by the Search for Hidden Particles (SHiP) experiment. Physics requirements call for a pulsed 400 GeV/c proton beam as well as the highest possible number of protons on target (POT) each year of operation, in order to search for feebly interacting particles. The target/dump assembly lies at the heart of the facility, with the aim of safely absorbing the full high intensity Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) beam, while maximizing the production of charmed and beauty mesons. High-Z materials are required for the target/dump, in order to have the shortest possible absorber and reduce muon background for the downstream experiment. The high average power deposited on target (305 kW) creates a challenge for heat removal. During the BDF facility Comprehensive Design Study (CDS), launched by CERN in 2016, extensive studies have been carried out in order to define and assess the target assembly design. These studies are described in the present contribution, which details the proposed design of the BDF production target, as well as the material selection process and the optimization of the target configuration and beam dilution. One of the specific challenges and novelty of this work is the need to consider new target materials, such as a molybdenum alloy (TZM) as core absorbing material and Ta2.5W as cladding. Thermo-structural and fluid dynamics calculations have been performed to evaluate the reliability of the target and its cooling system under beam operation. In the framework of the target comprehensive design, a preliminary mechanical design of the full target assembly has also been carried out, assessing the feasibility of the whole target system., Comment: 17 pages, 18 figures

Abstract: The continuity of the 18, 13, and 2 kA circuits of the HL-LHC magnets heavily relies on splices and electrical connections, to which it is worth devoting a special attention from the early phases. This spans the design of the splice or connection itself, together with the tooling and related procedure, so that the execution can reliably yield high quality results. Mindful of the history of LHC splices, robustness and reproducibility of the execution solutions are two of the fundamental parameters that have guided the technical choices made during the development phase. The number of technical solutions considered is due to the variety of possible combinations, depending on the various nature and geometry of the superconducting cables to be joined together. This wide spectrum calls for a rigorous qualification protocol, including micrography, mechanical tests before and after fatigue stress and electrical tests at room and cryogenic temperature. The article will illustrate the choices made during the development phase for the 11 selected families of splices and electrical connections, together with their qualification process, while providing results and statistics from the mechanical and electrical tests campaigns.

Abstract: A new general purpose fixed target facility is proposed at the CERN SPS accelerator which is aimed at exploring the domain of hidden particles and make measurements with tau neutrinos. Hidden particles are predicted by a large number of models beyond the Standard Model. The high intensity of the SPS 400~GeV beam allows probing a wide variety of models containing light long-lived exotic particles with masses below ${\cal O}$(10)~GeV/c$^2$, including very weakly interacting low-energy SUSY states. Abstract: During operation, the radio-frequency quadrupole (RFQ) of the LINAC4 at CERN is exposed to high electric fields, which can lead to vacuum breakdown. It is also subject to beam loss, which can cause surface modification, including blistering, which can result in reduced electric field holding and an increased breakdown rate. First, experiments to study the high-voltage conditioning process and electrical breakdown statistics have been conducted using pulsed highvoltage DC systems in order to identify materials with high electric field handling capability and robustness to low-energy irradiation. In this paper, we discuss the results obtained for the different materials tested. To complement these, an investigation of their metallurgical properties using advanced microscopic techniques was done to observe and characterize the different materials and to compare results before and after irradiation and breakdown testing. Abstract: Magnetic materials, both hard and soft, are used extensively in several components of particle accelerators. Magnetically soft iron-nickel alloys are used as shields for the vacuum chambers of accelerator injection and extraction septa; Fe-based material is widely employed for cores of accelerator and experiment magnets; soft spinel ferrites are used in collimators to damp trapped modes; innovative materials such as amorphous or nanocrystalline core materials are envisaged in transformers for high-frequency polyphase resonant convertors for application to the International Linear Collider (ILC). In the field of fusion, for induction cores of the linac of heavy-ion inertial fusion energy accelerators, based on induction accelerators requiring some 107 kg of magnetic materials, nanocrystalline materials would show the best performance in terms of core losses for magnetization rates as high as 105 T/s to 107 T/s. After a review of the magnetic properties of materials and the different types of magnetic behaviour, this paper deals with metallurgical aspects of magnetism. The influence of the metallurgy and metalworking processes of materials on their microstructure and magnetic properties is studied for different categories of soft magnetic materials relevant for accelerator technology. Their metallurgy is extensively treated. Innovative materials such as iron powder core materials, amorphous and nanocrystalline materials are also studied. A section considers the measurement, both destructive and non-destructive, of magnetic properties. Abstract: Several studies, conducted over the last 20 years, have shown that ground motion in Italy is characterized by a strong regional variability and, in particular, tectonic and geological factors play key roles in the definition of the observed differences. In the early 2000s, several researches (Castro et al. 1999, Malagnini et al., 2000; 2002) were focused on conducting systematic studies of the regionalization in Italy using local dataset of small magnitude recordings of the seismic sequences that occurred in Italy in the early instrumental epoch.Recently, the availability of a large number of records from moderate-to-strong earthquakes on the entire Italian territory allowed us to review previous results, with the final aim of producing a new generation of Ground Motion Models (GMM) models for the calibration of shaking scenarios. In this work, the analysis of the residuals (logarithm differences between observations and GMM predictions) was exploited to describe the regional differences in terms of source and path effects across the country (Brunelli et al. 2023), confirming the results of the previous studies conducted in Italy. Based on these results, we developed a regionalised model for Italy, using an approach similar to that of Kotha et al. (2020) for source effects, and a zoneless approach for propagation effects. 25. Estimation of the seismic amplification factors from the GMMs between-station residuals

Abstract: Estimation of amplification factors (AFs) at the local or regional scale is an important task in land planning and seismic design, especially in areas with high seismic hazards and complex geological and geomorphological structures of the territory, such as Italy. When multiple seismic recordings at a single site are available, they can be exploited to estimate AFs empirically through many methods, such as: a) spectral ratios between i) the horizontal and vertical ground-motion components and ii) the shaking observed at the site and at a reference rock site, both for acceleration response and Fourier spectra; b) parametric or non-parametric generalized spectral inversion techniques; and c) decomposition of residuals of a nonergodic Ground Motion Model (Rodriguez-Marek et al., 2011; Priolo et al., 2020, among the others) to estimate repeatable within-site terms (δS2S). In this study, we exploited the estimates of δS2S provided by Lanzano et al (2022), through the ITACA (ITalian ACcelerometric Archive) web portal (https://itaca.mi.ingv.it/ItacaNet_32/#/products/itacas2s_flatfile), to compute the AFs for about 800 recording sites in Italy. We then compare AFs estimates with different proxies for predicting the site effects, such as Vs profile, resonance frequency, cover geology and topographic slope. Moreover, we also employed the empirical AFs to validate the estimates provided by 1D, 2D and 3D numerical modeling of the site response. Abstract: Intensity Prediction Equations (IPEs) allow predicting the possible macroseismic intensity values at any site, as a function of epicentral distance and epicentral intensity or magnitude. In Italy, different approaches have been proposed in the last years for developing intensity attenuation models. We evaluated the performance of the five most recent IPEs valid for the Italian area comparing their predictions with intensities documented at Italian localities.We built two different testing datasets using the data contained in the most recent versions of the Italian Parametric Earthquake Catalogue CPTI15 and of the Macroseismic Italian Database DBMI15. Dataset 1 contains 213 earthquakes with instrumental location and magnitude from 1907 to 2020, whereas Dataset 2 includes 357 events that occurred from 1117 to 1978 with the epicentral parameters estimated from macroseismic intensity data. We computed the residuals between documented intensity values and predicted intensities using the IPEs. Analyzing these results as a function of the epicentre-to-site distance, of the values of documented intensities and of the magnitude of each considered earthquake, we observed a systematic underprediction for high intensity values in both datasets for all the considered IPEs.We also investigated the between-event residuals to highlight spatial and temporal patterns. The results did not show any particular spatial trends, but a significant temporal dependence of the results for Dataset 2, with an underestimation of the documented values for all the considered IPEs for earthquakes in the period 1000-1700., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

Abstract: In July 2018 an optimization run for the proposed charm cross section measurement for SHiP was performed at the CERN SPS. A heavy, moving target instrumented with nuclear emulsion films followed by a silicon pixel tracker was installed in front of the Goliath magnet at the H4 proton beamline. Behind the magnet, scintillating-fibre, drift-tube and RPC detectors were placed. The purpose of this run was to validate the measurement's feasibility, to develop the required analysis tools and fine-tune the detector layout. In this paper, we present the track reconstruction in the pixel tracker and the track matching with the moving emulsion detector. Abstract: In this study, we investigate the correlation between the residuals of a neGMM (non-ergodic Ground Motion Model) and the physics-based parameters obtained using a non-parametric GIT approach (Generalized Inversion Technique) to lay the groundwork for the implementation of an ad-hoc FAS (Fourier Amplitude Spectra) neGMM for the Central Italy region. This region is particularly suitable for data-driven methodologies as those applied in this work because of the large amount of available data due to the recent multiple main shock–aftershock sequences occurred in this area. Both neGMM and GIT models are developed for Fourier spectra in the frequency range between 0.5 and 25 Hz and using the same reference sites. The comparison of the non-ergodic terms with the source, path and site spectral parameters provides interesting results. First, we find a strong correlation between the source parameters, stress drop Δσ and decay |${k}_{\mathrm{ source}}$| and the source neGMM corrective terms (the combination of the between-event δBe and the location-to-location terms δL2L). This correlation is frequency dependent and, at high frequency, is remarkably positive for Δσ and negative for |${k}_{\mathrm{ source}}$|⁠. Concerning the attenuation terms, the path-to-path residuals (δP2P) are clearly associated with the deviations from the regional Q estimates obtained from GIT analysis. This indicates that the neGMM properly captures the properties of the anelastic attenuation and that the corrective terms δP2P can be used to account for differences in travel paths across different crustal domains. Finally, adopting the same reference sites for neGMM and non-parametric GIT, we observe that the systematic site terms (δS2Ss) and the GIT-derived amplification functions are in good agreement. The next step for an appropriate modelling is to identify the physical parameters (e.g. VS,30 and |${k}_0$|⁠) describing the empirical amplification curves to be introduced as explanatory variables in the ground motion model. Abstract: We propose to build and operate a detector that, for the first time, will measure the process $pp\to\nu X$ at the LHC and search for feebly interacting particles (FIPs) in an unexplored domain. The TI18 tunnel has been identified as a suitable site to perform these measurements due to very low machine-induced background. The detector will be off-axis with respect to the ATLAS interaction point (IP1) and, given the pseudo-rapidity range accessible, the corresponding neutrinos will mostly come from charm decays: the proposed experiment will thus make the first test of the heavy flavour production in a pseudo-rapidity range that is not accessible by the current LHC detectors. In order to efficiently reconstruct neutrino interactions and identify their flavour, the detector will combine in the target region nuclear emulsion technology with scintillating fibre tracking layers and it will adopt a muon identification system based on scintillating bars that will also play the role of a hadronic calorimeter. The time of flight measurement will be achieved thanks to a dedicated timing detector. The detector will be a small-scale prototype of the scattering and neutrino detector (SND) of the SHiP experiment: the operation of this detector will provide an important test of the neutrino reconstruction in a high occupancy environment.

Abstract: The SHiP experiment will search for very weakly interacting particles beyond the Standard Model which are produced in a 400 \GeV/$c$ proton beam dump at the CERN SPS. About $10^{11}$ muons per spill will be produced in the dump. To design the experiment such that the muon-induced background is minimized, a precise knowledge of the muon spectrum is required. To validate the muon flux generated by our Pythia and GEANT4 based Monte Carlo simulation (FairShip), we have measured the muon flux emanating from a SHiP-like target at the SPS. This target, consisting of 13 interaction lengths of slabs of molybdenum and tungsten, followed by a 2.4 m iron hadron absorber was placed in the H4 400~\GeV/$c$ proton beam line. To identify muons and to measure the momentum spectrum, a spectrometer instrumented with drift tubes and a muon tagger were used. During a three-week period a dataset for analysis corresponding to $(3.27\pm0.07)~\times~10^{11}$ protons on target was recorded. This amounts to approximatively 1\% of a SHiP spill.

The document concludes with an overall road map and updated costs for the detector R&D and construction. With the submission and review of this document, together with the SHiP Progress Report [1] and the Beam Dump Facility Yellow Report [2], the SHiP Collaboration is ready to proceed with the preparation of Technical Design Reports, pending approval.
