11. Simulation as a tool to identify dynamical typology of water frog hemiclonal population systems

Abstract

Some related species give rise to interspecies hybrids with hemiclonal inheritance. The gametes of such hybrids transfer the set of hereditary information of one of the parental species. The water frog, Pelophylax esculentus, is an example of such hybrids. The hemiclonal hybrids together with their parental species form a biosystem for which the suggested name is Hemiclonal Population System (HPS). The phenomenon of interspecific hemiclonal reproduction of water frogs has been intensively explored for several decades, but insufficient study has been devoted to the mechanisms of the composition constancy and ecological stability of their population systems. In this paper we focus on sustainability and possible results of transformations (in terms of different genetic forms and of population dynamics of each of these forms) of HPSs that consist of diploid representatives. By means of a simulation model we evaluated the long-term consequences of parameters that were derived from empirical research on a natural HPS at a particular brief time-period. This research was carried out in the region of eastern Ukraine, the so-called Siverskyi Donets center of diversity of the Pelophylax esculentus complex. Our study describes the development of a dynamic typology of the HPS by principal component analysis of data generated by the simulations. We investigate the space of the possible states of the HPS. The simulations helped to split this state-space into six areas of stability, each of which corresponds to a different type of stability. Before conducting the simulation study we assumed there were only four truly stable states. Two new states were identified as a result of using this model. 12. Contrasting genetic diversity and the level of clonality of parental genomes in a water frog population system with the prevalence of <italic>Pelophylax esculentus</italic> hybrids.

Abstract

Pelophylax esculentus (genotype LR), an interspecific hybrid of P. ridibundus (genotype RR) and P. lessonae (genotype LL), is one of the most studied examples of hemiclonal hybridogenic vertebrates. In most populations, hybrids produce clonal gametes of one parental species and backcross with the other parental species, forming a new generation of hybrids. In this study, we focused on the population system of water frogs in the Siverskyi Donets river basin (eastern Ukraine) with the aim to determine the genetic diversity of parental genomes and clarify how such a system is maintained in nature. Of the 55 frogs analyzed, only one individual was P. ridibundus, 48 belonged to diploid LR and five to triploid LRR hybrids. Using 16 microsatellite loci, we found significantly lower genetic diversity and significantly higher clonality in the L-genome of hybrids compared to the R-genome. This contrasting diversity might be attributed to the absence of P. lessonae in the studied region and the clonal inheritance of the L-genome. Our population-genetic results are partially inconsistent with previous studies focusing on hybrid gametogenesis in the Siverskyi Donets river basin, according to which hybrids form both clonal R and L gametes. We hypothesize that discrepancies between the type of clonally formed gametes and the genotypic composition of the studied population may be due to the selective mortality of some genotypes during larval development and metamorphosis. Selective mortality thus may play an important role in the dynamics of the hybridogenetic systems in eastern Ukraine. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
