1. Africa-UK Research Partnerships for Development--A Vision for Future Success

Abstract

Significant investments have been made in the last five years to further strengthen the relationship between the United Kingdom (UK) and African continent for science and innovation partnerships. This has enabled the enhancement of longstanding relationships for joint research and development activities as well as the establishment of new, innovative partnerships between key actors driving change in the Africa-UK research and innovation landscape. A high-level meeting of research sector leaders from across Africa and the UK in March 2021. The aim was to reflect on the challenges and successes of past activities and to set out a vision for future success that will see continued and improved impact of Africa-UK research and innovation partnerships, across three priority areas: (1) Enhancing research partnerships to tackle global inequalities; (2) Embedding international collaboration in the next generation of researchers; and (3) Strengthening research systems for more and better research. The following recommendations have been set out for higher education institutions, funders and policymakers with the aim of enabling sustained, equitable and reciprocal research and innovation partnerships between Africa and the UK. 8. The Role of Iron and Silica in the Structure of the Radular Teeth of Certain Marine Molluscs

Abstract

Although the morphology of the radulae of molluscs have been extensively studied, but little is known of their composition ; it is generally stated to be of a chitinous nature. There are two exceptions to this statement: Troschel (1856) and Sollas (1907). The former reported that calcium, phosphorus and iron were present in the enamel which covered the teeth and that the organ contained both organic and inorganic constituents. Sollas found that the radulae of the Docoglossa contained up to 27 per cent, of ash of which silica was the chief constituent: from microdeterminations of specific gravity she suggested that the silica was in the form of a hydrate or opal ; the marginal teeth were found to contain no silica. She recognised the presence of iron and stated that “the ash contained (in addition to silica) a noticeable quantity of calcium, iron, magnesium and phosphoric acid.” No other groups of molluscs were found to have siliceous teeth in their radulae, but to have chitinous teeth hardened by deposits of iron, calcium and phosphorus. The Chitonidae were somewhat exceptional, for the most important constituent of their teeth was ferric oxide.

9. An assessment of the reliability of fossil pilchard and anchovy scales as fish population indicators off Namibia

Abstract

Fossil fish scales hold potential for ellucidating past fish population fluctuations. A system of classification for scales from the pilchard, Sardinops ocellata, and the anchovy, Engraulis capensis, is presented. Both species show an unexpected range of scale types. The classifications reduce errors in distinguishing between the scales of the two species to ±2,5%. Scale loss from these fish is quantified under laboratory conditions. Pilchard lose 1,56 scales/fish/day due to death and 1,50 scales/fish/day due to deciduousness over their expected lifetimes. For anchovy the figures are 2,42 scales/fish/day (death) and 0,48 scales/fish/day (deciduousness). Application of these scale-loss studies to scales preserved in the anaerobic sediments off Walvis Bay, Namibia, shows that deciduousness is the dominant process contributing scales to the sediments. This basic information on pilchard and anchovy scale loss is used to interpret counts of scales in the laminated interval of a core taken from the diatomaceous muds off Walvis Bay. This pilot study shows that: i) the Namibian Fishery was dominated by pilchard in the past as it was prior to the collapse in the early 1970's and, because of this, is distinctly different from the anchovy/anchovetta-dominated east Pacific systems; and ii) major pre-fishery stock fluctuations do appear to be reflected in the sedimentary record. Further scale studies on larger sediment samples are recommended to ellucidate the Namibian fish stock fluctuations.

18. Hairy Cell Leukemia Masquerading as Pancytopenia in Pregnancy.

Abstract

Thrombocytopenia is one of the most common hematological abnormalities observed during pregnancy, and in rare cases, this may be the first indicator of an underlying hematological malignancy. Hairy cell leukemia (HCL) is an uncommon B-cell lymphoproliferative disorder of which thrombocytopenia is a recurrent presenting feature. A case of pancytopenia presenting in pregnancy is described in which the thrombocytopenia persisted postpartum coincidental with a vesicular, pustular rash characterised as Sweet's syndrome. Hematological, histological, immunophenotypic, and molecular investigations confirmed the presence of HCL. The patient was treated with cladribine resulting in resolution of Sweet's syndrome, hematological remission from HCL, and achievement of a normal platelet count. This case highlights the need to maintain a wide differential diagnosis for presentations of pancytopenia or thrombocytopenia in pregnancy and the requirement for follow-up investigation of unusual cases with a lack of response to steroids or immunoglobulin., Competing Interests: The authors declare that there are no conflicts of interest regarding the publication of this paper.
