The significant increase in the number of individuals with chronic ailments (including the elderly and disabled) has dictated an urgent need for an innovative model for healthcare systems. The evolved model will be more personalized and less reliant on traditional brick-and-mortar healthcare institutions such as hospitals, nursing homes, and long-term healthcare centers. The smart healthcare system is a topic of recently growing interest and has become increasingly required due to major developments in modern technologies, especially in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). This paper is aimed to discuss the current state-of-the-art smart healthcare systems highlighting major areas like wearable and smartphone devices for health monitoring, machine learning for disease diagnosis, and the assistive frameworks, including social robots developed for the ambient assisted living environment. Additionally, the paper demonstrates software integration architectures that are very significant to create smart healthcare systems, integrating seamlessly the benefit of data analytics and other tools of AI. The explained developed systems focus on several facets: the contribution of each developed framework, the detailed working procedure, the performance as outcomes, and the comparative merits and limitations. The current research challenges with potential future directions are addressed to highlight the drawbacks of existing systems and the possible methods to introduce novel frameworks, respectively. This review aims at providing comprehensive insights into the recent developments of smart healthcare systems to equip experts to contribute to the field.

Background: Systembolaget is one of the distinctive features of Sweden. It is the only store allowed to sell alcohol above 3.5% of alcohol by volume. The aim of this government-owned company is to educate Swedish customers to engage into responsible drinking patterns. To do so, they make use of advertising strategies depicted on several channels with the purpose of increasing individuals’ knowledge and thus, enhance public health. Besides, Scandinavian cultures are associated with high-risk behaviours regarding the average amount of alcohol drunk. Several studies underlined that students regularly engage into binge drinking and other irresponsible behaviours. Purpose: The aim of this study is to emphasize the effect of Systembolaget’s communication strategy on the attitudes, intentions, and behaviour of Swedish students. To fill the research gap and fulfil the objectives, a combination of the Health-Belief Model and the Theory of Reasoned Action is an adequate mean. Method: To gather the material needed for the research and uncover new insights, we chose an exploratory design. The semi-inductive approach allows to investigate the theoretical concepts while being able to use induction and thus, use the theory to both collect and analyse the data. We conducted semi-structured personal interviews on a sample of 20 Swedish students since they are familiar with Systembolaget and considered as a high-risk population in the drinking habits. To distil the data, we selected content analysis allowing the categorisation of the information in the different theoretical concepts. Conclusion: Systembolaget’s communication has a notable effect on Swedish students. It has been uncovered that the messages create favourable attitudes and thus, intentions to reduce alcohol consumption. Nevertheless, individual experiences, beliefs, and other factors of influence imply that there is an important intention-behaviour gap. Systembolaget displays information and appeals to influence the beliefs and knowledge of individual to educate them and not directly triggers specific behaviours.

Filterless optical networks based on broadcast-and-select nodes have been proven to be a cost-effective alternative to active photonic network solutions in core networks. However, due to the emergence of novel metro-based high-bandwidth cloud-based services (e.g., Virtual Reality, 4K Video-on-Demand, etc.), filterless solutions have started to attract research attention also in the metro area. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of fully-filterless and semi-filterless (i.e., hybrid solutions between fully-filterless and active photonic architectures) optical-network architectures in terms of cost of network elements and spectrum utilization, in a metro-network scenario. Our evaluations show that, due to the ring-based hierarchical nature of metro networks, fully-filterless architectures tend to require excessive spectrum utilization as the broadcast effect spreads among all hierarchical rings. On the contrary, semi-filterless network architectures seem more promising due to the presence of filters that fend off the propagation of unfiltered channels. The results also show that it is more advantageous to deploy filters at nodes of the lower network levels than at nodes of higher network levels.

Most of the common techniques in text mining are based on the statistical analysis of a term, either word or phrase. Statistical analysis of a term frequency captures the importance of the term within a document only. However, two terms can have the same frequency in their documents, but one term contributes more to the meaning of its sentences than the other term. Thus, the underlying text mining model should indicate terms that capture the semantics of text. In this case, the mining model can capture terms that present the concepts of the sentence, which leads to discovery of the topic of the document. A new concept-based mining model that analyzes terms on the sentence, document, and corpus levels is introduced. The concept-based mining model can effectively discriminate between nonimportant terms with respect to sentence semantics and terms which hold the concepts that represent the sentence meaning. The proposed mining model consists of sentence-based concept analysis, document-based concept analysis, corpus-based concept-analysis, and concept-based similarity measure. The term which contributes to the sentence semantics is analyzed on the sentence, document, and corpus levels rather than the traditional analysis of the document only. The proposed model can efficiently find significant matching concepts between documents, according to the semantics of their sentences. The similarity between documents is calculated based on a new concept-based similarity measure. The proposed similarity measure takes full advantage of using the concept analysis measures on the sentence, document, and corpus levels in calculating the similarity between documents. Large sets of experiments using the proposed concept-based mining model on different data sets in text clustering are conducted. The experiments demonstrate extensive comparison between the concept-based analysis and the traditional analysis. Experimental results demonstrate the substantial enhancement of the clustering quality using the sentence-based, document-based, corpus-based, and combined approach concept analysis.

The term which contributes to the sentence semantics is assigned two different weights by the concept-based statistical analyzer and the conceptual ontological graph representation. These two weights are combined into a new weight. The concepts that have maximum combined weights are selected by the concept extractor. The concept-based model is used to enhance the quality of the text clustering, categorization and retrieval significantly.

Thus, to achieve a more accurate analysis, the underlying representation should indicate terms that capture the semantics of text. In this case, the representation can capture terms that present the concepts of the sentence, which leads to discover the topic of the document. A new concept-based representation, called Conceptual Ontological Graph (COG), where a concept can be either a word or a phrase and totally dependent on the sentence semantics, is introduced. The aim of the proposed representation is to extract the most important terms in a sentence and a document with respect to the meaning of the text. The COG representation analyzes each term at both the sentence and the document levels. This is different from the classical approach of analyzing terms at the document level. First, the proposed representation denotes the terms which contribute to the sentence semantics. Then, each term is chosen based on its position within the COG representation. Lastly, the selected terms are associated to their documents as features for the purpose of indexing before text retrieval. The COG representation can effectively discriminate between non-important terms with respect to sentence semantics and terms which hold the key concepts that represent the sentence meaning. Large sets of experiments using the proposed COG representation on different datasets in text retrieval are conducted. Experimental results demonstrate the substantial enhancement of the text retrieval quality using the COG representation over the traditional techniques. The evaluation of results relies on two quality measures, the bpref and P(10). Both the quality measures improved when the newly developed COG representation is used to enhance the quality of the text retrieval results.

The term which contributes to the sentence semantics is analyzed with respect to its importance at the sentence and document levels. The model can efficiently find significant matching terms, either words or phrases, of the documents according to the semantics of the text. The similarity between documents relies on a new concept-based similarity measure which is applied to the matching terms between documents. Experiments using the proposed concept-based term analysis and similarity measure in text clustering are conducted. Experimental results demonstrate that the newly developed concept-based mining model enhances the clustering quality of sets of documents substantially.

A new concept-based representation that relies on the analysis of the sentence semantics, rather than, the traditional analysis of the document dataset only is introduced. The proposed conceptual ontological graph representation denotes the terms which contribute to the sentence semantics. Then, each term is chosen based on its position in the proposed representation. Lastly, the selected terms are associated to their documents as features for the purpose of indexing in the text retrieval. Experiments using the proposed conceptual ontological graph representation in text retrieval are conducted. The evaluation of results is relied on two quality measures, the precision and the recall. Both of these quality measures improved when the newly developed representation is used to enhance the performance of the text retrieval.
