This paper summarizes the results of an intercomparison project with Earth System Models of Intermediate Complexity (EMICs) undertaken in support of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fifth Assessment Report (AR5). The focus is on long-term climate projections designed to 1) quantify the climate change commitment of different radiative forcing trajectories and 2) explore the extent to which climate change is reversible on human time scales. All commitment simulations follow the four representative concentration pathways (RCPs) and their extensions to year 2300. MostEMICs simulate substantial surface air temperature and thermosteric sea level rise commitment following stabilization of the atmospheric composition at year-2300 levels. The meridional overturning circulation (MOC) is weakened temporarily and recovers to near-preindustrial values in most models for RCPs 2.6-6.0. The MOC weakening is more persistent for RCP8.5. Elimination of anthropogenic CO2 emissions after 2300 results in slowly decreasing atmospheric CO2 concentrations. At year 3000 atmospheric CO2 is still at more than half its year-2300 level in all EMICs forRCPs 4.5-8.5. Surface air temperature remains constant or decreases slightly and thermosteric sea level rise continues for centuries after elimination ofCO2 emissions in allEMICs.Restoration of atmosphericCO2 fromRCPto preindustrial levels over 100-1000 years requires large artificial removal of CO2 from the atmosphere and does not result in the simultaneous return to preindustrial climate conditions, as surface air temperature and sea level response exhibit a substantial time lag relative to atmospheric CO2. © 2013 American Meteorological Society.

Levee failures during Hurricane Katrina left 85% of New Orleans flooded, 1,500 dead, and about 400,000 homeless. Three separate investigations into the levee failures have been concluded, yet none of these studies conclusively determined why the St Bernard polder flooded so deeply, despite Team Louisiana’s conclusion regarding early failure of the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet (MRGO) levees. Detailed wave and hydrodynamic modeling reported here reveals the cause of extensive breaching of the MRGO levees and how that created a very efficient conduit of surge water into the heart of the city.

As we celebrate the centennial of school social work, the field faces many of the same professional and social situations first encountered at the turn of the past century. Immigrant populations are growing rapidly, social worker-student ratios continue to be high, and schools remain bureaucratic, inflexible, and slow to change. The "Roaring Twenties" marked the greatest expansion in early school social work, and a time in which many of the core functions were first identified. These functions persist today as school social work retains its role linking home, school, and community. However, the social action and leadership emphasis of early school social work pioneers has been replaced primarily by casework with maladjusted students and a peripheral role in the decision-making process in schools. This article identifies successful practice, training, and education of early school social work practitioners and reflects on how current practice has advanced or digressed with the passage of time.

Surveys 208 inservice elementary school teachers regarding their collective perceptions of integrated phonics instruction at several levels. Investigates the importance of phonics instruction, the integration of phonics instruction in current elementary classrooms, the preparation of the elementary teachers, and the teachers' perceptions towards phonics. Examines how teachers allocate instructional time in reading classes. Indicates that teachers used 34% of time in reading and responding; 24.89% in listening and discussing; 8.36% waiting; 20.28% completing skill development; 7.52% in telling, writing, and narrating; 3.47% in other activities. Notes that the recommendation that time spent reading should exceed time allocated to all other reading-class activities was not observed. (CR)

Labor relations developments are examined as they apply to the unionization of social work personnel. Current research is reviewed, labor contracts are examined, areas of needed research are outlined, and suggestions are made for introducing labor relations studies into social work curriculum.
